Standby Database help....

Hi all,
I have succesfully configured Physical Standby Database, i am configured it on same system in which i am using Oracle 9i EE, Operating system is Windows 2000, no error occured during installation but when i issue this command " ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE DISCONNECT FROM SESSION; " on my standby site, and when i this command " ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT;" or "ALTER SYSTEM SWITCH LOG FILE" on primary db, nothing happens, no logs transfered to standby location ??
anyone tell me how it works ? or is there any installation issue ?? or i missed any thing during installation.
Your prompt help will be appriciated..

  • Need help on Standby database v8.1.7 on Windows

    Hello All,
    Our current setup to create a standby database consists of a bunch of scripts. I'm trying to convert this such that we can use OEM 9.2 and have jobs to do the backup and be able to create the standby database using point and click. Does anyone have this setup?
    This is where I am....I've created the primary database and the standby database. They both work well and next i try to do a failover. The failover works and my new primary database is now active. I want to recreate the standby database now (old primary).
    I do a backup of the new primary database do say D:\backup\. I go on the standby and I restore the controlfile. Next when I attempt to do the restore, I get the following error: RMAN-03002: failure during compilation of command
    RMAN-03013: command type: IRESTORE
    RMAN-06026: some targets not found - aborting restore
    RMAN-06023: no backup or copy of datafile 1 found to restore.
    How can i fix this? Is there a way to tell RMAN that the backup is under D:\Backup\? How do I catalog the files? I remember on 10g you could do this..but that's if you use a recovery catalog. In this case, i'm using the controlfile to do the restore...not using Recovery Catalog.
    Any assistance is appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Upon reading the document i am not clear on upgrade path like do i need to upgrade clusterware as well or not?You need to upgrade the clusterware before RDBMS....therefore it is not optional. You first need to upgrade the clusterware and then the RDBMS.
    The steps listed by you seems to be in order (from a high-level).

  • Physical standby database, dblinks derived frn schemas help

    I observed that many of the procedure,function,trigger of the database using dblinks which are derived from two schemas within the same database (i.e. eg: DBlink "CIS_TO_HIS" created in CISPROD schema connecting HISPROD schema of the same database). Now Oracle doesn't recommend this type of coding as a suitable.
    But I am more concerned about implementing the same code over data guard in Physical standby database as it will be in read only mode and will have different TNS names entry. Therefore since database link uses TNS entry and physical standby would be using a separate TNS entry from primary, this might be a risk of transaction using those dblinks will fail. Hence can you please let me know the risk areas in physical standby of using dblink within same database?

    The best solution for you is to stop using DB links between different DB schemas in the same DB.
    If you do not use RAC, one workaround would be to use the loopback IP (127.0.0.1) to define your TNS connection over.
    <Your DB>=
    (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)
      (HOST = 127.0.0.1)(PORT = 1521))) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVICE_NAME = <Your DB>)))That way, if you hit the production server, the TNS will lead you to the production DB, and if you hit the standby server, you’ll go to the standby DB.
    You would need to create another TNS entry for the production DB on the standby server and use it for standby replication.
    Since this change might affect production operation and failover abilities, you need to thoroughly test it.

  • Help with setting a 2nd Standby Database

    Hi,
    I have an active DataGuard 11gR2 with a physical standby actively running on Linux.
    Now, I need to add a 2nd physical Standby database (for reads only) to this environment, can someone please point to a resource/document which discusses the steps which are involved?
    Thanks much
    -Sravan

    Hello;
    One option is to setup a Cascading Standby. I tested this last spring and I'm happy to share my setup notes.
    www.visi.com/~mseberg/Data_Guard_Cascading_Standby_Setup_and_Test.pdf
    Also worth noting if you have Active Data Guard you don't need a second Standby, ( license for active Data Guard required ).
    Best Regards

    For additional information see :
    Data Guard Concepts and Administration
    12.1.3 Configuring Both Physical and Logical Standby Databases ( Oracle document B14239-05 )
    In this case you could use the Logical Standby as you "Reader" database.

  • Need help on Physical standby database

    Currently our physical standby database is running in manual mode and logs are applied by me manually delay of 2 days.
    And also when I add a data file in the primary database ,I've to manually add the file again on the standby .
    This process is becoming too laborious, now I want to automate this process,
    Now my question is
    For automating this process ,do I need to bounce the database ?
    I want to have 2 days gap for archive log apply process? How should I do that.
    And what all parameters I need to change.
    Please advice....

  • Creating a new schema in a Logical Standby Database

    Hi All,
    I am experimenting with logical standby databases for the purpose of reporting, and have not been able to create a new schema in the logical standby database - one of the key features of logical standbys.
    I have setup primary and logical standby databases, and they seem to be running just fine - changes are moved from the primary to the standby and queries on the standby seem to run ok.
    However, If I try to create a new schema on the logical standby, that does not exist on the primary, I get "ORA-01031: insufficient privileges" errors when I try to create new objects.
    Show below are the steps I have taken to create the new schema on the logical standby. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to delete archivelog with RMAN in the Primary and Standby database?

    Hello,
    I am working on Oracle 10gR2.
    My question is :
    How could I implement a automatized and secure way of:
    1) Delete archivelogs on my PRIMARY server only when these logs are successfully TRANSFERED to all my standby databases?
    2) Delete archivelogs on my STANDBY server only when these logs are sucessfully APPLIED to the database?
    Thanks a lot for your help!

  • Can I rename a physical Standby database without having to recreate?

