Starting the iplanet web server 6.0
I have downloaded the iWS6.0 I also installed it on Windows 2000 professional. I have also installed the J2sdk1.4.0_01, Jsdk2.1 on my pc.
I have set the environment variables like:
path = C:\j2sdk1.4.0_01\jre\bin\server\jvm.dll;c:\j2sdk1.4.0_01\bin;c:\j2sdk1.4.0_01\lib
JAVA_HOME = c:\j2sdk1.4.0_01
CLASSPATH = c:\jsdk2.1\server.jar;c:\jsdk2.1\servlet.jar
First of all I want to aske you, is it neccessary to start the iplanet administration server before the web server ?
second, when i try to start the server from the control panel /administrative tools/services/iWS6 it gives an alert saying that "the dynamic link library jvm.dll couldn't be found in the specified class path". How to deal with this problem ?
Third, how to check that the webserver has started /not. Suppose we start tomcat then we can check on the http://localhost:8080 page.
Hi,
<b>I have downloaded the iWS6.0 I also installed it on Windows 2000 professional.
I have also installed the J2sdk1.4.0_01, Jsdk2.1 on my pc. </b>
Are you running iWS 6.0 without any service pack, if so please upgraded to iWS6.0SP3 since iWS6.0 as not
been certified with windows 2000 professional. And about JDK 1.4 also not been certified & tested with iWS 6.x.
<b>First of all I want to aske you, is it neccessary to start the iplanet administration server before the web server ?</b>
Its not needed to start iWS admin server.
<b>second, when i try to start the server from the control panel /administrative tools/services/iWS6 it gives an alert saying that "the dynamic link library jvm.dll couldn't be found in the specified class path". How to deal with this problem ?</b>
Check out this link.

<b>Third, how to check that the webserver has started /not. Suppose we start tomcat then we can check on the <http://localhost:8080> page." </b>
You can check as you check in tomcat, but check the server port.
Eg:- http://localhost:port number of iWS

The threads increase and the iPlanet Web Server 6.1SP5 restart itself
Hi all,
i becoming crazy, with my web servers.
I have 3 front-end balanced servers with the same configuration:
SunOS 5.9 Generic_118558-22 sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V240, 4GB RAM.
iPlanet Web Server is 6.1 SP5
Then the problem is:
- When i start my Web Servers there arn't errors, but during the day, the threads (shown by "top" under under column THR) that in mornig are 300~400 increases until becoming 750~850 and one or more of them restart itself automatically; therefore my head has ordered to the society that supplies us the monitoring service to restart duning the night the web servers at a distance of little minutes in order to avoid the hang of the webs.
How I can avoid the increment of the threads?
Every suggestion is appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Unable to start iPlanet web server
Hi, Iam getting the error unable to locate dll "The Dynamic link libraery jvm.dll could not be found in the specified path" when i tried to start the iPlanet web server.Can anybody tell me the reason?this is an urgent one.
Iam getting this error after changing the Global settings in iPlanet web server for Jre/Jdk Path.Hi,
Look out the below link for your problem :
http://knowledgebase.iplanet.com/ikb/kb/articles/7671.html
As you said you are not able to start the iWS after changing the value of JRE/JDK Path. Then I think you have been use unsupported version of JDK. Kindly revert back to pervious version of JRE/JDK and start the server. To know how to revert back the pervious version of JRE/JDK check the below link.

IPlanet web server auto restart when user login or logout the NT server
Configuration
- NT Server 4.0 SP6a
- iPlanet Web Server 6.0 SP4
- JDK 1.3.1_03
- NT audit turned on for the file <iPlanet WS 60 instance home>/config/password.conf
We encounter a problem that when a user login / logout NT machine, the iplanet web server would be restart automatically.
Could somebody advise why this happen and how it can be solved?
There is a box called "Allow service to interact with desktop" in the service startup menu. What is it means and did it related to the problem?I think you are running into this:

Global data in a servlet using iPlanet Web Server
Our configuration is an Applet->Servlet->JNI->C/C++ code.
We have C code that does a number of lengthy mathematical calculations. This C code not only uses its own global variables but, it is also comprised of numerous subroutines that all call each other, reading and writing global C variables as they go. These globals are all isolated to the C code shareable object (.so) library that is included using the LoadLibrary call when the servlet is initialized.
The problem is that in a multi-user environment (3-5 simultaneous users) we need to have each user have their own "copy" of the servlet (and the C code) so that users will not be accessing each other's global data. We can NOT have only one copy of the C code and define it as synchronized because the calculations that are performed can take a very long time and we can not hold off user requests while the firs user finishes.
Our hope is that there is a way to configure the iPlanet Web server such that each new user that starts up a copy of the Applet/Servlet combination will get their own "space" so that they can work independently of any other user. We have at most 20 users of this system and only 3-5 simultaneous users so we should not have a problem with memory or CPU speed.
If anyone has a solution, I would greatly appreciate it!The C library is shareable. But you don't want it to be shared. That's your question summarized, isn't it?
You probably can't prevent it from being shared, so to prevent multiple use of it you would have to queue up the requests to be done one at a time. WynEaston's suggestion of having the servlet implement SingleThreadModel would help, but I believe the servlet spec allows servers to run multiple copies of a servlet that does that (as opposed to running a single copy in multiple threads).
Your other alternative is to rewrite the math in Java, or at least in some object-oriented language where you don't need global variables (which are the source of your problem). All right, I can already hear you saying "But that wouldn't be as fast!" Maybe not, but that isn't everything. Now you have a problem in queueing theory: do you want a single server that's fast, but jobs have to wait for it, or do you want multiple servers that aren't as fast, but jobs don't have to wait? That's a question you would have to evaluate based on the usage of your site, and it isn't an easy one. -
IPlanet Web Server 6.0 SP1 bug new details
I have found more details regarding the iPlanet Web Server 6.0 SP1 web.xml
parsing errors:
It appears that in web.xml now the sequence of declaration of the elements
plays role!!!!
If I put <servlet-mapping> tag in the beginning, after that I cannot declare
any other <servlet> tag in
web.xml, but if I change the sequence, that is put the <servlet> tags and
than only one <servlet-mapping> tag
at the end than the parser works fine and the server runs.
This is more than strange behavior, because the declaration of the elements
should not be dependent on their sequence of declaration!!!.

