SSH Tunnel to an Oracle SQL Server

Hi all,
I am attempting to set up an ssh tunnel from my local machine to an Oracle SQL server operating on a remote computer, and use it to run a perl script to extract things from that database.
My question is, do I need to have an SQL client on the local machine for this to work? The remote computer does not have the Oracle DBD installed, while the local machine does (hence running the script on the local computer), but will the DBD hand of requests correctly through the ssh tunnel to the SQL server on the remote machine without a client on the local one?

The data access is all happening on the Oracle machine right? Then no, all your local machine needs is an ssh client - that's it. After that all processing is running on the server.

I tried this using Oracle Provider for OLEDB (the one that supplied by Oracle Client) and Crystal Reports 9. you can drag the column into designer but the image does not appear in preview.
I guess it's because CR does not recognized it as image, and there are no information that the blob data is an image at all.

Extraction of data from Planning and load it into Oracle/SQL server (RDBMS)

Hi All,
ODI can extract data from Oracle/SQL server RDBMS and load it into Hyperion planning, but I wanted to know if it is possible to extract data from Hyperion Planning through ODI and load it into Oracle or SQL server RDMBS i.e the other way round.
Kindly let me know if that is possible or not,If yes then please let me know what is the exact process to achieve this through ODI.

Yes this can be done. Remember that Planning data is actually stored in Essbase so the Knowledge module you will need to use is LKM Essbase to SQL (DATA)

Issues using Oracle SQL server Developer migration work bench

Hi all,
We are trying to migrate the application databases from SQL server 2000 to Oracle 10g using Oracle SQL Developer 1.2.1.32.13:
Following is the list of issues that we faced while trying out this migration on dev environment.
1. The data migration was successful for only around 90 tables out of the total 166 tables present. No error message was logged for the rest of the tables but still it was completed.
2. Some of the tables which had got the data inserted did not have the full data. Only some of the rows were inserted for these tables. Error message was logged only for few of the rows and not all.
3. Few error messages were logged which said problems about “Inserting ' ' into column <tablename>.<columnname>”. There was no such constraint in the target database that the particular column can not be null or can not have only a space. Please check the logs for the same error messages.
4. The status box at the end of migration had shown only 3 errors.
5. The total data for migration was around 500MB. The time taken for migration was around 75 minutes. Are there any optimization techniques that will improve the performance?
Please note that there were no Foreign Key references for the source schema or target schema.
Any pointers/info/resolutions related to above mentioned issues will be much useful for us.

Hi Adam,
There are 2 sets of scripts created for you.
1) For SQL Servers BCP to dump out the data to dat files
2) For Oracles SQL*Loader to load the dat files
You run the SQL Server BCP scripts on the machine with SQL Server.
The dat files will be dumped out on that server.
You can then move the dat files to your Oracle server.
Then run the Oracle SQL*Loader scripts to load the dat files into Oracle.
Give it a go and follow the doc and viewlets.
Your Questions:
So the datadump from the source location would be saved on my local disk?it will be saved on the same machine you run the bcp scripts from. Usually the same machine SQL Server is on, because you require SQL Server BCP tool.
So once it is migrated to the destination database will that dump be created automatically? Or do I need to modify the script to take care of this?I dont know what you mean by this, hopefully above clears things up.
The only modifications you need to make to the scripts are adding in the databasename username password servername. These are outlined in the scripts themselves. I would want to do something fancy like dump the dat files to a different directory, then you can modify the scripts, but you should understand what they do first.
Most people would have 500MB of space on their discs , so I can see the problem creating these dat files . The same goes for your 30 GB database.
I hope this helps, but as always you wont get a good idea of how it works until you give it a go.

Cross database join Oracle - SQL server date column - nQSError: 46008

I am using OBIEE 10.1.3.4.2 and
I am able to make cross database join between Oracle and SQL server using varchar columns, but I am getting this error:
nQSError:22024-A comparison is being carried out between noncompatible type when I try to make "foreign key" join between two tables (one from Oracle, second from SQL Server) using number columns (INT, DOUBLE...). It is strange, but I when I make "complex join" on physical layer no error is thrown and everything works fine.
But I am not able to make join between tables using Date column. Column in Oracle table has DATE datatype, column in SQL server tables has datetimeoffset(7) datatype (example: 2011-07-19 13:14:22.2032605 +02:00). So I tried to cast datetimeoffset(7) to date datatype using "convert(DATE,HappenedOn,120)" - this returns me 2011-07-19 . In this format, BI can show converted date column, I can make filter using this date column, but I am not able to make physical join with Oracle table using this column
Answer using data from both joined tables gives me this error:
[nQSError: 46008] Internal error: File .\DataType\SUKeyCompare.cpp, line 875. (HY000)
Do you have some tips, how to solve this "bug"?

Using ssh tunneling to admin OS X server on a far-away LAN

My Mac OS X Server 10.4 box is behind a gateway (dns, dhcp, nat, ipfw) box on a LAN. My workstation (the one I will be administering from) is on a different LAN. I don't want to open holes in my firewall, but I have an account on the firewall (I am the admin). I want to use ssh tunneling to administer the server. I have successfully done this with my old webstar box (which the OSX Server is replacing).
Is it as simple as adding a port designation when I "Add Server" to the Server Admin and Workgroup Server? example:
localhost:8331 or localhost:8625
(8331 is the local end of the tunnel which ends up as 331 to the OSX server, and same for 8625) The OSX server doesn't care because it see the connections from the ports that it expects. I'm just wondering about configuring the admin apps which are on a different LAN.

