Sqlplus set statement:format the output without specifying every col length
Hi ppl,
i am writing below query inside a shell script. Is there any way to format the output of sqlplus without providing the name of all the columns that we are going to output. for example, in below code i have specified the column width of the columns i want to output. but if the number of columns is large (or when we want to do a select * from...) then it becomes tedious to write all of them. Is there any way i can define display length all the columns to be of same size.. or at least all the number columns of one size, char columns of one size etc...
sqlplus -sa/passwd@db_name << EOF
SET ECHO ON;
SET HEADING ON;
COLUMN USERNAME FORMAT A20;
COLUMN USER_ID FORMAT A20;
COLUMN PASSWORD FORMAT A20;
spool filename.txt
some qry... ;
exit
EOFThanks

Edited by: KnockTurnAll on 26-Oct-2010 04:25My SQL*Plus is a bit rusty, but I don't think you can for characters. You can set NUMWIDTH for a default size for numeric columns.
You could write a small bit of SQL to generate the required column definitions. You could even hit ALL_TAB_COLUMNS to generate a generic 'set every column width' file and run it as a separate sql script in your main script. Not sure if there is an upper limit on the number of Columns you can define.
Back in the day when we did everything with SQL*Plus scripts, we had a standard columns file that we called in all our scripts, just for this purpose.

Again, new to sqlplus and Oracle, so thanks in advance.
I am using 'set NULL "0"' to print a zero when I have a null value.
The problem I am having is that the "0" that is printing does not
seem to be behaving like the other column values (which are numbers).
set heading off
set echo on
set newpage 1
set pagesize 55
set linesize 66
column FW_STREAM_NAME FORMAT a20
column SUM(TOTAL_RECORDS) FORMAT 9,999 JUSTIFY RIGHT

TO_DATE('20100826000000','yyyymmddhh24miss') AND
TO_DATE('20100826235900','yyyymmddhh24miss') GROUP BY FW_STREAM_NAME
and here is the output:
APPLES12345 2,810
ORANGES3456 36
BANANAS12456 16
PEARS6789 0
CHERRIES 131
Everything is lined up except my special column, where sqlplus has replace the null with
a "0" as I asked it to.
How can I get it to line up with the rest of the numerical column entries?
Thanks,
MitchTry this:

How to get the character set which i want it to be?
i confront a problem, when using jdbc to connect to oracle8i database on solaris; because i use getBinaryStream() to read from db in "byte" reading, seemly it would use default character set on OS or database(such as EUC,etc.), not which the client i want it to be. is there anyway to take control of such code writing(i mean to change the character set when i get byte out of database, thus the byte would use NLS_LANG the same as using sqlplus setting in user env)?
First of all read Note 581312 - Oracle database: licensing restrictions:
As of point 3, it follows that direct access to the Oracle database is only allowed for tools from the areas of system administration and monitoring. If other software is used, the following actions, among other things, are therefore forbidden at database level:
Creating database users
Create database objects
Querying/changing/creating data in the database
Using ODBC or other SAP external access methods
Are you trying this on the database server itself? If yes, then you need to install the hebrew codepages as well as hebrew fonts in order to display the data correctly.

HI all,
please see the following script where the variable length is more than a 100 charecters...
When i run this in sqlplus with SERVEROUTPUT ON, i see the ouput being truncated to 100 charecters.

Please advice.

Sorry... I Previewed the post but did not notice my code being truncated in my sqlplus sesssion.
The actual script has the output to 130 charecters. but when i close the edit (afeidt.buf) and execute it, the display only shows 100 charecters...
My SQLPLUS version is 9.2.0.1.
I am using the "WE8ISO8859P1" charecter set.

This is not a big issue but is there any way to avoid this blank line?

SET RECSEP OFFeliminates the extra lines.
The way to un-do that command is, unintuitively:
SET RECSEP WRAPPED -
Truncates XML output on SQLPLUS
I am novice with XML and oralce use. so i am using the normal
select XMLelement method to extract data from oracle into XML
here a sample
select XMLElement("Person",person.name || ' ' || physical_person.firstname,
XMLElement ("buysell",pl_view."buysell"),
XMLElement ("leftc", pl_view."left"),
XMLElement ("rightc", pl_view."right"),
XMLElement ("reference", pl_view."reference"))
but the output i get is truncated. a "set linesize" did not help. what am i doing wrong.
or is there another simpler way to do what i want..Hi,
I use the following settings to view xml data via SQLPlus:
SET ECHO OFF
SET NEWPAGE 0
SET SPACE 0
set long 1999999
SET PAGESIZE 0
SET FEEDBACK OFF
SET HEADING OFF
SET TRIMSPOOL ON
set termout off
SPOOL c:\temp\cpu.xml
select * from <view_or_table_name_containing_xml>;
Although this increases the amount of data output, it still truncates to the size of the LONG setting. I believe the max value for SET LONG n, is 2 miliion for n.
If you were able to solve this problem, please post back to this thread.
Thx. -

