Still no playlist shuffle order view in iTunes 11.0.1. Alternatives?

iTunes 11.0.1 has not restored the ability to view and export playlists in shuffled order. Does anyone know of a good Mac alternative to iTunes?

  • Playlist shuffle order the same on multiple ipods?

I'd like to have a random playlist of songs that is in exactly the same order on several ipods. I seem to recall in previous versions on iTunes that I could shuffle a playlist and save it as a new playlist, but I don't seem to be able to do that now.

I have solved this in a roundabout way:
Copy the song files to an old laptop that's still running an ancient version of iTunes (Vers 4)
Shuffle the songs in a new playlist on that laptop
Export the song list (playlist) as a text file
Import that playlist back into my current computer and iTunes
Voila! A random playlist that I can copy to multiple iPods

  • Music playlist track order... iTunes vs ATV 2nd Gen

Streaming music from my iTunes Library to new 2nd Gen AppleTV: When I attempt to listen to a music playlist from my iTunes library through AppleTV, the track order within the ATV playlist does not match that of the playlist in my iTunes library. The songs within the ATV playlists are always sorted alphabeticaly by song title and do not match the sorting of playlists in my iTunes library.
I contacted an Express Lane advisor about this, case number 186510612, and was politely advised that there's apparently no solution. The advisor recommended that I submit feedback (which I did).
Track order on a music playlist is very important for several reasons. Any suggestions?

I couldn't agree more. I, too, have been an Apple/Mac user from the beginning. This seemed like such an elementary issue that I was convinced I was missing something simple. Evidently not, based on your experience and the response I got from tech support. I encourage you to report this issue in "feedback" http://www.apple.com/feedback/ and maybe Apple will fix it in a software update.
For now, ATV is almost unusuable for streaming live album playlists with "intro" tracks. Moreover, studio album track order on ATV does not correspond with that intended by the album producer which, in itself, denegrates the artistic experience.

  • Playlist song order correct in iTunes, incorrect on device.

The playlist is smart.  The song order is correct in iTunes and shows the correct order on the device if you look at the contents through iTunes.  However, when looking at the playlist on the device itself the songs are out of order.

Well, while the playlist in iTunes and the playlist on the iPhone, as it appears in iTunes, match, the problem is that the iPhone seems to be stripping the instruction to order the songs randomly.  That instruction is given in the 'limit to 30 GB selected by random' line.  The list on the iPhone is in order from least recently played to most recently played.  The highlighted column in the playlist is the leftmost 'number' column not the Last Played column.  Any clues hiding out there?

  • Playlist shuffle view changed with update

    Hi all,
I recently upgraded to version 8.0.2.20 and installed Genius. Since then, I have noticed that my shuffled playlists are displaying differently. Previously when I shuffled my tracks the songs would appear in shuffled order. Now iTunes just skips around my playlist view to the current song. Is there a way to change my view back? I have tried sorting by Last Played and the View menu doesn't seem to have the option I'm looking for.
    TIA for the help!

You probably have your playlist sorted on one of the named columns - the little black triangle tells you which column it is sorting on.
In order for the shuffle to display normally, you need to click in the header row in the column just to the left on name. The little black triangle should be there.

  • I just noticed that I can no longer get the shuffle feature on my iTunes 10.4.0.80 to work. I've turned it off and on, but it still just goes in order of the playlist. I too have been getting an error msg at computer startup.

I'm not sure how long it's been like this, but I just noticed that my songs no longer shuffle when playing from iTunes (running 10.4.0.80). No matter if "shuffle songs" is off or on, they still just play on down the playlist in order.  Could this be related to other problems I'm seeing listed that seem associated with the latest update? I also get an error msg when my computer is starting up that I think is associated with this latest update (something about not being able to read a line from "Apple sync helper" (hope I haven't butchered that too much, haven't had a chance to copy the error msg)). Is this something that's likely to be fixed in a later update?

After looking at other people's posts, I think it's official: there is a bug. Itunes support said I should not have lost the drag/drop tool and I haven't on the laptop that is running itunes 10.4 and operating system 10.6.8. I chatted with someboby who lost both his drag/drop and side scroll and what we have in common is a wacom tablet for a mouse. My laptop is a wireless mouse. I reinstalled whatever updated driver that wacom has out there, shut the system down for night, hoping for magic, but alas none to be had. So if I want to change song order, I network the laptop and desktop, share the screen on the laptop, drag and drop to my heart's content and curse Apple for making me work this hard to find the tool that was once at my fingertips. Apple also let me know that if I want to share songs in household that the hundreds on songs that were purchased for .99 need to be repurchased for another .30. Maybe Apple is holding my drag/drop tool captive til I pay up the money or Maybe the next update will fix the problem, I for one give up for now.

Yeah - not really. Sorry - but you will need to get it fixed so you can back it up. You are going to want to Restore your new iPhone from that backup when you get it, so it will really be worth it.
As soon as you get your new iPhone, set up automatic iCloud backups, or if you don't have Wifi, then it is really important to get into the habit of backing your device up weekly to iTunes.
    Best of luck!

  • I have an iPod 5thGen 30 GB. My tracks on my playlists are rarely in the correct order on the iPod, tho the order is correct when viewed on iTunes.

I have an iPod 5thGen 30 GB. My tracks on my playlists are rarely in the correct order on the iPod, tho the order is correct when viewed on iTunes. Is there anything I can do?

It goes by the Track # field, as seen in on a list in iTunes.  So, make sure the Track # field is correctly entered for each song when you review the album on a list in iTunes.  Also, make sure the Album field is entered identically for all the songs on the album.
You can edit those fields by doing a Get Info on a song, and going to the Info windows's Info tab,

  • ITunes 11 Shuffling: Can I Display Track Order Like Old iTunes?

