Ssh  and compression in solaris 10

Hi All
Installed OpenSSH on solaris 10 box. Hoped that ssh will work the same as rsh. I have scripts which use rsh and are having problems using ssh. Also I have a problem with compression. This is not related to ssh (I think )
I compress binary file and try to extract it on a different node as follows
cat <compressed file> | rsh(/ssh) -n <node> "uncompress|cpio -idm..."
this spits out stdin: not in compressed format.
However if I ftp the file to <node> and do the above command and without the rsh/(ssh), it works fine.
Has any one seen these pecularities. Appreciate your help and inputs
Regards

Your command looks okay to me.
Any chance that on <node> you have a .profile/.login/.cshrc or something that is spewing data to output? That might confuse the uncompress.
In other words, if you do this....
# echo "Test message" > /tmp/msg
# cat /tmp/msg | ssh node "cat - > /tmp/msg"
# ssh node
node# cat /tmp/msg
What do you get? Ignore the compression part for now and investigate if data is being transported properly.

  • Sgd + ldap auth + ssh and numeric usernames

Hi there, sorry if there is a well known answer to my problem, bu tI have not found it.
anyway, We have a problem where our customer wants to use purelly numeric usernames to logg in to secure global desktop
From the point of secure global desktop we don't have any problems with this, the problem happens later on with the ssh to solaris (which is set up with ldap authentication) in that I have not been able to get purely numerical logins to work with solaris pam_ldap. Now some of you think that this is not an SGD problem, and that is true, but I was wondering if SGD could help me solve this.
My question is simple, can SGD use a "different" username taken from ldap after it has logged in the user instead of the username tha tthe user provided.
    ex.
the user loggs in to SGD with the username 173651
when starting the application , instead of logging in to the application server (via ssh) with username 173651 it should take an other field from ldap that holds the solaris username.
thanks for any answers and hints.

Sorry, but you missunderstood my question a bit :-)
What you suggest is a way for the users to type in an other username after logged in to Secure Global desktop, tha tis now what we want
We want this to be done automaticly for us.
First we have changed a bit how the login procedure works, when the user surfs to the SGD server they will not be presented with any choices, they wil be presented with a single login screen, when they have logged in SGD will automaticly start our application.
the problem we have is that we want to use only digits as the login name in SGD, but unforutunally Solaris have some problems with using digits alone in usernames (and especially usernames longer then 8 characters)
so I was hoping that SGD could read from LDAP (we are using LDAP user store, not UNIX) another value that it would use to login to the app server thorugh SSH
for example, when logging in to SGD it loggs in towards the LDAP uid field, but when it starts the application SGD reads some other property from LDAP and sends that to ssh. Solaris is then also authenticating towards SSH and uses the second property to authenticate.
If this cannot be done in Secure global Desktop, I think we will look at using a third party authenticator that can do what we want (hopefully OpenSSO can do this)

  • AUDIT action (create, delete, privilege escalation, set and change password from users account and group) users and admins in Solaris 10

    Hello.
in Solaris 10 i need auditing process create, delete, privilege escalation, set and change password and etc... from users account and group.
    I set settings:
    in file syslog.conf:
    *.info;mail.none;cron.none;audit.notice            @IP-Remote-syslog-server-SIEM
    in file   /etc/security/audit_control:
    dir:/var/audit
    flags:lo,ad,ex,cc,am,no,fc,fd
    minfree:20
    naflags:lo
    plugin:name=audit_syslog.so;p_flags=lo,ad,ex,cc,am,no
    in file   /etc/security/audit_user:
    root:lo,ad:no
Now I see in the logs only the fact of a connection via SSH and run processes on behalf of users. Creation. delete users, change passwords for some reason do not is logged.
Many users. For each individual write permissions in the file /etc/security/audit_user not possible, it is likely to forget any new user (or there is a possibility in this file one line to describe the audits for all accounts?)
    Where is the mistake?

You are most likely hitting Bug 15779000 user/role/groupadd/mod/del don't audit their use.
And the fix is only available in S11.2.

