Strange and aggravating startup/login problem

I hope I can explain this well enough: My G3 iBook booted and loaded normally this morning, but froze shortly afterward. Upon re-booting, the startup took forever (over 5 minutes) and finally, I was presented with a login screen. I typed in my name and password CORRECTLY, but got the "wiggle" saying it was not accepted. No matter what I do, my correct name and password are not accepted. From an external hard drive, I have run DiskWarrior and checked the iBook with TechToolPro, but no luck.
To make matters worse, the CD-ROM drive in my iBook is on the fritz, so I can't try the old Reset Password from the original system CDs.
Any ideas?
Thanks. .
iBook G3 500Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The lengthy restart after a forced shutdown/restart is due to a faceless version of Disk Utility. Repair Disk running during the startup process to check for directory damage.
Does the reference to "from an external hard drive" correctly suggest you have a bootable clone? Can you use Disk Utility while booted from the hard drive to check the SMART status of the drive? Do you have Applications/ Utilities/ Netinfo Manager on the external drive (manually resetting the netinfo database is something to attempt only as a last resort).
What versions of Disk Warrior and Tech Tool Pro do you have? For Tiger, I belive DW needs to be at 3.0.3 and TTP at 4.1.2
Can you boot into single user mode and run the Unix file system check utility fsck as described in Using Disk Utility and fsck?

I am having two problems with my ichat. My buddies dont sign online and I also experience the login problem where it opens and collapses many times and says that I have tried to logon too many times. Please help. I have searched this message board and thus far nothing that I have found has worked

Try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
Set the port to 443(press return/enter(you might have to tick and untick SSL for 443 to stick)).
    Log back in again.

Anybody can help me? If need more information pleas let me know. The firmware version is 4.1.110.33149 Regards Damy

    Hello DamyEr,
Search this manual for the word "reset" to find the procedure to reset your network/security settings:
    http://download.lenovo.com/nasupdate/manuals/ezmedia/ezmedia-4.1-en.pdf
If this fails to resolve your issue, I recommend searching some Windows forums for the error you are getting.
It could have something to do with security setting on your OS.

  • EP Performance Tunning and concurrent user login problems

    Hi all.
We have a EP , integrated with Windows AD and SAP R3.
In real situation, there will be 1000 users login in EP in 0.5 hours. And their operation time will be 6-8 hours, connect to R3 or other applications.
Is EP can support such concurrent user login scenario ?
if EP fails, is there some performance monitor tool or performance tunning issue ?

    Hi
EP supports this logon load, however it all depends on sizing and architecture!  Also the content of the STARTPAGE can be critical (make it "light").
If the portal fails, then often it is only one J2EE server process, which fails - so by having more server-processes will be an easy/minimum form of high availability.  A "real" HA solution must be considered if your business will not work without the portal og SAPGUI connections can be used as workaround/fallback in such situations.

  • How to handle WebIntelligence Login Problems?-Troubleshooting Guide needed.

    Hello experts,
We are using Business Objects XI 3.0 running on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise X64 Edition with Service Pack 2 and
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition (64-bit). We are using Windows Active Directory Authentication (Kerberos SSO)
and sometimes can't login to (java) InfoView using the http://<serveraddress>/InfoViewApp/logon.jsp and got either
the message "Unable to logon to infoview ,Please contact your system administator for assistance. Please close your browser before continuing",
or do not get any message and the browser window shows an empty login frame where the User name,Password and Authentication
are not displayed. (The login window doesn't give any idea what the problem is all about..)
In such cases, I try to login using the Web Intelligence Rich Client using the same username&password, and don't experience any problems.
Searching in Windows Event Viewer, can't find any hint. As my final attempt, I re-start the Server Intelligence Agent and Apache Tomcat,
if it still doesn't help, I re-start the operating system and hope the login problem gets solved..
Does anyone have trustful troubleshooting steps or better an official troubleshooting document (couldn't find any)?
    Best regards;

    Hi Bashir and wavery,
Thanks for your replies. Do you know where to download the update / packs ? I tried to find them under SAP Support Portal -> Downloads -> Business Objects Downloads, but couldn't find any matching item.

