Stacks disappear if pick is rejected

I just found out that if you give the current pick in a stack a rating of reject and then click outside of the stack then it vanishes.
The only way I could get the stack back or see any of the images in the stack again was by using undo to remove the rating of reject.
Just a heads up for people to be careful about this.
While I'm here, does anyone know a way or rating the current pick, when you are in stack viewing mode? Even if I use the contextual menu it rates the image in the stack I am comparing it to and not the pick which I had clicked on.

I've noticed this too. You can see the rejects by clicking on the search box and sliding the stars slider to the left. It only disappears, though, after you've clicked off the stack.
The only way that I could mark the pick as reject in stack mode was by promoting a rejected image. If it's already the pick, demote it, reject it, and promote it again. Actually isn't so bad once you get the hang of the key commands.
One other trick for those with two monitors. I wanted to be able to view both the pick and the other stack image two up in the second monitor. I finally found that choosing the "Project Management" layout button at the top will put the viewer fully on the second screen.

  • Why did my Application Stack Disappear after I downloaded an OS update?

My Application Stack disappeared after I downloaded an OS update.  I can get it back as a folder on the dock but not the Application Stack. I am relatively new to Macs so maybe I missed something in the setup.

Right-click or Control-click on the Applications folder icon in the Dock. A popup menu will open. Select Stack from the Display As section.

  • Where are the Pick/Unpick/Reject Flags stored?

    Hello all,
On LR4.0 I went through the process of creating a new catalog and importing the 3.6 cat with the proverbial error at the end of the update and have been working with that cat in LR4.  I've added around 300 new images to that 4.0 cat and have done some Pick/Reject flagging as well as Star Ratings.
I've just moved to the LR4.1 RC1 and successfully upgraded my original LR3.6 catalog without any errors. Now I have added/synchronized my LR4.1 RC1 cat to add in place the folders of images I've added that have the Pick/Reject flags.  I see the Star Ratings but not any of the Pick/Reject flags on those folders.  I do see the flags on the images that were updated with the catalog though.
Where are the Pick/Unpick/Reject Flags stored?  In the catalog only?  In the sidecar XMP file?  Both? Doing a Ctrl-S doesn't seem to make a difference.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

  • BT stack disappears after restart.

In a Portege M200 I downloaded the toshiba BT stack last version (3.10). Everything is ok during installation. BT devices are working properly (at least the headset). When I Power on again the pc, all BT stack files disappear(seems correctly unistalled but I do not know why).
For your information after the restart the "C:/program files/Toshiba/Bluetooth Toshiba Stack" folder does not exists anymore.
    Any help is wellcome.
    Dario

Hi, I had the same problem - I had installed bluetooth stack, it requires restart of my machine and...stack was not there (not in Start Menu, Not in Programs).
I tried several times, I could even run Bluetooth Stack before restart (but there was no possibility to use it), but always after retart program just disapear.
Finally I have decided to reinstal Windows (please note, t previously I had also quite fresh WindowsXP instalation).
Now it works, except that I can not connect to HID (mouse, keybord, remote control from phone) and cannot establish connection to headset - I have never used it before, therefore I do not know whether this is possible with my Satelite 5100-501?

  • Contents of Stacks disappear!? Why?

    Hi,
I was thinking maybe some of you guys where experiencing something similar.
Sometimes, when my iMac (new, Aluminum) has been on for a while I click on the "stacks" on the dock, and the stack appears to open, but all you see is a "shadow" where the name of the file should be and you see NO icons.
If the stack is too big (and actually expands as a window) when you open it, its fine. To solve the issue, I have to restart the iMac.
    Anyone? Any ideas?

I get that problem from time to time.
Some part of the dock stops rendering things generally and I have also noticed the bitmap that the dock displays disappear.
You don't need a full restart though. Logout and login again and the dock will restart.

