Strange and long list of udp listeners

Does anyone else running 10.6.4 have a large list of listening udp ports? I ran a netstat today and after the normal ports I expected to be open (ssh and iTunes) I saw a long list of 5 digit udp ports listening. I have my Apple Firewall on and I've unchecked the Airport Utility "listen for Airport Devices with a yellow light" check box.
When I turn off the network interface, the ports go away. They re-appear when I turn on a network interface, any network interface. Here's the list of ports listening:

I found the command lsof that you can use in the terminal (e.g. sudo lsof -i-N -P | grep UDP) and all these connections are from mdnsresponder. I tried shutting it off, because I really don't want to do multicast DNS. I'm perfectly happy asking my assigned DNS server for name to IP mappings but alas, Snow Leopard won't work with mdnsresponder shut off...
So I guess this question has turned into how can I turn off all the chatty network junk and still use standard network services. I don't want to broadcast details about my computer on networks I'm connected to and I only want to accept DNS answers from my configured DNS server.

  • Where do I send a long list of problems I have with non-functionality with the Lion OSX and new Safari for Lion.

In the past two weeks I have been documenting my Lion problems.
First, Arrows gone from finder windows; makes it difficult in comparing long lists of files in folder, or compare documents when reviewing line by line. This is obviously a change by people who do not compare long lists in windows comparing files between versions of projects ... the click to next screen is NOT equal to arrows.
Second, Finder Redreaw - doesn't. Move files to a fold, if there are a lot of files, they image of the files being moved remains in finder (see attached screen capture) until Finder is restarted and if COPY function is running. last files in Copy queue are not copied.
Screen capture 5 minutes after moving files to a folder - the selected file images are still in Finder after the move was completed.
Third, it is SLOW, particularly going to an "Attach file" in email, drawing the content of a folder to select an attachment is long enough for me to go to the kitchen, get a drink and come back. Just like the old days of OS7.
Fourth, shifting/recentering screen away from where I am working. Several programs, browsers, Adobe Photoshop/inDesign, and dear old Pages re center my screen - not to the center, but if I choose 30 of 70 images in a folder, it will shift … somewhere else in the folder instead of where I just clicked. If I am working on a document in inDesign or PhotoShop it will do the same - the cursor and screen drift elsewhere to find something it has been amused by. Sometimes it is a word, or a file, but often it is off the pastboard and on the etherial pasteboard on which the pages sit. Or if I'm zoomed in on an image, it moves to somewhere else.
I use a mouse and keyboard, both Apple wireless. I do not use a trackpad, but have a tablet/stylus I am afraid to put into the mix until this crap is stopped.
Fifth, SAVE AS… is gone. You must unlock, duplicate and edit the duplicate … and must rename it in Finder, or use EXPORT to save as the same format under a new name. SAVE AS… worked. Not broke, why fix it?
Personal Comment: The problems seem to be the triumph of coked up software engineers ooohing and aaahing over "Wouldn't it be cool if..."   Cool, if they were Microsoft, and required everyone change how they have worked on Macs for the past (almost) three decades. Triumph of brainstorming over functionality.
Sixth, I can't use Cocoa Booklet, but that really started in OSX 10.6 "Snow Leopard". Most of my X11/Cocoa programs stopped worked about that time. Apple is no longer supporting "open source"?
    But Wait! There's More...
Seventh, Tonight, trying to download a 1.7 gig archive onto a disk where 280 Gigs were supposedly free, it would not download because, according to the wonderful new Safari and the wonderful new Lion, there is not enough disk space to download a 1.7 gig file in a mere 280 Gigs of free space.
I might be able to move Snow Leopard onto the iMac, but my deciding factor was that Apple, in its wisdom, decided to make iBook Author unable to run under Snow Leopard. So moving to Snow Leopard means I have lost the ONLY benefit I get from the new computer and the new system.
    This really stinks.

When i double click on Mac HD the view has changed and my user name is no longer listed on the left. How can I reset this?

Do a factory reset .. nothing will be deleted from your backups and you will be able to get access to them again.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

Just recently my Apple TV quit listing the ITunes in the option bar and no longer lists Netflix and other many other options in the other option bar.  I tried to unplug the device, but nothing helps. Any ideas?

Glad to hear I am not the only one with these issues. Seems as though this is an Apple issue. I have an ATV 1st gen.  Can not purchase or preview music via iTunes on my  ATV. Can not listen to Internet radio on the ATV nor on iTunes on my MAC. for whatever reason videos can be previewed on my ATV but none can be purchased. I have had the purchase problem for awhile but now the Internet radio is new as of 2/26.

