Starting a New Business - Is Apple the logical choice?

I will be starting my own business shortly and have a dilemma about Apple. I use a mac at home but have always used a pc in work. I'd like to use Apple in the new business (it is in design etc.) but the cost is so much more than pc. Also I am not 100% sure if the ongoing support in Ireland is as strong for Apple as it is for pc. My head is saying stay with pc for work but my heart Apple.
Has anyone started a small company and used Apple? What were your experiences, how robust is the system in a world dominated by PC and MS? Was the extra cost at the beginning offset by savings later etc.?

Firts of all, as I'm sure you know, this is not the place to come for an unbiassed opionion But you will get some good technical answers.
Secondly, Microsoft Office is the de facto standard in the business world and there are very few (if any) cross platform issues that will trouble you if you use that suite. Will you be using other apps apart from Office?
Thirdly, and most relevant to your question, Foilpan is right. As a business owner/operator you sould look at the total cost of ownership over entire the life of the computers, rather than just the initial setup costs. You should factor is at least the following:
1. initial purchase & setup
2. ongoing secturity & antivirus prevention
3. likely downtime to security issues
4. cost of regular software updates
5. support costs for issues that you cannot resolve yourself
Particularly because of points 2 - 5 your TCO is likely to be much lower with Macs.
For point 1, don't forget to compare apples with apples (small a)... it is very easy to look at a PC ad, see the low price and miss the fact it has no sound card, awful video card, low processor speed, terrible battery life, no firwire, no productivity software, etc.
I have worked for years in companies that 'should' have PC's because they are not in the 'design world' but use Macs. I count myself lucky. Tellingly none of these business have considered switching to PC, even though many of their clients and customers were on PC.
Over the last few years Apple had become more and more viable in an SMB environment and I think you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by going with Apple.

I just got my mac a month ago so go easy on me but I was just working with the pages that was already on it, and then today I know it updated, and now I am unable to open a lot of my documents!:( Idk what you mean by the icloud version lol sorry! As for the version, when I open pages from my apps and click 'about' it says version 5.1? And when I open the document it just goes grey and kind of blinks and doesnt open? No error message or any indication of why it will not open now when I for sure have opened it in the past! Andddd for the OS X I think it is 10.9.1 ??

Icloud or itunes backup, only backs up app data, not the app itself.
so if you restore as new, then there is no app data on your phone, you start out new...

After Upgrading to 10.6.8 my aperture app starts but hangs trying to read the Lib. I removed the old lib and start with new. but still have the problem. 10.6.8 also made my Shark FX7 do the same thing. Any Ideas? Thanks

Before 4.0 I could right click on an open tab and start a new tab. Now the option to do so is no longer on the right click menu, and I have to click the plus sign.

It is kind of bugging the hell out of me. Is there a way to fix it other than uninstalling and reinstalling the old firefox? Because this is a big part of the way I browse.

You can also use ctrl-T or File > New tab (if you have the menubar showing). I can't find an extension that will help you bring back the previous behavior but there probably will be one soon.

I do not have a screen anymore to start a new internet address, or the google window, although I uploaded twice the newest version.

A few days ago my window at the top of the page suddenly disappeared, so now I cannot access new or quick to type in internet addresses anymore. As well, also the little google window on the right top side disappeared. To make things worse, even on another top bar were some icons, one of which looked like a house that - when klicked - got me to google. Now I have nothing but only tabs of old internet addresses to access, but not what I want, i.e. a new address that I usually just typed into the address bar.

Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible:

Open the Customize window to set which toolbar items to display:

*Check that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
*If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette in the customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
*If missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
*If you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar set up

Do you start all new iPad folios in the 2048x1536 rendition?

As the title...
..or do you use the default 1024x768 unless you are specifically creating a Retina-optimised app?

There is no need to ever make a 2048x1536 file in InDesign, and in fact there is almost never a reason to make your folio as 2048x1536 either.
Use 1024x768 as your InDesign document layout size and make a 1024x768 folio. Unless you use the Pan and Zoom overlay this is all you need to do and your folio will look fine on Retina devices.

When I'm signing up for my ID number is it for a new business or for banking purposes

I'm in the process of signing up for a federal ID number and it is asking me if I am getting the number for "starting a new business" or "banking purposes". Since it's a requirement to sell an Ibook in itunes, which is it? Banking or starting a business?

