Stop Worrying! Macbooks are reliable and "worth it!" Just read!

Over and over again I read all of these questions from possible Macbook buyers wondering if it is worth it or if all of the problems pointed out on various forums (including this one) and review boards are true. I can't say that some problems aren't true because lets face it, it's a computer. But I would personally like to give a very positive review about my Macbook. I bought a White Core 2 Duo 1.83ghZ Macbook with an upgraded 1 GB of RAM and an upgraded 160 GB HDD shortly after their release. I have had none, and i repeat not a single one of the problems that everyone asks about. No palm rest discoloration, no LCD screen problems, no heat problems, no random shutdowns, no melting of the charger (and I admit I leave it plugged in almost constantly which is a no-no), no oddly clicking trackpad, and for the last time the edges are no so sharp that they pose any sort of problem to anyone who is reasonably normal. I have tons of extra apps and widgets and photos and songs and things of that nature on my Macbook and it still boots up from cold in a smooth 25 seconds or less, no matter how long it has been turned off. I would advise an upgrade in memory from 512 MB to at least 1 GB for anyone who will be using their Macbook to run anything worth running well. Other than that, calibrate your battery, perform regular maintenance and monitor things every so often and you shouldn't have any problems. I understand that everyone gets a faulty product every now and again but that is totally normal. You shouldn't be surfing support forums for information about anything. I for one have never really posted anything but very basic questions in this forum (although I was greatly helped every single time). That just shows that there are so many happy Macbook owners out there, like me, who may not even know this forum exists so therefore you wouldn't hear all of things great things about this awesome computer. I can honestly say this is the best computer I have ever owned, everything just works and I really enjoy that. So for all of you people wondering if it is worth it to buy a Macbook, from my personal experience from using one of the many problem-free Macbooks every single day, yes it is very much worth it and I know you will love your computer just as much as I love mine. I hope this helps anyone who was wondering, and if anyone else wants to represent their wonderfully working Macbooks please post so we can get rid of the negativity surrounding Macbooks. We owe it to all of the people on the fence about this product to inform them of the truth and allow them to own a great computer like we already do. Thanks and if anyone is skeptical (i.e. assume I work for Apple or anything else along those lines), feel free to email me at [email protected] with any questions if you are seriously contemplating buying a Macbook. That's how much I stand by this computer. I honestly and whole-heartedly recommend this computer to anyone who cares. Nice day everyone!

Although I actually have a lot of issues with my MacBook, I still agree with you. I bought a black C2D MacBook for my son for christmas, and he is just thrilled by the quality and speed after 1 month of 100% hassle free heavy usage.
I have one of the first white MacBooks, and I assume that there are more issues with the absolutely first generation. I was taking this into account when I bought it: It was a completely new design. I've heard of businesses which bought quite a lot of these in june and have no issues with them at all, so I still think I just was unlucky with mine, and hope that Apple will eventually replace it if the (newly reemerging) problems persist.
The MacBook is a great computer, and IMHO it's so close to its specs to the MacBook Pro and has a few advantages (more compact and a - I think - better screen), so I honestly think it's the best value-for-money computer you can buy.

    Good Morning,
I have a MacBook Pro 15" and my warranty just ran out! I partitioned my harddrive into two partitions, one with Snow Leopard and the other with microsoft. This morning I turned on my Macbook Pro and it will not boot into Snow Leopard. I shut it off took out the battery, reinstalled the battery. Then I put in the Snow Leopard CD and booted up to disk utility and The Snow Leopard partion would not show up?? I do see the microsoft partion.
I also rebooted holding down the shift key and still no Snow Leopard
Could you please tell me what I can do, what keys do I press on restart any advice to get Snow leopard back.
    thank you.

Have you restarted holding down the Opt key?  That procedure should give you a gray screen with all of the partitions that exist.  Then select the SL partition for boot.  Also go to System Preferences and Startup Disk, unlock the lock and select the SL partition as the default boot partition, then relock.

  • Equium M50-244: what upgrades are possible and worth to do?

hi all, i have just got a EQUIUM M50-244, i got it yesterday from pc world, and im well please with it!
but i was wondering if there are any worth while upgrades? is it possible to clock the cpu? im looking at more memory, is there a limit to what i can fit? also is a bigger hard drive possible? any thing else thats worth doing please let me know
    thanx, your friendly local snake

    Hi
General its not possible to upgrade the CPU or the graphic card but you can upgrade the memory and the HDD on this notebook.
You can upgrade the memory to max 2048MB memory (2x1024MB) and you can use a HDD with the 80GB maybe also 100GB.
    The supported memory modules are:
    DDR2-400/533 256MB (PA3389U-1M25)
    DDR2-400/533 512MB (PA3412U-1M51)
    DDR2-400/533 1GB (PA3411U-1M1G)
    Hope I could help.

  • HT3964 How do I stop my Macbook from overheating and making a fan noise?

My Macbook Pro 17 Inch keeps overheating and making a fan noise after I use it for... say... an hour.
I use Windows on my Macbook, is this related to my problem? If not, do I need to get my fan replaced?
It gets annoying whenever I play a game, and then suddenly my Mac goes to sleep for no reason (probably due to overheating).
The fan noise is kept to a minimal when I use a web browser, or listen to music, but it goes up when I start an application.

