SQL Server 2014 AG + Clustered Shared Volume

I am testing this scenario in a lab environment:
Node 1 + Node 2 = Failover Instance
Node 3 = Secondary Availability Group.
I am using Shared Clustered Volumes for the Failover Cluster. This causes the volumes to appear on NODE 3 with the same paths.
That is expected.
Problem: If I add a datafile on the failover instance, it tries to add the file to Node 3 using the original path. This fails.
Because, that path already exists and locked as it's Node1/2's cluster volume path.
Any workarounds? With CSV, do I have to have different database locations? Is there any way to modify the clustered volume on one node only or drop from a node in the cluster without dropping the node from the cluster.
Thanks

Hello,
So, I'm not being critical or arguing I'm just responding to your post.
I hope MS does something about that. It is unacceptable for my company (online retail) to suffer through that.
If the resources would have been architected differently, this wouldn't have been an issue. Does it suck that the way you wanted to do it didn't work the way you thought - sure. Are there other ways that get to the same thing? Yep. Were you forced by the
infrastructure teams? Maybe, who know. My point being that it could be done many other ways that wouldn't give you this problem - which to me means it wasn't properly thought out and tested before being implemented.
This is actually called out on page 7/8 of a good white-paper about this:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj215886.aspx
In any case, I figured out a hack which should not break anything.
Good luck. Personally, I'd redo the storage.

  • SQL 2014 FCI+AG on Clustered Shared Volumes design

    Hello,
    I was assigned the task to design a new SQL 2014 environment for my company. Our current environment consists of two clusters of 4 nodes each (8 nodes total for the two clusters) in two datacenters (let's say LA & NY).
    Each datacenter is both primary & DR for different applications. Each cluster is active/active and has 9 SQL instances - 1 DEV/2 UAT/4 PROD/2 DR.
    We are using Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 + SQL 2008 R2 SP2 FCIs for HA + DBM for DR, storage is symmetric, LUNs are coming from NetApp SAN filers.
    Due to the consolidated nature of the current SQL clusters (some hold 100+ DBs for different applications), the new platform - Windows 2012 R2 and that one WSFC cluster will be used, I decided to go with a new build instead of upgrade.
    My plan for the migration to SQL 2014 is as follows:
    1. Evict two nodes from each cluster, the 9 SQLs in each datacenter will run on two nodes and I will have two nodes more per site to build the new environment.
    Average CPU utilization for each node is 10-20%, total max memory of all SQL Servers per site is 256GB RAM, each node has 2 CPUs x 8 cores each with 256GB RAM. SQLs will still run on two nodes with reasonable performance.
    Since the same number of cores is used and we pay SA, there will be no increase in licensing costs for the time of migration to SQL 2014 and to obsolete the SQL 2008 R2 environment.
    2. The new cluster will consists of 4 nodes with Windows 2012 R2 (2 in NY and 2 in LA) and will have Node+FileShare majority quorum model with Cluster Managed voting enabled.
    3. New SQL 2014 FCIs will be built (9 per site) and will use Clustered Shared Volumes + AlwaysON Availability Groups. Once the new environment is built, databases will be migrated by backup/restore.
    Since we will have AlwaysON FCIs+AlwaysON AGs I'm aware that automatic failover cannot be used and the complications with addition of data files on primary databases, that's fine (file paths will be different of primary and DR SQL instances).
    My question is - is this a supported configuration from Microsoft - AlwaysON AGs running on CSVs in a multi-site cluster?
    I am aware that CSVs are something new for the SQL world, so what are the things I should take into consideration when building this solution? Are there any pitfalls to be wary of?
    Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
    Thank you in advance,