  • Strange OD Login problem

    Hey guys, here's the setup:
Snow Leopard Server 10.6.4, all available updates installed.
Leopard Client 10.5.8, all available updates installed.
Client is bound to server, shows up in workgroup manager, successfully gets the preferences I have set via workgroup manager.
2 users. Identical except for name and home folder location. Home folder is set in workgroup manager. Validated users have the same effective permissions for their respective home folders and home folder share. Neither user has a local account on client.
    The problem:
User one can login to client no problem. User two cannot. Login window shakes then nothing. No entries show up in client secure.log or in server open directory logs.
I'm kinda at a standstill here, I'd love to get some tips on where to look next. Any advice or ideas are welcome.
    Thanks!

    Hi Guys
I too had the same issue as everyone else in this thread but I have on my network found a solution to my strange OD login issue. My inital symptoms were the exactly the same as Stephens. After investigating the issue I found that I had 2 issues causing my login error.
    __1st Issue__
The user that could not log into this machine (ingest2) had once a managed mobile account preference which had been removed a while back but the account was still locally cached but not visible at the login window or system preferences>Accounts.
    1st Solution
I opened Terminal and logged in as root (sudo -s) and typed
    dscl .
then went into /Users and low and behold there was the same user ingest2 with the same uid as the Open Directory ingest2 user. Then I types
    delete <username>
to remove the duplicate user. Because when a user with the same short name/uid logs into a mac connected to the OD the local duplicate user will win for authentication every time.
Then I tried to log back into the machine at the login Window as ingest2 user. But I was not able to get in, the login window just shook. I then tried from another machine to login via ssh, which was successful but I got an error message about not having an available home directory.
    2nd Issue
After close investigation of the apparent home folder location I found that the permissions on that users home directory were incorrect and that is why the home directory was failing to open. The permissions were rwx-r-rx root wheel and if any other user account in the OD logged into this machine those were the permissions their home directory would also get. But on any other machine in the OD this was not the case with all OD users even ingest2.
    2nd Solution
What I did to fix this strange issue was to unbound the machine from the OD and remove the folder DirectoryServices in /Library/Preferences/. Then I rebooted the machine and rebound the machine to the OD and tried to login as the user ingest2.
The Ingest2 user was then able to log into the machine and the home directory had the correct permissions.
The client was Leopard 10.5.8 and the OD server was Leopard 10.5.8.

  • OS X Firefox profiles cache filling up since 18 June, today one of these files appears on desktop at startup and has become login item - what's going on?

E.g. In /Users/MYNAME/Library/Caches/Firefox/Profiles/4h26zusu.default/Cache/3/A3 there are many small files created over last 2 weeks (similarly in all other cache slots). But this file A013Bd01, which is a small picture, appeared in my login items and, on startup this morning (1 July) was open on the desktop in TextEdit - appearing as gobbledygook text. Why so many cache entries over last two weeks - is this a Fx 5.0 glitch?

  • What's causing these power-up and login problems?

I recently switched from Tiger to Leopard (installed by the repairers) and have encountered some power-up and login problems. Basically, my set up is that the computer automatically logs into a non-admin account, launches a Safari page, and then that's it - after checking the webpage, I logout of that account, into my main account, and work from there.
    In Tiger :
A few times quite recently the computer would freeze, either while Safari was launching / opening the webpage, or when I tried to logout. Force Quit didn't work (total freeze) so I would force power-off and switch on again, and things would be fine.
In Leopard, one of the following has begun to happen, about two weeks after I began using it:
    • The computer reaches the grey screen with an endlessly rotating gear wheel. (Power off / on again)
    • The computer logs in to the account; after selecting 'Log out...' I log out, but instead of giving me the login screen, it logs straight back into that account, and this happens every time I try 'Log out...'. (Use Fast User Switching instead to reach main account, where one or two software glitches prompt a Restart) This has happened twice.
    • This morning, the computer reached the blue screen where the pointer appeared - faded - appeared - faded etc endlessly (Power off / on again).
Clearly it is not the System - experiencing problems in both Tiger and Leopard proves that. Nor is it my HD - I've had a new one installed. It must therefore be a setting in my login account, though it's hard to see what : I only use that account for login, and a single launch of Safari, and it's been ok for years.
Should i create another login account and see if that solves the problem? By the way, the repairers did not give me any Leopard install disks, so please don't suggest that method of diagnosis. I only have the original Tiger disks.