Since overheating is something the computer tries to prevent, it will shut down if the temps get too hot, thus your experience is not overheating.
You can have a look at Activity Monitor (Menu Bar > View > Show All Processes) and then sort by CPU to see what the culprit is during downloading.
A hot Mac is not that big of a problem, the fan takes care of the heat and if you do not mind the noise, then that is it.

  • Setup Airport Extreme for the home wireless - MacBook Air, Pro, and iPad connect just fine.  Wireless will not work to Windows 7 and Vista machines - network seen, tries to connect, but fails after entering WPA key.

Can't get Windows Vista or Windows 7 laptops to access internet via Airport Extreme.  Works fine with security on MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and iPad.  Brand new Airport, bought today.  Windows machines worked fine with existing, relatively modern Cisco home router.    The Windows machines see the wireless network, prompt for password, and then cannot connect.  Have tried all sorts of things with Windows machines, deleted existing networks, etc. even tried guest login with no security on the Airport - no luck.  Windows XP machine directly (wire) connected works fine.  Magic Jack works OK.  Light is green on the front.

Thank you very much for your help @Sunshyn2005!!!!! I think we're good to go now!

  • RUP AppData\Local and AppData\LocalLow are Roaming and from everything I read, these DO NOT Roam by Default

    I guess that's it in a nutshell.
From the test GPO I created, I explicitly tell the policy NOT to allow these two directories to roam but they continue to roam. We did have XP at one time but now everything is Windows 7 and even the new profiles show the V2 as the extension of the folder
    name.
Main reason we don't want these folders to roam is because of the amount of data in these folders including OST files which takes up a lot for some users.
I just can't figure it out. I have a Brandy New GPO with a test OU linked to it so that leads me to the Default Domain Policy for the forest but there is basically nothing set in this. Just a few security items. I can list if you'd like to see. And I have
a couple of test user VMs that I am using that reside in this test OU. But nothing I try works. Local and LocalLow continue to roam to the network profile folder.
Is there anything I can look at that  I may not have looked at yet?
Thanks. This is frustrating. I want to dump the entire lot of RUP's...

    Hi,
Based on your description, we can check Applications and Services Logs in Event Viewer to see if some related services got crashed.
Besides, we can install the following hotfix on a troubled computer to see if it can fix the issue.
The desktop does not load and only displays a black or blue background after you log on to a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

  • HT201250 My macbook pro crashed and I had to install a new hard drive. I restored from Time Machine backup all the files from my old hard drive onto my new one.

Does it really back up the whole new drive or does it only back up what's been added? It seemed like it was doing the whole thing when I tried it. I stopped it. Don't want to use up all the space on my external. Is there something else I need to do or did I mess up by not doing the migrating thing? thanks!

If you installed a new hard drive, it has nothing on it and yes TimeMachine is going to take forever to restore everything back.
I guess you'll have to erase and start over again now.
Too bad, you should have made bootable clones in addition to TimeMachine, they can restore in a hour or two depending upon content, they are also option key bootable.
TimeMachine has to go through and calculate all the files it needs to bring forward, the files are strewn all over the drive. The read heads are moving all over the platters all the time from fast sectors to slow ones, not matching what's occuring on the internal drive.
With a clone the files are defragmented and optimized, the drive reads one file, moves the heads a tiny bit and reads the next all the while transferring exactly to the internal drive, they are more in step with one another, thus it's much faster restoring from a clone than TM.

  • Is there any reliable and free add-on for itunes that automatically adds lyrics to songs in my library?

I'm trying to find an iTunes add-on that will automatically add lyrics to all the songs in my library. They are ripped in AAC format.  I'm using XP with SP3, and iTunes 10.5.  As I have over 6000 tracks in my library, you can understand that adding them all individually would take the kind of patience a saint would envy.
So far I've tried and add-on (the name of which escapes me) which claims to be compatible with iTunes, WMP and WinAmp but, in reality, only works with WMP - and the songs it scans aren't actually in my library.  I've also tried SoundCrank but every time I try to install the **** thing it tells me I need to install a version of iTunes that is 7.0.1 or later.  I did mention I'm using 10.5 right?
Are there any other alternatives that are reliable and free (or at least really cheap)?

This can point you to authorized repair places. But doesn't list unauthorized ones, which may be what you're wanting.

  • CC and Photoshop CC just do not want to properly work.

