Stolen phone reappearing on my Wifi network - questions for proof of a crime

Background info My stepdaughters phone went missing about two weeks ago. On the smart wifi there is a device list and it has a history of all devices ever connected to my network. My stepdaughters iphone appeared as "Nicole's Iphone" under my network. Similarly everyone's devices appeared with their names. The day the phone went missing my stepdaughters iphone appeared as "offline". Yesterday while playing playstation I noticed my connection was a little shotty so i decided to check how many devices were connected to the router - and i see "Nicole's Iphone" was "online".  Ecstatic, i called my wife and said we found the phone. My wife calls her mom and the mom questions the two girls if they had actually found the phone. Both of them denied it. But my neice had a brand new white iphone 5 (the same color and model as my step daughters missing phone) and it was connected to our wifi under "adriana's iphone"  When questioned where she got the phone from because nobody had bought it for her she said a boy at school gave it to her. about 45 minutes had passed and the phone suddenly went offline again - she called the boy to come pick up the phone because "she didn't want any problems" When we told her to tell the boy to come back with the phone she all of a sudden doesn't know his address, his last name, and he magically doesnt respond to any of her messages when using another phone.  The proof of theft My neice had a phone which i had blocked internet access to because i didnt know who's device it was and i thought it was a random person. The name in the device list came up as Wendy. Wendy is one of her friends who has been at the house before. Wendy gave her that phone and she reformatted it. Even though the name in the phone was now Jackie it still showed up in our device list as Abby because the MAC address never changed.  I told my neice that the reason we know it is Nicole's Phone is because the MAC address of the device is the same therefore it is the same exact device. She claimed that the phone says Jackie and it is her friend's phone and she doesnt know why it is coming up under Nicole. She doesnt know about MAC addresess at all and that it is a unique code written into the device by the manufacturer.  A call with customer service I called linksys technical support to voice my security concern and they confirmed that the mac address is unique. They also confirmed that I can assume that the phone is my step daughters iphone.  What i need from the Linksys Community I am going to show my family this thread later in the day. Please confirm everything that I am trying to convey. This girl is 13 years old and stealing from her own family. I need backup to show my family that I am not falsely accusing anyone of a crime. Definitive evidence is definitive evidence. While they might not be tech savvy nobody can deny cold hard facts. I dont want to paint a negative portrayal of this girl because i do believe people make mistakes and i do believe she can be a productive member of society, But the lack of remorse is pissing me off. The look on her face is like there is no way in hell i can prove she stole the phone.  Help me out.

you should be able to confirm the phone id number with your cell venxor as well.  check for the imei number and they should be able to verify that

You are not addressing Apple here. If you have a problem, describe it and someone might be able to help. Just to be sure, the wi-fi on the phone will go off after the phone goes into sleep mode unless it is actively being used. This is a battery saving measure. If you are actively using the internet, and the phone is still awake, then the wi-fi should remain connected.
What troubleshooting steps have you tried.

  • It works perfectly fine in all wifi networks except for one

    Hi everybody!
I have a black macbook from 2007. It works perfectly fine in all wifi networks except for one. It´s a new network, a much faster one they say, that has been installed where I work. It works perfectly fine in my home wifi network and in every other that I have tried to date. It´s just this one.
Might it be that this new, faster wifi freezes the laptop? any experts that can shed some light?

Do you have a case on it?
    If so, take it off.
If not, probably an issue with the camera itself so get the iPad replaced.

  • My Wifi Network Question about playing media

The only movies you can play must be in your iTunes library. If your iTunes library resides on this USB drive then yes. If not, then no.

  • HT4623 wifi networks ask for a password to join: what password is it?

Each time I select a netwrk to join for wifi, it asks for a password. I don't what to type as password. Anyone knows?

    1. To be fair, I didn't name that network; it was the guy who installed it - believe ot not, Most people get these installations done by others. 2. Just because you know that you can name yours, doesn't mean everyone knows that or even want to do it themselves. 3. If I could find that in the documentation, I wouldn't have come here to raise the question. The documentation didn't say anything about WHERE was the "key" written down. (Here they called it "key" as opposed to "password.") 4. That expression "business propieter" was not applicable, obviously I was at home if my network's name started with HOME- and you missed that part. 5. Your hypothetical example didn't help at all; all conceptual.
I'm not going to have serious issues if a Good technological savvy person knows to decipher how basic the problem is and that the person asking is not as savvy as them by the simple way the ask the question. Those who are good detect how to better guide the seekers by asking more questions. I was clear when I said I needed clear steps. I don't have any serious issues, you just need to ask questions to better understand the issue. The other person answered my question in a short paragraph: straight to the point. And that story about strangers meeting and you sharing your password with them, frankly sounded creepy; you may be the one having serious issues since everyone is advised to NOT SHARE PASSWORDS. And that's a very basic security advice.
    Have a good day.

  • I forgot my wifi network password for iPad 2. Where do I find it? Can't seem to find it in user guide.

Anyone know where I can find how to lookup my wifi network password in the user guide? I set it up so long ago I forgot it.

I assume that you mean in your WiFi router user manual, because you won't find that information in the iPad manual user guide.
See if this is of some help.

  • Network question for IPhone 4

I want to buy IPhone 4 unlocked factory from USA, but I am not sure its work with TCI Network in Iran.
So could you please follow me about this question? Please tell me which version is compatible with our network.
    Thanks

Ok but very expensive in other country? You have a 2 choice in US, first buy with AT &T with low price and the other buy from store without AT &T 650$ the second way is locked? What is different between 2 ways?
the difference between the 2 is one is a subsidized price with a contract of 2 year commitment. Which is locked to AT&T.
the other one is the no commitment, which means it is still locked to AT&T but that you don't renew your contract that way.
Either way All iphones in US are carrier locked to AT&T and it can not be unlocked at all.

