Stand-alone (slow) boot

Hi, I've got Arch installed on a R50p thinkpad.
Yesterday I booted stand-alone (no network cable attached) and I notices the boot pausing long on the "starting network".
Can this be tweaked? Can the "boot process" sence that there is no cable attached so you don't have to send the dhcp-client on a ghost-hunt.
Or is there a boot-parameter I can use. An extra lilo-entry dedicated for a quick stand-alone boot.

Solved. It was another "it's all covered in Arch, just find out how" lesson for me.  Just activate the network-profiles as described here: "http://quiet.unixcorps.org/?p=5"
So I can boot "standalone" now. This triggers a next problem: In my rc.local I've added this
/usr/bin/ntpdate ntp.xs4all.nl
Right! I don't want that when I boot standalone, so I've got to  code this within a conditional block....
My solutution would be to grep the output of ifconfig and look for 'eth0'. If not found not execute the ntpdate.
But.... I'm sure there is a more elegant solution. Any ideas?

  • Flash Player 10 Stand-alone Slow in Fullscreen Mode

Hi, I have a project that has to run fullscreen (dont want to see border etc.. - but not necessary to scale)
    stage.displayState = StageDisplayState.FULL_SCREEN;
    stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.NO_SCALE;
when the project is running in this way - even with NO-scale it becomes really slow - as soon as I exit the fullscreeen state (pressing escape key) - the flash interactive demo runs much faster. _ I do use a large mp4 video (1280x720) in background with graphics on top - I am not scaling the stage at all though - just want black border around - Anyone had a issue with this???
Tried diff. settings with hardware on of etc...

did a bit more trawling around the web and found this solution if you still need it:
Fix: Turn off hardware acceleration in Flash Player settings.
    1. After launching your projector fullscreen, press the escape key to run in windowed mode (since the sluggish performance will also affect your flash player settings window).
    2. Right-click in the window and select "Settings..."
    3. Click on the Display tab (left-most tab).
    4. Uncheck "Enable hardware acceleration
    5. Close & restart your projector.
Don't know if this is related to video drivers, OS, hardware, etc. but this solution worked great for me.

  • Cannot install Applcations in Stand-Alone Media image

Since updating from SCCM 2012 R2 to CU3 i have not been able to get our Stand-Alone media to work.
The Task Sequence is running fine until it gets to the install of the SCCM client. The installation of the client runs and then it restarts and then it runs it again, but when the task is done it goes to the login screen of Windows and ignores all the steps
which comes after the client install.
I have put in some alerts in order to find out exactly where is fails and the alert which runs prior to the client install is shown but the alert immediately after the install is never run.
I am beginning to supect that the client install is failling.
I have updated the package on the DP wihthout success.

    Hi Martin
Could you try adding a delay in the task sequence after the reboot, I have experienced a number of problems with SCCM 2012 R2 and reboots in task sequences. Microsoft Premier Support recommend creating a 5 minute delay. A shorter one may resolve the problem,
I would recommend trying this first.
The other thing to check is how are you preparing you boot media are you using a usb, if so is it formatted to NTFS or FAT32, I would always recommedn NTFS

  • Has anyone got the QT stand alone installer to work?

OK, Has anyone got the QT stand alone installer to work that has a problem getting IT6 to work also?
You can look at my original thread and see what I've been through: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=262511&tstart=0
and now am stuck with an old version of QT and no version of IT! Can't update iPod, can't do crap. How slow can Apple be to fixing whatever bug is in IT6?! It's obvious that alot of people are having trouble and many of us are having the exact same or similar problems. Apparently a call to support is no help.
    Mark

I didget QT stand alone to install. I had the error -3 message. I unistalled itunes and quicktime. Then I reinstalled using my orginal ipod disc. I then was asked to upgrade to ipod 6 or something. Which I did. Still got the error -3. Then I got the QT stand alone to install by it self and every thing works great now. There was some thing stating if I wanted to "Unistall QT for windows" I said yes. There were some error associated with removing "QT for Windows" during the install but after that it works great. It took something like 20 min. for it to download when it took itunes only 7 min. to download earlier.

