Straining my eyes with Mail's tiny writing

I miss Outlook! There are very few things on my year-old Macbook that I find frustrating. The only one I can think of actually is the size of the writing in Mail. Ok, so I can write in 14 or 16 point type, but someone else has got to read that. And then when I receive an email in 12 point I have to squint, and I have good eyesight. Mail is just not designed for a 15 inch screen, or whatever I have (the middle of the three choices). Ok, I can do that thing on the mouse pad and zoom, but that only seems to work for mails received not for mails I am writing. Why is 12 point type by default so small in Mail?
Am I the only one with this problem?

Thanks very much, but that changes the actual size of the text as read by the receiver (as well as seen by me when typing).
No, it does not. What you do in Mail > Preferences > Fonts has no effect on what is seen at the other end.
Ironically, many people find this "feature" of Mail to be a problem and switch back to Entourage or Thunderbird, because they want to be able to set a default font which is seen at the other end, which Mail cannot do. Outlook 2011 became available Oct. 26 I think, replacing Entourage.
To tell Apple something, it's best to use the channel they have set up for that. Here you are just talking to other users like yourself.

the problem I have since I upgraded to Mavericks version 10.9.1
The problem appears only with Mail not with other programs, not even with my browser.
When I try to zoom the text of an e-mail I received or sent , I can no longer use the keys Command + to enlarge the text, although I can reduce it with Command -.
As I have a problem with my eyes, This is a serious matter for me.
When I write an e-mail, if I select text and press Command +, it just displaces the text to the right.
Now, my husband has a USB keyboard. If he connects it to my computer, his regular Command + does not work either, but  he uses the extended keyboard, then it works. Unfortunately, he needs it for a musical application which does not work with a wireless keyboard.

Firefox 3.6.4 and 3.6.6 use a process called, "plugin-container.exe" which was using up most of my CPU when I opened up multiple tabs that contained Adobe Flash files, and caused Firefox to lock up.
My solution was to use Firefox 3.5.10 which you can get from the Mozilla website at [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html]
I am using Adobe Flash 10.1.53.64 without any problem in this version of Firefox. Check the release notes, I believe it contains all the latest security fixes in "Firefox 3.6.4".
Hopefully, they will fix Firefox 3.6 in the next version (e.g. Firefox 3.6.7), until then you should probably use "Firefox 3.5.10".

  • Mail...writing changes to disk...taking forever!

My Mail has been rendered useless since Mavericks upgrade.  I have installed the initial patch and the most recent Mavericks update.  Same problem persists...
    Mail takes forever to load
Mail is always writing changes to disk
I love Mail - but it is useless now.  Frustrating.
Most of my mail accounts are Gmail.

I cannot cope with this any longer, I am using a MacBook Pro and the machine is unusable since upgrading to Mavericks. Mail is churning constantly and I cannot do anything else with the machine. Can anyone suggest a new email programme or either on Mac or PC? I am sorry Apple but you have failed me for the final time with this upgrade.

Hi, thanks for the answer, I did that already. Unfortunatly this doesn't help me at all, as I often forget to check the menu. For me composing the message is writing the text, the subject, the person to who is addressed and than press "send".
I often forget to check the "from", and this is a problem because the software select itself one of the accounts.
Isn't there a way at least to put as a default a blank field instead of one of the accounts? or an account which doesn't work so if I forget to specify the "from" I will be rnotofied that the message can't be sent.
I guess this could be a rather common problem for many people!
    Thanks

  • Apple TV strains my eyes

I have used WD TV Live for years but wanted something that I can "cast" to from my devices. I tried Google Chromecast when it came out but there was noticeable lag and watching the video strained my eyes. I eventually decided to get an Apple TV.
After using it for two days, I noticed that it strains my eyes too, even though it wasn't as noticeable initially. Although my wife told me she felt fine.
I have tried Apple TV on both of our TVs and it was the same. I have two AirPort Extremes at home and the Apple TV was very close to one of them and had excellent connection. My Internet connection shouldn't be the problem too at 60/10mbps.
I tried to mess around with my TV's settings but with the same settings, watching cable (TiVO), WD TV Live and Wii are perfectly fine. Watching videos on my iMac, iPad, iPhone and Android devices are all fine too.
Any suggestions before I return this thing? Thanks.

Looks fine on my system and havent seen any other such reports.

