SQL Practice

Hello everyone. I have been using SQL for almost a year now and am currently studying for my 70-461 exam. I have the Microsoft training kit book, have read, highlighted, and done most of the exercises, however the best way for me to learn is just constant
practice in multiple scenarios. I was wondering if there is any additional "labs" or practice questions out there that I can use (based off of either the AdventureWorks2012 or the TSQL2012 practice databases) to help further fine-tune my skills in
SQL. I hope within another year or so to get a job specifically working with databases and eventually become a DBA so I want to know this information well.
Thanks in advance!

Dont know if this works for you.. but what I try these days is to look into the transact-sql forums specifically for all the types of good and wierd questions. I try to find solutions for them and most of the time before I could find a solution someone
would have already posted theirs. I then try to compare my code with theirs and try to find how better, easy and simple theirs is.
I am learning quite a lot about coding . I am a hardcore dba and my coding skills arent great. I am learning a lot from the forums.

  • Sql practice exams, tests, help!

    Hello,
Does anyone have practice questions for 1Z0-001 SQL test (OCP) ? If you have, can you send me it to the following e-mail: [email protected] !
    Any help would be great!
    thank you,
    Zeljko

    Hi,
Methink you'll be getting more than just exam questions on your email from now on.
Have you googled for '1Z0-001'? I get lots of hits for practice exams. Of course, you'll have to pay for them. But since you're doing an OCP you're prepared to pay anyway.
    Cheers,
    Colin

  • SQL practice database

    Hi FOlks,
I installed the companion CD to 10g. How do I change databases to practice using PL/SQL from my SQLplus application?
    Thanks
    BRuce

As Justin mentioned you will need to unlock the HR user/schema. Also, before you ask... yes, user and schema are synonymous. A user or schema, whatever you call them will have associated tables in them. And tables that are under (or are created by) that user belong to that user only.
When you signed in as SYSMAN and you looked up the tables, that query showed you the tables belonging to SYSMAN, not HR.
Login in to HR and you will see the tables(and other objects) belonging to HR.
    Good luck and fun adventure.

  • Where Could I Find SQL or PL/SQL Practical Tasks or Projects???

    Hi everyone,
In order to improve my SQL and PL/SQL skills by myself, I am looking for some SQL or PL/SQL tasks or projects online. Does anyone know any website or anything about it?
I really appreciate your help from now on.
    Thanks

Three steps for honing SQL skills first.. SQL is the foundation :)
Answer the questions asked in the forums -- begin with simple sql statements. (By this way atleast u will make an attempt to provide solution after u solve them)
Even if someone answers it already, try to provide alternate best solution (By this way u will try to think different)
If someone contradicts you, provide justification if your argument is valid (by this way u will check the documentation of oracle)
    Cheers,
    Manik.

  • Good SQL Practices Videos by Stephane Faroult

I saw these videos on the Oracle-L list
    http://www.freelists.org/archives/oracle-l/feed.rss
in my opinion they are very educative for the fundamentals, also funny examples and images are used, I loved them and sharing them with all my friends

Thanks to Stephane Faroult and I hope you like them too :)

  • How to test PL/SQL procedures and functions?

What are the proven ways to test pl/sql procedures and functions? Specifically, procedures and functions that take cursor variables as IN OUT parameter, OR procedure and functions that takes an array as IN parameter?
    Thx.

    HI,
One way could by using PL/SQL Develper tool, see Tools/Test Manager...
Also there are others tools, see [Cleaning Up PL/SQL Practices|http://www.oracle.com/technology/oramag/oracle/04-mar/o24tech_plsql.html] and specifically oUnit

  • PL-SQL learning

    Hi friends,
What book do you recommend for me that could dominate PL-SQL?
    Also sites of learning.
    thanks

I'm not sure about dominating, but Oracle PL/SQL by Steven Feuerstein with Bill Pribyl (and contributions from many others) is excellent.
I can also recommend Mastering Oracle PL/SQL: Practical Solutions by Connor MacDonald.
Anything by Tom Kyte is good, though he focusses on understanding and using the database rather than specifically the PL/SQL programming language, and Jonathan Lewis is good for understanding the optimizer. While I'm at it, Christian Antognini's Troubleshooting Oracle Performance is another one worth looking at for an Oracle developer (particularly on understanding execution plans).

  • Literature for learning PL/SQL

    Hi all
Can someone advise me about good books to learn PL/SQL. I am newbie.