Okay so this is starting to become a major problem which I am getting stressed out about and it is taking a huge chunk out of my ability to work.
    OS: Win 7 (x86)
Last Thursday I purchased CC and downloaded Photoshop CC, everything installed fine aside from this weird glitch that CC causes to "explorer".
---- After CC finishes installation it crashes "explorer". The toolbars are gone, you cannot right-click the desktop or do anything. Basically I have to go in to Task Manager, end the "explorer" process and restart it to get it all to come back.
After CC shows back up and that is out of the way I download Photoshop CC without problems (right? yeah, whoo hoo...kinda.)
---- All I have to say is that thank god that my plugins (Eye Candy and brushes do not get removed when I have to use this damn cleaner tool every time. See below for explanation on cleaner tool...)
Photoshop finishes downloading, I launch it and everything is fine. At least for that night. The problem starts when I shut my computer down and start it back up in the morning. From Friday till Sunday I did not turn the computer on or do anything (as I was away for the weekend), yet when I turned everything on Sunday night I come to find out that the applications just do not work for whatever reason. CC refuses to launch and it's icons are blank, Photoshop refuses to launch and it's icons are blank. I go into my computer to find the folders to see what has happened and sure enough the files for all that stuff are still there but anything ending with .exe has a blank application icon and will not launch whatsoever. Strange, right? Hell I even tried to open everything in Administrator mode and it still wouldn't fix it. The only difference between trying to run it normally and trying to run it through Administrator mode is that with Photoshop it says this: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions." then asks me if I want to remove all the icons.
    Uh...what? Seriously?
So I figured there was a botched install. I remove all of CC and Photoshop CC using the Adobe Cleaner tool to get rid of everything and start over with reinstalling everything again. Same issue happened with CC crashing "explorer" and all that, installed Photoshop CC without an issue... everything ran fine then I shut the computer down for the night only to reboot Tuesday and the same thing happens. At this point enough is enough, I contact support and deal with a huge process of checking files and all that for almost FOUR HOURS with this lady on tech support, including having her remote desktop my computer to watch. We basically did the same thing from the night before to remove all the files and redownload everything. I figure at the end of the session that we actually got it fixed - I mean come on, the tech person went out of their way for four hours to help resolve this. (And yes, the lady was great about it.) She figured that the Application Manager file was corrupted and wasn't accepting my license or something; thus we also redownloaded a new version of that.
Yeah...no... I got back on today and the SAME thing happened.
I cannot work with this product in this way, something has to be changed/patched/updated or something to resolve this issue asap. I literally cannot do my work, I cannot progress with my projects or do anything with this mess.
None of the people that I have spoken to can figure out what this issue is. I have done no updates to my computer system or any of that in between installs either. I literally remove the products, install the products, and then shut the computer down. I honestly am about to give up...

Touchdown has that option. It is a great app and worth the money.

  • Destructive and non-destructive buffer reads on branch wires

I was asked this morning what are "Destructive and non-destructive buffer reads on branched wires" are.
I was at a loss at first and the I thought some and read a posting by Jim that inspried me.
My first thought was the case of an array wired to a replace array element and an index array function. I that case the the index has to execute before the replace array element because the replace re-uses its input buffer. Not really detructive but seemed close.
There is also the case of a buffer (like a string) being wired into a CIN and the same buffer being re-used be the CIN to return the result. The CIN "destroys" the original values.
Jim mentioned the concatenate string having to destroy the buffer
s hold the strings that are concantenated and moved to another buffer.
Also when I do a AI read the buffer I read from is destroyed after I read it. Similarly with reading from VISA and the like.
What does the above phrase really mean and are there other examples that I have missed?
    Trying to learn something here,
    Ben
    Ben Rayner
I am currently active on.. MainStream Preppers
    Rayner's Ridge is under construction

That phrase may have been describing a combination of factors. Documentation from NI points out that if a wire branches, LabVIEW will try to avoid making a copy of the data, including scheduling (as in your example) read operations on branch A before write operations on branch B if possible. Since branch A doesn't tamper with the data, no copy is necessary.
The author of a CIN or DLL could indeed choose to create his function in such a manner that it uses the same physical buffer in memory for input and output. This is by no means the only way to return values from a function, but it's quite common for efficiency reasons. LabVIEW might even assume that a CIN or DLL always overwrites any buffer passed into it (and may therefore make a copy if a wire branche
s both to a CIN and somewhere else).
So to me, the phrase you cited connotes the G compiler's decision of whether or not a wire branch modifies the data (e.g., string concatenation, removing elements from arrays) or just reads it (e.g., an index or input to a calculation).

  • I have just gone from PCM to MacBook Pro retina and would like to now go to imac. Is it worth waiting for retina on imac and when will it arrive

I have just gone from PCM to MacBook Pro retina and would like to now go to imac. Is it worth waiting for retina on imac and when will it arrive

I'm not Klaus but can give an opinion on this part:
As a Mac man yourself do you think that the retina display is worth waiting for?
I'm 65, have used Macs since 1989, and struggle with displays, cataracts, and bifocals. What I've seen of the Retinas in stores is that text size gets sacrificed for image quality. There are quite a few complaints about Retina in the MacBook Pro forums about not being able to increase the size of menu text without it getting fuzzy.
My iMac 27-inch is about a year old and I can set the display res from its default of 2560x1440 to 1920x1080 and everything is sharp. I understand that handy trick will not work for either the older hi-res macbook pros or the Retinas, so I don't expect it for any other Macs.
Speculation on Apple policy and new product releases is actiually not allowed by the Terms of Use around here so I doubt you'll get an answer to the "when" part. Anyone who does answer "when" is either guessing it up or violating a non-disclosure agreement!   Apple plays its cards close to its vest and we average users only know "when" when Apple posts the announcement.
