SQL Server 2008 on the Web/App server for BPC 7.0
In a multi-server environment (DB/OLAP on a 64-bit platform, Web/App on a 32-bit platform), is it necessary to have SQL Server on the Web/App server if Reporting Services is not used? Could you explain why SQL Server is needed on this server if Reporting Services is not used?
Hi
Reporting Service is a requirement for BPC. If it is not deployed on App Server, it can be deployed elsewhere but is required.
Other SQL related things that go on App Server include:
Reporting Services
Shared Features
Client Tools Connectivity
Management Tools - Complete
Business Intelligence Development Studio
Integration Services
Client Tools Backward Compatibility
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility Components from Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Feature Pack
Reporting Services/Integration Service requires SQL license(s). Standard ediiton of these can be used if you are not performing Load Balanced deployement.

Using SQL Server Reporting Services Standard edtion on the Web/App server
I would like some clarification of when is it a supported configuration to use SQL Reporting Services Standard Edtion with BPC 7.0M.
If you have a standard Multi-server installation with WEB/APP/RS/IS on one server and SQL/AS on the other server, is SQL Reporting service required to be Enterprise Edition? The v7.0M SP4 installation guide is a bit confusing on this because it says Reporting Services standard edition is supported, but then it says that SQL Enterprise Edition is required on the web/app server.
The Web/app would have SQL Management tools (edition-independent), Integration Services (edition-independent) and Reporting Services (Standard is allowed?) - so that would seem to mean that you can have SQL Standard edition on the front-end Web/App server.
Please advise as to what we need to tell customers going forward.
thanks,
Tony DeStefanisHi Tony,
SQL Server SE is supported for web/application server but you have limitation.
If you need multiple application server then RS has to be installed into a web farm and in thta case SE can not be installed it is required EE.
But if you have just one application server SQL server SE can be used without any problem.
More than that RS can be a complete separate server it is not necessary to be in any of SAP BPC server (web/application or database server) so in that case again you can use SE without any problem.
EE is required just when you need high availability and in that case you need to install RS into a web farm.
I hope this clarify a little bit when you can use and when you can not use SE for RS.

How to find out the web/app server used by OBIEE and OBIEE HomePath (Urgent
Hi All ,
I have two questions
1) I wanted to know the OBIEE home path if it is installed on the some other machine (Client's Machine).
I wanted to update the .css files present on the machine, but before updating the file i should know the home path, to reach the desired .css file and update accordingly. I dont know where they have installed OBIEE.By default OBIEE home is (c:\) but if the user has selected some other drive then, how we can find the OBIEE Home path?
I have the access to the machine.
2) The path of the CSS files depends on the web server used by OBIEE.
When IIS web server is used, the CSS files in OracleBI_HOME\web\app\res directory
when OC4J is used, the CSS files in OracleBI_HOME\oc4j_bi\j2ee\home\applications\analytics\analytics\res
so inorder to update i must know which server is being used.
Is there any way to find out which web application server is installed on the clients machine?
Thanks in advance.!!!!!Please see responses to your first posting here: OBI EE Home Path

Office Web Apps Server IIS site disappeared?
I deployed an Office Web Apps server on a dedicated VM to be used for Lync 2013. After the initial installation / set up, I confirmed the discovery URL. It worked fine.
However, after one point in time, PowerPoint Presentations stopped working. When trying to share a PPT presentation, the Lync client popped up a message saying "Sorry, we couldn't upload <ppt file name> because we're having trouble connecting
to the service. If this keeps happening, try contacting your support team". I've done many many Lync and Office Web Apps install myself previously, and never had a message pop up like the one I saw in this case.
I tried going to the Web Apps discovery URL again, and it didn't get anywhere. I got on the Web Apps server and all the IIS sites were wiped.
I tried uninstalling the Office Web Apps server and reinstalling, but from that point on, IIS sites for Web Apps just would not appear under IIS manager.
Has anyone had similar issue with Office Web Apps?
Thanks,
Andrew Shin, TechNet Forum repliesHello,
Maybe the windows update is active and configured to Automatically download and installed update of Office Web Apps and this behavior just breaking your setup.
Try
remove the farm of WAC
Install SP1
and start new deployment of farm.

Office Web App - Use for viewing but not for editing
Hello,
i'm searching for a possibility to use the web app server only for viewing documents but not for editing.
I want to accomplish this for docs and ppts.
So the possibility to edit in Web App should be greyed out or even better, vanish completely.
Best regards

The best solution is to create table type and pass the DataTable as table-valued parameter. I have an article on my web site about this:
http://www.sommarskog.se/arrays-in-sql-2008.html
The full article is a bit of overkill for what you are doing right now, but just the few first pages should get you going.

How can i check the office web app server(wac client) is calling custom WOPI host?
I am getting an error when I testing my wopi host(which is the same as
example) with Office Web app server "Sorry, there was a problem and we can't open this document. If this happens again, try opening the document in Microsoft Word."
1-how can find the log files of this error?
2-how can i check the office web app server(wac client) is calling my WOPI host?
I am not sure about cumunication between owa to wopi host. I actually dont know how to implement checkfile and getfile functions to wopi host for waiting for call back from owa client.
Note:I am sure that office web app server is configured true. Because i test it with sharepoint 2013 and editing and viewing is working well.Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that
CheckFileInfo is how the WOPI application gets information about the file and the permissions a user has on the file. It should have a URL that looks like this:
While CheckFileInfo provides information about a file, GetFile returns the file itself. It should have a URL that looks like this:
There is a great article for your reference.

