SQL query to select maximum

Dear all,
I have a table called "Orders" for a webshop that contains order ID, product ID, product quantity and price per unit. To insert a new order I want to get the highest order ID first and increase it by one, to be used as the new order ID.
Here is the code:
String orderIDquery = "SELECT MAX(OrderID) FROM Orders";
          int orderID = 0;
          try
               rst = stm.executeQuery(orderIDquery);
               if(rst == null)
                    orderID = 1;
               else
                    rst.next();
                    orderID = rst.getInt("OrderID");
                    orderID++;
          catch(SQLException e)
               out.println(e.toString());
          out.println(orderID);For some reason, I get the SQL exception "column not found" from the "getInt" command, although the column by the name "OrderID" is clearly present in the table.
Any ideas what could be wrong?

Any ideas what could be wrong?You don't have a column named "OrderID" in that Query. You can either refer to the column by number (1) or alias it in your sql and refer to it by the alias name (SELECT MAX(OrderID) AS SomeColumnName FROM Orders".

  • SQL Query To Select The 5th Element

    In the report I am currently working on, I am using an Add Command custom SQL query to pull the data that I need. The structure is a Call and a list of associated Activities. In this particular scenario, there are 8 activity notes for a type of call and I want to return the 5th one. The activity notes are a specific sequence of captured actions and I need the note from the 5th step in the sequence.
    This is what I have come up with:
    SELECT CALL.call_id,
         (select top 1 from (select top 5 CONVERT(char(8000),ACTIVITY.activity_note) from ACTIVITY
          where CALL.call_id = ACTIVITY.call_id
          order by ACTIVITY.creat_date desc))
         as activity_tx
    FROM CALL
    The intent of the Top 5 was to get the first 5 activity notes, of which the 5th note would be the last, then reverse sort them so I could take the Top 1 (which would be the 5th of 8). But I am getting a vague syntax error between "from" and "order by". Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Who thought he had a solution but is flummoxed he can't bring it home...

    Hello,
    Let me explain that Crystal assumes the user knows how to write SQL. We only report on the data provided by the SQL you write.
    I did a quick search using Microsofts new search engine - www.bing.com and it returned this as well as lots more:
    http://forums.devshed.com/php-development-5/how-to-access-a-certain-element-in-the-results-of-606217.html
    Try searching in MSSQL's site also for more info on how to get the results you are looking for.
    Thank you

  • Need of SQL query in selecting distinct values from two tables

    hi,
    I need a query for selecting distinct values from two tables with one condition.
    for eg:
    there are two tables a & b.
    in table a there are values like age,sex,name,empno and in table b valuses are such as age,salary,DOJ,empno.
    here what i need is with the help of empno as unique field,i need to select distinct values from two tables (ie) except age.
    can anybody please help me.
    Thanks in advance,
    Ratheesh

    Not sure what you mean either, but perhaps this will start a dialog:
    SELECT DISTINCT a.empno,
                    a.name,
                    a.sex,
                    b.salary,
                    b.doj
    FROM    a,
            b
    WHERE   a.empno = b.empno;Greg

  • Form on a SQL Query - doesn't work with SELECT * - bug or feature ?

    When I do this,
    Create Page -> Page with Component -> Form -> Form on a SQL Query -> SELECT * FROM EMP
    I do not get any items displayed and it creates a simple HTML region / page. Do we have to necessarily specify the column names ?
    Iam looking at a way to see if any addition of columns in the table does not involve IT intervention in recreating the form.
    When we try to create with Form on a SQL Query, then shouldn't it be similar to the Report where the same thing works, if I give SELECT function_returning_columns() from DUAL even then the same thing happens where it creates an ITEM called functions_returning_columns() it creates HTML region
    I asked a related question with no answer :-( in
    Dynamic Creation of Items in Runtime through Application UI

    Hi Marc,
    Thanks. I just tried something like this. Taking the EMP table example, (it doesn't matter which table), I created a region based on a Pl/Sql function returning SQL query
    ( I selected the vertical report template including nulls to display it like a form ) :
    DECLARE
    v_sql VARCHAR2(3000) ;
    mn_idx NUMBER := 1 ;
    BEGIN
    v_sql := 'SELECT ' ;
    FOR recs IN (SELECT * FROM ALL_TAB_COLUMNS WHERE TABLE_NAME = 'EMP' ORDER BY COLUMN_ID)
    LOOP
    v_sql := v_sql || 'HTMLDB_ITEM.TEXT(' || mn_idx || ',' ||
    recs.column_name || ') ' || recs.column_name || ', ' ;
    mn_idx := mn_idx + 1 ;
    END LOOP ;
    v_sql := SUBSTR(v_sql, 1, LENGTH(v_sql) -2) ;
    v_sql := v_sql || ' FROM EMP WHERE EMPNO = 7369 ORDER BY 1 ' ;
    RETURN v_sql ;
    END ;
    This allowed me to do my updates etc.., Then I created a button called 'Apply' and a process called 'update_changes' on button click and defined this:
    DECLARE
    v_sql varchar2(1000) ;
    mn_ctr NUMBER := 1 ;
    BEGIN
    v_sql := 'BEGIN UPDATE EMP SET ' ;
    FOR recs IN (select COLUMN_ID, COLUMN_NAME, DATA_TYPE
    from all_tab_columns where table_name = 'EMP'
    ORDER BY COLUMN_ID) loop
    -- Make changes here if required- this is assuming 9 columns --
    v_sql := v_sql || recs.column_name || ' = HTMLDB_APPLICATION.G_F0' || mn_ctr || '(1),' ;
    mn_ctr := mn_ctr + 1;
    end loop ;
    v_sql := substr(v_sql, 1, length(v_sql) - 1) ;
    v_sql := v_sql || ' WHERE EMPNO = 7369; END ;' ;
    execute immediate (v_sql) ;
    END ;
    Since this is for example, I didn't include code for Checksum and hardcoded empno = condition and have provision for 9 columns. I made some changes and tried saving it and I was able to do it.
    I altered the table to add a column / drop a column and when I relogin, Iam able to see the changes.
    Can you tell me if there could be any drawbacks in this approach ?.

