Inconsistently discovers wifi networks

Every since I've owned my iPhone 5S, it's had trouble finding wifi networks.
Usually, what happens is that I click on settings, WLAN, and then a long list of networks pops up. If I select any of those networks then back out, or if I select a passworded network and accidentally put the wrong password on it, I'm not given the option to see ANY of the wifi networks again for another 5 or 10 minute. It just stays on the screen saying "Choose a network... " with the little "working" symbol to the right and discovering nothing. Restarting the phone sometimes helps. Turning the WLAN on and off does absolutely nothing.
Anyone else have this issue?
I've also reset all network settings twice now to no avail.
It's not a problem if the first time I see a list of networks I know which one to join, and it's not a problem if I get the password correct on the first try - but other than that I'm screwed and unable to find networks after that point.
Note that even when it says "Choose a network... " and is showing nothing (when a minute before it showed 7 networks), I can still go to Other, and if I type in the name of the network, security type, and password all correctly, it connects instantly, even if it wasn't seen before.
This happens at my own home, my work, every coffee shop I've ever been to. I live in China now, but it has happened both here and when I was in the U.S.

Interesting hypothesis B-rock.  I could try contacting the network administrator but my guess is that I'll be met with a blank look when I ask for that! Still can't be bad to try!
Another piece of "anecdotal" evidence for you.  At the local garden centre (which is part of a chain) I used to be able to connect - no problem.  Then suddenly all connections failed - at all locations.  I am leaning towards believing that they have changed routers to more "modern" ones and for some reason these new routers won't allow connection to an iPod/iPad etc.  As yet I cannot confirm this or otherwise and unless someone comes up with a bright idea I'm left with the feeling that unless the network administrator recognises that he/she needs to create a network that works with iPads/iPhones etc we're doomed.  I noticed that the next table over using a PC had no problems!  Grrrr.

Can someone help me? My iPad stopped discovering my HP AirPrint printer. So I cant print at all with no printer to slect. Both printer and iPad are on same WiFi network and connected.

Thanks so much pjl1213. I was struggling with the same issue and spent hours re-booting my ipad, iphone and the printer. And of course after re-booting the Actiontec Router everything was fine. Best to cover EVERYTHING in the re-boot.
    Thanks again.

  • Can't Connect to WiFi Network After Changing Encryption

I have an iPod Touch that no longer connects to my wifi network at home.
Some background: I have an aipport extreme base station with three XP laptops, an iMac and a printer connected to it wirelessly. I use a WPA Personal password. My wife's iPhone connects without a problem.
I recently changed the password on the base station to WPA Personal because one of the laptops could not connect using WEP (solution to inconsistent hashing of 13 character password problem found elsewhere in this forum). Ever since changing the password, the iPod touch will not connect.
I have looked for, but cannot find the "Forget Network" button on the wifi network page on the iPod touch (I understand that button appears after you have successfully connected to the network). I have reset the iPod up to and including removing all data.
When I go into the settings>wifi menu, I see the network's SSID. When I input the password, I get a "cannot connect to . . . " message.
Any ideas on how to solve this problem?
    Thanks

This does not work in my case.
Situation: we have wifi at home using WPA encryption.
The iPod Touch 8GB connected seamless to this network and anything was ok. After some days i could no longer connect, the iPod told me "connection to network 'networkname here' failed". Deleting the network and reenter the (correct) passphrase was no help, but changing the SSID on the router was helpful: the iPod could connect again ... for several days.
Now things stopped working again. Resetting network settings did not help either.
The iPod can see the network, is asking me for the passphrase and after several seconds telling me: can't connect. On the router log i don't even see a dhcp request, but other laptops work fine with the same wifi network.
That's a mess, i cannot and will not change the SSID every some days just to get the iPod working again.

  • Using Airport Express as separate wifi network vs extender with Time Capsule?

