SQL Server DW architecture question

Hi guys,
I was planning the architecture of a SQL Server Datawarehouse project (SQL Server 2014 and Sharepoint 2013) and I was thinking in 3 servers:
1 - SQL Server Database Engine and Integration Services
2 - SQL Server Analysis Services, using tabular models to support Powerpivot and Powerview
3 - SQL Server Reporting Services and  Sharepoint
I want to know from your experience if there is any issue with this approach and to know if it's better to install the database of Reporting Services and Sharepoint:
a) on server 1, creating a specific instance for ReportServer and a specific instance for Sharepoint, or on the same instance as the DW databases. My issue with this is that sharepoint installs so many databases with some kind of hash keys on their name
that is visually annoying
b) on server 3 on the same server of SSRS and Sharepoint
Other approaches are welcome.
Thank you

We're currently in process of implementing datawarehouse project and our configuration is similar to yours. We're using a standalone server for SSAS (Multidimensional) so if its Tabular you might need more memory on the server. We're using a shared reporting
server( which have other report application as well like cognos).
The database/ETL server is same. ETL we're using SSIS 2012 packages with SSIS catalog (project deployment). We also have a Oracle CDC instance running in it to pull deltas from Oracle DB which is one of our sources
As far as current performance goes its not having any issues but we dont have much data now coming.

  • SQL server service accounts question

    We created a test SQL environment using a Technet evaluation copy of Windows Server 2012 along with an evaluation copy of SQL2012. After testing, everything is working as planned so were going to enter the product keys for both Windows Server and SQL 2012.
    My question is that once we have our Server licensed we’re going to start a new domain and recreate all the user accounts but I installed SQL using a local user account I created called ”sqladmin”. Once Server 2012 is the DC in the new domain will I need to
    change all the service accounts for SQL in order for it to function or can I still use the local “sqladmin” user account? If I can re-use that local account are there any downside to that? What’s the best practice in this scenario

    Hi,
    You can use your sqladmin account but that wont be a good security practice. You should always follow principal of least privilege and should run SQL server with domain account having least privilege.Below link will help you in this
    Configure SQL server account and services

  • MVA SQL Server Query Assessment question

    Hi Guys
    I was doing a course on MVA, Querying Microsoft SQL Server Quick Start. This question came up in the assessment:
    True or False: You use the INTERSECT operator to combine results from two SELECT statements. Only rows that appear in both results sets are displayed.
    I answered it as TRUE but it marked it wrong.
    Am I not right??
    Thanks

  • SQL Server Studio Management Question

    Hello,
    I am creating a DB using SQL Server 2005 ( Studio Management )  and I ran a few sql queries. I ran a query and got the following error message:
    Here they are with Code #s:
    Msg 5074, Level 16, State 1, Line 906
    The object 'CK__SavedSear__Remov__5614BF03' is dependent on column 'RemoveFromSyncTime'.
    Msg 4922, Level 16, State 9, Line 906
    ALTER TABLE DROP COLUMN RemoveFromSyncTime failed because one or more objects access this column.
    Executing Release 2.0 Script - Part 4
    Msg 245, Level 16, State 1, Line 37
    Conversion failed when converting the varchar value 'Script cannot be run out of order. Last ID cannot be less than ' to data type int.
    Can anyone help in letting me how to resolve this issue ?
    Thanks

    I've got a similar issue on SQL 2000 DB, see below;
    Server: Msg 5074, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
    The object 'DF__CISDetail__Ccs_O__7917DB30' is dependent on column 'CCS_OP_714_VALID_TO'.
    Server: Msg 4922, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
    ALTER TABLE ALTER COLUMN CCS_OP_714_VALID_TO failed because one or more objects access this column.
    As I've only created the table as a temporary measure to import some external data, I'm going to try removing the constriants applied and then alter the columns I need, I can then re-apply my constraints afterwards.