    First, consider building a separate Hyper-V cluster in each data center, and running SQL Server in VMs.
    In your proposed configuration if you loose connectivity between your data centers, half of your nodes will loose quorum and go offline.  It's simpler to maintain quorum seperately in each data center when trying to run active-active.
    Hyper-V adds a bunch of useful stuff, like live migration, storage migration, and basic HA and DR without guest clustering.  And the implementation of Hyper-V on CSV is a very common pattern.
    You can then present shared hard disks to your SQL VMs to create a FCI on a guest cluster.  See
    Deploy a Guest Cluster Using a Shared Virtual Hard Disk
    Or you can simply use stand-alone instances on the guests, and use AlwaysOn AGs for rolling upgrades and DR.
    That said, you proposed configuration is supported.  It's a variant of the solution outlined here
    AlwaysOn Architecture Guide: Building a High Availability and Disaster Recovery Solution by Using Failover Cluster Instances and Availability Groups
    The cluster would have asymmetric storage, with the nodes in each data center sharing LUNs (whether on CSVs or not), but the LUNs in a data center would not be visible to the nodes in the other datacenter.  You can and should use the same path names
    on the primary and DR instances, as outlined in the whitepaper.  This is important because otherwise file and filegroup operations will suspend the AlwaysOn data movement.

  • SQL Server 2014 - ColumnStore index Clustered with Merge Join

    Hi All,
    I would like to know in SQL Server 2014, the new feature "Clustered Columnstore". I had inserted 9 millions of records in to a clustered columnstore table.
    Then i do a merge join query to insert and update to another table. The Merge join query is as below :
    MERGE [dbo].[Temp_FactSales] AS TARGET
    USING [dbo].[FactSales_9m] AS SOURCE
    ON
    TARGET.SALESID = SOURCE.SALESID
    WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET
    THEN INSERT
    [listid],
    [sellerid],
    [buyerid],
    [eventid],
    [dateid],
    [qtysold],
    [pricepaid],
    [commission],
    [saletime]
    VALUES
    SOURCE.[listid],
    SOURCE.[sellerid],
    SOURCE.[buyerid],
    SOURCE.[eventid],
    SOURCE.[dateid],
    SOURCE.[qtysold],
    SOURCE.[pricepaid],
    SOURCE.[commission],
    SOURCE.[saletime]
    WHEN MATCHED THEN
    UPDATE
    SET
        TARGET.[listid] = SOURCE.[listid],
    TARGET.[sellerid] = SOURCE.[sellerid],
    TARGET.[buyerid] = SOURCE.[buyerid],
    TARGET.[eventid] = SOURCE.[eventid],
    TARGET.[dateid] = SOURCE.[dateid],
    TARGET.[qtysold] = SOURCE.[qtysold],
    TARGET.[pricepaid] = SOURCE.[pricepaid],
    TARGET.[commission] = SOURCE.[commission],
    TARGET.[saletime] = SOURCE.[saletime]
    The total execute time is  about 10 mins. However if i removed the Columnstore index in the table which using normal primary key. Then the execution time is less than 1 mins.
    My question is when using "merge join", is this the behavior for columnstore index ? As from what i read, Columnstore index is great performance in read the data but not doing "Insert, update and Delete"?
    Hope anyone can help.
    Thanks a lot.

  • SQL Server 2014 Bug - with Clustered Index On Temp Table with Identity Column

    Hi,
    Here's a stored procedure.  (It could be shorter, but this will show the problem.)
              CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.SGTEST_TBD_20141030 AS
              IF OBJECT_ID('TempDB..#Temp') IS NOT NULL
                 DROP TABLE #Temp
              CREATE TABLE #Temp
               Col1        INT NULL
              ,Col2        INT IDENTITY NOT NULL
              ,Col3        INT NOT NULL
              CREATE CLUSTERED INDEX ix_cl ON #Temp(Col2)
              SET IDENTITY_INSERT #Temp ON;
              RAISERROR('Preparing to INSERT INTO #Temp...',0,1) WITH NOWAIT;
              INSERT INTO #Temp (Col1, Col2, Col3)
              SELECT 1,2,3
              RAISERROR('Insert Success!!!',0,1) WITH NOWAIT;
              SET IDENTITY_INSERT #Temp OFF;
    In SQL Server 2014, If I execute this (EXEC dbo.SGTEST_TBD_20141030)   It works.   If I execute it a second time - It fails hard with:
            Msg 0, Level 11, State 0, Line 0
            A severe error occurred on the current command.  The results, if any, should be discarded.
            Msg 0, Level 20, State 0, Line 0
            A severe error occurred on the current command.  The results, if any, should be discarded.
    In SQL Server 2012, I can execute it over and over, with no problem.  I've discovered two work-a-rounds:
    1) Add "WITH RECOMPILE" to the SP CREATE/ALTER statement, or
    2) Declare the cluster index in the TABLE CREATE statement, e.g. ",UNIQUE CLUSTERED (COL2)"
    This second option only works though, if the column is unique.    I've opted for the "WITH RECOMPILE" for now.  But, thought I should share.