Hello all.  I recently converted my home computer network from Windows/PC based to an iMac with Time Capsule.  On my previous setup, I had a Cisco/Linksys router with wifi, and I also had two Airport Expresses in separate areas of the house where the Linksys had a weak signal.  Obviously, I had the Airport Expresses set up as "separate" wifi networks, as they could not be used as network extenders with the Linksys.  This setup seemed to work really good, as the 3 wifi networks provided good blanket coverage in all parts of the house.  Each network also seemed to "hand-off" to the other pretty well, meaning that Airport Express 1 would show as the active network when you moved far enough away from the Linksys (or insert any of the network names here, even though I'm pretty sure that the device accessing the network has more to do with this than the networks themselves).  In particular, the speeds that I got from the Airport Expresses actually eclipsed the speeds that I would get from the Linksys wifi.
My issue is that after I converted everything, I left the Airport Expresses as "separate networks" and essentially removed the Linksys/Cisco router and replaced it with the Time Capsule.  So I still have 3 separate wifi networks, just like before, with the Time Capsule network taking the place of the Linksys wifi network.  While the Linksys and the Airport Expresses seemed to co-exist together nicely, I get the feeling that the TC and the AEs are somehow working against each other or at least competing with each other for bandwidth.  For example, if I have my iPhone right beside my iMac and TC, and I run a speed test on the iPhone using the TC wifi network, I get download and upload speeds in the range that I am expecting (30-40 mbps download).  However, when I walk down the hallway to the other end of the house, the TC tends to remain the dominant wifi network, even when I am in the same room with one of the AEs (this is where they used to "hand off" nicely between networks).  When you run a speed test in this location still on the TC wifi, the speed drops down to 5-7 mbps, and worse, I believe the signal becomes inconsistent because webpages and data often seem to be freezing in the middle of downloading.  I understand that the distance from the TC is causing this, because my solution has been to manually switch from the TC to the closest AE, and that fixes the issue.  Run a speed test after I manually switch to the closest AE when I am in the same room as an AE, and the speeds pop back up to 30-40 mbps.
My question is this:  would switching the AEs to "extenders" of the TC wifi network help this issue?  Honestly, my laziness was one reason that I did not do this when I setup the TC initially, because I have several devices that access the AE wifi networks that I'd have to update with the new network name and password.  Everything was working great before, and I just didn't want to upset the apple cart.  But if I have created an unfriendly environment between the TC and the two AEs, I certainly have no problem making the change now.  I just wasn't sure if making this change would fix my problem or not.  I know it's a mundane thing, but I'd like to be able to roam the house without continuously having to manually switch between wifi networks to get a consistent signal.
Sorry if this is a simple issue.  I am admittedly a newbie with the TC and its interaction with the AEs.
    Thanks in advance!!

It is not a simple issue.
Exactly which method works best is going to take some experimentation.
The way you are trying to set it up as a roaming network is generally considered the best.. but the devices like iphones do not hand off neatly.
It is interesting that they in fact used to hand off better using the Linksys.. which could be due to its poorer range. The new TC having so much better range is causing the phones to not swap "towers" to the local express.
Test it with a Mac laptop.. as generally they do hand off better.
I cannot quite figure out if you are using roaming correctly. All the wireless should have identical names, with identical security setting and passwords.
The only thing that should be different is wireless channels on each item. And you are likely just using auto anyway.
So each device is creating a wireless network. And for 2.4ghz one should be channel 1, then another channel 6 and another channel 11. For 5ghz it will be same idea but there are more channels available.
When you extend wireless, everything runs the same channel. But the wireless speed is reduced. You must disconnect ethernet to each of the expresses.. and the problem is your 30-40mbps will reduce permanently to 15-20mbps for all clients. So take your choice.. 15-20mbps for all clients forced to double hop is better than 5-7mbps which you experience now when you walk around.. although I am not sure how much browsing you do whilst walking. You may need to compromise which is the better out of several not great alternatives.
I would have a test.. which is wrong btw.. but I have heard that it works.
In your roaming network at the present time. Try setting each router to a manual wireless channel.. and fix all of them the same. So for instance, set 2.4ghz to channel 11. Try fixing the 5ghz as well, say the TC is defaulting to 149, it might not actually respond to manual wireless channels.. you will need to test this.. say set to 36 or 40 and see if the TC is actually changed.. if not just set all the expresses to 149 as well. What you are doing is trying to reinforce the wireless in each area.. but this is actually wrong. So all will have same wireless name and same security wpa2 personal is the only valid one.. and all the same password.
Test with a few clients and see if the results give you decent local speeds as well as better roaming.. once you decide which to do, then you will need to change all the clients.