You don't. Not with Putty or an SSH connection. Just share a folder from the PC and access it via SMB from the Mac to access it.

How can I access the oracle/sql server jdbc driver class files from my cust

I have a war file in which I have custom DataSource i.e mypackage.Datasource class. Its basically the need of my application. In this class we connect to datasource and link some of our programming artifacts .
I have deployed the oracle jdbc driver and deploy my application as ear with datasources.xml in the meta inf file. Inspite of that my code fails to load the jdbc driver classes.
Here is the extract of the code :

Class.forname fails in this case. I can see the ojdbc5.jar the driver jar in usr\sap\CE1\J00\j2ee\cluster\bin\ext\ojdbc5 . I even put the ojdbc.jar in web-inf/lib and application lib but does not help at all. Hope I have explained my problem clearly.
I deployed the jdbc driver in the name of ojdbc5 .
I am stuck here. It will be great help if anyone can help me in this. Thanks in advance.

You can access the database from your Java portlet, just like from any other Java/JSP environment. Yes, you can use JDBC, as well as BC4J.
The Discussion Forum portlet was built using BC4J, take a look at it's source to see how it was done.
Also, check out Re: BC4J Java portlet anyone?, it contains a lot of useful information too.

Oracle 9i on LINUX Transparent Gateway for SQL Server

Does anybody know if there is a Transparent Gateway available for Oracle 9i on LINUX to connect to SQL Server? I have run the installer and cannot seem to find the install options for any Transparent Gateways. I am familiar with their location in the universal installer as I have installed the Oracle/SQL Server Transparent Gateway with Oracle in WinNT. Perhaps Transparent Gateways for Oracle/LINUX are not available?

I have the same issue - we want to upgrade our 9.2 to 10g Linux, and need to maintain connectivity to some legacy sqlserver databases. I can't find any mention of tg4msql for linux. What gives? Anyone know the answer to this? thanks, michael

Connection between Oracle 9i and MS Sql Server 2005

Hey Guys,
I am hoping to create materialized view of data on a small sql server box using our oralce 9i cluster. Anyway, i have done this with mysql using the standard odbc dirvers and a dblink, but i am having trouble finding an odbc driver for the connection from oracle to sql server. So, i was wondering if you guys know of a free, or cheap odbc driver, or have a suggestion of an alternative connection method.
PS: i have see: Heterogeneous Services Agents and Transparent gateways floating around, so are these options that don't need the odbc drivers and are free?

So you can be sure that every doc that you get on MS website will say that SQL server is better, every doc on Oracle website will say that Oracle is better. Every doc on other websites will say that better DB either is:
1) DB that has payed for the reserach paper
2) DB that was mostly used by the researchers
So of course you should be very cautious about each paper you get.

DDL Replicate Oracle 10gR2 to SQL Server 2005

I have configured OGG and it had succeed to have DML transaction from Oracle to SQL Server.
now i'm configuring DDL replication but have problem when i tried to start replicat program in SQL Server 2005, the status is abended.
the log shows as below,

in Installation guide there is no explicit line that explain "DDL replication is not supported for SQL Server."
but now i know, thanks for that.
i have another question, so DDL replication only support between the same database like Oracle to Oracle, SQL Server to SQL Server etc. ?

Both the script files(oracle/sql server) contains scripts to create tables, create views and create functions.

You can use SQL Plus for Oracle. You can have a C# program that issues commands for scripts for table, views, triggers creation and the whole 10 yards to SQL Plus,

I started writing a program to use SQL Plus to run the scripts, but cI ame to the conclusion that it was a waste of my time.
A tool called OSM, an Oracle, tool gives a list of script files that need to be run do to a change in a script file based on file timestamp. You can copy the list doing a copy/past operation and drop it into SQL Plus's Command line, and SQL Plus runs the
scripts.
For MS SQL Server, you have this, which you can run from a C# program too.

I would consider using the above from a C# program a waste of time too.
I look at it this way. If the user doesn't have database admin experience and know how to use DB admin tools, then they have no business doing anything with a database - period.
BTW, the Invoke statement in VB or C# will run SQL Plus or SQL Server command line tool.

Trying to migrate SQL Server 2000 to Oracle 10g.

I´m trying to migrate from Sql Server 2000 to Oracle 10g and I got some troubles.
I have connected both databases with my Oracle Sql Server, after that I went to the Menu--> Migrate--> Fast Migration and then fill all the steps necesary.
I can see the repository`s table at the oracle schema but after that the Sql Developer hang at the point "capture". I let the tool work for 2 hours and nothing to do. It´s not a hughe db so could be done faster.
May I miss something?.

I also have similar issue when trying to migrate from MS SQL 2005 to oracle 10g.
I use the SQL Developer Version 2.1.0.63.
First, I tried to use 'Quick Migration' then it created repository then stop there with error message
"Error ocurred during capture: ORA-01400: cannot insert NULL into ("DDHCOWNER"."MD_PROJECTS"."ID")"
Then, try manual way to capture SQL server, but some how it doesn't work. It just refresh IDE and stop.
Before this activity, I tried to migrate MS SQL 2005 using 'Quick Migration' and it works. But this time I have to do it on another DB then this happened.
So I re-try the previous connection then encountered the same to all.
Thus, please kindly help to advice how to solve this problem.
