Standby in HP-UX

hi all,
we are on HP-UX platform with SAP erp application. At present we have one standby database where we copy archive log from primary twice in a day and then apply these archives to the standby database. the archive list of the two databases is as follows
on standby

QUESTIONS
1. archive destination on standby (shown above) does not exist. we copy files to " /oracle/PRD/saparch". Will they be still applied?
2. even the log seqence v$log return different output. alert log file on standby shows that file has been applied
(Wed Jun 13 09:48:13 2007 Media Recovery Log /oracle/PRD/saparch/PRDarch1_61370.dbf)
help will be highly appreciated

Okay, May I know why do you manually copy archive log files from PRD to standby and apply?
2. <archive destination on standby (shown above) does not exist.>
This Archive (log_archive_dest) destination will be used if standby database becomes primary. This location is not meant for the files which is recieved from primary. As for as database is standby doesnt matter about this location.
For the files which recieved from primary database is kept in the standby_archive_dest.

    I am experimenting with logical standby databases for the purpose of reporting, and have not been able to create a new schema in the logical standby database - one of the key features of logical standbys.
    I have setup primary and logical standby databases, and they seem to be running just fine - changes are moved from the primary to the standby and queries on the standby seem to run ok.
    However, If I try to create a new schema on the logical standby, that does not exist on the primary, I get "ORA-01031: insufficient privileges" errors when I try to create new objects.
    Show below are the steps I have taken to create the new schema on the logical standby. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    My choice of name may not have been ideal, however changing new to another name - like gav - does not solve the problem.

    Script has to be run from auxiliary.
    Great details, but what I don't see is how you connect in RMAN.
    Example
    Start RMAN
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target=sys/@recover2 auxiliary=sys/@reclone

    connected to auxiliary database: RECLONE (not mounted)Nothing in your tnsnames or listener jumps out as wrong. I copied them into my text editor and compared against my working ones.
    Generally for active duplication I start the future standby on a pfile NOMOUNT.
    Auxiliary Instance Initialization Parameters Needed :
    DB_NAME
    CONTROL_FILES
    DB_BLOCK_SIZE
    ( add extra parameters like DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT instead of using the SET command - clean up standby spfile right after duplication )
    Then start RMAN and finally run a single line duplication command.
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target=sys/@primary auxiliary=sys/@standby

    I have an IDE disk which, till now, I used to keep in standby mode (it makes an audible humming noise when it's working which annoys me a lot :<). Today I noticed that after running `hdparm -y' on it, it would spin down but then it would immediately spin up again. I'm certain that the disk isn't being used and doesn't have any partitions mounted anywhere on the filesystem. Still, I'm unable to pinpoint the reason it's waking up.
    Any ideas on why this is happening?
    Edit: It appears that the disk gets into standby by itself after 10 minutes. I wish I knew where this value is coming from. O.o
    Edit2: Those 10 minutes must be coming from `hdparm -S1 /dev/sdb'; maybe the hard drive has a lower limit in regard to this setting. :3
    (I'm not sure what kind of information would be useful in order to troubleshoot this issue, but below are some bits I believe are relevant)

    Here is what i get when i try that command.:
    $ sudo hdparm -B 254 /dev/sdc

    I tried other values also and its always the same error.
    I just did another try with -y and the drive stayed in standby during ±40 minutes this time. The most annoying part is that is something that was not happening before I am pretty sure that it would stay in standby for days.

    Why primary keys are essential for creating logical standby database? I have created a logical standby database on testing basis without having primary keys on most of the tables and it's working fine. I have not event put my main DB in force logging mode.

    I have not event put my main DB in force logging mode. This is because, redo log files or standby redo logfiles transforms into set of sql statements to update logical standby.
    Have you done any DML operations with nologging options and do you notice any errors in the alert.log? I just curious to know.
    But I wanted to know that, while system tablespace in hot backup mode,In the absence of both a primary key and a nonnull unique constraint/index, all columns of bounded size are logged as part of the UPDATE statement to identify the modified row. In other words, all columns except those with the following types are logged: LONG, LOB, LONG RAW, object type, and collections.

