Sqlplus scripts on unix hanging

First of all, I have no clue what iSql-plus is. My question is about sql-plus, but there's no dicussion forum for that. Anyways!
I have some unix scripts that trigger pl-sql programs using the following command....
sqlplus myName/myPasswd@myDb myscript.sql
'myscript.sql' is a pl-sql script that contains an 'exit;' statement at the end to close the sqlplus session. the unix script then does some other things afterwards.
Problem: if something goes funny somewhere on our server that causes sql-plus to be unable to connect to the database (eg listener problems, reboot, etc.), sqlplus simply prompts the std-out to try again. My 'exit;' command never runs, so the session hangs. This works when you're logging in as an interactive user, but as a batch script it causes things to totally hang. I need a way to trap the error so that i can handle it. I'd like a good sol'n - not something silly like running it in the background or putting a timer in the script.
Anyone have any ideas? I can't see any command line paramaters that might do this.

iSQL*Plus is the web enabled interface to SQL*Plus. There is a simple 8.1.7 Beta version available for download from OTN. The first production version (which is much improved from the 8.1.7 Beta) will be available with Oracle9i on Windows.
There are various tricks to checking that a database is running. You can use the operating system return code from SQL*Plus to check that a database is it.
Create a script test.sql containing three EXIT commands:
exit
exit
exit
On UNIX in Bourne or K shell:
$ sqlplus scott/tiger < test.sql > /dev/null 2>&1
$ echo $?

  • Call unix command in sqlplus script

    Hello, I wanna to know how to call a unix command in the sqlplus script.
    For exemple,
    I've a sqlplus script to lauch a oracle report, after the report is generated, I wanne to replace the output file in an other directory.
    So that, I have to call the unix command mv here in the sqlplus script
    How can I do it?**
    I completed my situation:
    I don't have dbms_scheduler untility in my database.
    Thanks a lot for your help

    Yes, at the begining, I'll tried the unix shell by calling SQL.
    I've the problem of passing the parameters through.
    It seems to me
    we can use
    Host in the SQLPLUS to run the unix command.
    but I've written it in my sqlplus script, it doesn't work. so I wanna to find an exemple how to use HOST in sqlplus script?
    I would have loved to give you an example..but its not unix on my laptop.
    But what i can tell you is...u should be doing otherway round.
    Not calling Unix commands from SQL but calling SQL's form unix.
    You got shell scripts for that.
    Write a shell script. Login to SQL execute your code.
    exit from sql and then move your file with MV. That's it.
    Do post how far you get after trying this.

  • Sqlplus call in unix script

    Can someone point me to a site where I can get some documentation or good information on the proper way of making a sqlplus call in unix (korn) shell script? I want to know the proper format as well as the right parameters when calling sqlplus. I would like to be able to run a sql statement or call a pl/sql procedure. I've searched the internet and found some information. However, the information are mostly example-type info and not really a well-organized documentation. Would appreciate any help.

    This is the forum for the SQL Developer tool, you should ask questions like this in the SQL and PL/SQL forum or the Database - General forum.
    Having said that, calling sqlplus is just like calling any other command. You should read the SQL*Plus manual which details all the command line parameters and options.

  • Getting return value from sqlplus script while running a unix job

    I am trying to run a unix script that calls sqlplus. The following code outlines the unix/sql code that I trying to execute:
    return_count=`sqlplus $ORACLE_ID/$ORACLE_PWD@$ORACLE_SID <<EOF | grep '^RETURN_VAL' | sed 's/^RETURN_VAL//'
    SET SERVEROUTPUT ON
    VARIABLE ReturnValue NUMBER
    EXEC :ReturnValue := 1
    BEGIN
    UPDATE seq_control_nbr
    SET table_seq_nbr = table_seq_nbr + 1,
    last_updt_dttmstp = systimestamp,
    last_updt_user_id = 'ECVMSONS'
    WHERE table_key = 'ONSTAR';
    IF SQL%ROWCOUNT = 1 THEN
    COMMIT;
    :ReturnValue := 0;
    ELSE
    ROLLBACK;
    :ReturnValue := 99;
    END IF;
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE ('RETURN_VAL '||:ReturnValue);
    END;
    EXIT
    EOF`
    The above outlined sqlplus script does run because the values on the table are updated. However, I cannot get the value of ReturnValue to be displayed, so it can be returned to the unix script.
    Any ideas?

    ok do the following:-
    return_count=`sqlplus $ORACLE_ID/$ORACLE_PWD@$ORACLE_SID <<EOF

  • Sql script in UNIX

    When I run a sql script in unix using sqlplus command, the process halts at some point. No matter how long I wait, it does not finish (it does not bring the command prompt back). There are no problems in SQL*PLUS. This process usually takes about 30 mins when I run from SQL * PLUS. Any ideas why it hangs in UNIX?

  • Passing variables from shell script to separate sqlplus script

    Hi, I am having issues passing variables to a separate sqlplus script invoked by the shell script, e.g.
    #!/bin/sh

    PWD1=PA55W0rd
    echo exit | sqlplus / as sysdba @${DB_NAME}.sql ${DB_NAME} $PWD1 >> ${DB_NAME}.sql
    exit 0
    The script picks up the $DB_NAME variable fine, and therefore invokes the required sql script.
    However, when I pass the variable $PWD1 to the sql script I get an error.
    The script creates a database link:
    create or replace procedure new.link
    is
    begin
    execute immediate 'create database link TEST
    connect to TESTSCH identified by '$PWD1'
    using ''TEST''';
    end;
    exec new.link;
    output is:
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-00911: invalid character
    ORA-06512: at "NEW.LINK", line 4
    ORA-06512: at line 1
    any help appreciated!