  • IPad "misbehaves" when used with a MultiSIM - picks up/rejects phone calls

    Hello Cupertino,
iPad 3G misbehaves when used e.g. with a MultiSIM card of T-Mobile Germany.
It is said to pick up phone calls and actively rejects them. Thus the "Main" Mobile Phone (e.g. the iPhone) will ring ONCE then the iPad will pick up and reject the call. (On T-Mobile Network, one cannot disallow phone calls for a specific MultiSIM, all Phones of the same number will ring simultaneously).
This is a really serious and embarassing bug, please fix it with next OS version.
    Cheers,
    Thomas

No! this is a "bug", because the ipad is connecting via the sim-card in an incorrect way. From day one on Apple always is pressing the fact that the iPad is a "data"-device ONLY and NOT a "phone"-device.
There is no intention of Apple to make the ipad do anything else as "connecting to the internet". That's why there is no textmessage app, no voicemail, no phonestuff on the the ipad. That's perfectly ok! But considering this the iPad misbehaves when connecting to a gprs/umts network because it is connecting showing itself as a PHONE AND DataDevice instead of DATA-ONLY.
THAT IS WRONG, because this automatically triggers the telcom provider to sent voice and messaging connections to this device.
Proof: On a jailbroken iPad it is possible to simply switch the device to the correct CGCLASS="CP" setting. With this setting the iPad only connects as a datadevice (e.g. like a usb-umts-stick) and doesn't answer any incoming non-data-connections.
BUT: I don't want a jailbreak! If want a correct working iPad.
And last but not least: the multi-sim-option (meaning more simcards under the same number) is totaly legitimate and is part of the usagespecs for telecom-networks. It is working perfectly well if (yeah, IF) every device connecting to the network identifies itself correctly with its capabilities.
If a device identifies itself as a phone and it actually isn't, then this device has a serious bug and is not correctly configured to be used in a mixed telcom network. Just because "normaly" everybody uses only one simcard, it is no reason NOT to stick to specs.
This is just sloppy work when porting the iPhone OS to the iPad. Simply forgotten! No big deal, but fix it, because Apple is "killing" a whole generation of german t-mobile users (all iphone contracts older than ~12 months can use their dataplan with free multisimcards from t-mobile on different devices!).

  • Self-created stacks disappear and can't find folders in Finder

Hello, a few times now I've lost stacked folders I've created in the docks. I haven't been able to figure out what's happening exactly, but it seems to have something to do with the desktop display. Most recently I went into Display in System Preferences to run a calibration. Without clicking on anything, the display resolution changed (which of course I changed back), my desktop image was gone (again, no problem to fix) and two question marks replaced the stack folders I created in the dock. (My Documents and Downloads folders were not affected.)
After looking through some discussion topics, I created another stack folder (yes, to the right side of the divide) in the dock just to test things out. I went into the User file. I see the Documents and Downloads folders in there, but not the stacks I created.
So--this is because the stack is just a shortcut, right? Ok, I can get that. However! The stuff that was in those other folders I created is totally gone. So where WAS the contents of those stack folders before the folders were lost? After I dragged the folders down to the dock I deleted the orig folders off the desktop to clean things up--not realizing they were short cuts and thinking this was a great way to keep my desktop nice and clean.
Because of a separate issue I stupidly emptied the trash before trying to completely solve this problem. So, I'll never know if I would've been able to retrieve those lost items. More importantly, I want to understand how this works so I can prevent this from happening again. It seems to me like these folders are so fragile. Therefore, of limited use. If that's the case, fine, it just seemed so nice to be able to put folders down there instead of hanging on the desktop.
    Thanks!

Yes, they are shortcuts, or aliases as we call 'em on the Mac. If you delete the original, and it sounds like you did, they no longer point to anything and once the Dock wakes up to that you will see a question mark where your stack was. You can create aliases yourself anywhere, or in the Dock or Sidebar, and then delete the aliases, and the original folder and its contents are unchanged. That's not what you did. You created an alias and then deleted the original.
What you should do is create folders inside your home folder, rather than on the Desktop, then drag those folders into the Dock. You will then have a tidy Desktop, and quick access to the folders from the Dock.

  • Stacks lose pick if put in an album and then undone

If you put a stack into an album and then undo the move, the stack loses its pick if it's not the first image in the stack.
I just lost a lot of work by moving a couple dozen stacks into an album and then hitting Command-Z.
Has anyone else experienced this behavior? (Aperture 1.5.2)

I am a little confused by exactly what happpens when you are doing this - the stack pick is always the first image of the stack.
Are you referring to Album Picks for the album you have moved a stack into? Then it would make more sense to have those picks go away.
I did try changing the master pick in a stack, dragging it into an album, and then undoing the move into album - my stack stayed ordered as I had put it. Can you give an example of how exactly you add stacks to the album and how the picks are being set?

  • When attempting to stack certain photos they disappear

Why do some photos when stacked together disappear, all of them, and others do not?