    Hi,
    I did not get any error Message:

  • Can SQL server 2014 instance be introduced into SQL server 2012 clustering

    Hello, everyone,
    We have SQL server clustering set up in place (it is actually windows clustering), I am wondering if it is possible to introduce SQL server 2014 instance
    into this clustering. Please share us your thoughts and experiences.
    Thanks

    if you are talking about SQL clustering -(FAILOVER CLUSTERED  INSTANCES) , yes, you can do that.
    you have windows cluster with nodea,nodeb....and you can install two different instances of failover clustered sql - sql 2012 and sql 2014.
    Hope it Helps!!

  • Upgrating SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 to SQL Server 2014 Standard "UpgradeFeatureSpecificRules: KJRTMUpgradeBlockRule"

    I've been searching for HOURS how to resolve this issue:
    I am trying to upgrade SQL Server 2008 R2 (Express Edition with advanced services) to SQL SERVER 2014 Standard edition, my first issue was to update the 2008 R2 to Service pack 2 on the first FEATURE RULE TEST, at this time on it's keep saying this:
    ======================================================================================
    Rule Check Result
    Rule "SQL Server 2008 R2 Service pack 2 or later is requered for upgrade.: failed.
    This SQL Server 2008 R2 features that have been selected to be upgraded to SQL Server 2014 are not at the require service pack. To continue with this upgrade, install SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 2 or lager to the selected instance and the shared features.
    =====================================================================================
    This is the Configuration Report issue:
    Microsoft SQL Server 2014 - System Configuration Check Report
    UpgradeFeatureSpecificRules: SQL Server 2014 Setup configuration checks for rules group 'UpgradeFeatureSpecificRules'
        KJRTMUpgradeBlockRule
    Checks if the currently selected SQL Server 2008 R2 features to upgrade are at the supported service pack.     Failed     The SQL Server 2008 R2 features that have been selected to be upgraded to SQL Server 2014 are not at the
    required service pack. To continue with this upgrade, install SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 2 or later to the selected instance and the shared features.
    ====================================================================================
    I try after hours and finally did install the Upgrade Advisor and got not issues, the last choice I was to uninstall the Management Studio because in other upgrade express versions got blocked, but in this new version of SQL Server 2014 I don't see any way
    out!!!
    Thanks.

    Hi again
    This is the scenario:
    -I have installed the SQL SERVER 2008 R2 With Advanced services (version 10.50.1600.1), and now my guest decide to upgrade to an STARNDARD version which nowadays Microsoft is offering the 2014 version.
    -As all IT Support and DBA I try to upgrade to SQL 2014 to check and see with requirements were missing or updates. The first check report only ask to upgrade to SQL SERVER 2008 R2 SP2 (version 10.51.2500.0) which I found in the optional update list and
    resolved immediately with the Windows Update service.
    -Finally, I realise doing the discovery report (suggested in the last post) is that Windows update only download the service pack 2 for SQL Server 2008 instead of the 2008 R2 (I downloaded manually) then the version was upgrade to 10.52.4000.0
    Next time I might download the updates manually and not loosing a lot hours with Windows Update, another point very important is that when SQL Server 2008 R2 is installed, create the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 folder at all programas in the Startup menu:
    with the SQL Server Installation Center, but there is not one R2, when you execute this one just show the 2008 installed features.
    Now we are on 12.0.2000.8
    Thanks anyway and all of you for your interest!!!