  • Sql Query (updateable Report) returning ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value

    Hi I have a Sql Query Report Region as defined below. On the report attributes I am not using any "Row Selector". In a After submit process I try to print out the results of the value I have entered in as a value in updatable report and i get the error: I am doing this as a test before i use the data to insert into another table...
    I receive this error if I enter in a characters (not numeric) into the "Field Value" field.:
    ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character to number conversion error.
    If I enter in a numeric into the "Field Value" text box, then I get the value displayed back without error. I need to be able to enter a varchar value without error.
    My SQL QUERY is:
    select i.INDEXED_FIELD_ID, i.field_name,
    HTMLDB_ITEM.TEXT(3,d.indexed_field_value) field_value,
    decode(f.required, 0, 'O', 1, 'R', 'NOT USED') REQUIRED
    from XXVG_EFILE_DOCUMENT_FIELDS D,
    xxvg_efile_type_fields f, xxvg_efile_indexed_fields i
    WHERE f.indexed_field_id = i.indexed_field_id
    and f.required in (0,1)
    and i.indexed_field_id = d.indexed_field_id(+)
    and d.document_id(+) = -1
    and f.document_type_id = :p21_doc_type
    My after submit process is the following...**Note** I am using P21_test as a field just to display my test. I receive the value back just fine without error if numeric. If varchar, that is when the problems occur. I have used just a length variable like the lettter 't' for testing and still receive the error.
    DECLARE
    vRow BINARY_INTEGER;
    BEGIN
    -- update field values
    FOR i IN 1 .. HTMLDB_APPLICATION.g_f03.COUNT -- your field value
    LOOP
    vRow := HTMLDB_APPLICATION.g_f03(i);
    IF vRow is Not NULL --means the field has data in it.
    THEN
    :p21_test := HTMLDB_APPLICATION.G_F03(i); --set a variable to the field with data.
    END IF;
    END LOOP;
    END;
    Is there a conversion I need to do? I do not want to do this via checkboxes as I dont want the user have to check a checkbox and then enter a value in. I just want a blank text box the user can enter a value in and then i can do an insert.
    Thanks So much.

    Thanks Scott, That did do the trick as the varchar is now displayed of the entered item.
    How do i also display the value of indexed_field_id as well.
    I have an insert where i need the indexed field id and the entered field value.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Passing a string into an SQL query IN statement

    Hello,
    I need to connect to a database to pull some data to dynamically create a form based on the data I pull back. My SQL query works fine when I manually run it through a SQL client tool, but when I try to pass it through my workflow I'm having trouble with passing my string into the IN part of the statement. So if for example my SQL query is:
    SELECT Field1, Field2, Field3 FROM Table1 WHERE Field4 IN (?)
    I have a process variable that has the string I'm trying to pass into the ?, but I don't seem to be able to get the query to run. I have tried setting up my query to run as a Parameterized Query (passing my string process variable into the ?), and by setting the query up through xPath (where I am calling my process variable with an xPath declaration), but am not having any luck.
    The process variable I am trying to pass is formatted such that I'm passing 'Value1','Value2','Value3' but I can reformat this string if need be. Even with using test data I can't get the query to return anything. For test data I have tried: 'Value1','Value2','Value3' ; Value1','Value2','Value3 ; Value1,Value2,Value3 but the query never returns any data. I can't seem to see how to format the string to pass into the query. The Query will work with a single Value in the test data, but as soon as I try to pass multiple values within the string it fails. Any suggestions?