In what order are results from gather_database_stats 'LIST AUTO' returned?
11.2.0.1.0. The results from the following seem to have some order to them (groupings of objects returned alphabetically). Didn't see anywhere in the docs to indicate what's getting returned in what order (empty stats, stale stats). I looked at table stats for one at the top of the list and it looks like the table had stats gathered recently, so i'm confused. I ran this from sqlplus:
set serveroutput on size unlimited;
DECLARE
ObjList dbms_stats.ObjectTab;
BEGIN
dbms_stats.gather_database_stats(objlist=>ObjList, options=>'LIST AUTO');
FOR i in ObjList.FIRST..ObjList.LAST
LOOP
dbms_output.put_line(ObjList(i).ownname || '.' || ObjList(i).ObjName || ' ' || ObjList(i).ObjType || ' ' || ObjList(i).partname);
END LOOP;
END;
/Enlightened answer: "So bug off and work with what you get"
The report was run on a database that doesnt have any auto stat collection occurring. There are 4000 items returned in the list. One of the items looks ok when you look at dba_tables (row count correct and last_analyzed recent). Just trying to figure out why this table was included in the list. Might be the way stats collected for it isn't updating some mechanism that gather_database_stats is utilizing. From what I can tell the order is 1) tables with no stats, 2) indexes with no stats, 3) stale tables. -

ULTRA SEARCH 10G
=============================================
PURPOSE
Explanation
Bulletin No: 22844 Oracle Text 10gR1
At the OS prompt, change to the following directory:
Unix: $ORACLE_HOME/ultrasearch/admin
Windows: $ORACLE_HOME\ultrasearch\admin
Note 276554.1 <How to Reload the JVM in 10.1.0.X>
5) wk0install.sql SQL script
-- SYS = "&1" <== sys 유저 명: SYS
-- SYSPW = "&2" <== sys 유저의 패스워드: (예 change_on_install)
-- WKSYSPW = "&3" <== WKSYS 유저의 패스워드: (예 wksys)
-- WK_TABLESPACE = "&4" <== WKSYS의 default tablespace: (예 SYSAUX)
-- WK_TEMPTABLESPACE = "&5" <== WKSYS의 temporary tablespace: (예 TEMP)
-- CONN_STRING = "&6" <== non-RAC instance 환경에서 Ultra Search를 설치할 경우
null string을 지정 : (예 "")
RAC 환경에서 설치할 경우 TNS descriptor: (예 <host name>:<port number>:<SID>
(DESCRIPTION=(LOAD_BALANCE=yes)(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)
(HOST=cls02a)(PORT=3999)) (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=cls02b)(PORT=3999)))
(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=acme.us.com)))" )
-- PORTAL_USER = "&7" <== Portal 유저. Portal을 사용하지 않는다면 null string 입력: (예 "")
-- LAUNCH_ANYWHERE = "&8" <== TRUE 또는 FALSE; Clustered File System (CFS)을 사용하는
SQLPLUS> set echo on
SQLPLUS> spool ultrasearch_inst.log
SQLPLUS> @$ORACLE_HOME/ultrasearch/admin/wk0install.sql SYS change_on_install wksys SYSAUX TEMP "" "" FALSE
SQLPLUS> spool off
SQLPLUS> exit
SQL> SELECT COUNT(*) FROM DBA_OBJECTS
WHERE OWNER = 'WKSYS';
COUNT(*)
351
SQL> SELECT COUNT(*) FROM DBA_OBJECTS
WHERE OWNER = 'WKSYS' AND STATUS = 'INVALID';
COUNT(*)
0
(Bulletin No: 21563 ULTRA SEARCH 수동 설치 및 제거 (9.2.0.1)
Unix: $ORACLE_HOME/ultrasearch/admin
Windows: $ORACLE_HOME\ultrasearch\admin
SELECT SID, SERIAL#, OSUSER FROM V$SESSION
WHERE USERNAME = 'WKSYS';
5) wk0deinst.sql SQL
-- SYS = "&1" <== sys 유저 명: SYS
-- SYSPW = "&2" <== sys 유저의 패스워드: (예 change_on_install)
-- CONN_STRING = "&3" <== non-RAC instance 환경에서 Ultra Search를 설치할 경우
null string을 지정 : (예 "")
RAC 환경에서 설치할 경우 TNS descriptor: (예 <host name>:<port number>:<SID>
(DESCRIPTION=(LOAD_BALANCE=yes)(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)
(HOST=cls02a)(PORT=3999)) (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=cls02b)(PORT=3999)))
(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=acme.us.com)))" )
Ultra Search
SQLPLUS> set echo on
SQLPLUS> spool ultrasearch_deinst.log
SQLPLUS> @$ORACLE_HOME/ultrasearch/admin/wk0deinst.sql SYS
change_on_install ""
SQLPLUS> spool off
SQLPLUS> exit