  • SQL Server Failover Cluster Questions

    Dear All,
                I am building a two-node failover cluster on SQL Server 2012 SP1 (inside Hyper-V as a Guest Cluster) and want clarification on few things that I am facing.
    1.  I am receiving MSDTC Warning.  I can go ahead and create the cluster, but want to understand whether this MSDTC is to be configured as a role on the cluster or not.  I plan to run SCVMM, SCOM, Orchestrator and Windows Azure Pack Databases
    and Reports through it so in such a scenario, do I need MSDTC? If yes, how much should be the size of the MSDTC Drive? Is following process correct?
    http://www.sqlnotebook.info/configure-msdtc-on-windows-cluster-2012/
    2.  During First Node configuration, one needs to provide the "SQL CLUSTER RESEOURCE GROUP NAME".  Does it have any bearing on how it will be accessed by other servers for databases and logs? or is it just how the cluster resource group
    would be named? would it be required for every instance that is created inside the cluster? Just to be clear, so one can name it according to the instance name.
    3.  During the instance creation, one needs to provide "SQL Server Network Name".  As stated above, I plan to run SCVMM, SCOM, Orchestrator and Windows Azure Pack Databases and Reports through it, so would I be required to provide this
    for all instances that I create or this is only required once in the cluster:
    4.  During the instance creation, one needs to provide the features required for installation i.e. instance features and shared features.  As stated above, I plan to run SCVMM, SCOM, Orchestrator and Windows Azure Pack Databases and Reports through
    it, so which features should be selected? so that there is less workload on the server.
    5.  All the instances use TempDB for databases that are present inside it.  What would be the best practice with respect to TempDB.  One TempDB for all instance on the servers on a separate LUN or all instance having their own TempDB LUN?  What
    should be the ideal size of the TempDB LUN?
    6.  Should all the disks required for DBs and Logs be added to Cluster?  Should they be added normal disks or CSV Volumes?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
     1.You can run the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator service (MSDTC) as a clustered resource on a failover cluster server for increased reliability, based on the failover capabilities of the clustered servers. You can
    refer to the MSDTC section of the following blog about determine whether the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MSDTC) cluster resource must be created.
    Reference:http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms189910.aspx#MSDTC
    2. The Cluster Resource Group is where SQL Server failover cluster resource will be placed. Each clustered SQL Server will belong to a Failover
    Cluster Resource Group. For example, if you had configure a two node SQL Server Cluster, each clustered instance on the two node belong to a same Cluster Resource Group.
    You can change the Cluster Resource Group name, but notes the following name is reserved and already used as Resource Group names: Available Storage, Cluster Group.
    3. Each SQL Server cluster is assigned a virtual Network name and IP address, which client applications use to connect to the clustered SQL Server.
    4. Not familiar with SCVMM, SCOM, Orchestrator, but you should install the Database Engine Services and SQL Server Management tools.If you want to use SQL Server Reporting Services, you can install Reporting Servers, but Report Server service cannot participate
    in a failover cluster.
    5. You can use isolated disk for user database and temp DB of each SQL Server Cluster
    6. Yes. You should use Cluster Disks which add to Clustered Shared Volumes to host the data file and log of databases.

I tried again and again by reintalling but AppServer folder remains empty and not able to register. Any help for this issue??????????

  • Can't Create a Data Source - Failed to test connection. [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied

    Hi there,
    I am having a serious issue with The Power BI Data Management Gateway which I am hoping that someone can help me with.
    Basically I am setting a connection between a Power BI demo site and a SQL 2012 Database based on Azure. The Data Management Gateway and is up and running, and Power BI has managed to connect to it successfuly.
    By following the tutorials at
    here I was able to successful create my Data Connection Gateway with a self-signed certificate.
    However, when trying to create the data source I come into problems. The Data Source Manager manages to successfully resolve the hostname, as per the screenshot below:
    Bear in mind that I exposed the require ports in Azure as endpoints and I managed to modify my hosts file on my local machine so I could access the SQL server hosted in Azure using its internal name -- otherwise I would not be able to get this far.
    However the creation of the data source also fails when trying to created it whilst logged in the SQL server in question:
    The Data Source Manager returns the error when using the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server:
    Failed to test connection. [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied
    I tried using the SQL Server Native Client 11.0 instead but I also get an error. This time the error is:
    Failed to test connection. Login timeout expiredA network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. For more information see SQL Server Books Online.Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [53].
    Some considerations
    If I provide an invalid username/password, the Data Source Manager does say that the username and password is incorrect.
    Firewall is turned off in the SQL Server (either way, this error also happens if I try top use the Data Source Manager whilst logged in the SQL Server itself).
    SQL Profiler does not show any attempt of connection.
    The SQL server instance in question is the default one.
    The error happens regardless if I select the option to encrypt connection or not.
    In SQL Configuration manager I can see that all protocols are enabled (TCP/IP, Named Pipes and Shared Memory.
    The Event Viewer does not provide any further errors than the one I have copied in this post.
    I'm at a loss here. Could someone please advise what might I be doing wrong?
    Regards,
    P.