This has happened to me a couple of times too. I haven't noticed it since updating to 3.2, but I haven't been doing a lot of "stacking" since it came out. What version of Aperture are you using?
When you press Cmd-K, and the stack disappears, try switching to another project or library view and then re-enter the project. That worked for me. Obviously that's a work-around to what is (or was, if it's been addressed) probably a glitch. The good news is though that Aperture isn't deleting your images when you create the stack. It just forgets they're there for a second.

  • Alternate picks with same stack in different albums?

I've got a question I haven't been able to find an answer for. Say I have a stack of two images: one is the color original, one is the black & white conversion. Then I have an album called "Black & White picks" and another called "Color picks".
If I move the stack into the "Color picks" album, and the color image is selected as the pick, there's no problem there. But then over in the "Black & White picks" album, the color image will show up as the pick. Not good.
Is there any way to have alternate picks with a given stack in different albums? Or do I just need to unstack the photos and put them in the albums individually (this is a pain, because I'd like to keep the images together).
    Thanks,
    Chris

That is exactly what the "Stacks->Set Album Pick" command is for. Inside of any album (even web galleries or a book) use that command (shortcut Cmd-"|") to set some other image in the stack as a pick for that album.
Inside of a smart album such a concept makes no sense, but you can have smart albums that are able to "peer" into stacks and pull images out that are not the current pick. But be warned - dragging stuff out of smart albums that are thusly found can be a problem as any images that are not the current stack pick will not be found in the dragged-to album!

  • Sorting of images within a stack

When working with stacks some strange things happen:
    - When trying to duplicate one image out of the stack into an album the whole stack is moved to the album. When I than delete this stack in the album the order of the images of the same stack in my projects is changed.
    - When rejecting images within a stack my rejected images are not automatically moved to the rejected images folder. Instead these images stay in the stack even so they are marked as rejected.
    - When sorting images within a stack by using different ratings and than trying to limit the image view by showing for instance only images with 3 stars or more nothing happens. Also showing rejected images only does not work within a stack. Instead showing images by rating is applied to the whole project and not only the stack
Do I do something wrong or is this a known apperture bug?
    MBP   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

David, your understanding (use) of stacks is causing a conflict. The whole idea is basically to group a series of similar images and choose the best one of that series, called the Pick. Then, within that series you can rank those images in an order of Pick to next best, and so on. You can view stacks open or closed - when closed, the Pick is the one on top.
Here's some info from the Help Menu that will help answer your questions:
Note: When you place a stack in a book album or web gallery or web journal album, Aperture displays the stack pick. If you drag a stacked image that is not the stack pick into the book or web gallery or web journal album, Aperture reminds you to select the stack pick. If you don’t want to place the pick in the album, but want to use a different version from within the stack, select the version you want and then make it the album pick by choosing Stacks > Set Album Pick.
    Dragging Stacks
You can drag an entire stack to a new location, and you can drag specific images within a stack to a new location. When a stack is closed, dragging the stack moves the entire stack. When a stack is open, you can drag individual versions to new locations in the Browser. You can also drag images into a stack. If you drag a stacked image into a different project, however, the entire stack moves to the new location.
If you still want to be able to use a stacked image as you have stated, then take that image out of the stack, split the stack, or create a version of the image and remove it from the stack.
Take a quick refresher through the help menu - it will give you some further details and ideas so you can accomplish exactly what you need to do.
    Hope that helps!!

  • Yes Im a newbie - Why cant I stack? Grrrr

Ok I am embracing the help manual - stroking it gently and still having an issue. I made a catalog from my shoot - 785 images of a four group family shoot. I made collections to organize the different locations we shot the groups at. Now I want to stack the different groups by family within that collection.so I have 4 stacks - 1 for each family. So, I am in grid view on the library tab. I ctrl click (yes Im pc - used to be bi - but shhh) to select 20 or so images out of 200+ within the collection. I go to Photo>stacking>and the next flyout is greyed out and wont let me select. Ctrl g also does not work.
What in the world can i be doing wrong???

Oh I also flagged everything beforehand to picks and rejects then filtered to pick and unpicked. Stacking is not available regardless of the the images I select - grrrrrr - it must be me right???

  • Filter by Flag and Stacks

In my lightroom library, I have multiple stacks of shots that are similar. I also use the Pick and Reject flags with the individual photos in each of these stacks, and I like to make use of filtering by pick for developing. However it seems that a stack will only appear if the top image in the stack is flagged as a pick when I filter by flag. Is this a bug or an intentional design feature?