Spatial Queries are CPU bound and show very heavy use of query buffers
Hi,
Spatial Queries:
When using tkprof to analyse spatial queries it is clear that
there are implicit queries being done by Oracle spatial which
use vast amounts of buffers, and seem unable to cache basic
information from query to query - thus resulting in our machine
being CPU bound when stress testing Oracle Spatial, for example
the example below shows how information which is fixed for a
table and not likely to change very often is being retrieved
inefficiently (note the 26729 query buffers being used to do 6
executions of what should be immediately available!!!):

Can Oracle improve the performance of Oracle spatial by
improving the implementation so as to perform alternative
implicit queries so as not to use these vast amounts of memory?
Cheers
Alex EadieHi Ravi,
Thankyou for your reply.
Here are some more details for you:
Yes the queries are cached in that it gets its data from RAM and
not from disk however the number of buffers used internally by
Oracle RDBMS/Spatial is rather large and results in significant
CPU usage (namely > 5000 per query or >40MByte). Which I'm sure
you'd agree? Those numerous internal queries taking >10ms CPU
time each, which is culmulative.
A single real of ours query of will take between 180ms and 580ms
depending on the number of results returned.
An example query is:
select a.id, a.geom
from tile_med_lines_mbr a where sdo_relate
(a.geom,mdsys.sdo_geometry
(2003,NULL, NULL,mdsys.sdo_elem_info_array
(1,1003,3),mdsys.sdo_ordinate_array(151.21121,
-33.86325,151.21132,-33.863136)), 'mask=anyinteract
querytype=WINDOW') = 'TRUE'
Our 500Mhz PC Server database can only execute 3 processes
running these queries simultaneously to go to 100% CPU loaded.
The disk is hardly utilized.
The data is the main roads in Sydney, Australia.
The tables, data and indexes were created as shown below:
1. Create the Oracle tables:
create table tile_med_nodes_mbr (
id number not null,
geom mdsys.sdo_geometry not null,
xl number not null,
yl number not null,
xh number not null,
yh number not null);
create table tile_med_lines_mbr (
id number not null,
fromid number not null,
toid number not null,
geom mdsys.sdo_geometry not null,
xl number not null,
yl number not null,
xh number not null,
yh number not null);
2. Use the sqlldr Oracle loader utility to load the data
into Oracle.
% sqlldr userid=csiro_scats/demo control=nodes.ctl
% sqlldr userid=csiro_scats/demo control=lines.ctl
3. Determine the covering spatial extent for the tile
mosaic and use this to create the geometry metadata.
% sqlplus
SQLPLUS> set numw 12
SQLPLUS> select min(xl), min(yl), max(xh), max(yh)
from (select xl, yl, xh, yh
from tile_med_nodes_mbr union
select xl, yl, xh, yh
from tile_med_lines_mbr);
insert into USER_SDO_GEOM_METADATA
(TABLE_NAME, COLUMN_NAME, DIMINFO)
VALUES ('TILE_MED_NODES_MBR', 'GEOM',
MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ARRAY
(MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ELEMENT('X', 151.21093421,
151.21205421, 0.000000050),
MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ELEMENT('Y', -33.86347146,
-33.86234146, 0.000000050)));
insert into USER_SDO_GEOM_METADATA
(TABLE_NAME, COLUMN_NAME, DIMINFO)
VALUES ('TILE_MED_LINES_MBR', 'GEOM',
MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ARRAY
(MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ELEMENT('X', 151.21093421,
151.21205421, 0.000000050),
MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ELEMENT('Y', -33.86347146,
-33.86234146, 0.000000050)));
4. Validate the data loaded:
create table result
(UNIQ_ID number, result varchar2(10));
execute sdo_geom.validate_layer
('TILE_MED_NODES_MBR','GEOM','ID','RESULT');
select result, count(result)
from RESULT
group by result;
truncate table result;
execute sdo_geom.validate_layer
('TILE_MED_LINES_MBR','GEOM','ID','RESULT');
select result, count(result)
from RESULT
group by result;
drop table result;
5. Fix any problems reported in the result table.
6. Create a spatial index, use the spatial index advisor to
determine the sdo_level.
create index tile_mlines_spind on
tile_med_lines_mbr (geom) indextype is
mdsys.spatial_index parameters
( 'sdo_level=7,initial=1M,next=1M,pctincrease=0');
7. Analyse table:
analyze table TILE_MED_LINES_MBR compute statistics;
8. Find the spatial index table name:
select sdo_index_table, sdo_column_name
from user_sdo_index_metadata
where sdo_index_name in
(select index_name
from user_indexes
where ityp_name = 'SPATIAL_INDEX'
and table_name = 'TILE_MED_LINES_MBR');
9. Analyse spatial index table:
analyze table TILE_MLINES_SPIND_FL7$
compute statistics;
I hope this helps.
Cheers