The EIN? if so this is an Apple requirement for tax purposes. Seems to be a USA employer requirement.
On my form I declared as new business ....ebook publisher.
The Banking and Contracts section is for you to confirm your bank details...if/ when you sell items...Apple transfer your earnings less their commission, to your bank. The contracts are Apple requirements.
Its advisable to apply for EiN by telephone ..of you do the agents you will speak with are very helpful and will take you step by step through the forms. It takes about 10 -15 minutes. and they give you the number then and confirm i. writing.
Apple have other banking requirements for UK, Canada and Australia.

Define a new business group

My company has been divided into two so i would like to define a new business group for the sister company.
My question is in what ways will the defining of the new business group affect the creating of the new payroll and elements for the sister company.
Is it possible to use the same elements that were defined for the company initially or is it that i will have to define all the elements all over again for the sister company?
The reason why i am asking is because there will be no change in the allowance and/or deductions that will be performed on the emps that are in sister company and the actual company.

Is your business already decided that you should go for a new BG for your sister company??
If you are planning to go for a new BG, then you have to do setup/implementation for your sister company from scratch.. You have to define all the elements all over again for the sister company.. It's to be treated as a different entity now as it is detached from Parent..and this is required for better reporting purpose..
Since you informed that your sister company is going to follow the same set of rules /approach like parent company, then why don't you keep both business in same umbrella ..I mean BG..
In this case your sister company implementation is going to be treated as a rollout or an extension to parent...
Now choice is yours to decide where you want to stand.. :)

DeskJet 6940 mysteriously starts a new sheet

I have a - DJ6940
My OS is XP pro
My word processor is MS word 2002 SP3
Occasionally, the first few lines of a page will print on one sheet of paper and then the printer prints the rest of the page on a new sheet. It actually ends the first page in mid-character: that is, after several lines are printed the printer will print only the top half of the next line then start a new sheet and finish the page.
It can happen when printing a single page or in the middle of printing several pages
Unfortunately, this is an intermittent problem.
Any ideas?

Does the second page start at the very top of the page with the other half of a line? It sounds like the printer is occasionally picking up a second sheet and feeding it offset a few inches from the first sheet. Try the troubleshooting steps here.

Error when importing business layer using the eulpi

Hi there,
I have a problem importing a new business area into my TEST EUL environment from my DEV EUL. (they are on different databases, i.e. one EUL for each database but all databases are identical apart from database name).
i.e. 1st I export the business area from DEV using the following command:
eulapi -connect username/password@${DATABASE} -export ${EXP_FILE} -business_area "${BUS_AREA}" -identifier -log ${LOG_FILE} -audit_info
and it works perfectly, and I can import the resulting Business area file into a new EUL if the Business area already exists, however, if the business area does not exist on the TEST eul then I get the following error using the command:
eulapi -connect username/password@${DATABASE} -import ${EXP_FILE} -identifier -preserve_workbook_owner -import_rename_mode refresh -log ${LOG_FILE}
Could not locate the Folder with identifier 'XXXXX' in the target End User Layer
Import completed, but with warnings. Please check the result.
This command works to replace the business area if it already exists, but fails if the business area does not already exist, which is actually what I want to do, i.e. create business area in DEV and export it and then import to TEST as part of the test cycle.
The above command actually creates the business area but not the underlying folder. All permissions, database links etc on both DEV and TEST environments are identical.

The export of the business area contains details of the business area and which folders are contained in the business area, but not the details of the folders themselves.
Hence if you import a new business area and the folders contained in the BA are not in the EUL you will get an error locating the folder.
Therefore to create a new BA you need to export all the folders in the BA and then export the BA itself. Then when you import you need to import the new folders first, then the BA.

Propagation of New Business Rule to already deployed EAR

Hi,
we have an EAR with 1 business rule in its DataSync deployed initially in prod. We have then added a new business rule to the datasync and propagated the same. It propagated successfully, but when we check in the portal data base, it showed the path like RuleSets\abc.rls instead of Rules\abc.rls which is how we created and wrote the code.
Do we need to do anything else here. We have propagated the datasync items as a separate operation. Does deleting the whole datasync items entries from the database and redeployment is the only option.?
Please help...