    Hello All...
Back after a brief absence, things look a little bit different.
I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.
    Thanks!

Thank you for the replies.  Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems.  I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work.  I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic.  When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones.  This actually helped.  I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems.  I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac.  I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed.  Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.

  • ASA 5505 + ASA 5540 static VPN, ssh and rdp problems

    Greetings!
I've recentely set up a VPN between Cisco ASA 5540(8.4) ana 5505(8.3).
Everything works fine, but there is a small problem that is really annoying me.
From the inside network behind ASA 5505 I connect via rdp or ssh to a host inside ASA 5540.
Then I minimize ssh and rdp windows and don't use it for ten minutes. But I still use VPN for downloading some files.
Then I open ssh window - the session is inactive, open rdp window - I see a black screen (for 10-15 seconds, and then it shows RDP)
There are no timeouts on ssh or rdp hosts configured, via GRE tunnel it works perfectly without any hangs.
What can I do to get rid of this problem?
    Thanks in advance.

    Dear Fedor,
You could try adding the following commands to your configuration (on both ASAs) in order to increase the timeout values of the specific TCP sessions:
    access-l rdp_ssh permit tcp 1.1.1.0 255.255.255.0 2.2.2.0 255.255.255.0 eq 22
    access-l rdp_ssh permit tcp 1.1.1.0 255.255.255.0 2.2.2.0 255.255.255.0 eq 3389
    class-map TCP_TIMEOUT
          match access-list rdp_ssh
    policy-map global_policy
         class TCP_TIMEOUT
              set connection timeout idle 0:30:00
              set connection timeout half 0:30:00
    * Please make sure you define the specific RDP and SSH ports in the ACL and avoid the use of "permit ip any any".
    Let me know.

  • Problem with ssh and bash-completion

I and a co-worker are having a weird problem with ssh and bash-completion. We have a local config in .ssh/config with hosts we connect everyday. An example:
    host foo
    hostname foo.org
    user foobar
    host foobar
    hostname foobar.org
    user foobar
    When we try to type
    ssh foo<tab><tab>b<tab>
the console just freeze and we can't type anything, everything we type is ignored, but after about 30 seconds the host is completed.
This works a some time ago, so some upgrade make this happen. Anyone can reproduce this?

  • HTTP Headers - enabling caching and compression with the portal?

Has anyone configured their web server (IIS or Apache) or use a commercial product to flawlessly cache and compress all content generated by the portal?
Compression and caching is critical for making our portal based applictions work for overseas users. It should be doable, just taking advantage of standard HTTP protocols, but implementing this a complex system like the portal is tricky, we seem to be generating different values in the HTTP Headers for the same types of files (such as CSS).
We are running Apache so can't take advantage of the built in compression capabilities of the .net portal. We are running the java vervion. 6.1 mp1, sql server 2000 (portal, search, collab, publisher, studio, analytics, custom .net and java portlets on remote server).
Basically our strategy is to compress all outgoing static and dynamic text content (html, CSS, javascript), and to cache all static files (CSS, javascript, images) for 6 months to a year depending on file type.
Here are some links on the subjects of caching and compression that I have compiled:

    The

If IE and/or a recent version of Netscape/Mozilla is not possible then
    there are
    really only two options:
    1) Faster client hardware - not likely to be an acceptable solution.
    2) Minimize the number of portlets and the complexity within the portlets.
Neither of these solutions are a great answer, but the 4.7 series of

getting pretty old. Having said that, we've got customers who want to
    continue
    to use IE 4 :)
Again, though, this problem is, I'm afraid out of our hands. It is the

    It only started happening recently.
    Anyone has any clue?
Thanks for the help in advance!!!

Found that the second hard drive is broken. I have to go to the apple store to have it replaced.
I had to press the power button to turn the server off for several times, then the broken hard drive went disappeared. After that, I had to disable the Spotlight. Then the server went back to work normally.
Now I made a CCC copy of the primary hard drive, and would like to have the server run on the external raid disk (connected through thunderbolt). Does anyone have previous experience with it? Any expectable drawback or issue with this setup?