  • Export from iMovie to stand-alone DVD hard drive

A key consideration is the amount of free space on your boot hard drive. You will probably need a minimum of 15 to 20 GB to complete your project in iDVD. If you will have this amount of free space after copying over the files, go ahead.
BTW, if you plan on making several copies, make your first 'burn' to a disk image on your hard drive (it's an option under 'File' if I remember correctly).
Verify the disk image with Apple's DVD Player and then burn the copies you need with Apple's Disk Utility. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42724 and http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006

  • Stand alone client for remote EJB corba error

Regarding problem below, I've checked System env variables
that weblogic server is using for CORBA classes:
    javax.rmi.CORBA.UtilClass=weblogic.iiop.UtilDelegateImpl
    org.omg.CORBA.ORBSingletonClass=weblogic.corba.orb.ORB
    org.omg.CORBA.ORBClass weblogic.corba.orb.ORB
    javax.rmi.CORBA.PortableRemoteObjectClass=weblogic.iiop.PortableRemoteObjectDelegateImpl
But these are server classes and not found in wlclient.jar and wljmsclient.jar. What classes should be used for client? What needs to be set in order to get successful remote RMI/EJB call to weblogic server?
    Original post:
I have a stand alone spring client for simple stateless session EJB deployed on weblogic 9.2. I'm using spring (jdk 1.5) to call this remote EJB and the only way I can succeed is to have full weblogic.jar in my bootstrap classpath. Otherwise I get corba error:
CORBA BAD_PARAM 0 No; nested exception is:
org.omg.CORBA.BAD_PARAM: vmcid: 0x0 minor code: 0 completed: No
Interestingly, within same client I have JMS call to weblogic JMS and that fails if weblogic.jar is in boot classpath. Getting rid of weblogic.jar from boot classpath works if I have wlclient.jar and wljmsclient.jar in regular classpath (as per weblogic docs). I would think that for stand alone client all I would need is to weblogic client jars, why should I need to have full weblogic.jar?
I can't get those work together with same classpath. I wonder if anybody has some pointers and/or advice. I was looking to set system parameters for corba for weblogic client that maybe could help:
    org.omg.CORBA.ORBClass
    org.omg.CORBA.ORBSingletonClass
    javax.rmi.CORBA.UtilClass
    javax.rmi.CORBA.StubClass
    javax.rmi.CORBA.PortableRemoteObjectClass
But I can't find definitive answer.
    Regards,

I'm stuck exactly with the same issue while trying to port my application from weblogic to jboss.
I tried to specify different ORB implementations (JacORB, OpenORB) for jvm option org.omg.CORBA.ORBClass, but JBoss couldn't get them instantiated. Native Sun implementation which is used in JBoss by default and can be instantiated, apparently is not fully compatible with weblogic security module.
So did you manage to find out the solution?

It takes 44 seconds from first hitting the power button to my desktop appearing, it's not until around 22 seconds that anything even appears on my screen and the POST process starts so I don't think this is Windows related etc? I have tried with and without RAPID mode on my SSD and strangely it's actually 2secs quicker with RAPID OFF, either way 44 seconds is extremely slow for Windows 8 on an SSD?!
Worth noting that I had the exact same slow boot times while on my previous non EVO SSD and Windows 7 on this exact PC, have now just updated to Windows 8.1 on a brand new SSD but still have slow boot so guessing its something BIOS or MOBO related?
I've posted a video in the hope that maybe the LED indicator on the mobo might help someone point me in the right direction?

I will of course unplug all but the mouse and keyboard and time it again, but I do think I've already tried that in the past.