  • Automatically conncet to WIFI network

Yet another new behaviour since upgrading to 3.0, my ipod touch doesn't automatically connect to known WIFI networks anymore..
Used to be when i was in range, i would hear a little chime and it would connect then get push notifications of mail etc..
now i have to go to settings, wifi, connect to network.
anyone have any clue how to fix this?
(yes, already tried forget this network, reset network settings, and restore from new)

I don't have an answer, but I am having the same problem. My G2 iPod has been inconsistent in connecting to known networks under OS 2 and 3. For a few days, it might find networks it has been connected to before, but then it seems to "forget" them. Right now, I'm sitting beside an Airport extreme with two Macs connected via wifi (they connect without fail on startup), and the iPod can't even see the network, let alone remember it. If I tap Other, I can connect. It makes no difference whether "ask to join networks" is on or off. Today, I have "ask to join" turned off, and when I wake up the iPod, it sees the wifi network (because I just connected to it manually earlier today), but I have tap it to get it to join. If I turn "ask to join" on, and let the iPod sleep, when I wake it up, it can't see the network at all, and I have to manually join.
I'm sure there is an explanation, but whatever it is, I have to conclude that joining a network any number of times, does not establish it as a known network, and that the iPod does not have wifi connectivity particularly well implemented -- obviously not as well as the Macs I have in the same room.
Maybe there is a page where a list of "known" networks can be displayed? If so, I don't know where that is.
What makes a network "known"? Obviously, joining it is not enough. What does it take?
Wifi connectivity on the iPod is a big disappointment on an otherwise remarkable product.

    Hi Peter,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums.  I understand that you are trying to use the new HP AiO Remote app for Windows phones to print to your Photosmart 7150 printer.
The Photosmart 7150 printer only supports USB connectivity, I have include the Photosmart 7150 Printer Specifications for reference.  To be able to use the HP AiO Remote app the printer needs to be connected to a wireless network.
If you accidentally typed the incorrect printer model, please let me know which make/model/product number of HP printer that you have. How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?

  • Can there be a hardware issue on the iPad that causes you to unable to join wifi networks or only if you are within 5 feet of routers?

I used to be able to connect my iPad to my house wifi network walking all over my house then one day it stopped.  When i tried to connect to my network I would get an message saying "Unable to Join network".  I found that if i was within 5 feet of my router it would connect and work just fine.  At the same time I tried it at multiple other networks that I have before (girlfriends and other friends houses) and could not connect with same issue.  Only place I can connect is my work wifi.
Can connect to wifi with my iPhone with no issues

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
Try This - Renew IP Address:
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

I have an Epson printer on a Wifi network. Windows 7 desktop is running the network, and my wife's HP Win 7 laptop prints to it just fine. My MacBook Pro running Yosemite won't detect it, and I do have the latest driver installed. I didn't have a problem when I had a Canon Pixma on the network, but when I replaced it with the Epson nothing seems to work. I go to add a printer to the queue and only the FAX function of the printer shows up - not the WS-4530 print function. Does anyone out there have any suggestions?  Please??? :-)

    Hi Kelly,
As someone who has to print from my Mac to a networked printer at home all the time, I can certainly understand how frustrating it must be to have that fail to perform as expected. Let's see if we can get you up and running.
I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

Can not see my airport on the list of WiFi networks and is blinking orange all the time. Tried to reset several times.

