Ssh non-functional after Leopard update

Hi everyone
I upgraded to Leopard three days ago, and I am still trying to solve problems it appears to have created.
One of these problems is that ssh doesn't work.
Pearl:~ clytie$ ssh 10.1.1.1
percent_expand: NULL replacement
Pearl:~ clytie$ ssh -v
OpenSSH_4.6p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8e 23 Feb 2007
usage: ssh [-1246AaCfgkMNnqsTtVvXxY] [-b bind_address] [-c cipher_spec]
[-D [bind_address:]port] [-e escape_char] [-F configfile]
[-i identity_file] [-L [bind_address:]port:host:hostport]
[-l login_name] [-m mac_spec] [-O ctl_cmd] [-o option] [-p port]
[-R [bind_address:]port:host:hostport] [-S ctl_path]
[-w localtun[:remotetun]] [user@]hostname [command]
Pearl:~ clytie$
"ssh ADDRESS" or "ssh HOSTNAME" simply gives the "percent_expand: NULL replacement" response, which I don't understand.
(Luckily, we also have a Mac Mini on our home net, which I haven't upgraded to Leopard yet, so I was able to ssh from that machine.)
I am really disappointed that so many things appear to have been broken by the Leopard upgrade. Repairing permissions, restarting and installing new versions fixed some of the problems, but I still can't receive email (separate thread), and I shudder to think what else is broken that I just haven't tried yet.
Thankyou for any help you can offer with this.

Google finds this fix:
http://www.nabble.com/ssh:-percent_expand:-NULL-replacement-t4701144.html
which works for me.
Be careful when copying the config data: trailing spaces cause config errors.

  • WAKE UP APPLE. SpotLight & Time-Machine effectively non-functioning after 10.7.5 combo update

I have just done a complete clean restore from Snow Leopard DVD, doing all its Updates. Then, installed Lion from App store and did the 10.7.5 Combo update. (All that took 2 days).
    Time-Machine and Spotlight non functioning....
Turned off Spotlight and Time-Machine got my apps & data back...
Turned off Time-Machine and turned on Spotlight - nothing.
Followed every combination of the many many helpful tips in this discussion group (involving Onyx, Terminal, Console, Privacy, removing all external drives etc etc). Finally Spotlght began to index.....
3 days later, it was about 60% complete but slowing down. I rebooted (nothing else) and now Spotlight has restarted the Index once again and I have 3 weeks to wait now.... (Ihave about 600 Gbyte of data on a 1 Tbyte disk)
Many others have had similar problems
So clearly there is a significant bug in the system - with no sure fire workaround - and no apparent reaction from Apple staff about what they are doing or what sequence of actions one needs to take to resolve this issue.
This is sad - Apple is going the same way as IBM, DEC, Microsoft, Adobe - loading functioning systems with more and more bells and whistles until finally they trip over their own feet with the complexity of the whole works.
I feel entitled to moan - having owned nothing but Apple computers for 30 years.
(I tried to upgrade to Mountain Lion two weeks ago, but the App store installation just froze and Apple say the DVD drive is a dying species and will supply no disks or other media to do proper restores.....!)
ANY IDEAS ABOUT HOW TO WAKE APPLE PEOPLE UP!

Time Machine just doesn't seem to function with lion or Mountaain Lion. I don't know about Spotlight, but I use Intego Backup Assistant for my backup and its doing fine.

  • After Leopard Update this AM, My Airport Card is Disabled!

I ran the small Leopard update this morning. After a reboot, my 24" iMac's (aluminum) airport card is disabled. Mac OS X 10.5 says that no airport card is installed. I tried rebooting again, but no luck. This is totally unacceptable. I have never had such issues with Apple before. My only reprieve was to plug in an ethernet cable. Under "About This Mac" it does not show an Airport card is installed any longer. Please help!

Just found a solution to the problem with this post:
"Can you guys having problems check if the AppleAirPort2.kext is still present in your /System/Library/Extensions folder? It is an older Tiger-only AirPort driver that is no longer used on Leopard. You can simply delete it, or move it aside by changing the extension to something besides .kext. See if that fixes your problem."
I removed this file and without restarting, AirPort appeared again.

  • Airport problems after leopard update

    Hello, guys.
I need your support to solve a "mistery". I remember a similar post 4 or 5 months ago but in this case issue was solved with the next patch.
I have been installing several leopard updates and now I can't connect me to my wireless lan. Leopard cannot understand my password.
No problem if I want to connect me to unsecure wireless lan.
I think that is a problem with the password entry window code.
    Some kind of suggestion ?
    Thsnks in advanced.

