Have you gone over this section of the wiki and made sure everything is done? Are you using the legacy driver? If so how did you install it, and from where?

  • Lag when dragging windows and scrolling, using ATI Proprietary drivers

Ok, so I've installed Arch Linux on my Desktop PC, and on top of that I'm using Gnome as my GUI. Because I am addicted to Minecraft, I wanted to play it as soon as possible, but I got this error telling me to install my graphiccard drivers. And so I installed the "ATI Proprietary Driver".
After rebooting my computer I noticed that when I drag windows around or scroll inside them, it lags, though I have no problems watching movies. And still Minecraft complains about graphic drivers!
I'm not a pro at Linux so I would really like some help here, because I don't know what to do.
    :EDIT:
Think I solved it! I just ran the installation one more time and now there's no lag? Hmm...

  • X fails with new catalyst drivers

I'm running 64bit arch and i just upgraded to the new catalyst drivers from AUR (9.4). When I try to run xorg now, it fails (screen just goes black and I can't switch to any of the vcs or kill X). The X log file says that it can't load the glx module because it doesn't exist. I'm not entirely clear on modules and how they work, but what should I do to try and get X working?

I'm running a Radeon HD 4870 x2. I've been trying some things, and now I dont get the missing glx error. I do get these errors:
(EE) Failed to load module "dri2" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "record" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) fglrx(0): Unknown EDID version 0
Though it appears that X keeps going past all three of these. Here's my entire log: http://pastebin.com/f5153ff39 . Here's the xorg.conf file aticonfig generated with the unused device, monitor, and screen sections commented out: http://pastebin.com/f1e765d83 .
Any help on where to go next would really be appreciated, I've been at this for over a day now.
jun, I think the wiki discourages getting the drivers from the amd site directly, though given the success (or lack thereof) I'm having with the AUR drivers, I can't say (personally) that they're any better.

  • Probs with ATI Catalysts Drivers

I’m currently using ATI Catalyst Drivers 6.14.10.6404 (3.9) for my ATI Radeon 9600xt.
If I upgrade to the latest ATI or Omega Drivers (4.7 I think), my card crashes and is very unstable.
    my current graphics settings are:
    enabled VPU recover
    fast write is on
    AGPx8
Why does 3.9 work and 4.7 not work, I have only had this problem since changing to this board.
    Any help appreciated.

Well I hope it works for you engrrowl!  I was installing a slipstreamed version of XP with SP2.  But that sure didn't help me.  I would randomly have my screen corrupt with my 9700.  And that stupid card has given me headaches since I got an LCD.  So driver incompatibility used to make my screen go black all the time.  It would then revert to normal (maybe!).  But there were many times I had to shutdown by the keyboard and disconnect the DVI cable to get it to work again.  And the LCD is a Samsung so it's not cheap.
I broke down the other night and when I had to reinstall WinXP from scratch I reverted to an older GF4.  This morning I ordered a Geforce 6800, and it will "upgrade" fine.  But if I tried to go from an ATI to an Nvidia I would have had to reload my OS again.    So it worked out for me.
But it's strange that switching video cards solved all my "issues".  That and the fact that I've never really like ATI's drivers means I will never get another of their cards.

  • Problems with Ati Propietary drivers, Yaourt

Im an ubuntu refugee and a nub-zilla i will try to include as much information as possible and hope fuly get some help. Thanks in advance!
    Arch x86_64
I am attempting to install the propietary ati drivers using yaourt from aur
I have base and base-devel installed (notsure if that matters)
to find it i issed th command: yaourt catalyst-utils
the first option is the one i attempt to install
    yaourt -S /aur/catalyst-utils 9.8-1
everything goes smoothly until the very end
    "Finished making: catalyst 9.8-1 x86_64"
    "Continue installing catalyst utils? [Y/n]
    y
    Password
    "loading package data..."
    "checking dependencies..."
"error: replacing packages with -U is not supported yet"
"error: you can replace packages manually using -Rd and -U"
"error: failed to prepare transaction (conflicting dependencies)"
    ": : catalyst-utils: conflicts with libgl"
==>WARNING: You package is saved in blah blah blah
any suggestions as to how to get this working would be amazingly helpful, im such a nub that im not sure which part of all of this information is useful
    anyway thanks again!