  • Network question for PC owners.

Hope you can help ? I'm a newbie when it comes to networking. I have a desktop PC with cable modem and Airport extreme connected wirelessly to my PC laptop. All is working fine. Internet on both machines great. Both are XP pro using WPA2 encription.
Now...I want to share drive or folders between the two. How do I proceed ? I don't want to use the APX disc share for it,s FAT32 limitation.
Everything in this forum seems to PC to Mac or Mac to PC. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

Hello Kevin Bakey. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I am assuming that the desktop PC is connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) via Ethernet. If so, then all you need to do is to enable File & Printer Sharing on both PCs, and then, share the particular folders on each that you want to access from the other.

  • WIFI stops working properly when I move between WIFI networks?

    Hi Guys...
This is my first post. I hope you can help because it's driving me crazy!
    Hardware: iPhone 4s running iOS6
I use my iPhone on my home and work wifi networks. Both networks are running well and noone has problems with any other devices conecting at either location.
I noticed recently that wifi started to drop out so badly that I couldn't resolve web pages, use the twitter app or access the app store etc. The phone is indicating a full wifi reception at all times but nothing works! I did a search of the forum and found some threads relating to wifi issues on the 4s on ios6. One of the answers was to reset the network settings on my phone. I did this and reconnected to the work wifi network and everything was fixed! Super fast connection again! Brilliant I thought!
I went home and logged in to my home wifi. It ran ok for about a minute then became totally up responsive just the same as it was at work! I reset the network settings and it fixed it! This happens every time I move from one wifi network to another so I can't have multiple wifi networks stored for some reason?!?
Is anyone else experiencing the same issue? Does anyone know if it can be fixed?
Apple people... Do you know about this issue?
Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated

    This might help:

  • Inconsistently discovers wifi networks

Every since I've owned my iPhone 5S, it's had trouble finding wifi networks.
Usually, what happens is that I click on settings, WLAN, and then a long list of networks pops up. If I select any of those networks then back out, or if I select a passworded network and accidentally put the wrong password on it, I'm not given the option to see ANY of the wifi networks again for another 5 or 10 minute. It just stays on the screen saying "Choose a network... " with the little "working" symbol to the right and discovering nothing. Restarting the phone sometimes helps. Turning the WLAN on and off does absolutely nothing.
    Anyone else have this issue?
I've also reset all network settings twice now to no avail.
It's not a problem if the first time I see a list of networks I know which one to join, and it's not a problem if I get the password correct on the first try - but other than that I'm screwed and unable to find networks after that point.
Note that even when it says "Choose a network... " and is showing nothing (when a minute before it showed 7 networks), I can still go to Other, and if I type in the name of the network, security type, and password all correctly, it connects instantly, even if it wasn't seen before.
This happens at my own home, my work, every coffee shop I've ever been to. I live in China now, but it has happened both here and when I was in the U.S.

Interesting hypothesis B-rock.  I could try contacting the network administrator but my guess is that I'll be met with a blank look when I ask for that! Still can't be bad to try!
Another piece of "anecdotal" evidence for you.  At the local garden centre (which is part of a chain) I used to be able to connect - no problem.  Then suddenly all connections failed - at all locations.  I am leaning towards believing that they have changed routers to more "modern" ones and for some reason these new routers won't allow connection to an iPod/iPad etc.  As yet I cannot confirm this or otherwise and unless someone comes up with a bright idea I'm left with the feeling that unless the network administrator recognises that he/she needs to create a network that works with iPads/iPhones etc we're doomed.  I noticed that the next table over using a PC had no problems!  Grrrr.

  • Trying to re-join a known wifi network

I have issue sometimes with my iPhone or iPad to rejoin a known wifi network.
For instance each morning I am connecting my iPhone to a public transport free wifi. My phone recognises and connects to the wifi however it cannot connect to the internet, because the safari browser is not launched automatically as it should.
I have tried to "forget the network" and try again but that did not work. I have switched my phone off and on again, no result.
I have same problem in hotels when I use the hotel wifi. When I come back to hotel and try to reconnect, wifi is connected, but web browser does not launch therefore I cannot access the hotel website to register and accept terms and conditions for instance.....
Should I bookmark the website when the web browser is launched the first time when I register, so that I can access the website again if it does not launch automatically ?

I stay in various hotels each month throughout the year and have occasional problems logging on to the local wifi.  I consulted an Apple Genius staff once about this and it was suggested to reset the network settings.  I tried this and it does help although I forget about it after a few months of using dozens, perhaps hundreds of different wifi hotspots.  Once you experience problems, go to General in Settings, hit Reset at the bottom then hit "Reset Network Settings".  After a few seconds all stored settings regarding past wifi connections will be erased.  By starting fresh like this you may have better luck.

Thanks for the responses, they have been very illuminating!
This is very disappointing from The Carphone Warehouse. If they had mentioned this when I went into their stores, I wouldn't have completed the purchases. I bought two phones at separate outlets and neither of them told me this.
I have been in contact with T-Mobile already as I thought they had sneakily applied a software update that locked the phone. They have denied locking it and suggest that it is something that Apple do. Their solution was a factory reset.
I have a call logged with Apple this afternoon, so will see what they suggest. Hopefully they will give me something that I can take to The Carphone Warehouse or T-Mobile.

  • What is WiFi networking in location settings of IOS 8?

Can anyone tell me .What is WiFi networking in Security>Location settings>system services > WiFi networking, does for IPHONE

Yes, this aears to be a bug in the App Store. I've had mine stuck on something different. But I can type a new entry and do a different search. So even though the old search term comes back later I've lost no functionality. So I ignore the bug. It will eventually get fixed, I hope.