Do you have a Mac or idevice for setting up the Express? It does require a later utility than is available for windows.
You might be able to setup with the v5 utility in windows but there is no guarantee.
You should use a simple name both for the base and the wireless. eg AEXgen2 base name and AEXwifi for wireless name.. that is if you get access.

  • How to set up guest wifi network on 1200 series APs with disclaimer web portal?

I've been thinking about this one for awhile. I want to set up a guest wifi network without any security (AES / TKIP) that allows guests to connect. Ideally, their web browser would be redirected to a web portal containing legal disclaimers, and they would need to accept the terms and conditions to use the guest wifi. I would also like to have them be required to visit the web portal again every 8 hours after that to accept the terms and conditions again.
I have a Cisco 1240AG access point already. What else do I need to make this work?

I don't believe you can do this just with an AP running in autonomous mode you would need to have a WLC to configure the splash page.
    Have a look here:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/7-0/configuration/guide/c70/c70users.html#wp1049273
Alternatively you can use software running on a PC/Server. Something like http://www.antamedia.com/hotspot/

The AirPort Express device should be configured to join the wireless network of your router.

  • How do I setup my Airport Extreme so that I can extend the coverage of my existing AT&T wifi network?

How do I setup my Airport Extreme so that I can extend the coverage of my existing AT&T wifi network?

Start by establishing a permanent fixed Ethernet cable connection from one of the available LAN <-> ports on the ATT modem/router to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme.
Ethernet cabling can be run up to 300+ feet or 100 meters, so you should be able to locate the AirPort Extreme exactly where it will be needed to provide more wireless signal coverage.
Configure the AirPort Extreme to "create" a wireless network using exactly the same wireless network name, same wireless security setting, and same wireless network password that the ATT wireless is using.
The final step is to insure that the AirPort Extreme is configured to operate in Bridge Mode, so it will work correctly with the ATT modem/router.
If you need more specific steps, we need to know what operating system you are using on your Mac or PC. If you have a Mac and do not know which operating system it is using.....click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen and then click About This Mac, and post back with the OS X version number that you see there.

  • HT201945 How do I use my time capsule on an existing WIFI network?

How do I use my Time Capsule on an existing WIFI network?

Use an Ethernet cable to connect from one of the LAN <--> ports on your existing wireless router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule and then use the setup "wizard" on your Mac to configure the Time Capsule.
It will suggest that you set up the Time Capsule to create a new wireless network. If you don't want or need another wireless network, you can turn off the wireless function of the Time Capsule and use it as wired hard drive only.
Leave the Ethernet cable connected at all times. If you need to locate the Time Capsule in a different area, you can put it anywhere that the Ethernet cable will reach up to about 330 feet or 100 meters.
The only exception to using an Ethernet cable would be if your existing wireless network is provided by another Apple router. Then.....you would have the option to have the Time Capsule connect using wireless and extend the network, although using a wired connection would still be the better way to go in terms of performance.

If others are having problems getting on the network, it's probably a problem on the network, but I think you understand that. If the network is broken and it doesn't belong to you, the only way to 'bypass this' is to disconnect from the WiFi network and use 3G. That or complain to the manager... I doubt that will do you much good. They can barely figure out how to fry eggs, much less do anything with their network.

  • Why will my wifi network not work on windows 7 after bootcamp installation on my MacBook Pro?

I have recently used bootcamp to install windows 7 on my MacBook. I downloaded the software and everything to install the bootcamp setup on the windows side as well and it seems to be working well, except for when I try to connect to a wifi network. It is a secure, strong network and every time I try to connect, the same message pops up saying "the 'local area connection' is experiencing driver or hardware related problems." What can I do to fix this and successfully get the internet running on my windows side?

I have come to the conclusion that the newest Macbook Pros are equiped with wifi boards that are not compatible with Windows 7. I'd be very interested to hear if Windows 8 works better!