I have another problem. I install everything properly, reboot my system and dmesg shows fglrx has loaded fine (added it to rc.conf). But when I startx my monitor is left black and my system unresponsive. Cannot get a log for this attempt of x session (not even with startx > xlog). And following the wiki does not solve my problem (it says to delete /etc/ati/amdpcsdb.

  • [SOLVED] Artifacts with EXAPixmap ON and KMS with ATI OSS drivers

I had some problems for many months on my Arch Linux installation and I couldnt figure out what was causing it, so, because I found the sollution, I wanted to post it here and share it with you.
I, like others, was experiencing huge artifacts with KMS and EXAPixmaps on, on various cases, visuals and textures. After fiddling with all radeon options in xorg.conf and KMS on/off I found out thats its best for me to have KMS on (I couldnt play wine games otherwise) and EXAPixmaps off. But then again, when EXAPixmaps was off, I had poor 2D performance with KMS on, Xrender acceleration wasnt working and was falling back to software engine. Solution came from something that was brought to my attention in this topic. I ve set ARGB visuals off, raster engine for rendering and tried EXAPixmaps on.
It worked! Everything are as they supposed to be. Xrender engine and composite manager are finally working, no more artifacts. Framebuffer memory on my radeon card was somehow cleared. I then later found out an awkward solution on how to clear it by demand... Start X with vesa driver... then fix again xorg.conf back to radeon driver and reboot.
Now I have both 2D and 3D acceleration, I am logged in with KDE and have good performance. My glxgears output is 1000 to 1150 fps (vsync off) and I am using Xrender for the KDE desktop effects.
EDIT: I must clarify that I have an ATI Radeon 9200 Mobility M9+ (R200 serries)

I 've made some more edits and this is my current xorg.conf
    http://pastebin.com/x6ubG80K
I have ColorTiling set on for performance, be careful as it may be resource hungry in 3D apps but it increases dramatically fps.
You can try setting off EXAPixmaps as well and see how it goes, but then you ll have poor 2D performance and yet videos will play just fine either way.

  • [SOLVED]Problem installing ATI catalyst drivers

Hello arch users, ive been having trouble when installing the ati proprietary drivers through pacman. I followed the wiki and added the catalyst repo into my pacman.conf file. however when i type in sudo pacman -Syu i get this:
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
error: failed retrieving file 'catalyst.db' from catalyst.apocalypsus.net : The requested URL returned error: 404
error: failed to update catalyst (download library error)

    extra is up to date
    community is up to date
    multilib is up to date
    :: Starting full system upgrade...
    there is nothing to do
and when i try to install catalyst and catalyst-utils i get this as an output:
    resolving dependencies...
    looking for inter-conflicts...
:: catalyst-utils and libgl are in conflict. Remove libgl? [y/N] y

Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
any idea on what to do?
i want to use the proprietary over the open source because it gives me less problems when using 3d rendering.
or are there any other ways of installing these packages other than pacman?

You could add 'SigLevel = Never' under the catalyst repo in pacman.conf, so that it doesn't check for package integrity.
And about the 404, maybe your 'Server' is incorrect. I use 'Server = http://catalyst.apocalypsus.net/repo/catalyst/$arch'

  • Black screen on startx with ati radeon HD4330 Mobility and fglrx

    Hi,
I managed to install Archlinux on my HP Butterfly laptop that's great !
However I am not able to get X running properly.
    lspci|grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M92 LP [Mobility Radeon HD 4300 Series]
Firstly I tried to use the xf86-video-ati open source driver but it made my kernel crash during the module init.
So I am now trying fglrx, and at least my kernel is unharmed.
But all I get is a black screen after running startx.
Here is my X log :