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Setup error: Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed

    Hi,
    Having this annoying error trying to install SQL Server 2014 (RTM). I saw it's been asked several times... But each post seems a different cause and no definitive answer...
    I'm not doing an upgrade, so no "sa account" issue.
    Tried different media. Even three different distributions: trial, Standard and Enterprise.
    Tried disabling Microsoft antivirus/firewall.
    Of course tried restarting, updating, installing, uninstalling, repairing, etc., etc.
    I noticed the users folders under C:\Users weren't created. (Maybe something related to permissions?) After playing around, I managed for the users to be created and the service started. Though I couldn't log in.

    Summary for last "repair" attempt:

  • Error 997. Overlapped I/O operation is in progress during SQL Server 2014 X64 Express

    I am trying to install SQL Management Studio from SQL Server 2014 X64 Express, however during installation, getting multiple identical errors:
    Error 997. Overlapped I/O operation is in progress
    Previously, someone posted similar question http://blogs.msdn.com/b/vsnetsetup/archive/2014/10/27/error-997-overlapped-i-o-operation-is-in-progress-kb2918614-breaks-windows-installer-service.aspx It was suggested to uninstall: KB3000988, KB2918614, I did so,
    but it didn't help. Also, tried to modify registry to add "product code" using ORCA tool. Maybe, I used wrong codes ? Thank you !

    Hi Alexander,
    According to your description, you encounter the error 997 when installing SQL Server 2014 Management Studio. This issue could be due to the account problem or third-party software scanning. Besides paSQuaLe's post, you could also check the following things.
    1. Check the account with which you log on to the server, make sure that it is not an account with temporary profile.
    2. Run SQL Server setup file locally on your computer and make sure that you choose ‘Run as administrator’ to run the setup.
    3. Disable any Anti-virus and reboot your server.
    4. Check for any problems with disk drive where you are installing SQL Server files.
    Regards,
    Michelle Li

    Thanks Shanky, that fixed my issue.  I reinstalled, specifying NT AUTHORITY\LOCALSYSTEM for the SQL Server Database Engine account.  After the successful installation, I used Sql Server Configuration Manager to change the account to LocalService
    (NT AUTHORITY\LocalService).  The Database Engine is restarting OK.
    So, my accounts are:
    SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER):  NT AUTHORITY\LocalService
    SQL Full-text Fiter Daemon Launcher (MSSQLSERVER):  NT Service\MSSQLFDLauncher
    SQL Server Reporting Services (MSSQLSERVER):  NT Service\ReportServer
    SQL Server Browser:  NT AUTHORITY\LOCALSERVICE
    SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER):  NT AUTHORITY\NETWORKSERVICE
    I check out the link http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143504.aspx#Serv_Perm.  I'm a bit confused how the NT Service\* accounts are created, such as NT Service\MSSQLSERVER.  However, I did see this http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191153.aspx#manual;
    perhaps I need to read it further.
    Regardless, this is my desktop machine, the installation is for development only, it's inside our network, and no external users will be accessing this SQL Server instance.  So, while I haven't fully read the details on running under LocalService, I
    believe this will meet my needs.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Beginner installing SQL Server 2014 for Excel Data Mining

    Hello, I'm a complete beginner with servers but Im desperately trying to gain access to the SQL server for use with the data mining addin for excel.
    Could someone please help. When I try to make a connection in Excel by choosing DATA MINING> <No Connection> New> it then asks me for a Server Name in the connect to Analysis Services box. How can I find out what my Sever name is please? I have
    tried all sorts of names that I have found such as SQLEXPRESS or localhost but nothing works. It also tells me to 'Ensure that the Server is running'. Another error message I receive: No connection can be
    made because 'the target machine actively refused it'.
    I would be really grateful for some troubleshooting tips.
    Thank you

    Hi Alberto,
    Thanks very much for getting back to me.
    Here are the results of the Analysis Services report:

    I then ran the System Configuration Checker and these are the results:

    Should I assume that I have installed the wrong version? I am running 64 Bit Windows 8.
    I just need the most basic version for personal data analysis in Excel with the Data Mining Add-in.
    Thanks again