  • How can I use my Mac G3 (OS 9.2.2) to make Windows disk images and compress them into Windows stuffed archives?

I have a collection of old Windows diskettes, 800 K and 1.4 MB.  I want to make disk images (or whatever is the Windows equivalent) and compress them into Windows stuffed archives.  I want Windows users to be able to download them, expand the stuffed archives, extract the disk images, and use the softsare on old Windows computers.  I need to do the work on a Power Macintosh beige G3 Tower using OS 9.2.2.  What software can I get to do it?

    To Jan, Greetings
Thank you for your message and for your suggestions.
Is WinZip a Mac application that makes compressed files that can be opened on a Windows computer?  If so, then do you have any notion where I could find a version old enough to run on OS 9.2.2?
I noticed that DropStuff 6.0, which I use on my G3 Tower, has an option to make compressed files that are self-extracting on Windows.  Do you know if that works?  I suppose that I could make such a file and then find somebody with a Windows computer to test if for me.
Yes, I could (shudder) get an old Windows computer somewhere, learn to use it, and do the project that way.  Do you know if the old versions of Windows include disk image programs and file compression  programs?  Or, would I need to buy some old software?
Thank you for the information about the size of the diskettes.  As you've probably noticed, I don't know very much about Windows things.

  • Dbms_redefinition package and COMPRESS attribute of the target table

    Hi experts,
we have an already partitioned and compressed table under Oracle 10g R2 wich we want to move to another tablespace using online redefinition.
The table should keep the Partitions and compressed data after the move.
My question is: How much storage we must have in place for the move of the table ?
    Example:
tab (compressed size) : 1000 MB
tab (uncompressed size) : 4000 MB
Seems it depends on how redefinition handles the move of the compressed data.
So if redefinition uses INSERT /* APPEND */ .... is should be roundabout 1000 MB ("compress during write")
    Is this assumption correct ?
Can anybody shed some light on redefinition wich kind of compression-conserving stragetgy it uses ?
    bye
    BB

    From the 11.2 admin guide:
Create an empty interim table (in the same schema as the table to be redefined) with all of the desired logical and physical attributes. If columns are to be dropped, do not include them in the definition of the interim table. If a column is to be added, then add the column definition to the interim table. If a column is to be modified, create it in the interim table with the properties that you want. The table being redefined remains available for queries and DML during the entire process.
Execute the FINISH_REDEF_TABLE procedure to complete the redefinition of the table. During this procedure, the original table is locked in exclusive mode for a very short time, independent of the amount of data in the original table. However, FINISH_REDEF_TABLE will wait for all pending DML to commit before completing the redefinition.>
If you did not want to create an interim table, then this approach is not going to work for you. There is no requirement for you to create anything other than the interim table, and any dependent objects can be done automatically, including materialized views. Where did you see that you have to create mview logs?

  • Why Does idvd take my 26.2gb imovie file and compress it so small?

Please help. I've created a 17+ minute long imovie file that is 26.2gb. When I view the file information in idvd it says that it's only 0.6gb.
I've already burned a test copy and it looked way too compressed. Like a bad jpg file. From idvd, I burned 'best quality' to a disc image and toasted it. I know that idvd decides who to do the compression in some complex way, but is there another method to not have so much compression?
    Thanks...

    Robert,
DV (as normally exported from iMovie to iDVD) runs
about 13 GB per hour. You say your content is 17
minutes and 26.GB - what CODEC did you use?
DVDs are in MPG-2 compressed format. In Best Quality
mode iDVD will take 120 minutes of DV content and
compress it to about 4 GB. So 17 minutes of content
    could be about .6 GB.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't pick a codec. I just clicked create idvd from imovie and it did it for me. I've made at least 10 other dvds and haven't seen this much loss of quality before. I'm just not sure why...
0.6 was project size and I guess your math is right, but I've very disappointed with quality.
    Thanks,
    Bob
