SQL - VMM Cluster Configuration Understanding

Dear All,
I am building a two-node failover cluster on SQL Server 2012 SP1 (inside Hyper-V as a Guest Cluster) and want clarification on few things that I am facing.
1.  I am receiving MSDTC Warning.  I can go ahead and create the cluster, but want to understand whether this MSDTC is to be configured as a role on the cluster or not.  I plan to run SCVMM, SCOM, Orchestrator and Windows Azure Pack Databases
and Reports through it so in such a scenario, do I need MSDTC? If yes, how much should be the size of the MSDTC Drive? Is following process correct?
http://www.sqlnotebook.info/configure-msdtc-on-windows-cluster-2012/
2.  During First Node configuration, one needs to provide the "SQL CLUSTER RESEOURCE GROUP NAME".  Does it have any bearing on how it will be accessed by other servers for databases and logs? or is it just how the cluster resource group
would be named? would it be required for every instance that is created inside the cluster? Just to be clear, so one can name it according to the instance name.
3.  During the instance creation, one needs to provide "SQL Server Network Name".  As stated above, I plan to run SCVMM, SCOM, Orchestrator and Windows Azure Pack Databases and Reports through it, so would I be required to provide this
for all instances that I create or this is only required once in the cluster:
4.  During the instance creation, one needs to provide the features required for installation i.e. instance features and shared features.  As stated above, I plan to run SCVMM, SCOM, Orchestrator and Windows Azure Pack Databases and Reports through
it, so which features should be selected? so that there is less workload on the server.
5.  All the instances use TempDB for databases that are present inside it.  What would be the best practice with respect to TempDB.  One TempDB for all instance on the servers on a separate LUN or all instance having their own TempDB LUN?  What
should be the ideal size of the TempDB LUN?
6.  Should all the disks required for DBs and Logs be added to Cluster?  Should they be added normal disks or CSV Volumes?
Thanks in advance.

Reminder.

    1. It is not required if you only install Data engine and SSRS. If you want to install SSIS, you need to configure it.
    2. It is the disk where SQL Server virtual server resources will be located.
    3. This is the name that is used to identify your failover cluster on the network.
    4. See the link below. The other System Center products require the same features.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg682077.aspx#BKMK_SupConfigSQLSrvReq
    5. Follow Microsoft best practice when architecting your SQL Server. For this particular issue, the query in question places a large burden on TempDB I/O. For my customer, we increased TempDB files from 1 to 16 files to match the number of processor cores.
    6. Yes, they are all required to be added to cluster.
Anyway, we do not recommend you install all the databases in a same clustered SQL Server.

  • Requirements for a HA VMM Cluster

Here is my situation.  I want to setup a HA VMM 2012 R2 Environment as outlined in this article:  http://blogs.technet.com/b/scvmm/archive/2014/07/03/setting-up-a-highly-available-vmm-2012-environment.aspx
I have run into a couple of snags and I am having a hard time figuring out what exactly the best way to proceed is.  I have an existing VMM Server (VMMA) that was setup before I started at my company (by a Microsoft person during the initial System
Center installation engagement) and nobody knows anything about it.  I have figured out that it is already setup to store Keys in Active Directory.  However, it is only using a single installation of a SQL Server (not a clustered SQL Server).
I have added a second VMM Server (VMMB) but during the installation I don't get any option to add or configure a cluster name.
    Here are my questions:
Is it possible that this single installation of a VMM Server is already setup as a "Cluster"?  If so, how can I find the Cluster Name?  I have searched DNS for anything I can think it might be and haven't found anything.
Will I only be able to name/create a VMM Cluster if I am using a SQL Cluster to store my VMM DB?
Is it a requirement to have the VMM SQL DB Cluster on a separate Hyper-V Cluster from the VMM Cluster or simply a "best practice"?
Is it possible to create a VMM Cluster after the initial installation of VMM was not configured that way?
    MCITP | VCP4 | VCP5

    Hi,
    my respond:-
    1. You can check by using Failover Cluster manager console. Besides during VMM installation, when you add 2nd node, it will prompt to add this 2nd server as a node to
    the highly available VMM installation.
    2. Not really. You can have
    a) VMM Cluster with standalone SQL
    b) VMM Cluster with SQL cluster
    3. It is best to only install Hyper-v roles and do not install other roles. You can create VM to host the SQL
    4. Nope. You must select during installation (after setup cluster). The url that you provide has the screenshot that
will ask "Do you want to install management server into cluster".