Oracle PL/SQL Programming by Steven Feuerstein & Bill Pribyl is very good.
I also liked Mastering Oracle PL/SQL: Practical Solutions by Connor McDonald.
I haven't read the Tim Hall one but I'm sure it's worth a look if you are not put off by the publisher's fondness for annoying marketing phrases phrases like "Expert Secrets" and "High Performance Programming".
Avoid Oracle Database 10g PL/SQL Programming (Oracle Press), Urman/Hardman/Mclaughlin, it's terrible.

  • Procedure failed while using bulk collect into clause and works with cursor

    hi all,
I am using "BULK collect into" clause in my procedure and it is failing after 21 minutes and gives the error "end of file communication channel".
after this error comes when i tried to connect database it is giving following error.
ORA -01034 - Oracle not available.
ORA- 27101 - shared memory realm does not exist.

when i use cursor instead of BULK COLLECT INTO clause it is running successful.

    Shyam,
    I agree with Billy.
Why are you not using an INSERT..SELECT ?
Also, what are you trying to achieve by
    - incremental commits?
    - copying data from one table to another (using expensive I/O)?
    - using dynamic DML?
Most of these approaches are typically wrong - and not recommended for scalable and performant Oracle applications.I could see you using a CURSOR FOR LOOP if you were changing the data being inserted in such a way that you couldn't encapsulate the changes in a query, but you are doing a straight insert into the table from your Cursor. A much more efficient way would be to use the following modifications I made to your code example:
    PROCEDURE WORK_KIOSK_FULL(AN_JOBID   IN NUMBER,
                              AC_SQLCODE OUT VARCHAR2,
                              AC_SQLERRM OUT VARCHAR2) IS
    BEGIN
       EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'truncate table crstools.drt_bom_work_kiosk';
/* Note:  The APPEND hint forces a Direct Path INSERT (see Link below code sample) and is combined with the NOLOGGING Hint */
/*        To dramtically increase performance.  The Direct Path INSERT inserts records above the High-Water Mark on the table. */
       INSERT /*+ APPEND NOLOGGING */ INTO CRSTOOLS.DRT_BOM_WORK_KIOSK

  • Is there any technique to get notification on data updates.

    Case:
*1.* Some common data set is being loaded to Application scope of an Enterprise Application (assume it's something just like a java-Hashtable or any other Map object which holds currency codes and currency rates respectively).
*2.* Another user updates database currency rates through any other application.
    Line: -----
    Question:
h4. "Is there any technique or oracle API that we can use to send a notification about the data upgrade, or directly fire an event so that it could upgrade the values of above mentioned Enterprise Application?"

Thanks a lot! (A reply within 2 minutes!!! Can't believe even)
These days I'm on a hard situation of shaking off the malicious coding of an existing Enterprise Application. I could do it for all the EJBs, Other java files, Servlets and HTML files within last few months. We could notice a significant improvement after that, and now It's time to use better SQL practices instead of what we have now in that applications.Unfortunatly, the programmers who has done this before have never used at least a 'StringBuffer (Can't use StringBuilder anyway as we still use Websphere IDE 5.1 with java 1.3) to append SQL query segments. They have just used '+' sign with long Strings.
So I wanted to use all the best practices while replacing them.
But I'm not someone who really have a good knowledge of 'PL/SQL'. So I really appreciate the help of you all, and Thanks for providing me information so quickly! They really helped me!

  • AUSOUG/OAUG 2006 Australian conference - database content

The AUSOUG and OAUG committees are very excited to announce the Australian 2006 conference series is less than three months away. While our American neighbours are focusing on Oracle OpenWorld in October, and our UKOUG friends on their (extended!) November conference, Australians will not miss out with the largest Oracle user group conference in Australia to date. • Best Way To Get Back In The Game

    Hello All,
I am at a point where I need to re-train myself to get marketable again.  I have been out of the SQL Server arena since 2009.  At that point I was supporting a large SQL Server 2000 environment.  I have been a DBA my entire career so
I know I can come up to speed quickly.
Can anyone point me in the right direction for training alternatives, either online or at a facility.  I live in West Palm Beach.  I feel at this point I really need to get a Microsoft Certification.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    In addition to
MS certification, you need hands-on experience.   Purchase (around $50) a copy of SQL Server 2014 Developer Edition:

Start training from books, videos & online. Always (always!!!) practice along on your own copy of SQL Server.