----------------------------------------------------------------Dear All,
I want to finalize this problem.
This behavior is actually quite normal and follows from DTD declared at
http://java.sun.com/j2ee/dtds/web-app_2_2.dtd
That is the element <servlet> is listed prior to the element
<servlet-mapping>, so as we
know from DTD syntax, when elements are separated by commas in declaration,
their order is
essential.
So basically what happened, in iPlanet Web Server 6.0 SP1 the DTD
(http://java.sun.com/j2ee/dtds/web-app_2_2.dtd) has changed, so that is why
the old web.xml files, where the order of elements was different, became
invalid according to the new DTD, this is all the problem.
Thank you.

news:9nt7vn$[email protected]..
I could find out that web.xml parsing (SAX) error occurs only if
<servlet-mapping> tag precedes any <servlet>
tag in Web deployment descriptor of iPlanet Web Server 6.0 SP1.
That is if I group all <servlet> tags in the beginning and then at the
bottom I group all the <servlet-mapping> tags,
the SAX parser works fine and the server starts.
In my previous messages I stated that we can have only one<servlet-mapping>
tag, this is not true, the problem was in a position of the tag's
declaration.
Sincerely,

FW: iPlanet Web Server 4.x Advisory
All--
A message from iPlanet about iWS:
Recommend Immediate Patch/Upgrade
We are writing to inform you of an important upgrade recommendation. iPlanet
has identified a security vulnerability in the iPlanet Web Server Enterprise
Edition 4.x products. This problem does not affect any Web Server releases
prior to the 4.x versions, however it does affect all iPlanet applications
operating on the Web Server platform.
A patch and implementation instructions to address the problem are now
available on the iPlanet.com Tech Support site at
http://www.iplanet.com/support/. Without this patch/upgrade, the problem
will persist and affect your site's data security, potentially leading to a
data corruption event.
iPlanet urges all iPlanet Web Server customers to upgrade immediately to
prevent any potential data security risks, and we apologize for any
inconvenience that this may cause you.
If you have additional technical questions, please call your technical
support contact.
Sincerely,
Annelies Habermacher

IPlanet Web Server acl to deny access to class C IP addresses
Hi all,
having not chance to modify an ACL from the iPlanet Web Server GUI (the application just make the acl file and anything else....), I am trying to modify it directly to deny access to all users having IP address starting with 172.
The ACL file created from the iPlanet GUI is the following:
version 3.0;
acl "default";
authenticate (user, group) {
prompt = "iPlanet Web Server";
allow (read, list, execute,info) user = "anyone";
allow (write, delete) user = "all";
acl "es-internal";
allow (read, list, execute,info) user = "anyone";
deny (write, delete) user = "anyone";
I modified it by adding the following deny:
root@webone /usr/iplanet/servers/httpacl # more generated.https-altorendimento.acl
version 3.0;
acl "default";
authenticate (user, group) {
prompt = "iPlanet Web Server";
allow (read, list, execute,info) user = "anyone";
allow (write, delete) user = "all";
acl "es-internal";
deny (read) ip = "172.*";
deny (write, delete) user = "anyone";
but, after applying the changes, I am still (I am on a 172.*.*.* workstation) allowed to access the resource. Then I changed the deny in the following way:
root@webone /usr/iplanet/servers/httpacl # more generated.https-altorendimento.acl
version 3.0;
acl "default";
authenticate (user, group) {
prompt = "iPlanet Web Server";
allow (read, list, execute,info) user = "anyone";
allow (write, delete) user = "all";
acl "es-internal";
deny (read) user = "all";
deny (write, delete) user = "anyone";
nothing happened again. The access to the resource seems not related to the acl changes, although the acl are correctly referenced into the obj.conf file. Unfortunatelly, I do not have much experience in ACL.
Is there anyone able to help me with that issue?
Thank you so much
enricohi all,
sorry for this delay, the matter was solved due to the Mozilla display capability for which this site (the one with the ACL) was not made. Once tried to display with Explorer all was ok and I was able to change the ACL accordingly.
Sorry again, and thaks anyway