    Hi all,
    One of my DBA's created a new standby database yesterday. He was supposed to create the standby database with a unique name from the primary system, but he didn't. So right now, DataGuard is running and replicating, and the standby has the exact same database name as primary.
    I'd like to get this configured the way we had planned, to rename the standby database to something unique. I see Metalink Doc ID 15390.1, showing how to rename a database, but I'm not sure if this is possible in the standby environment? Has anyone ever done this? Anything different that needs to be accounted for, in the physical standby DB?
    I'm on 10.2.0.3, on Windows 2003.
    Any help/advice is appreciated!!
    Thanks,
    Brad

    Dear TheBlakester,
    You have to write it on the spfile and bounce the database. You should also have to change the log_archive_config parameter with the new standby db_unique_name.
    From the online Oracle documentation;
    For example, if the DB_UNIQUE_NAME parameter has not been defined on either database, the following SQL statements might be used to assign a unique name to each database.
    Execute this SQL statement on the primary database:
    SQL> ALTER SYSTEM SET DB_UNIQUE_NAME='CHICAGO' SCOPE=SPFILE;
    Execute this SQL statement on the standby database:
    SQL> ALTER SYSTEM SET DB_UNIQUE_NAME='BOSTON' SCOPE=SPFILE;
    Step 4   Verify that the LOG_ARCHIVE_CONFIG database initialization parameter has been defined on the primary and standby database and that its value includes a DG_CONFIG list that includes the DB_UNIQUE_NAME of the primary and standby database.
    For example, if the LOG_ARCHIVE_CONFIG parameter has not been defined on either database, the following SQL statement could be executed on each database to configure the LOG_ARCHIVE_CONFIG parameter:
    SQL> ALTER SYSTEM SET
      2> LOG_ARCHIVE_CONFIG='DG_CONFIG=(CHICAGO,BOSTON)';After than that it is better for you to check following items just in case;
    v$archived_log
    v$dataguard_status
    Data Guard log file & Alert.log file.Hope That Helps.

  • How to configure standby database in a single machine

    I am in Windows XP professional and oracle 9i . I want to configure a standby database for a database called proddb in the same machine. For doing this, I created a standby controlfile. But this work for the same name standby database?. How this happen ? two database with same name possible? How to create the second database (Standby) Please help?

    The Oracle Solaris Cluster concepts guide has some information on which zone model to choose:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E18728_01/html/821-2682/gcbkf.html#scrolltoc
    When managing a Solaris zone with the HA Zones agent, the cluster basically regards the non-global zone as a blackbox.
    As such you can either start the Oracle database as part of the runlevel/SMF startup of the non-global zone, or you can use the sczsh or sczsmf component and use your own scripts to start, probe and stop the Oracle database.
    Usage of the standard HA Oracle data service is not supported in combination with the HA Zones agent.
    If you require a more fine grained control of services running in non-global zones, why not setup a zone cluster and then having HA Oracle failover the Oracle database between non-global zones?

  • Can I use data guard to create a RAC standby database for a non RAC primary

    Hi,
    we need to RAC our production database but the normal methods will mean a long outage. It is possible to create a standby as a single node RAC database and when ready do a graceful failover to the standby database and open it for business. The next step would be to create another RAC node from this on the original server.
    servers are already cluster aware, using ASM etc
    Oracle 10.2

    Yes, you will be able to setup RAC stnadby for a non-RAC Primary. For primary it just needs a available destination for redo shipping it doesn't matter whether it's RAC enabled or not. And ofcourse you are using 10.2 anyway only one node will be running MRP and that is too in standby mount mode.
    However since you have are using You may follow below sequence.
    1. Setup a new standby as RAC enabled.
    2. Perform a switchover.
    3. Shutdown the Old primary (which is standby now).
    4. Install CRS and RDBMS on the old primary and it's new node.
    5. Modify the cluster_database=TRUE and cluster_database_instances=<required number of instances>.
        With above modification mount the standby database in standby mode and start MRP.
    6. Introduce the database and instances to the OCR using SRVCTL add command.
    7. Once you your database is synchronized with Primary do a switchover.
    9. Now you can repeat step 3 to 6 on the other site too.   <- if you need your secondary site to be RAC enabled too
    10. Finally both the sites should be RAC enabled.
    Hope this is helpful!!!

        nt secondary err code: 0As we can see, address_list is empty.
    Can anyone suggest what could be the reason behind this?

    Dear user13295317,
    Here is the error explanation;
    Oracle Error :: TNS-12533
    TNS:illegal ADDRESS parameters
    Cause
    An illegal set of protocol adapter parameters was specified.
    In some cases, this error is returned when a connection cannot be made to the protocol transport.
    Action
    Verify that the destination can be reached using the specified protocol.
    Check the parameters within the ADDRESS section of TNSNAMES.ORA.
    Legal ADDRESS parameter formats may be found in the Oracle operating system specific documentation for your platform.
    Protocols that resolve names at the transport layer (such as DECnet object names) are vulnerable to this error if not properly configured or names are misspelled.Hope That Helps.

    OK that solves part of the problem.
    Now this is very strange error I am getting. The path it looks to recover from archive is not right, it should point as per my actual archive log dest. See below.

    Regards,
    Poorna.

    you seems to have issues with your setting. For instance see the controlfile parameter.
    *.control_files='F:\orakill/\control01.ctl','F:\orakill/\control02.ctl','F:\oradata/orakill/\control03.ctl'
    also check whatever directory given actually exist in the server.