    SQL*Plus passes the arguments to the script as if executing the file using the SQL*Plus START command. If no file suffix (file extension) is specified, the suffix defined by the SET SUFFIX command is used. The default suffix is .sql.
    See the START command for more information.

    Data items you wish to pass to parameters in the script. If you enter one or more arguments, SQL*Plus substitutes the values into the parameters (&1, &2, and so forth) in the script. The first argument replaces each occurrence of &1, the second replaces each occurrence of &2, and so on.
    >
    ... clearly explaining that SQL*Plus substitutes the substitution variables &1, &2 etc. in the script with the passed in arguments.
    Your script was including a Unix style substitution, not an SQL*Plus script substitution, so that's seems to be the most likely cause of your problem.
    And still you haven't come back to say whether it's worked for you or not... leaving others guessing as to whether you still need help.

  • Running SQLPLUS Script From APEX

    Hello.
    I am running APEX 2.x and have a need to invoke a SQLPLUS script (it's a report)
    via an APEX page. I would like to create a button on a page that, when clicked,
    will somehow invoke a SQLPLUS script.
    The script may either be stored within a CLOB column in a table and then SELECTed (via the button press) or be in a .sql file on the UNIX server (presumably, then, I would need to invoke a UNIX shell script that, in turn, runs
    the .sql file).
    I would really appreciate any help on this.
    Thank you in advance.

    I did not notice that the cut and paste was poor. It should have read
    SQL> @dm$load.pkb
    SP2-0310: unable to open file "dm$load.pkb"
    SQL> host ls
    dm$load.pkb
    Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

    Is it possible to schedule SQLPLUS script with 6 different parameters? If yes then how can I schedule for monday to friday or only for Saturday and sundays.
    Please provide brief steps.
    Thanks for your help in advance.
    - Mehul

    Let me explain to you about scheduler.
    You can schedule a pl/sql stored procedure TEST_S as follows...
    Begin
    dbms_scheduler.create_job(
    job_name=>'MY_JOB',
    Job_Type=>'STORED_PROCEDURE',
    job_action=>'TEST_S',
    start_date=>sysdate,
    repeat_interval=>'freq=monthly;BYDAY=MON,TUE,WED,THU,FRI',
    end_date=>null');
    END;
    You can also also execute o/s script like .bat or .sh. For this job type should be EXECUTABLE.
    Example of converting a .sql script in .bat script...
    insert.sql
    insert into dept values(50,'IT','LONDON');
    exit
    insert.bat
    sqlplus scott/tiger @insert.sql
    Executing now...
    C:\Documents and Settings>insert.bat
    C:\Documents and Settings>sqlplus scott/tiger @insert.sql

  • How to write errors in sqlplus script into logging table?

    Hi,
    I am having sqlplus script which do some DDL and DML statements.
    Now is there any way to logg errors which pop up when the script is esxecuting?
    For example something like:
    WHENEVER SQLERROR EXIT SQL.SQLCODE
    BEGIN
    /* SOME DDL OR DDL */
    CREATE TABLE A
    COL_1 NUMBER,
    COL_2 NUMBER
    /* Wrong sql statement */
    INSERT INTO TABLE_DOWS_NOT_EXISTS(....);
    EXCEPTION WHEN OTHERS THEN
    INSERT INTO logging_tbl (error_description) VALUES(SQL.SQLCODE);
    END;
    I know, this one will tell sqlplus to exit with sql error code without trapping into exception section, but is there any way to handle it?
    Thanks

    An approach would be to enable spooling in the beginning of your script. Wrap dbms_output into an error_log procedure. The error_log should simple write an errorcode + message to the prompt.<br>Afterwards - a search batchjob or manual search for errorcode occurances in the script spool file(s) should reveal the outcome.

  • Sqlplus script to run all *.sql files returned by snv diff --summarize

    Hi,
    Is there a way to write a sqlplus script which will ask for a directory (or input from an svn diff --summarize) as in input param , then loop recursively through all files returned and run them from within as: @filename.sql ?
    Getting it to work with svn diff would be the icing on the cake.

    type deploy_all.sql
    sqlplus usrid/pw @deploy_all.sql %schema%PS: Even to execute everything from SQLPLUS, you still would need to create a temporary file with the list of commands.

    There is some SQL construct that it is allowed in sqlplus script but it does not seem to work as static sql

    This will depend on your site and the typical privilege level, but I find an enormous advantage of dbms_scheduler is that database developers can develop, test and monitor scheduled jobs (and depending on your refresh mechanism, dbms_scheduler jobs may automatically appear in your test environments) using whatever desktop tools and queries they like, without requiring any access to the server. As a database developer with no access to the server I find that quite valuable.

  • Running sqlplus scripts from Java code?

    hi
    I need to programmatically run sqlplus scripts from Java code on a machine that doesn't have sqlplus installed.
    Is there any Java class library available for doing this?

    The Ant approach could probably work for me, thanks for the tip.
    The setup seems rather complex however, given the simplicity of the task. I would prefer just running a Java based SQL*Plus from in a separate process or doing this via an API that would allow me to run SQL*Plus scripts (parse script, substitute variables, run statements).
    Oracle SQL Developer v1.1 appears to include an API that does exactly this.
    The ScriptParser, Substitution and SQLPLUS classes in the oracle.dbtools.raptor.scriptrunner package (oracle.sqldeveloper.jar) seem to do just what I need based on my tests.
    Can I use these classes for this purpose in my application? Is repackaging allowed?
    Does Oracle have any plans for releasing this sort of functionality separately e.g. as part of the Instant Client?