    Here is what I had to do to solve this issue:
    Basically I had to add the MSSQL TCP/IP port as an end-point in Azure. After I did that, then I was able to create the data-source. However, I was only able to authenticate with a SQL account, as any domain account would return me an error saying that the
    domain isn't trusted.
    What puzzles me here is how come the Data Source Manager would inform me that an account username/password was invalid, but it would fail/timeout if I provided valid credentials (!?!?!!?)

  • Is it possible to make connection for the VC application the SQL Server

    hi
    I have requirement like, We have some data available in SQL server as central repositoty. My client want to make the Anylatics application like showing graphs in VC based on the data available in SQL server.
    My question. Is there any possiblity to make the connection the sql server by creating some system object using some JDBC connection Like that.
    What is the possibility.
    can u any body tell what is the work around need to be for this requirement. Whether it is possible or not.
    Regards
    vijay

    Hi Vijay,
    In your other thread, I have given the link to the following doc which will help you to in configuring the JDBC Connector.
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/library/uuid/b00917dc-ead4-2910-3ebb-b0a63e49ef10
    That was the first step.
    In the second step, you need to create a JDBC System in the portal. Go through the following doc which explains how to create BI JDBC system for VC. All you need to change is that on Page 10, choose JDBC system instead of BI JDBC system, and do the necessary configurations.
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/6209b52e-0401-0010-6a9f-d40ec3a09424
    As rightly said by Marcel, you can use stored procedures as well as SQL statements. As far as stored procedures are concerned, all you need to do is go to Enterprise Manager, and create procedures in your database in the same way by which you create new tables and users (Refer my article). Then you can use these procedures in your Visual Composer provided you have properly created the JDBC system in portal properly.
    Also have a look at the following doc:
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/6339e7d4-0a01-0010-1c98-db00e52e989a

  • Oracle dblink to sql server, accessing multiple database on same sql server under one dblink

    Hi, we have successfully managed to set up an Oracle dblink over to sql server and retrieve data.
    The sql server user were using via the dblink has access to more than one database on the same sql server
    But the question is how in oracle (if at all possible) do you prefix the sql statement to access this ?
    Eg:
    Sqlserver_prod has user sqlserver_user which appears to be set up as default database on sqlserver_db1
    But we have select access to sqlserver_db2
    all work fine as sqlserver_user
    select * from  table_fromdb1
    select * from  dbo.table_fromdb1
    select * from  sqlserver_db1.dbo.table_fromdb1
    as does
    select * from  sqlserver_db2.dbo.table_fromdb2
    over in Oracle
    Oracle_db has dblink sqlserver_prod.world connecting as sqlserver_user
    all working fine
    select * from "table_fromdb1"@sqlserver_prod
    select * from "dbo"."table_fromdb1"@sqlserver_prod
    but how (if at all possible) do I access from oracle
    sqlserver_db2.dbo.table_fromdb2
    without having to create a new sqlserver_db2_user referenced in a new dblink
    if oracle to oracle would be
    select * from remote_oracle_schema.table@remote_oracle_db

    Hi, ok cheers, I see, original gateway was connecting purely at host_name level
    HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO=sqlserver_host
    Planning to amend this to be
    HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO=sqlserver_host//sqlserver_db1
    With exisiting dblink
    And to create new gateway
    HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO=sqlserver_host//sqlserver_db2
    With new exisitng dblink,will see how we get on
    Cheers again

  • Store&read chinese characters in MS SQL server 2000 using Java

    Hi,
    I have a problem to store Chinese characters in MS SQL Server 2000, storing question marks(??????) instead of Chinese characters
    I am using JSF framework, SUN APPLICATION Server 9.1 , MS SQL Server 2000 server and Microsoft data source driver class (com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDataSource) to connect db.
    I have one solution:
    IN JSP:
    <%@page contentType="text/html"%>
    <%@page pageEncoding="UTF-8"%>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">
    and
    In database column type should “nvarchar” in place of varchar
    while inserting or updating the same need to add ‘N’ prefix with the value like insert into client(Name, Id ….) values (N+)
    the above is working fine but the problem is here i have already defined database with 100s of tables I cant change database tables as well as queries
    Thanks,
    Sathi