  • HP B110a multifunction ceases to function after Hp Update

I have HP Photosmart B110a multifunction printer which ceases to work after applying "HP notification of Updates". Cannot print or access HP Solution Centre (nothing works). Only solution is to use the installation CD to completely uninstall the HP software & then reinstall. I prefer to always update software but never do for this B110a.
Family member with same B110a also had this problem today after inadvertantly updating, so I fixed as above.
Very time consuming. Could anybody inform me why this occurs & is there a solution. BTW I have stopped updates (as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike)

    Hi mookycat
Run the cd and select add a device. Should find the printer with the new IP address.
Another method would be to go to start, devices and printers, right click the printer, go to printer properties, select ports tab, select new port, click standard tcp/ip address, next, type in the ip address for the printer, next, finish. Make sure the printer is online.
    Hope that helps you out.

  • What happened to dictionary function after iOS8 update?

After  recent update to iOS8 I no longer have the ability to highlight a word and retrieve a definition via the dictionary on my iPad.

    Hi Marianne
I know the ACR update is just a few hours old, but I have not seen anyone else mention the problem you describe.  It certainly hasn't made any difference to my system.  Can we try and pin your problem down a bit?
    Photoshop version?
    Operating system?
Perhaps upload a screen grab of your entire workspace showing the Layers and History panels, and drag them out show all layers, and as much history as available.
Does this happen with all images? Have you restarted the computer as well as Photoshop?  Are you absolutely sure that Preferences was reset? (It sounds like you deleted the preferences file rather than use the start up method)
    Reset Preferences
Windows — Hold down Shift Ctrl Alt immediately after starting Photoshop
Mac — Hold down Shift Cmd Opt immediately after starting Photoshop

  • Nokia E51 not functional after Software update to ...

I am having a really huge problem here with my E51. After i updated the firmware to the 300.34.56 version, the phone now freezes and does not allow ny user input at all. Then the screen also flickers alot, preventing me from using the phone (making calls, reading & sending messages e.t.c)
I even re-installed the firmware (thinking that maybe i did it wrongly the first time) but the problem still persists.
Has anyone had such a  problem after updating to the 300.34.56 firmware version?
    Kindly help
    Thanks
    Mashooq

did you put any new apps on it ? if you remove the memory card is the issue the same? if yes i would suggest you take it to nokia care for evaluation of what the issue might be, i have not heard of such issue after update on your phone, tho it does not mean that it does not exist for some other users.

  • Time machine is non functional after last OS update

I am unable to back up my I mac. When I click on the TM button it brings up a prompt that says " You haven't selected a location for time machine backups". When i click "set up Time Machine" it brings up a new TM window that shows the TM is "off". When I click the option on the left that that says "select back up disc", it brings up a new window that has one option only "other Airport Time Capsule". If I click onto that it opens a new grey window with a globe on it and it says "no configured airport base stations have been found. Airport utility will continue searching". If I try to turn the TM to the on position it brings up the same window scenario described above. This worked fine since 2009 and with the last major OS update it went bad....
I was a pc guy before getting our macs and so this world is different, I have had NO problems with any of our macs since 2009, this is the first time and it started with the last OS update...our printer is not working either unless its hard wired to one of our 2 computers...again new issue since the last OS update. I have done a hard reboot on the Airport/TM and that didn't do anything. I wonder if it needs to be reloaded onto the IMAC, not really sure how to do that either.
Thanks for any help/consideration you could give. Peter

You need to do a full reset.. Yosemite wants to control and own everything.
    1. Full factory reset.
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    2. It will now show up in Airport Utility.
Redo the setup but do not accept apple recommended names.. use short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    3. Wireless should have WPA2 Personal with pure alphanumeric password.
    4. Your computer share name is well advised to be short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. (just remember your windows days.. apple is now using windows networking by default.. they began in Mavericks. when did you problems start.. oh yeah.. in mavericks.. hmm.. connected?? I think so!!)
    5. Make sure in network preferences for whatever connection you use IPv6 is set to link-local only.
    6. Manually mount the TC in finder if you still cannot connect in TM. Do this using top menu, Go, Connect to server.
Type in AFP://TCname.local (TCname is your new short name.. local is default domain).
Or AFP://TCIPaddress (eg 10.0.1.1 the IP you can find by the summary on the TC in airport utility).
Type in and save the password for disk access in your keychain.. this is important.
    7. If it stops the day after you set it up.. welcome to Yosemite.. reboot the TC.. make sure it is mounted in Finder and try again.
    8. Use a replacement backup utility.. eg Carbon Copy Cloner to a USB drive.. much more reliable.