    2. I don't know what Apple app(s) you refer to? As I said I've upgraded all the free ones, and iLife '06 is working (and I have the disks).
Look in your Applications folder: Any Apple app there, except for the ones you've mentioned. And all the built-in parts of OSX.
    3. They told me that I CAN do a full restore from a Time Machine backup (via Disk Utility apparently).
That should tell you something about the quality of their advice.
See: [Mac OS X 10.6 Help Recovering your entire system|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15638.html].
Or the *Restoring your entire system from a backup* section, towards the bottom of [Mac 101: Time Machine|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427].
Or look up +*Time Machine+* in Mac Help.
Or #14 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
And if there's a problem with your installation of OSX (which seems likely), or the Apple apps, you can't reinstall them, either.
    4. Having spent hours and hours getting the machine to work properly (upgrading Mail and sorting out Mail problems, upgrading Safari, re-upgrading iTunes and sorting out problems), I'm not prepared to spend hours and hours doing the whole thing in reverse to restore Tiger, including learning HOW to do that.
Correct; unless you have backups of the Tiger system, that's impractical at best.
So unless anyone has a reasonably simple, straightforward answer as to what this problem might be, it looks like I must live with it.
You have some sort of problem with your Mac and it's not going to get better on it's own. Most likely, it will get worse.
If you haven't, try the things recommended by Dale.
Also try running the +Apple Hardware Test.+ It's on one of the disc(s) that came with your Mac, and is tailored to it's particular hardware. The disk should have +Apple Hardware Test+ and instructions for running it printed in very tiny type.
I sympathize with your situation, but the repair shop violated the Apple license, and put you in an untenable situation. If they won't correct it by supplying the Leopard disc, you really should report them to Apple.
You need to purchase a retail copy of Leopard (not the gray discs that came with another Mac; they won't boot yours). They're not shown on the Apple Store website anymore, and eBay and other sellers get a premium for them, but AppleCare should have them for the original $129.

Try resetting the SMC and the PRAM.
    1. SMC
Read this and follow the instructions for your kind of mac:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    2. PRAM
    Follow the procedure below:
    1. Power down the machine.
    2. Locate the following keys on your keyboard in preparation for Step 4:
    command–option–P–R
    3. Press the ‘power on’ button.
    4. Immediately – and before the grey screen appears – hold down ‘command-option-P-R’ all together.
    5. Keep them held down until you’ve heard the start-up chime twice. After you release them you should hear it again, and hopefully your Mac will boot up as it should normally.

  • Login Problem with opendocument, flash and QaaWS

We have the following task: We have an application, an excelsius flash file in BOE (webI) and want to give the users a hyperlink to go directly to this application (after entering their user an password) on
the bo-login page. The application itself calls some web services (QaaWS) residing also in boe.
Our solution for the hyperlink at moment is to use the openDocument-Command  https://xir2.../businessobjects/enterprise115/desktoplaunch/opendoc/documentXML.jsp?cmdP1=Applikation01wid*&token=&cmd=askPromptView&cmdBlock=all and it works fine for flash-files,
    which don't use web services.
The Application with web services works fine, if we open them in WebI, t.i. they use the web service without prompting for user credentials again. But
the two solutions don't work together, t.i. when i ckick on the link to the application, i get the login page of BOE, after entering my user credentials
the flash file opens and asks for login again.
How will these two things work together? i can imagine two possibilities:
Using a different command (or some other parameters) in the hyperlink
Getting a fix for Xcelius or BOE.
    Any suggestions?
At moment, we use Xcelsius 4.5 Version 4.2.5.9 and BO XI R2.

Well, the link didn't solve the problem really, but gave the hint, somehow it should work und the solution is a bit surprising. After omitting the type parameter, it works )), so using the link
    http://<insertservername>:8080/businessobjects/enterprise115/desktoplaunch/opendoc/openDocument.jsp?sDocName=<insert name of the swf>
the normal login page opens and after entering the user credentials, the flashfile opens without asking user-credentials again.

A "BEX" error often indicates there is a malware process trying to inject itself into Firefox in an inappropriate way, so Windows shuts it down to protect you.
When I search for information on nsib.dll, it's inconclusive. For example: [https://www.virustotal.com/en-gb/file/7739cad2495359a139ef31062f54d683ce549bc4d7cca13f8d1cdaca86b3474d/analysis/ VirusTotal analysis].
Assuming it is a bad add-on, I suggest starting here:
Open the Windows '''Control Panel''', Uninstall a Program. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Take out as much trash as possible here.
You can "mop up" remaining issues with the scanning/cleaning tools suggested in this support article: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].
Finally, start Firefox in its Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key when double-clicking the Firefox shortcut/icon. In the small dialog that should appear, choose "Start in Safe Mode"
Then open the '''Add-ons page''' using either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions.
Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
    Does that clear it up?