  • Major problems with mail

I have been experiencing many issues with mail recently. I've used mail for about 6 years with no problems so these have only occurred since I upgraded to osx leopard a few months ago.
In the last 2 weeks it has become worse - mainly I am not receiving all the emails people are sending me & not everyone I send emails to is receiving them. This is a bit of a problem since I use my .mac account for my business email. It's making me look incompetent to clients and potentially could be losing me work.
It's happening with my gmail and bt accounts through mail too. And when I emailed mac support but all they told me to do was read the article about changing the server port from 25 to 587 and tick ssl. They also said I could use webmail to check my .mac account - but guess what? - The same thing is happening on there!
On top of these I am having the following issues from time to time -
-Emails arriving hours or a day after they were originally sent to me.
-Some emails with attachments (All less than 6mb some only a few kb in size) not arriving to recipient!
-Emails with links to websites not arriving - even when sent up to 10 times... though I was able to send text only emails to the recipient at the same time to the same address from the same .mac account and these were received fine...!!??
-Messages with attachments taking abnormally long to send
-messages without attachments taking just as long to send - even when only one sentence in some cases!
-Emails that have sent and arrived to the recipient not showing in the sent items box...
-Recipients not able to download attachments as they are embedded in the email.
-Emails on occasion not being allowed to be sent. - in this case I changed the port number and followed instructions
from the official support page. Which worked for one email - but every time I tried to send an email I had to change it back again and so on. This lasted for 2 days. My friend had the same issue.
-Pop up box asking for password for several accounts and literally popping up the second after the correct password has been entered. Sometimes up to 20 times in a row - forcing my to close down the application in frustration!
-Being able to receive emails but not send from one account - despite settings all being correct and being possible to send from another computer!
These issues happen intermittently( except the last one) but are a lot of things to be wrong with such a basic and vital application.
It's obvious some of these issues are server related but is mac ever going to resolve them?
Any ideas or help would be greatly recieved.

I unfortunately don't have many answers but wanted to express that we are having the same problems at our office. We just switched to OS10.5 and Mail from OS10.3 and Entourage. We have done a complete re-install of all our information and software after "zeroing all data" to try to fix the issues we were having. It's been a very lengthy and time consuming process. Now that it's done and we're back up and running, it seems to have solved one of our major problems - we can now send from all accounts - BUT we still experience the following problems:
-mail asking us to re-enter the password multiple times per day for all accounts
-mail does not think our server is a secure server (but only sometimes and only for some accounts - each time it says this I tell it to "always trust this server" but that doesn't seem to work)
-mail doesn't like some email addresses in our address book. we are told that they are invalid email addresses and have to try to trick it by writing it in a different way, deleting the name, re-typing, clicking in a particular spot on the page after typing it in, etc., etc.) I've tried deleting all previous recipients but this doesn't work
    -mail crashes unexpectedly when quitting
I'd love it if someone could tell us when these issues will be addressed as I see a number of frustrated people on the discussion boards.

  • I am so frustrated with mail.  It keeps hanging and it's not synchronized across all my devices.  Is there a better app?

Am I the only one having such a frustrating time with mail?  I'm working along and suddenly if just stops responding.  If I wait long enough, it will come back to life, but who wants to work through 100 emails, that way?  Also, it is not always synchornized across my devices.  I forward all my accounts to icloud.

    Or this.  Same issue...

  • Foreign Language Spell Check with Mail

I understand that using Pages, one can set different languages for Spell Check, but I seem unable to do this when writing e-mail messages. Is it possible to type an e-mail in a foreign language, and set Mail or is it elsewhere - to have spell-check not underline every foreign word in red - but to actually correct real spelling errors in the selected language - other then English? And can I then I toggle back and forth between spell-check in various languages, as my correspondences take place in a number of languages?
    Thanks in advance,
    john

your suggestion is specific to Mail
Actually, any application that uses the basic text editing features of the OS will use the same spelling system. Pages seems to have its own spelling system that actually looks inferior (at least in my '08 version).
what if I am looking for Hungarian - a language not listed in the pop-up section.
You are going to have to do some research. There are a couple of options listed here: http://neowiki.neooffice.org/index.php/AddingAdditionalDictionaries
I have no idea if they will work.
A Google search suggests that Snow Leopard does have a Hungarian spell-check - but the question is - where?
I don't think so. The link above indicates that you may be able to add dictionaries, including one for Hungarian. The screenshots were old, so I'm not sure if it still works. It's all in Hungarian so that's all I can tell from the site.
And can it be used with Mail?
Yes. Once you get it installed into the OS spelling system, it will be available throughout the OS - except for those applications that have their own system.