  • Live migration to HA failed leaving VHD on local storage and VM in cluster = Unsupported Cluster Configuration

    Hi all
Fun one here, I've been moving non-HA VMs to a HA and everything has been working perfectly until now.  All this is being performed on Hyper-V 2012R2, Windows Server 2012R2 and VMM 2012R2.
For some reason on the VMs failed the migration with an error 10608 "Cannot create or update a highly available virtual machine because Virtual Machine Manager could not locate or access Drive:\Folder"  The odd thing is the drive\folder is
a local storage one and I selected a CSV in the migration wizard.
The net result is that the VM is half configured into the cluster but the VHD is still on local storage.  Hence the "unsupported cluster configuration" error.
The question is how do I roll back? I either need to get the VM out of the cluster and back into a non-HA state or move the VHD onto the CSV.  Not sure if the latter is really a option.
I've foolishly clicked "Ignore" on the repair so now I can't use the "undo" option (brain fade moment on my part).
Any help gratefully received as I'm a bit stuck with this.
    Thanks
    Rob

    Hi Simar
Thanks for the advice, I've now got the VM back in a stable state and running HA.
Just to finish off the thread for future I did the following
    - Shutdown the VM
    - Remove the VM from the Failover Cluster Manager (as you say this did leave the VM configuration intact)
    - I was unable to import the VM as per your instructions so I copied the VHD to another folder on the local storage and took a note of the VM configuration.
    - Deleted the VM from VMM so this removed all the configuration details/old VHD.
    - Built a new VM using the details I saved from the point above
    - Copied the VHD into the new VMs folder and attached it to the VM.
    - Started it up and reconfigured networking
    - Use VMM to make the VM HA.
I believe I have found the reason for the initial error, it appears there was a empty folder in the Snapshot folder, probably from an old Checkpoint that hadn't cleaned up properly when it was deleted.
The system is up and running now so thanks again for the advice.

  • Problem accessing sql server cluster node

Simple two node cluster configuration with SQL server 2014 and Windows Server 2012.  When node 2 is active, remote client access to SQL server works fine through SQL Management Studio.  However, when node 1 is active, remote client access will
not work.  Node 1 was installed first, and node 2 was the added node when SQL server was installed.  All other settings have been confirmed to be the same.  Anyone have any ideas????
    TIA

    Hi TIA,
Did you try to disable all the node firewall and try again, any error information you got when it fail connect to SQL cluster?

  • Hyper-V Failover Cluster Configuration Confirmation

    Dear All,
I have created a Hyper-V Failover Cluster and I want you to confirm if the configuration I have done is okay and I have not missed
out anything that is mandatory for a Hyper-V Failover Cluster to work.  My configuration is below:
    1. Presented Disks to servers, formatted and taken offline
    2. Installed necessary features, such as failover clustering
    3. Configured NIC Teaming
    4. Created cluster, not adding storage at the time of creation
     - Added disks to the cluster
     - Added disks as CSV
     - Renamed disks to represent respective CSV volumes
     - Assigning each node a CSV volume
     - Configured quorum automatically which configured the disk witness
     - There were two networks so renamed them to Management and Cluster Communication
     - Exposed Management Network to Cluster and Clients
     - Exposed Cluster Communication Network to Cluster only
    5. Installed Hyper-V
     - Changed Virtual Disks, Configuration and Snapshots Location
     - Assigned one CSV volume to each node
     - Configured External switch with allow management option checked
    1. For minimum configuration, is this enough?
    2. If I create a virtual machine and make it highly available from hyper-v console, would it be highly available and would live
    migrate, etc.?
    3. Are there any configuration changes required?
    4. Please, suggest how it can be made better?
    Thanks in advan

    Hi ,
Please refer to following steps to build a hyper-v failover cluster :
Step 1: Connect both physical computers to the networks and storage
Step 2: Install Hyper-V and Failover Clustering on both physical computers
Step 3: Create a virtual switch
Step 4: Validate the cluster configuration
    Step 5: Create the cluster
Step 6: Add a disk as CSV to store virtual machine data
Step 7: Create a highly available virtual machine
Step 8: Install the guest operating system on the virtual machine
Step 9: Test a planned failover
Step 10: Test an unplanned failover
Step 11: Modify the settings of a virtual machine
Step 12: Remove a virtual machine from a cluster
For details please refer to following link:

  • How is the impact when a sql server cluster instance failover to a downlevel version node?

    Hi,
I have a one instance two nodes sql 2012 cluster, node1's sql 2012 version is 11.0.5522, node2's sql 2012 version is 11.0.3000, node1 is active.
When sql server failover from node1 to node2, it succeed. I want to konw if this downlevel failover  impact database (data or usage)?
    Many thanks.

I would not say this as a correct configuration although you can do it. Downside is suppose node 1 which is on higer version has some bug fixed with patch when you failover to lower version that bug might re surface. I have never used nodes with different
    version nor i recommend.