Iplanet web server 7 -how to get more information when a certificate is untrusted ?
Hi
When a client tries to access to iplanet 7.0.15, we only get a line in the errors log with a simple error., for instance SSL_ERROR_UNKOWN_CA_ALERT...
We would like to know if it is possible to configure iplanet to get more information about this request..
iPLANET is receiving requests from a lot of clients and sometime it is difficult to identify the source of a error without more information..
We would like have similar information that access log shows when certificate is valid
We get the same information with log-level = info or finest..
Thanks
UgeHi Uge,
Setting the iPlanet Web Server log level to 'finest' will give you more information, but it is very verbose, and you still might not get the information you are looking for. You might want to try 'fine' or 'finer' first to see if either of those gives you the information you need.
With regards to the above error, SSL_ERROR_UNKOWN_CA_ALERT, this means that the client presented a certificate in the SSL handshake that was signed by a CA that the Web Server doesn't have in it's certificate database. In order to ensure the Web Server is kept upto date with the latest set of public CA certificates, I would recommend you upgrade to the latest version.
If you know that the certificates the clients are using are from an internal CA, you need to ensure the Root CA Certificate from that internal CA is installed in the Web Servers certificate database as a trusted certificate.

Thai character problem - iPlanet Web Server 4.1. Please help!
Hi all,
I am experiencing a very annoying problem with iPlanet Web Server 4.1 running on Solaris 5.8. I have a web application with Thai character set encoding support. I have a JSP which is a data entry screen page (using FORM tag) and the data submission can contain Thai characters, however I get HTTP error 400 (bad request) when I submit the form using the client machine running Windows OS other than Windows 2000. I tested in Windows 98 and Windows XP, always get that HTTP error 400.
I have two boxes, Web server machine and App server machine. If I bypass the iPlanet Web Server directly connect to my application server (the app server software has built-in web server, but not suitable for production, that's why I use iPlanet Web Server 4.1) I don't get any problem at all. So I suspect something wrong with the iPlanet Web Server software. I also tested my web application in Linux environment with the same iPlanet Web Server 4.1, but the problem is not there.
Thus, did anyone ever experience the same thing? Can anyone shed some light to resolve this problem? Is the problem reside in the client machine or in the server environment?
Any help is highly appreciated.

Hi Melanie,
In order to run a PERL script under Windows NT the iPlanet Web Server needs to know where to find the PERL interpreter.
follow these steps :
1) Make sure Windows NT knows what a .pl file is. In file Manager click on file and choose associate from the menu. Check the "files with extension" drop-down list for pl - if it exists verify that it is pathed to your perl.exe. If it is not already on the list click the "New Type" button. In the Filetype box put pl. Choose open from the Action drop-down list. In the Command box specify the full path to your perl.exe interpreter (Make sure to use short filenames, rather than long filenames.) Click the OK button. Then click the Close button in the main Associate dialog box. Double click a .pl file to test - it should automatically launch the PERL interpreter and feed it your .pl file.
2) Create a directory to contain your .pl scripts.
~server_root\shell-cgi is a good choice.
or \cgi-bin\
NOTE: Make very sure that this directory is NOT part of the document root, it should have it's own directory (preferably at the same level of the docroot).
3) In the Admin Server select Programs.
4) Choose CGI directory (normally) or WinCGI directory or ShellCGI Directory depending on ur choice from the Programs menu.
5) Put the URL Prefix you would like to map to your Shell-CGI directory into the URL Prefix field.
6) Put the full path to your Shell-CGI directory in the Shell CGI directory field.
7) Click OK.
8) The save and apply changes page will display your changes and give you the opportunity to verify them. If they are correct click the Save and Apply button. If not Click the Undo button and go back to step 4.
(9)You can then call your .pl scripts directly by referencing the directory mapping that you have just created. For example:
http://my.server.whatever/shell-cgi/ myscript.pl
this should work now.
If not Pls Mail me.

Can someone explain to me why Solaris 8 Intel is not
supported by the iPlanet Web Server products (in contrast
to AIX, HPUX, NT, etc)
Is Solaris 8 Intel already a discontinued product ?
Thanks in advance

IE Keyprocessor, Amsterdam
email: [email protected]And I'm waiting for someone to build an object code translator that will take a Solaris Sparc binary and enable it to run on Intel Solaris. Library and system calls should map 1:1 so there's just a little intervening code to translate from Sparc opcode to Intel opcodes (OK I know it's not that simple, but it's not too impossible either). Sparc Virtual Machine for Intel, anyone?

Any way to capture output from iPlanet Web Server V6 at socket level?
Hi,
I'm wondering if it's possible to configure the iPlanet Web Server (V6) so that I can capture the full request and response of a hit and "log" them to another process. Something like a pipeline of NSAPI modules would be ideal. I've written similar code for Apache, IIS, and Tomcat and am wondering if this is possible for iPlanet?
Thanks.Hi, I was wondering if you ever received a response to your question. If so, can you please share it with me?
Thanks,
Tracy