  • Logical standby and truncate partition

    Hi,
    I'm evaluation whether a logical standby database would meet our needs.
    We have a live database and want a reporting database that is identical to the live one, just minutes behind in time to the live one, plus we want to create other summary tables etc on the reporting db.
    Logical standby seems to meet our needs but I have one query.
    - On the live db the most of the tables are organized by date partitions and only 5 days are kept with new partitions being created every night for the forthcoming days and the oldest date partitions being truncated.
    On the reporting database we want to keep 30 days partitions.
    Can we have all the DDL and DML from live being applied to the standby APART from the specific truncate partition statements?

    Addendum.
    If you can , it is better to truncate the partition but not drop it, after exporting the partition for archive purposes. If you ever need to bring the data back, the data will go into the correct partition . If the table structure has been changed by adding or lengthening columns, this will still work OK where column names match.
    Test ease of restoration of archived data to existing and non-existing partitions with altered structure (dropped columns,added columns, renamed columns) for yourself though.

    PS. When splitting maxdata partition to create new 'highest' partition, use a small initial extent then the 'next' being the expected real size needed. When the partition is truncated, the only space that should remain un-claimable will be that allocated for the initial extent.

  • Logical Standby Database in NOARCHIVE Mode

    Hi,
    I have configured a Logical Standby Database for Reporting purposes. A Physical Standby Database is running for MAA. i.e. in case of Role Transition (switch/Failover) the Physical Stdby Db will get the role of the Primary.
    The logical standby database is creating a lot of Archive Redologs files, nearly every minute. Redolog files are 50MB and there is no work done in db during the time. I'm NOT using Standby Redolog files.
    Is there a need for logical standby database to be in NOARCHIVELOG mode? The Primary is definatley in ARCHIVELOG mode.

    well there are two things to the above:-
    1. there was an archive file nearly every minute:
    this is due to a db recovery. for some reason, the db was in inconsistent state, after a sudden shutdownof the OS. I was on a test environment, on windows vista, unfortunately. unimportant ... a reboot solved it.
    2. Logical standby db in NOARCHIVE MODE when setup for the purpose of Reporting.
    As long as the MAA configured for the primary db, such as physical standby db, and a second, the logical standby db setup purely for the purpose of reporting, which then can run with NOARCHIVELOG mode, after converting the physical standby db to logical.
    logical standby db uses Streams architecture, so this method brings cost, time and performance advantages to the customer.

    If you need the entire database to a single location ... use Data Guard.
    If you need to specify tables, columns, schemas, rules, and are in a
    publish-subscribe situation use Streams.
    Both are share a common architecture.

  • Best practice on using Flashback and Logical Standby

    Hello,
    I'm testing a fail-back scenario where I first need to activate a logical standby, then do some dummy transactions before I flashback this db and resme the redo apply. Here is what the steps look like:
    1)     Ensure logical standby is in-sync with primary
    2)     Enable flashback on standby
    3)     Create a flashback guaranteed restore point
    4)     Defer log shipping from primary
    5)     Activate the logical standby so it’s fully open to read-write
    6)     Dummy activities against the standby (which is now fully open)
    7)     Flashback the database to the guaranteed checkpoint
    8)     Resume log shipping on primary
    9)     Resume redo apply on secondary
    In the end, i can see the log shipping is happening but the logical standby does not apply any of these..and there is no error in the alert log on Standby side. But the following query could explains why the standby is idle:
    SELECT TYPE, HIGH_SCN, STATUS FROM V$LOGSTDBY;
    TYPE HIGH_SCN STATUS
    COORDINATOR ORA-16240: Waiting for log file (thread# 2, sequence# 0)
    ORA-16240: Waiting for log file (thread# string, sequence# string)
    Cause: Process is idle waiting for additional log file to be available.
    Action: No action necessary. This informational statement is provided to record the event for diagnostic purposes.
    I dont understand why it's looking for sequence #0 after the flashback.