  • Xorg7: fglrx drivers fails with modprobe

Arch installed three days ago from ISO Noodle (after a crash of an old HD), have been actualised up today with xorg7. ATI Radeon 7200LE card is correctly recognised by lshwd as Radeon QD using driver 'vesa', but a display in X flitters in comparison with that in xorg6.9, where it was absolutely steady . Package ati-fglrx is installed correctly. Module 'fglrx' fails loading either placed in modules section of rc.conf or manually invoked by 'modprobe'. Configuration via 'aticonfig' led to inefficient 'xorg.conf' for missing 'fglrx'. Module path in xorg.conf is correct and ATi drivers as well as 'fglrx'module are present. Monitor section of 'xorg.conf' has propper options according the monitor specification. Any idea what is wrong and why 'fglrx' is not recognised when trying to load it? Thank you.

I think brain0 is right on this one. Your card is not offically supported by the fglrx driver as seen in this quote taken from the ati website
"The ATI Proprietary Linux driver currently supports Radeon 8500 and later AGP or PCI Express graphics products, as well as FireGL 8700 and later products. We do not currently plan to include support for any products earlier than this. Drivers for earlier products should already be available from the DRI Project or Utah-GLX project."
The opensource driver mentioned by brain0 should do the trick.
remove your ati drivers that you installed
    re-install libgl-dri
install the open source ati driver "pacman -S xf86-video-ati"
change your driver line in xorg.conf to
    Driver "radeon"
from what you most likely have right now...
    Driver "fglrx"
    that should do it!
    best of luck!

I'm setting Bootcamp 3.2 on my iMac 27", OSX 10.6 machine - but my ATI Graphic Drivers installation is failing.
i get the message: "setup did not find a driver compatible with your current hardware or operating system., Setup will now exit."
i think it's having problems "Extracting setup.exe" - i get the message "Cannot create setup.exe" and "Cannot create data1.cab"

    You're welcome.
    Thanks for the points.
    10 points for your solution!

  • Can't Install ATI Video Drivers on Bootcamp with Windows 7 64-bit

I've just installed Windows 7 64-bit under Bootcamp but can't seem to get any ATI Graphics drivers to install. I ran into the common blank-screen problem during installation and temporarily solved that by deleting atikmdag.sys from within Lion. At the moment W7 runs with 640x800 resolution (pretty chunky on a 27" screen!). The ATI Catalyst software just doesn't run at all (i.e click on it and nothing happens). I've used DriverSweeper to force remove all drivers and start again but every time I reboot, Windows automatically reinstalls the default driver that seems to be causing the problem in the first place!
For reference, here are iMac specs:
    iMac 27" w/ OS X Lion 10.7.2
    2.8Ghz Intel Core i7
    4GB 1067Mhz DDR3 RAM
    ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

gets asked 100s of times, daily too. check my profile bookmarks for "AMD" thread(s).

its probably because there was some chatter that you have to have a patched xorg-server since xorg upgraded to 1.8. Go through the AMD/ATI Bar and Grill thread (last few pages) to see if a solution is available. But that could be old news.
Which version of catalyst drivers are you using?

  • Problems with ATI drivers and gnome3?

I've tried to install gnome3 off of the gnome-unstable repo (sudo pacman -S gnome-unstable/gnome gnome-unstable/gdm I'm assuming that's the proper command). However, when GDM starts, my screen just flashes a cursor, goes blank, turns off, and repeats. Is there a problem with ATI drivers or is the package just not working at all right now?

I'm also having troubles with Catalyst and gnome3 (I'm ussually in i3 btw) just playing with it tho. Seems to detect my graphics as 'VESA: JUNIPER" which probably means it's using some sort of fallback, eitherway it's not very functional and messes with my X server a bit
EDIT: I can get into gnome, but there's a lot of flickering doing anything, should proabaly check for bugs on their tracker
EDIT2: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 89#p913189 <--- looks like that might be gaining some traction, something to watch
EDIT3: This bug and This Bug might be relevent, not too recent tho
    And another one
    so yeah..... ATI