Oracle 9i Database 9.2.0.1.0 Issues...
Hi Friends,
I downloaded the Oracle DB 9i Enterprise Edition (9.2.0.1) from Oracle's website for my class assignment. When I got to the screen that says "Installation types" Oracle 9i Database 9.2.0.1.0 and hit the NEXT button the universal installer disappears with no warning right at 36%. So then I tried to choose "Custom" instead of Enterprise Edition and the same exact thing happened. My computer specs are as follows:
O/S: Windows XP Professional
CPU: 2.8 Ghz
Phys. Memory: 1,024 MB
Available Physical Memory: 324 MB
Hard Disk: 210 GB free space
I would appreciate ANY help as my assignment is due on Monday. I have uninstalled and reinstalled so many times and nothing seems to work. My friend suggested that there may be a DLL file causing conflict somewhere. I don't know...I just need help and I am so frustrated with this! Thanks.Hello Everyone,
I found a log file in c:\program files\oracle\inventory\logs. I am not sure if this will show anything but I am so desparate right now that I am willing to try just about anything. So...below please find my log file when I tried to do the install. If this is the wrong log file, can you please tell me where to go to get the right one. Thanks friends! This is the most frustrating thing...

Weird plan when comparing strings in a where clause
Hi,
I would like to understand what happens in the following queries. It contains a spatial operator and a spatial index, but it isn't relevant.
FIRST CASE - compare a varchar2 field equality (bold)
select /*+ INDEX(t1 FIRST_TABLE_SPATIAL_INDEX) */ t1.rowid rid1,t2.rowid rid2, SDO_NN_DISTANCE(1) dist
from dbti.FIRST_TABLE t1,dbti.FIRST_TABLE t2,dbti10.SECOND_TABLE w
where w.r2='AAAkBmAAEAAAmbrAAE' and w.r1=t1.rowid and t1.cr01_idobj<>t2.cr01_idobj
and t1.MY_FIELD IN ('plant','house')
and t2.MY_FIELD IN ('plant','house')
and t1.MY_FIELD = t2.MY_FIELD
and sdo_nn(t2.GEOMFIELD,t1.GEOMFIELD,'sdo_num_res=5', 1)='TRUE'
In this case the plan is a full scan on both the FIRST_TABLEs, and doesn't use the spatial index as required in the hint.
SECOND CASE: the equality is checked using <= and >=
select /*+ INDEX(t1 FIRST_TABLE_SPATIAL_INDEX) */ t1.rowid rid1,t2.rowid rid2, SDO_NN_DISTANCE(1) dist
from dbti.FIRST_TABLE t1,dbti.FIRST_TABLE t2,dbti10.SECOND_TABLE w
where w.r2='AAAkBmAAEAAAmbrAAE' and w.r1=t1.rowid and t1.cr01_idobj<>t2.cr01_idobj
and t1.MY_FIELD IN ('plant','house')
and t2.MY_FIELD IN ('plant','house')
and t1.MY_FIELD <= t2.MY_FIELD and t1.MY_FIELD >= t2.MY_FIELD
and sdo_nn(t2.GEOMFIELD,t1.GEOMFIELD,'sdo_num_res=5', 1)='TRUE'
in this case the spatial index is correctly used, and the query executes with the expected performance.
QUESTION: why the equality operator causes the index not being used? And why the second case works?
thanks,

giovanniThe queries you are comparing are not logically equivalent. The reason for the generated plans would be that the cost based optimizer determined the access paths were the 'best' given the data it has on hand (indexes available, statistics present, etc...).
Perhaps your statistics are not representative of the data in the tables? What happens when you run the following in SQLPLUS
set serveroutput off
ALTER SESSION SET STATISTICS_LEVEL = ALL;
select /*+ INDEX(t1 FIRST_TABLE_SPATIAL_INDEX) */ t1.rowid rid1,t2.rowid rid2, SDO_NN_DISTANCE(1) dist
from dbti.FIRST_TABLE t1,dbti.FIRST_TABLE t2,dbti10.SECOND_TABLE w
where w.r2='AAAkBmAAEAAAmbrAAE' and w.r1=t1.rowid and t1.cr01_idobjt2.cr01_idobj
and t1.MY_FIELD IN ('plant','house')
and t2.MY_FIELD IN ('plant','house')
and t1.MY_FIELD = t2.MY_FIELD
and sdo_nn(t2.GEOMFIELD,t1.GEOMFIELD,'sdo_num_res=5', 1)='TRUE' ;
SELECT * FROM TABLE(DBMS_XPLAN.DISPLAY_CURSOR(NULL, NULL, 'ALL'));