  • Download/Update buttons non functional after iOS 6 update

Updated iPad 2 to iOS 6 tonight, initially I had the problem when app updates don't start and just hung. Restarted iPad and the updates appeared to have stopped. Went to update all apps again and the button did nothing. This is the same with all new app downloads/iTunes song purchases/individual app updates. The button does change from the price to "get single" or whatever, but the button just does absolutely nothing when clicked upon.
All occurring over wifi, I don't currently have the laptop the iPad is synced with me but will tomorrow.
Can anyone help me with this very frustrating problem?
I have tried restarting iPad, restarting all apps, signing in and out with my apple ID, nothing appears to work. I can't see any downloads hanging in iTunes.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).
iOS devices can only be restored with the current iOS version.
No one here has any way of knowing if a "fix" is in the works, but that would imply there is an iOS issue causing your problem, this is highly unlikely.  More likely, something from your backup is causing an issue or the device has a hardware failure.

  • Kernel Panic after Leopard update on Powerbook G4

I've updated my 15" Powerbook G4 to Leopard. Initially everything seemed ok (for about half an hour), but then I started to get Kernel Panics everytime my machine went to sleep.
It also sometimes didn't start up - I heard the start-up sound, but the screen stayed dark. After resetting the PRAM it would work again. I replaced the RAM, but the problem persisted.
I then thought it may be a hard disk problem, because when I booted from an external 10.5 or 10.4 disk, the problem was gone and my computer went to sleep without any problems.
So I ended up buying a new hard disk for my Powerbook, installed Leopard, and it indeed looked as if the problem was solved - for half a day. Because it re-occured after leaving my machine on overnight to allow spotlight to index the HD. The next morning, it wouldn't wake up from sleep mode (the white indicator light at the front also wasn't on), I restarted and the problem came back. Everytime my machine tries to go to sleep, or I put it to sleep, I get a kernel panic.
Any thoughts what this may be? I'd hate to have to go back to 10.4, but I also fear that it may be a hardware problem. Strange though that a replacement HD would fix it for a little while (or booting from an external HD).

    Hi Barry
Thank you for your help. You may give me too much credit for my hardware knowledge, though. I can replace RAM, but that's about it. Everything else is done by my hardware genius friend at work.
Nevertheless, I have now noticed that the problem seems to be specific for only one of my user accounts. Not surprisingly, the one I use most. None of my other accounts, including the admin account, are not affected. Wouldn't this argue against a hardware problem? Unless someone has a better idea, I may just have to delete this account and see if this will do the trick. Is there any way to painlessly migrate all the meat (keychain etc.) into a new account?
Thanks a bunch for any help.

  • Keyboard backlight not working correctly after leopard update

My mbp originally came with Tiger (10.4), when Leopard (10.5) was released I updated. The backlight for the keyboard works normally until I installed the 10.5.1 update. After 10.5.1 and all other updates the keyboard backlight no longer worked correctly. In low light conditions or while working in the dark I have to manually turn it on instead of it doing it automatically. Is this a bug or is there a way to fix it?

Yes, I have to cover the sensors with my hands in order for them to turn off when light is back on, otherwise they just stay on.

  • Disk permissions after leopard update software is installed

after installing osx 10.5 updates to 10.5.1 i got several suid warnings on disk permission verify which could not be fixed. i also got a lot of acl found but not expected messages for many files.
the only suid warning which apple tells me they are aware of is the one for apple remote desktop update. the question is why is that update available to computers which do not have apple remote desktop installed?
the other question i have is since this is a brand new imac which only has the leopard operating system installed, why do i get all of these suid and acl mesages when i run disk permissions verify. the repair permissions will not repair any of these files.

sorry for the delay in responding, but have decided to stay with tiger until the leopard software becomes more mature.
appreciate your response and my apologies for the delay in responding.

  • After Leopard update, my G4 thinks it's a G5 and I can't log in!!

    Hoping you can help:
I installed the latest software update on Friday, then when I restarted my Powerbook G4 I found myself with a login screen with my username and space for password (I'm usually logged in automatically). Entering my password sent me into a loop - ie, the blue screen started up but then a few seconds later I'd come back to the log-in screen (with Leopard purple background).
Took it to the Apple Genius bar this morning and they noticed that the login screen said Powerbook G5 (though I'd installed with the appropriate off-the-shelf Leopard system several months ago). He insructed me to do an Archive Reinstall off my Leopard disks. (They couldn't do it in the store as the san would have taken more than an hour).
The result: I now have a log-in screen that has my name, the screen still thinks I am a G5, but now when I enter my password it 'shakes' - meaning it's incorrect.
I'm mystified and don't know what to do.
    Can someone help?
    Thanks,
    Jennifer

hmm, something is seriously fubared there. one thing you can try is doing another archive and install (yes, it's a pain, I know) and choose the option NOT to preserve user settings. This should take you into the original setup screen and you'll have to create anew account. maybe that will help. the downside is that you'll loose your user settings but not the files. You old home directory will be located in the previous system folder and you'll have to manually move stuff from there to your new user.
BTW, have you tried [this link|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306840]? It was on the page I mentioned earlier. try that first.