    The problem looks to be a limit on what I can pass into the SQL query component. My string is coming from data returned from another database. I take the xml output from that database call, pass it through a set variable component to remove my xml tags from the string, and then format the string in a script component (I have to do it this way because of the way the data coming out of my first database call). I've put in loggers, and can see that the string I'm passing into my query that is giving me problems, is formatted the same way as if I were to use the concat function Scott listed above. It looks like there is a limitation on what can be passed in my variable. I have tried creating my entire SQL query statement in a set variable component, and then just calling the process variable that holds that statement, but there is a character limit of 128 character for what can be passed in a variable through xpath in the SQL query component.
    The next thing I tried was changing my SQL where clause. Instead of passing my variable directly into the IN statement I set up a PATINDEX('%:'+countyname+ ':%', ?) > 0 call to check for the values in my database call. As you can see I took out the "," that I was passing as part of my string, thinking that the SQL component was getting confused by them, and placed ":" characters around my values being passed in my string variable. No matter what I try to do though I'm not able to get the query to run. The component looks like it is taking my string, and is seeing the whole thing as a string instead of passing it as individual values within a string.
    I think I'm getting close, but I keep getting a Content not allowed in prolog exception in the server logs.

  • Set the column length in an sql query

    Is there a way to set the column length in a query without using sqlplus commands like row size and format column.
    I'd like to do it just from the sql query itself.

  • IF NEW VARIABLE IN SQL QUERY, DISPLAYS AS LAST COLUMN + rpad not working

    Hello everybody and thank you in advance,
    1) if I add a new variable to my sql query to select a column which was already in the table, it shows it in the report table as the Last column to the right. That is, if I add "street" to
    something like city, postcode, street, store, manager, etc, instead of placing street between postcode and store, it places it as i said as the last column to the right.
    2) When values are entered into the cells of the tables, yes, they do expand it to their needed lenght, But, only if it is one word. If it is two, like when i enter the value "very good"
    then it takes two lines so as with a carriage return within the cell, thus, making it too high the row. I tried to padd spaces with rpad but it did not work. something like rpad(stock, 20,' ')
    I must say that the table is in the same page where there is a Form, so as the table grows in lenth it is actually squeezing the form located right on its left.
    3) rpad did not work with the most simple syntax, but less would with what i need because it turns out i am using DECODE in order to do a conversion between value displayed and
    value returned in my select list of values, something like : DECODE (TO_CHAR (stock),'1','Deficient','2','Average','3','Good','4','Very Good',null) AS stock,
    so, i have tried to put the rpad there in several places but either it gave parsing error or it left the column empty not picking any values.
    thank you very much
    Alvaro

    Alvaro
    1) That is standard behaviour of apex builder. You can change the display order with the arrows in the report attributes column report.
    2) You will have to play with the style attributes of the column to accomplice this. For instance style="white-space:pre;" in the Element Attributes of the column attributes. White-space:normal would thread several space (' ') as 1. So no matter how many you add with rpad they will be shown as 1.
    Or set a width either as attibute or in a style class for that column.

  • Parse User Pasted Text and use in SQL query

    I am trying to take some user pasted text (typically would come from Excel) and parse those values and put into a query.
    text area:
    ":P11_text"
    query:
    "select *
    from table
    where column in :P11_text;"
    I have tried some variations of replace and translate in order to parse that list of values...something like: translate(:P11_text, chr(10)||chr(13), ',' ).....and many variations of this.
    I have been able to replace the end of lines with the commas, but it appears that I am not getting my single quotes captured, even when trying to force them in. The best attempt returned single quotes and commas in between values but not at the beginning and end of the list of values.
    I would bet that there is an easy way to accomplish this or an easy way to accomplish the requirement in a different way altogether.
    Please point me in the right direction.

    I finally got this one figured out!
    create or replace type myTableType as table
    of varchar2(4000)
    create or replace
    function in_list( p_string in varchar2 ) return myTableType
    as
    l_string long default p_string || ',';
    l_data myTableType := myTableType();
    n number;
    begin
    loop
    exit when l_string is null;
    n := instr( l_string, ',' );
    l_data.extend;
    l_data(l_data.count) :=
    ltrim( rtrim( substr( l_string, 1, n-1 ) ) );
    l_string := substr( l_string, n+1 );
    end loop;
    return l_data;
    end;
    --The SQL Query is:
    select *
    from t wher c in (select *
    from THE
    ( select cast( in_list(translate(:p10_prolist,chr(10)||chr(13),',')) as
    mytableType ) from dual ) a);

    String strName="";
    //here strName is searching key value.
    String strQueryString="SELECT * FROM Authors WHERE name='" strName "'";
    ResultSet rs=st.executeQuery(strQueryString);
    if strName value is "yijun_lee",that will return all information which the name columns value is "yijun_lee" with SQL Query sentence SELECT * FROM Authors WHERE name='yijun_lee'
    but if strName value is "yijun ' lee",that value contains a '.that will error!
    how to do?
    thanks very much!

    You could parse <strName > and insert another ' for each '
    A concrete example would be SELECT * FROM Authors WHERE name='yijun '' lee'HTH

  • SQL query from toplink expression

    Hi,
    I have a oracle.toplink.expressions.Expression object with me which has been created using oracle.toplink.expressions.ExpressionBuilder. I want to find its equivalent SQL query(say select emp.empname,emp.empId from employee emp) which will be fired in order to fetch data i.e. find its equivalent Statement/PreparedStatement or anything which will help me obtain the raw SQL statement about to be fired.
    Please let me know if there is any soln.
    Thanks,
    Adithya.

    You can create ReadAllQuery with the expression and get the query's SQL using query.prepareCall() and then query.getSQLString().