    I also was curious if setting up a Logical Standby in noarchivelog mode was possible. It looks like it is...
    We use this simply as a reporting copy of our data. Our analysts do not change any of this data. They just need it to be fairly current (~3 days). At this point, there isn't any need to generate archivelogs so we want to disable the feature to minimize our maintenance and our storage requirements.
    STANDBY DB:
    SQL> select log_mode, open_mode from v$database;

    i have database running on Oracle 10gR1 EE (10.1.0.4.0) on Linux Red Hat. and this server is replicate to DR server for backup. we change 'SYS' password about a week ago and nothing occur until today, the database is not connecting to DR server. here is the error obtain from the alert_log file. is there i 've missed anything when changing SYS password?

    Kind of reply you can always expect from Sybrand...anyways...the controlfile of any production database would always be having a bit in itself which identifies a database as a primary or a standby database, so whenever you try to query select database_role from v$database; for any production database it would always give output as PRIMARY and for a standby it would always give output as PHYSICAL STANDBY..Hope it clears your doubts

  • No data in Usage and Standby?

    Hi,
    I have recently exchanged my white 16GB iphone at the local retail store, but have just noticed that since I exchanged it there does not seem to be any Usage figures in the general settings.
    By that I mean the "usage" and "standby" are blank, above the message "usage times will be shown after iphone is fully charged".
    To try and correct it, I reset the phone yesterday and it was on charge from 10pm last night to 7am this morning so I would have thought would be fully charged. (the battery meter appears to be fully charged)
    Is anyone else experiencing this problem or has any advice on how to correct it?

    When adding/creating an email account, the following presets are available.
    Exchange
    MobileMe
    Gmail
    Yahoo Mail
    AOL
    If you selected the Yahoo Mail account preset when adding/creating the account, the account was created as an IMAP account with Push access available for received messages along with an option to enable or disable Push access for the account.
    The data required to connect with the incoming mail server for an email account to check the incoming mail server for new messages is minute. More battery will be used the more often an account is checked for new messages, but this alone is not a significant battery drain and especially with a single email account. All server stored mailboxes with an IMAP account are not synchronized with the server when the account is checked for new messages. For example, the account's server stored Sent mailbox is not synchronized with the server until the account's Sent mailbox is selected.
    Push is not a constant fetch process. With an account that supports Push access for received messages, a new message received at the incoming mail server is "pushed" to the iPhone without the account having to be checked for new messages. In theory, Push access should use less battery compared to automatically checking the account for new messages, which isn't always the case and this also depends on the time interval set for automatically checking for new messages. You can have the account automatically checked for new messages every hour.
    Depending on how much data is accessed compared to the number and length of phone calls when roaming internationally, data access can be much more expensive.

  • Why is my wife's hotmail account on her iphone draining her battery with usage and standby being the same?  My iphone and hotmail does not do this.

    My wife and I both have an Iphone 5 and hotmail accounts.
    We are on the same wifi and I have restored and reset her phone several times, but whenever I add her hotmail account to her phone, the phone is always in use according to the usage.  also the phone becomes warm as if it was in use for several hours.  The standby time is only about 2-3 hours before dying.  However, removing her hotmail account, stops this.  What about the hotmail account is causing this?

    What you're describing is the expected behaviour.  I believe though that is also is the easiest way to have all the contents available to both of you at all times.  If you have a spacious hard drive you should probably allow this to happen as anything else will be harder to manage.
    My suggestion would be the following if you want to try something different.
    Store all your music at a location that is accessible by both of you — an example would be to use your Public Folder as the locations where iTunes will go and look for all the media files—.  Your wife does have access to it.
    In the Finder you will need to move the folder name iTunes Music to the location in your Public Folder (see above).  Once that's done, you and your wife will have to go into the iTunes Preferences > Advance Preferences and un-check Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library.  From this point on, you can continue to use iTunes as usual.  You'll need to tell your wife what has been newly downloaded/imported into your iTunes so she can manually go look for those items in that Public Folder iTunes of yours and import them into her iTunes.  She will not duplicate by doing that, but, like I say this is an all-manual work.
    She can do the same, so you have access to contents she imported herself.  One more downside of this is that both usernames have to be active in your iMac.  If yours isn't, she won't be able to access any item (song, book, app) located in your Public Folder's iTunes.
    I'm sure there's a way, if you have an router with external hard drive conectivity, for both of you to be able to access —independently— the iTunes Media at all times but I was just reading at another post that doing so can further complicate things.