  • Virtualised Multi-Instance SQL Server Cluster - Processor Resource Management

Hi - We're in the process of implementing a multi-instance SQL 2014 guest cluster on Windows 2012 R2.  To our dismay, it seems that Windows System Resource Manager (WSRM) is deprecated in Windows 2012 R2, so we're now stuck for how best to manage CPU usage
    between SQL instances....
As far as I can see, I'm left with two options, but both of these have problems:
    1) Use SQL Processor affinity within the guest cluster, with each SQL instance assigned to dedicated v-CPU.  However, I'm not certain that setting SQL Processor affinity within a VM will actually have the desired affect!?..
    - When there is physical CPU capacity available, I'd hope Hyper-V would provide it to whichever v-CPU is demanding it.
    - When VM processor demand exceeds the physical CPU capacity, I'd hope the SQL instances would receive a proportion of the physical CPU time according to the number of v-CPU(s) assigned through the affinity settings.
    2) Use a VM (actually 2, because its a 2-node guest cluster) per SQL instance!..  This is not ideal, as we need multiple SQL instances and it would result in have an administrative and performance overhead
Does anyone have any information or thoughts on this?  How can we manage a virtualised multi-instance SQL deployment now that WSRM has been deprecated?  Help me please!

I'm not sure what are the requirements for each of the 2 VMs in in the SQL guest cluster.
I'm assuming the guest cluster resides on a Hyper-V CSV with at least 2 Hyper-V hosts, and the 2 VMs are configured with Anti-affinity to ensure they never reside on the same Hyper-V host.
I've been able to configure CPU resources to VMs from the standard controls in Hyper-V Manager:

No its not possible to convert standalone installation to cluster. Moreover first you need to configure Windows cluster then backup all SQL server databases logins jobs packages and install fresh instance of SQL Server in cluster aware mode

  • "Unsupported Cluster Configuration" status for all VM's in SCVMM 2012 R2

I have multiple Hyper-V 2012 R2 clusters that are managed via SCVMM 2012 R2. I want to make all the VM's highly available, but I receive the following errors.
VM status - Unsupported Cluster Configuration
error 13923 - highly available virtual machine is not supported by VMM because its cluster resource group is not configured correctly.
error 13706 - the host network adapter is not associated with any logical networks
I have 2 10Gb NICS teamed on all the Hyper-V Hosts. Then I create virtual switches and virtual NICS in Hyper -V. I then create separate VLANS for each virtual NIC to segment traffic for clustering, live migration, etc.
I found the following article, but it seems to just show how to identify the issue, not resolve it.

I have tried from so many forms. This is so frustrating. Thank for everyone/anyone who wants to help. So this is what happened: I had to uninstall my previous sqlserver 2012(which worked great) for some reason, and I uninstalled everything from that download.
Then I installed the trial edition of sql server 2012 (64 Bit) and It wouldn't connect to the database. (Error mentioned above.) My local DB is COWBOYS. (COWBOYS is also my computer name.) After this, I have tried downloading sqlexpress and sqlserver 64bit
many times and cannot connect to my local DB.
How do I connect to my Local DB?
Also, I think this might help: (When I run sqlserve.exe, which I was able to find in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\LocalDB\Binn, I get an error: Your SQL server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with(Error getting
instance ID from name). Please uninstall then re-run setup to correct this problem.
I would happily re install it, if it wasn't my 20th time.
I don't have any remote connections, I don't use username/password, only window authentication. I work mostly on visual studio, but without able to store /retrieve data, I don't know how to survive.
May be the solution is very simple, but I am too frustrated.
Some of the things I have tried:
From a command prompt, enter one of the following commands:
net start "SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER)" OR
net start "SQL Server Agent(instancename)"(for instance)
on my sql configuration, I cannot start anything because there is nothing there to start. I can post more details, if that would help. Also, some more details about the error:

Any one that can help me, I will be greatful. Thank you so much. p.s. please ask me anything if you have any questions.

It sounds like there are a couple things going on here.  First check if you have a successful install of SQL Server, then we'll figure out the connection issues.
Can you launch SQL Server Configuration Manager and check for SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) if default instance or SQL Server (other name) if you've configured your instance as a named instance.  Once you find this, make sure the service is started.
If not started, try to start it and see if it throws an error.  If you get an error, post the error message your hitting.  If the service starts, you can then launch SSMS and try to connect.  If you have a default instance, you can use the machine
name in the connection dialog.  Ex:  "COWBOYS" where Cowboys is the machine name.  However, if you named the SQL Server instance during install, you'll need to connect using the machine\instance format.  Ex:  COWBOYS\Romo (where Romo
is the instance name you set during install).
You can also look at the summary.txt file in the SQL Server setup error logs to see what happened on the most recent install.  Past install history is archived in the log folder if you need to dig those up to help troubleshoot, but the most
recent one may help get to the bottom of it if there is an issue with setup detecting a prior instance that needs to be repaired.