My system takes ~15 secs from Power button to desktop display (I'm booting from a somewhat slow Seagate Sata 2 320GB drive)--of course stuff is still loading at this point in the background.  My Windows 8.1 Start up-sequence boot timer says ~12 secs--but I don't think that is right and think it's cheating a wee bit...  Anyway, just looking at this stuff here's what stands out to me:
*You don't need the CD/DVD device ahead of your Windows boot drive in the boot order.  I only do that when I specifically have to boot from DVD for some reason,  which isn't that often.  By knocking back the DVD drive in the boot order it shaves maybe a couple of secs since there's no check for bootable DVD disk done before the boot is handed off to your really fast boot drive--and hey, if you *do* have a DVD disk just sitting in there that you don't want to boot from (this is my situation far more than I need to boot from the DVD drive)--that can take a couple more seconds, I think.  Where it really costs you boot time is when you have a bootable disk in the DVD drive that you don't want to boot from...  The "....hit any key to boot from DVD" will maybe 8-10 seconds to your boot.  Best policy: Don't put the DVD drive first in the boot order.  This one is minor, though,  compared to the next one:
*Your list of start-up programs is roughly 3x longer than mine...  I can see there are several programs running in your boot sequence that are entirely unnecessary in getting your machine up and properly booted--and every one of those unnecessary proggy's takes time to load through--during the boot process.  Most of those programs will easily run after boot when you need them to run--they just don't need to be run at boot-up.  Try disabling a bunch of them selectively until you get the reduction in boot time you're looking for.  I just checked my boot sequence in the 8.1 task manager...I have 11 programs in the sequence BUT...8 (eight) of them are disabled...!  They have nothing material to do with my boot so why should I let them clog up the boot process? I think you can make big time gains there. Another waste of boot time is stuff like QT task--you can update manually whenever you want after you boot--doesn't need to clog up the boot process, imo. You'll be surprised by how much you can excise from that program list without noticing it except in faster boots. (I don't run MSI fast boot, either.)
You are certainly right, though--your boot shouldn't be taking nearly so long.  Fortunately, it appears there's a lot your can do about it..!  Oh, yea--take AVG and shove it through the nearest window...  Be kind to yourself.  In 8.1, Defender is more powerful than MSE in 7 and Vista and XP, and MSE is not only great at protection, it also has a very light footprint and is the very antithesis of AVG in terms of being the sort of invasive, layered, resource hog that AVG is (at least, in my experience.)  He who travels light travels best, etc...

  • MSI X99S GAMING 7 - slow booting; HDD aren´t recognized in BIOS

    Hi,
i´m facing a similar Problem as it is described in  "MSI X99A Gaming 7 and Samsung SM951 PCI-e very slow boot time" https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=255919.0
    My rig:
    - i7 5930k
    - X99S Gaming 7 (BIOS h90)
    - PALIT GTX 980 Super Jetstream
    - OCZ revodrive 3 x2 240 GByte (System disk)
    - Corsair Force 3 120 GByte (game disk)
    - 2x SAMSUNG HD501LJ 500 GByte (SATA 3GB/s)
    - 1 LG Electronics BH16NS40
    - 16 GByte Corsair Vengeance LPX schwarz DIMM Kit 16GB, DDR4-2666, CL15-17-17-35 (CMK16GX4M4A2666C15)
    - 1000W power supply
    - ANTEC P193 case
    - G19 Keyboard
    - MX518 Mouse.
I assembled it yesterday and during the first booting sequence it restarted 3 times.
After that it took 5 minutes to be on the Windows Desktop. Furthermore I recognized that all the HDDs and the optical drive weren´t available.
I tried to activate them in the Windows System - with no result. Than I checked the BIOS, they weren´t present there.
At the end i checked the HDDs only with the power supply, they booted. As soon as I connect them with the SATA cable they stand still - no spin up hear-able.
Now The BluRay and the HDDs are disconnected, the booting sequence is a Little bit faster (still 3 minutes).
In the BIOS I only activated the XMP-Profile für the RAM and I changed the booting sequence for the REVODRIVE.
May someone has any hint for me, how to deal with this Problem - but as I stated at the very beginning: it sounds similar to me.
    Best regards from Austria
    Gerald
P.S.: I apologize for "hijacking" - I tried to simplify the Forum by merging similar issues.

    Your explanation isn't very helpful.
Your third try you got the Revodrive, corsair, and optical running? Meaning that you could boot multiple times and have it all work correctly?
I hate saying it, but if you aren't going to be descriptive, we aren't going to be very much help.
For what it's worth, I'm starting to think that the Revodrive and the motherboard do not work well together.
Personally, I would also consider contacting MSI directly about the issue. They might be able to issue a new BIOS that improves compatibility.

  • Time capsule - WiFi - can it be used as a stand alone station?

