  • SQL Server Express 2014 CTP2 LocalDB

I just installed 2014 SQL Express and everything looked like it worked just fine.
Too fine for my own good because it updated the database files to version 782 and now I am stuck.
I cannot get SQL Server Management Studio nor VS 2013 Express to connect to LocalDB v12.0, only to LocalDB v11.0, but the latter does not read version 782 data base files.
The Discovery Report shows that LocalDB v.12 has been configured. But when I try to connect with "(LocalDB)\v12.0" I get "Cannot connect..." It can still connect with "(LocalDB)\v11.0" but than cannot open the v.782
    data bases.
And when I try to open  an SQLexpress database in VS 2013 Express it comes back with "An incompatible SQL Server version was detected."

    Hello ,
Do you know these links ?
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh510202(v=sql.120).aspx
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/4609.troubleshoot-sql-server-2012-express-localdb.aspx
You may have problems with access permissions on the files of the database ( see at the end of the 2nd link ). The user must be added to the list of authorized users to connect and so on.
There was also a similar problem of connection for applications created with VS 2010 towards localdb 2012.
See also the articles from the SQL Server Express Weblog ( for 2012 but the remarks could be always interesting )

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlexpress/archive/2011/10/27/net-framework-4-now-supports-localdb.aspx
Please , could you explain how you have created your localdb on the users computers ?
I am surprised by your short error message ( I think that you have not provided the full error message ).
    Have a nice day
PS : as you are using a SQL Server Express 2014 CTP2 , it is possible that the RTM version could solve your problem. I have applied always a rule : I never install an application using a new version of SQL Server before the release of the SP1.

  • Speed of SQL server web edition is slow then express edition

    Hello,
I have query regarding performance difference between SQL server express edition and web edition.
There two server with same configuration (8 GB Ram, 4 core, hard disk has about 90 GB free memory), both server has only SQL server not any other software or programs which affect the performance.
    Software version as below:
    Server1: Windows server 2012 R2 & Microsoft SQL Server 2014 - 12.0.2430.0 (X64) web edition
    Server2: Windows server 2008 R2 & Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (SP2) - 10.50.4000. 0 (X64) express edition
I have restore one database backup on both servers (So on both server database with same records) and executed some queries on both the servers, Result bit surprising because express edition is always faster than web edition.
Then I have do following things but still result is same:
    Rebuild indexes
    Make max memory allocation same
Please provide me suggestion to improve speed of Microsoft SQL Server 2014 - 12.0.2430.0 (X64) web edition
    Thank in advance.

So exactly the same plan for both. What does Profiler say? Same amount of I/O, CPU? If so, next step would be to eliminate the network and other paths out from the machine. If it is a SELECT, then you can add INTO into a temp table and see if you get the
same performance. If so, you know the issue is with the data leaving your SQL Server ang getting to the client - those aspects.

  • SQL Server Express with SS Management Studio. Which version is lightest/smallest?

I’m looking to download the smallest/lightest version of SQL Server Express with SS Management Studio.
    Which option should I choose?

Knowledge is the only thing that I can give you, and still retain, and we are both better off for it.

    Hello,
What's the main propuse you use SQL Server Express edition? If you just use SQL Server in development. You can try to use SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB.
LocalDB is a lightweight version of Express that has all its programmability features.SQL Server Express LocalDB runs in user mode, and you can install it more quickly with fewer prerequisites (a minimal set of files necessary to start the SQL Server Database
    Engine) and no configuration.

  • SQL Server Express - Size limitations

    Hi,
I am currently using the SQL Server Express edition with the intention of upgrading to the full version in the future.
I know the size limitation on the Database is 4GB - however does this include the log file as well? Nothing I read says the log file is included however if anyone can give the definitive answer I would be grateful.
Also my log file maximum is set to 2GB what issues are there with reducing this to say 500MB? I assume SQL Server automatically drops the old log data to add new data when the maximum is reached.
    Thanks for your help.
    Andrew

The 4GB limit only applies to data files, not log.
The maxsize for your log files should only be relevant if something in your workload is going to require more then the size so that the log will have to grow.  Ideally, your log is appropriately sized for your workload so that autogrow will not
    need to occur.

  • SQL Server Express Remote Connection is an Official Function or Not

There are lots of guide on internet about this topic or in the forum.
And I have already tested SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Remote Connection successfully, for usage of an application server.
But I am not sure about this function is Ok or not for production environment, as someone said Remote Connection with SQL Express is not an official function and not supported by Microsoft. Is it true?
Is there some white paper or official function spec about SQL Express to clarify it?

Sure it's an official function of the SQL Server Express Edition.
By default it's only disabled by security reasons, because in common the Express Edition is used for smaller applications running on one machine.

  • Can SQL Server Express Send Emails?

I am fiddling around with one of my SQL Server Express instances, and I'm trying to get it to send me an email.  I just read these links.
    http://execsql.org/configure-send-database-email-sql-server-2012-express-edition
    http://www.databasejournal.com/features/mssql/article.php/3626056/Database-Mail-in-SQL-Server-2005.htm
I followed all the steps there, and now, as I'm trying to send myself an email, I get this message.
The mail could not be sent to the recipients because of the mail server failure. Exception Message: Could not connect to mail server.
    When I run this:
    SELECT * FROM msdb.dbo.sysmail_event_log;
    I see this:
    description
The mail could not be sent to the recipients because of the mail server failure. (Sending Mail using Account 1 (2015-01-21T14:25:36). Exception Message: Could not connect to mail server. (The requested name is valid, but no data of the requested type was found).
Any idea what's wrong?  Can SQL Server Express even send emails???