You can also refer to the following article which is about building an Office Web Apps(OWA) WOPI Host.

What does the Sun App Server Use as a web container?
Does the Sun App Server use tomcat? Or is it some derivative of Tomcat?
thanks for the info.Thanks.
Just to clarify for any others who are interested, heres the deal:
1) Package the static HTML files using the 'deploytool' (See Packaging Web Modules in Chapter 3 of The J2EE(TM) 1.4 Tutorial). This creates a .war file with the required deployment descriptors(?); anyway it creates a bunch of .xml files that have the right data in them.
2) Take the .war file and drop it in the 'quick deploy' icon (copies the .war file to the 'autodeploy' directory for the App Server instance).
Anyhow thats the drill.
Good luck. -
Hi,
I have recently updated the Office Web Apps Server to the June 2013 Cumulative Update (KB2817350) which was published with the new features that allow rendering of freeze pane, hide/un-hide the excel worksheet and row/columns, Header
Row Snapping, Sorting, Data Validation and Autocomplete. i have followed the TechNet article (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj966220.aspx)
to update the office web apps server. Current setup is a SharePoint 2013, SQL 2012 and Office Web Apps server. All server are installed on Windows server 2012.
3vild3vilHi,
Sorry to inform you that these new features are specific to cloud Excel Web App in both SkyDrive and Office365. There is no update available for on-premise Excel Web Apps installed locally

Ssl and web app server: there's content which is not secure
Hello,
We have implemented ssl in our intranet site ( web front server, Web app server, sql server - everything ) .
Yet, In Https (and I.E) and document library , when I press the "..." , I get an warning: "only secure content is displayed" and the file preview doesn't show anything. If I select "show all content", the file preview shows
the file.
If I press "View in browser", I get the same message. If I press "show all content" I see the file, otherwise the file doesn't show.
Looking at the fiddler, it looks like some connections with the (sharepoint) application server aren't secured.
Sample unsecured http gets are:
http://ApplicationServer.mysite.gr/wv/ResReader.ashx?n=p1.img&WOPIsrc=http%3A%2F%Intranet%2Fsites%2FDNY%2F_vti_bin%2Fwopi.ashx%2Ffiles%2F42da77c08cd94b67a1c413ae39a71c58&access_token=eyJ0eBIgBigToken
http://ApplicationServer.mysite.com/wv/ResReader.ashx?n=p1.img&v=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000602&usid=5fae4f7f-d4d6-4a21-a465-2fe24ded9519&WOPIsrc=http%3A%2F%2FIntranetSite%2Fsites%2FDNY%2F_vti_bin%2Fwopi.ashx%2Ffiles%2F42da77c08cd94b67a1c413ae39a71c58&access_token=BIgBigToken
- this one is an image of the file.
Having these unsecure gets, I have problems accepting that the site is totally secured.
is the (sharepoint) application server the source of the problem?
Thank you
ChristosHi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to show all content after you implemented ssl in intranet site.
Please make sure you configure SSL correctly. You can refer to:
Configure SSL for SharePoint 2013
IE does provide an option which can be configured to automatically display all content, both secure and non-secure content, on web pages that come with mixed content.
You can display all mixed contents in IE to suppress and disable any warning message on secure and/or non-secure content.
More information:
How to Disable Only Secure Content is Displayed in IE (Always Show All Mixed Content)
Stop the "page contains secure and nonsecure items" warning

High availability for Lync 2013 persistent chat server and office web app server
I have 1500 users, need HA in primary data center and DR also. looking for HA and DR solution for persistent chat server and office web app server.
is below correct?
1. 2 persistent chat server in a pool of primary data center and 1 in DR. can this be reduced or any changes?
2. 2 Office web app server in a pool of primary data center and 1 in DR. can this be reduced or any changes?
also do i need HLB for both roles?1) In Lync Server 2013, there are improvements in both high availability and disaster recovery:
High availability improvements: SQL Server mirroring is used to provide high availability for the Persistent Chat Server content database and Persistent Chat compliance database within a data center (in-site).
Disaster recovery improvements: Persistent Chat Server supports a stretched pool architecture that enables a single Persistent Chat Server pool to be stretched across two sites (that is, a single logical pool in the topology, with servers in the pool physically
located across two sites). SQL Server Log Shipping is used for cross-site disaster recovery.
For more information about high availability and disaster recovery, see
Configuring Persistent Chat Server for High Availability and Disaster Recovery in the Deployment documentation.
2) for HA & DR, you can 2 Office web app server in a pool of primary data center and 1 in DR. and You will need HLB for office web app servers

Using Office Web Apps Server with SharePoint Foundation 2013
I want to know whether I can configure Office Web Apps server to edit Excel documents on a SharePoint Foundation 2013 site.
I came across a TechNet article that states that "When used together with SharePoint Server 2013, Office Web Apps Server provides updated versions of Word Web App, Excel Web App, PowerPoint Web App, and OneNote Web App".
However, later in the same article, it states "If your organization licenses Office 2013 through a Volume Licensing program, you can enable Office Web Apps editing for SharePoint 2013 on-premises" (without mentioning Foundation or Server).Hi Lemesnil,
The Office Web App server should support the Edit licenses for SharePoin Foundation 2013, Office Web App is free to
download, you can also try installing and configuring in a test environment, see more from the below article applied to SharePoint Foundation 2013.