I have set up my Time Capsule as a WiFi station and it is showing as connected to my iMac, but the amber light it flashing and I cannot get it to go green.  Do I HAVE to connect it to my external router or can it be used as a stand alone WiFI station?  If so, how do I get the light to stop flashing?  The TC was connected by ethernet cable (green light) but that seemed to slow down my access to the Internet so I disconnected that.  Now I can see the back ups but cannot restore from any of them.
    Regards
    Oldmoondog

The Time Capsule must connect to a modem or other router using a wired Ethernet connection.
The only exception to this would be a setup where you have one Apple router set up as your "main" router connected to the modem.  In that case, it would be possible for the Time Capsule to connect to the main Apple router using a wireless connection.
Assuming that the Time Capsule is operating correctly, and that it has been set up correctly, there should be no speed loss when a Time Capsule connects to a modem or other router using an Ethernet connection.
For example, I have a 50 Mbps Internet connection plan from my Internet Service Provider (ISP). If I cannot the Mac directly to the modem, my speed is usually about 52-55 Mbps.
If I connect the modem to the Time Capsule using Ethenret, then connect the Mac to the Time Capsule using Ethernet, the speed is almost exactly the same, about 51-54 Mbps.

  • Will Compressor 4 run as a stand alone without FCPX?

Will Compressor 4 run as a stand alone without FCPX?
I use FCP 7.0.3 and have COmpressor 3. I wondered if Compressor 4 would run on my MacPro and would I see any improvement over Compressor 3?
4 isn't tied down to FCPX I hope.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks!
    Steve

Unless you need some special encoding that compressor 3.5 can't do, I would not "upgrade" to version 4.  I bought the new version after FCP X hosed my version of 3.5 thinking it would solve my problem.  It only created more problems for me. (BTW, I was subsequently able to resurrect the 3.5 version with compressor repair and doing a bunch of other stuff!)  The new version has Apple Qmaster incorporated into it which on the surface looks like an advantage.  But I have not been able to get it to form a quick cluster despite numerous attempts.  I have "spoken" to Russ on the forum here and he can't figure it out.  I have spoken several times to a seemingly knowlegable Apple care  specialist- they can reproduce my problem but they can't fix it  either.  Consequently, encoding is much slower in Compressor  4 vs 3.  If compressor 3 is doing what you need it to do, stick with it.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!!!

  • AIRHelp stand-alone application takes a while to launch

    Hello,
An AIRHelp stand-alone application with about 50 topics is taking about 20 seconds to launch and sometimes the navigation from one topic to another is delayed.  I removed videos and external links and it runs faster and there are no broken links in the RoboHelp files; however, this sped the output application a bit, but it is still slow.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how this can be made faster? Are there any formatting issues that would slow an AIRHelp application down when generated?
    Thanks,
    Jason

Have you optimized youe graphics? Meaning .jpg at perhaps 50% compression. PNGs are 10X .jpg size on average.

I can't install Lightroom 5 on a second computer, I am NOT a creative cloud customer, I am a stand-alone user.  But when I try to install on my laptop, it always trys to sell me the monthly membership.  How do I enter my serial number in the second copy of lightroom?  It won't ask me for it, and I cannot enter it anywhere in the settings?  I am stuck

  • Migrating stand alone programs to web based application

    Hi,
I have a small application consisting of .class files. I created these using Swing components and it's based on Client/ server model where it accesses Oracle Database.
I want to deploy these programs in Java App Server so that it can be accessed thru web browser.
Please tell me how to do it.
    Thanks in advance.

If this was the thing, Sun, Microsoft and IBM
wouldn't have even giving a thought of migrating
legacy application (I'm talking about Mainframes and
AS/400 here). If this kind of migration is possible,
can't we migrate a java code from stand-alone
    "version" to web enabled.
Migration is not really a term to use to for converting a stand alone application to a web application. Unless of course again you are prepared to turn it into an applet.
The flow and control of a web application are entirely different from a stand alone app. You will not be able to reuse Swing GUI's from a web server. I don't know how to make that any clearer.
Hopefully you have a good design for your existing application and you can relatively easily reuse your existing business logic components.