    I don't know any betterer option, than to copy the database tabels redefining the Chinese data fields as nvarchar.
    To be frank I had also problems writing to a html file Chinese text stored in MS SQLServer 2000 nvarchar fields.
    The following worked:'
         public String getEncodedData(ResultSet resultSet, int columnIndex, String charset)
         throws SQLException
              //final String methodName = "getEncodedData";
              InputStream binaryStream =resultSet.getBinaryStream(columnIndex);
              String readStringFromStream=readStringFromStream(binaryStream, charset);//UTF_16LE);
              return readStringFromStream;
         public String readStringFromStream(InputStream inputStream, String charset) {
              final String methodName = "readStringFromStream";
              StringBuffer buffer = new StringBuffer();
              try {
                   int ch;
                   InputStreamReader isr = new InputStreamReader(inputStream, charset);
                   Reader in = new BufferedReader(isr);
                   while ((ch = in.read()) > -1) {
                        buffer.append((char)ch);
                   in.close();
                   return buffer.toString();
              } catch (IOException exception) {
                   Log.printError(this,methodName, exception);
                   return null;
         }And writing it to file:
         public void writeEncodedStringToFile(String text, String filePath, String charset, boolean append){
              final String methodName = "writeEncodedStringToFile";
              OutputStreamWriter writer= null;
              try {
                   FileOutputStream fileOutputStream = new FileOutputStream(filePath, append);
                   writer = new OutputStreamWriter(fileOutputStream, charset);
                   writer.write(text);
              } catch (IOException exception) {

    I have a suite of 130 JUnit tests. Recently, they started to give me intermittent "error establishing socket" errors when trying to connect to a local instance of SQL Server 2000 via JDBC.
    Each test creates one or more connections. I've used wrappers to prove that I'm closing all of the connections, statements, prepared statements and result sets. The first 70 or 80 tests succeed. After that every test gets the "error establishing socket" exception. Sometimes (but not always) SQL Server continues to refuse connections when I re-run the suite. When that happens I have to let it sit for 30 seconds or so (or restart the server) before it will accept connections.
    I've tested this with both Microsoft's and WebLogic's JDBC drivers with the same results. There's nothing in the SQL Server logs when this happens. There's nothing in the Windows event logs, either.
    If I sleep for 5 seconds between each test the problem goes away.
    I installed the latest service pack (SP3a) for SQL Server 2000 with no change in behavior.
    All of this leads me to believe that something is wrong with SQL Server. Has anyone else run into this problem? Any ideas?

    I am not overly familiar with the SQL Server network architecture, but there are scenarios that could explain your intermittent failures.
    When you connect to a database one of two things can happen, you can start your own process on the server that acts as communication to from the server locally, or you are put in a queue for a static (shared) process that does the same thing.
    Assuming that most databases are initially setup with singular processes per connection, and you have established a connection then you disconnect from the database you do not automatically or instantly kill your process running on the server. There are two primary reasons for this as far as I know. First, the database puts more priority on doing something then doing nothing. Cleaning up and removing your process would be considered doing nothing, accepting incoming connections would be considered doing something. Second, the process may have to stay around to ensure all commit or rollback is completed properly (not always true in every database).
    So, I would expect that there is a connection limit (perhaps between 50-80) that you are exceeding because you are firing these connections rapidly and even though you close the connection in your remote program, the database simply doesn't keep up. Most databases will "cleanup" reasonably quickly if they have the resources to do so, so if you were to put a 30 second delay between every connection it would probably work just fine. It would probably work fine if you put a 30 second delay between after every 20 connections too. It's a bit of balancing act.
    There would be a couple of ways to alleviate this constraint. Putting in delays can demonstrate that this is in fact a work load problem (constrained by total count of connections), but doesn't really help in production instances. You can change the maximum number of connections allowed by the database, however this threshold may be caused by hardware resource (memory) limitations as much as it is a parameter in the database. You may have to add memory to accommodate this many connections. You may have to constrain how much memory each connection gets (again controlled by database parameters). You may have to accept this as a resource constraint and write your code accordingly. This often manifests itself by taking advantage of transaction managers (or transaction manager logic) that will queue up requests until database resources are available.
    Again, I'm not a SQL Server expert, but I'm reasonably certain that most of what I said applies if not specifically at least generally.
    Good Luck.

  • Sql Server max server memory

     Hi,
     I know that , max server memory property is about physical memory limit for  buffer pool. But some says that, it is about Vas (virtual adress space) limit for buffer pool. I know that , Vas structure includes
    physical memory and virtual memory. Then it means that max server memory is not equal max
    physical memory for buffer pool.
    Which one is true?

    Both are true depending on the memory model your SQL Server is using
    In conventional memory model. Max server memory is about memory limit for Bpool ( Bpool can be from RAM or Page file), so there is no guarantee that bpool will always be placed in physical memory it can be paged to page file when there is memory pressure.
    In Lock pages and large pages memory model Bpool cant be paged and always placed in RAM so its limit for BPOOL in RAM
    I assume you are referring  Page file as virtual memory and RAM as
    physical memory