It's intentional. A stack hides the images below the top image from being found. This is how I expected it to work, but others have reported it as a bug so my expectations were not universal. To me, this is pretty much the whole point of a stack, but others use them differently.

  • Version Automatically on Top of Stack?

I may be dreaming, but I seem to recall in the early days of Aperture 3 (obviously not long ago), that whenever I created a version, by cropping, adjusting, etc, that new version was automatically placed on top of the stack.
That was very useful since when I edit a photo, I consider the edited version as my new number 1.
Now, however, the new versions seem to be placed at the end of the stack, requiring me to move them to the top.
Anyone have any comments on whether or how new versions can be set to automatically be placed on the top of a stack?
    Thanks.

Gary -- Thanks for the numbers. Numbers are good to have.
PS I've also been using Stacks for grouping bracketed (and panoramic) sets. But I've also been using them for grouping adjusted versions. It doesn't seem to be quite working out - for me - so I might have to revise that.
My experience (limited, but aware) has been that, for each of the many grouping or binning functionalities in Aperture, I am always best served by choosing one and only one purpose. Your use of Stacks illustrates the problem: are Stacks for
. making picks among burst or bracketed shots?
. grouping panoramas and HDR singles (etc.)?
. grouping development versions of an image?
Stacks provide a sophisticated binning functionality (group, rank, collapse/expand) that is applicable to several tasks. Unfortunately, there is one and only one type of Stack, and no (easy) way to distinguish them. (One can easily imagine three kinds of Stacks, one each for the grouping needs listed above.) Am I right in assuming that this is the problem you imply with "+It doesn't seem to be quite working out+"?
For me, helping to winnow my photographs is the most important function I can assign to Stacks. I stack very similar shots, select the best of the Stack and promote it to the "Pick", and then go through the Project (I use one Project for each shoot) with Stacks collapsed and select the best among the Picks and the non-stacked shots.
(My "flower bed" is, from subsoil to bloom:
    . Rejects
    . All non-rejects
    . Stack Picks and non-rejects
. Best of Project ("Selects", which are Project-specific)
. Selected for printing, export, publication, sale, etc. (Selected Selects -- which I move to Albums)
That leaves several things to address: how to handle bracketed shots, panorama shots, HDR shots, focus stacking shots, and, not least, Versions.
Shots bracketed in order to increase the odds of a proper exposure are easy: they get treated just like other Stacks. Stack 'em, pick the best, move on.
The other groupings I deal with in an "extra-computational" way: I remember that this stack is for a panorama (for instance). Then when I create the panorama I import it and put it in the Stack with the shots which comprise it, and make it the Pick. The "extra-computational" part is, clearly, a kludge, but a livable-with one.
Version-stacking muddies this tremendously (especially when the version is already in what I might call a "Picking Stack"). *I actually think that Aperture should add a specific and visually identified method of Version-stacking separate from the existing Stacks.* Every image whether inside or outside a user-defined Stack should have it's own Version stack. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but all Version of an image must be in the same Project, no?)
If I care to Pick two Versions in a Stack (either a Picking Stack or a Versions Stack), I split the Stack.
What is your Stacks workflow, and how might you revise it?
I'm also very curious about other's use of color labels. I find them queer, due to the fact that any image can have +one and only one+ color label. There is no set of useful identifiers I can think of which has 8 non-overlapping bins (I assume I am missing something terribly obvious). I tried using colors for different sets of identifiers, but failed at each because there were always images to which I wanted to assign two colored labels. I've ended up using the colors to assign steps along the progression of image development (Develop!, Developing (some adjustments applied but not done), Problem, Developed, Redevelop!, Redeveloped, Abandon, Not yet flagged).
This works well for me, because I am able to maintain separate identifier sets for development progression and image rating (I use the built-in stars). I can have good images not yet developed, developed images down-rated, images waiting to be rated or developed, and so on. What do you do?
Need I apologize for the ramble? I really want to set up a workable system that I then won't have to worry about for a couple of years and tens of thousand of images. Thanks for reading and any replies you might make.

I find that if I do that, the parts in the stack all get merged together with no way to expand them (ie the triangle you would click on to expand the stack disappears).
I believe this is a bug, and wonder if anyone else has encountered it?