  • Can SQL Server Express Send an Email When an SProc Finishes?

I looked online for an answer to this; I didn't find anything definitive.  I'm wondering if I can get my SQL Server Express to send an email as soon as an SProc runs.  I know a more robust version of SQL Server can do it, but I don't know if the
express version can do it.  If it can be done, can you please show me how to set it up, step by step.
    Thanks everyone!!
Knowledge is the only thing that I can give you, and still retain, and we are both better off for it.

if I can get my SQL Server Express to send an email as soon as an SProc runs.  I
The SQL Server Express Edition don't support Database E-Mail feature; see
Features Supported by the Editions of SQL Server 2012; so you can't send an e-mail.

  • How many sql server express instances i can install maximum in single system

    Hello Team,
I want to install multiple sql express instances in single machine. My question is that how many instances of sql server express editions i can install in single machine ?
    Thanks,
    Udaya Kumar
    udaya kumar

For practical reasons as much as you like you probably would not exceed in any case 10 instances because after that resource crunch would start but any how you can read Max specification for SQL Server
More accurate answer is "50 instances on a stand-alone server for all SQL Server editions."

  • Install MS SQL Server Web Edition on a server with MS SQL Server Express

    Hi,
We have a VPS cloud server on which there is an instance of SQL Server Express.
Since we need more resources, I consulted with the hosting provider and they offered us to use SQL Server Web Edition (SPLA Lisence).
My question is - the hosting company claims that it is not possible to keep the SQL Server Express instance along side with the  SQL Server Web Edition, and that we must do ugrade and remove the  SQL Server Express instance.
This will cause us a long downtime, since there are multiple DBs on the SQL Server Express that we will have to backup, and then restore them one by one on the Web Edition after it is installed.
Is this correct? Can't we install the SQL Server Web Edition Instance and gradually move the DBs to it?
    Thanks!

The 50 instances per machine is a setup check rule as opposed to a hardware limitation.  From this perspective, there would be no difference between a VM or a physical server.
In the line from the documentation that you referenced, the "stand-alone server" refers not to VM vs. Physical, but instead a stand-alone instance vs. a clustered instance.  That is, in a non-clustered environment, you can have up to 50 instances.
In the past when I helped with setup testing and automation, we'd run VMs with 20-ish instances, including instances from 2012, 2008 R2, 2008, and 2005, including multiple editions (Enterprise, Standard, Express, Web, etc.).
One other potential option if your provider cannot support multiple instances is to do an in-place upgrade (edition upgrade) of your existing Express instance.  This would retain the current instance and upgrade the existing instance from Express
to Web without the need to migrate databases.  Here is more info on the supported version and edition upgrade paths (including Express to Web):

  • SQL Server Express 2014 on Win8.1: Could not find the Database Engine startup handle

    Hello,
I tried to follow all the similarly titled posts in this forum, yet no solution seems to work, so I hope I can find some up-to-date suggestion here (most of the older posts refer to versions from 2008 to 2012...).
I have installed Visual Studio 2013 (with the latest Update 2 RC) on a freshly installed development workstation with Win 8.1 with all its updates. Now I'd want to install SQL Server 2014 Express, but the setup keeps failing with the dreaded "Could
not find the Database Engine startup handle" error (the log follows below).
    What I tried:
    1) download again and repair. Same error.
    2) completely uninstall by launching setup.exe /Action=uninstall (success), then rebooting the OS, then installing again. Same error. I did this twice, the second time I also manually removed any directory left out in C:\Program Files etc.
When I launch the setup, I select all the components for installation in the package SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe (1.12 GB, last downloaded today -Apr 3, 2014-), and accept all the defaults including the proposed services accounts. There is no preexisting
    SQL Server instance, as expected.
The setup takes its time, and finally fails with the error quoted above. I really do not want to reformat my HD and fully reconfigure my workstation, which took about 3 days... Could anyone suggest a solution to have SQL Server 2014 setup so I can start
developing instead of wasting time in administering the system?
Thanks to all! The log follows.

Thank you, it worked! I suppose that it was really your nr.3 which made the difference. I changed NT Service\MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS to NT AUTHORITY\System for the Data service. I'll then change it again as suggested (any suggestion about a "standard"
account to be used here?), even if this is a development workstation using SQL Server Express only as a local database for debugging, so security is not really a big concern.
Thanks for the feedback.Ya I know No3 was real step but just added more info so as to rule out any other possibility.
No not as such, you wont believe, quite few pf my clients I have worked for keep it with local system and they have not complained yet ,they are afraid to change account as few of them faced issue SQL Server not coming online due to logon failure( after changing
startup account to some domain a and that was happening due to some AD policy. But if you have nay plans to move Critical database in production which would be act as Database to some Internet facing application please follow my suggestion
of running SQL Server with Least privileged domain account.