In iTunes 11 when I suffle a playlist, it keeps the same number to the left of the track, whereas before if I shuffled (and had the number column selected) it would rearrange to show the shuffled order (what is now displayed under the "Up Next"). Is there a way to get the playlist to rearrange like it used to?
    Thanks for any help!

AWESOMELY, APPLE DELETED MY EDITS TO MY PREVIOUS POST ABOVE AND WON'T SEEM TO LET ME EDIT OR DELETE IT.
POSTING THIS BETTER VERSION AS A NEW RESPONSE.
This is stupid, but it works:
If you want to shuffle a regular (non-smart) playlist that you made yourself:
    1. Let's say your original non-smart playlist is called "Road Music"
    2. Start a new smart playlist based on the criteria Playlist is Road Music, and check the box for Limit to a number of items selected by random
The bottom Limit... random part is the key here. Even if you don't want to limit the number of songs, put a large number here so it will let you use the "random" part.
    3. Once you hit OK, that smart playlist will be the contents of Road Music, but shuffled. Make sure you're sorting it by that first "song number" column, or it may not show up shuffled.
    4. From the main playlist view, copy all the songs that are in the smart playlist you just created.
    5. Start a new non-smart playlist. Let's call it Road Music Shuffled. Paste in the songs you just copied from the smart playlist.
A very stupid number of steps to do something that was really easy before, but it does work.
Side note: you can reshuffle that intermediate smart playlist you made in step 2 by unchecking that limit... random checkbox, saving, reopening and rechecking the box. Again, something we used to be able to do in one click.

  • Playing a playlist with multiple albums in Grid View in iTunes 8

    Hi All,
Here is a situation I came across, that was quite unexpected compared to the behaviour in iTunes 7.
Suppose I have a playlist with multiple artists/albums. I have this playlist in Grid View. I choose this playlist from the left side navigation tree and press the play button. This playlist is set to shuffle by songs. I expect it to play a song and jump to the next song. iTunes 8 would just keep playing the same songs in the first album listed in the Grid View and would not jump to any other.
    http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/4726/itunes20080910191124oh2.jpg
In this screenshot above, it will keep the songs in "The Very Best Of". If I press Ctrl+L (show now playing) then it would show only the songs in this album. This quite explains why it doesn't play other songs.
To explain a bit more on what's happening:
If I go to List View the song now playing does not have the Now Playing icon:
    http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/1113/itunes20080910191500vf3.jpg
Notice it is playing "Opa Opa" but in the List View, it doesn't show it.
This is because in Grid View if you play a song from the playlist, it has its own "virtual playlist"
    http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/5269/itunes20080910191525wl1.png
Notice the now playing icon there.
    Why is this the case?
I hope you guys understood what I was trying to explain.

turingtest2: I had already done exactly what you described in the *"Missing Artist or Album not with others by same artist"* section of your article. But what I hadn't done was the advice you gave as the last sentence in this section...*"In addition if you change the Compilation status of tracks they may be temporarily treated as tracks from an Unknown Album, again things should resolve themselves if you close and reopen iTunes".* As soon as I closed and restarted iTunes, the Unknown Album with five tracks disappeared and the tracks were again displayed with the correct album.
Your article is a great read, even for people who understand iTunes...there is a lot of helpful advice there to have bookmarked just in case any of the other problems you address are ever encountered. Thanks for taking the time to compile it and share it iTunes users.

  • Can one organize a playlist in the grid or artist view in iTunes 11?

can one organize a playlist in the grid or artist view in iTunes 11, i.e visually? the playlist as just a list of songs/ artists is a hopeless & very frustrating way to orgaize a list of maybe 30 songs/ artists that i might have downloaded in one session. or do the boffins at mac have that kind of brain numbing memory capacity?

hi, yes i use that, but what i'm asking is can i drag the songs into the order i want when i have grid or artist list. in artist list it just lists alphabetically, it does not list in playlist order. it seem s to me that only in 'list' view without images that i can drag songs around, which is useless.
    thanks

It does not look like this is possible with iTunes 11 (or 11.0.1).

  • Playlists shuffled in itunes but alphabetic in ipod

I have an ipod classic which recently crashed and was reset and is working fine except my playlists are playing in alphabetic order rather than shuffled as they are in itunes. How do I fix that.
Also, can I suffle a playlist and then move songs into a different order? Instructions say you can but it is not working. Is there a thorough description of playlist functions somewhere?

The shuffle function in iTunes is independent that the shuffle function on the iPod. In the iPod, if you go from the main menu into the settings, you will find a shuffle option. You can change it to OFF, Songs, and Albums. Generally you want SONGS to randomly shuffle your music.
The iPod setting is universal to all "lists" you can play in the iPod (unlike iTunes where you can turn on/off shuffle for individual playlists). So... when you go to your playlist, it will be listed in alphabetical order (by artist I believe?). When you begin playing out of that playlist, it will play whatever song you start it with, but then after that, all other tracks from the playlist should play in random (shuffled) order.
So check your iPod and turn on the shuffle function in the settings menu.

  • Playlist shuffles and plays in random order

My new iPhone 3Gs is driving me nuts when I'm trying to listen to a playlist I created and loaded on my computer. The iPhone plays all of the songs on my playlists in random order. I have the "shake to shuffle" mode off and "shuffle" is not on. I even check to see if the "shuffle" was on in iTunes and it is not. What is the deal? Anybody else having this problem?

From the Now Playing screen, tap the album cover to see the additional song controls. Makee sure the shuffle symbol on the right side under the scrubber bar is selected to "white".

Not sure why this is happening and it is a pain. Once the Purchased list sorted by 'date added' go to the left most column and select the top - in my Purchased list the new items go to the bottom and I drag them back up to the top position.