  • When switching my iPhone on a message appears in black and white tiny writing on the top left hand corner. It displays the apple sign but won't let me do anything.

When I switched on my iPhone tonight it displayed the apple sign but in the top left hand corner a message appears in tiny writing in black and white and it doesn't let me go any further. I've tried holding both buttons down to reboot but it is still the same when I switch it back on.

Hi I can't read the message displayed as the writing is so tiny and cryptic. It starts with one line of text but continues down the page.

  • How do I use my iPhone's hot spot to send email with Mail ?

    Hi,
My land line is dead ... so no phone nor internet at home.  But I can use my iPhone'hot spot to get on the web from my iMac.  Great ... it works !
Oups !   I cannot send email from my computer using my iPhone's hot spot with Mail.
How do I do that ?
    Regards.

    Hi Templeton Peck,
Thanks for droping in my thread ...
Doesn't the fact that I can surf the web with my iPhone's hot spot and that I cannot use Mail normally has I normally do give you a clue what the problem could be ?
What other information can I give you other than normally I can surf and send email with my regular ISP.  Now that my ISP is dead I am using my iPhone's hotspot to surf the web awaiting that my ISP's connoection returns. Surfing is OK but I cannot send emails with through Mail.
When I want to send an email from my computer, I get a message asking me to select the the SMTP server.  Then I select my usual ISP server, but the message comes back telling me it does not work.
Is there any other configuration to do ?

  • Problems with Mail, Safari and iTunes after updating to 10.5.6

    Hi all,
after installing 10.5.6 I have problems with Mail, Safari and iTunes.
The time to open mails, websides and iTunes store is increasing dramatically since the update. If I open a webside parallel with Safari and Firefox, Safari needs minimum 15 times longer to open the complete side. Mails containing HTML-code also needs a long time to be opened. Tha same Problem with iTunes store. Connecting to the Store costs at least 30 - 40 seconds. And unfortunately for every iTunes store side I open. Its terrible
Any idea or workaroung to solve that problem?
    Regards
    Michael

First, run Disk Utility and repair permissions and then restart.
I installed the 10.5.6 Combo update. Sometimes things get "lost in the translation" when you use Software Update depending on your installation. Perhaps you can download 10.5.6 Combo from the website and install it from your desktop.

  • Problem with mail for exchange after update on E72...

    Hi everyone,
I updated Nokia E-mail to ver 3.9 on E72. Now I am facing  a problem with mail for exchange. I have configured gmail on mail for exchange. I recieve a warning that "unable to sync contact administrator if problem persist". It started to pop up just after the update was over and is very frustrating. Even previously i used to recieve mails instantly but now it generally takes half an hour for me to recieve them. I deleted and created mail for exchange several times but to no avail.
Also i am not able to automatically recieve mails other emails which i have configured. every time I have to manually download them everytime.
Can anybody suggest a way out.
    Thanks
    Anil

It could be a problem if you're using your network's connections...
I was on a Pay & Go tariff with o2 some time ago, and needed secure connections for various things, o2 told me they didn't provide secure connections on Pay & Go tariffs...
Could be worth checking with them to make sure it's supported.

The question mark means the computer cannot find a bootable volumes so can;t do anything, That, combined with annoying sounds, strongly suggests a failed hard drive.
You can ask a "genius" at an Apple Rtail Store to test it but I'm pretty sure the drive is kaput. I'm hoping you had your data backed up.

  • Having downloaded and installed the latest Maverick Ios I now have a problem with mail. All my mailboxes were in alphabetical order now they are arrange randomly under my mail account, sync does not rearrange them whilst the order in the ISP account is in

I have downloaded Maverick 10.9 and installed , now my mailboxes in mail are randomly arranged as opossed to being in alphebetical order from A at the top to Z at the bottom how do you rearrenge the mailboxes in an alphbetical order.
Sync with my provider Gmail does not rearrange them on my Imac

    Thanks for that .
My actual problem I may not have made very clear - sorry.
    i.e.
    [email protected]
    AA insurance
    Xero
    apple
    building
    insurance
    etc.
Shows the way the mailboxes are listed in the mail program under any particular provider, in my case I have three mail provider accounts with mail moved from the inbox to the appropraite mailbox eg [email protected] , Xero - where the incomeing mail is filed.
My problem is to arrange these mailboxes/folders in an alphabetical order under the [email protected] account