Usually if you have some kind of hardware failure there is some beeping during POST or most motherboards now have LED indicators to produce and error message based on the type of failure
So if its bad memory, not place properly, mismatched, processor not inserted properly, mismatched voltage or voltage connector not present etc it beeps or generates the error id.
Power supplies can be tested for failure. There are some walk throughs for testing just them with a switch, paperclip or a jumper (I'd suggest not doing this if you are not familiar with the dangers of electricity).
Memory can be tested with memory diagnostics programs like Memtest+
Processors can overheat if the proper precautions have not been taken usually you will get a POST beep or error code for that.
If the motherboard has no response then do the basics first:
Check power connectors and power supply. Once you determine that is not the case move on to other items like graphics cards in all the way or memory.

  • I am using Numbers on my iPhone5 and cannot get the app to do a simple (SUM) calculation.  It shows the formula correctly in the cell, but all I get for my long list of numbers to add is 0.  How can I get this to work?

I am using Numbers on my iPhone5 and cannot get the app to do a simple (SUM) calculation.  It shows the formula correctly in the cell, but all I get for my long list of numbers to add is 0.  How can I get this to work?

Oaky, at least we got that far.  Next step is to determine if all those "numbers" are really numbers.  Changing the format to "number" doesn't necessarily change the string to a number. The string has to be in the form of a number.  Some may appear to you and me as numbers but will not turn into "numbers" when you change the formatting from Text to Number. Unless you've manually formatted the cells to be right justified, one way to tell if it is text or a number is the justification. Text will be justified to the left, numbers will be justified to the right.
Here are some that will remain as strings:
    +123
123 with a space after it.
    .123

my desktop and screen saver option is no longer available in the system preferences. meaning it is no longer listed. how would i go about getting it back?

If you used system cache cleaning software it can mess up Apple software.  Stop using such software.  Remove Mackeeper if present using these directions:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3691
If you started typing something in the search field of the System Preferences, it might be hiding.   Quit and reopen System Preferences to be sure it isn't hiding because it is searching for another panel.
Lastly, if none of the above apply, go to your hard drive -> System -> Library -> PreferencesPanes folder and see if it is hiding there.  If it isn't, get your 10.5 installer disc that installed 10.5 on your Mac, and restore it with http://www.charlessoft.com/ 's Pacifist, and then run the 10.5.8 combo update to ensure the version matches the operating system.

It seems pretty clear to me.
When you turn off your primary account the only active account the phone can send via is your Gmail account, and that's what you're seeing.
The question is why do you need to turn off the primary account.. which you answer:
When that is set up as the primary server and turned on I get a message that says "the recipient was rejected by the server
That's because your ISP (megalink) is using access controls to manage who sends mail through their mail server. The first thing they're probably doing is using IP address restrictions - essentially saying they'll only relay mail from any machine on their network (including dialup/DSL/etc. customers), but you're not on their network, you're on an AT&T (or Verizon) 3G connection which isn't in their IP address range, and therefore not valid as far as their mail server is concerned.
The typical solution to this is authentication - by authenticating to their server (via username and password) you identify yourself as a customer and they should relay your messages. So check your phone to ensure that you have authentication enabled for your primary mail account.
If that fails (e.g. they don't support authenticated SMTP) the next option would be to relay the message through your cell provider's mail server - as an AT&T wireless customer you should be able to relay through AT&T's mail server... likewise for Verizon (or whatever national carrier your iPhone is on). You'll need to check with your carrier's site for the specifics of the mail server address to use.

  • I have a long list of Certificate Authorities, many of which are overseas, e.g. Netherlands, Turkey, China, and many others. Should I delete them?

I have a long list of Certificate Authorities (about 280), many of which are overseas, e.g. Netherlands, Turkey, China, and many others that are unknown to me. They do not appear to be related to any websites I visited. Are my emails compromised in terms of privacy? Should I delete them? Why do I need so many certificate authorities?

Sure delete them... but when you get email or try and open a web page that has a certificate from them you will not be able to open the mail or the web page without issues or making manual decision to trust the authority in question. The geographical location of the certifying authority is of no relevance.
The now defunct Mozilla Messaging used a certifying authority in Israel for it's certificates (Start) so if someone had deleted that from their settings in a fit of xenophobic housekeeping they would not have been able to open their web sites or read mail from their employees without problems.
Certifying Authorities form a chain of trust. They on the whole certify one another, but at the top of the certification pyramid/s there most be someone or group of someones who the program simply "trusts" to certify. Hence programs have a long list of pre approved companies that are allowed to issue certificates. These lists are constantly updated and should there be a serious security issue such as one of the authorities being compromised. The people at Mozilla will update or revoke that authorities trusted status.

  • Scroll through long list (Photo and iPod)

    Hi!
I'm the new guy here so be gentle...
Any way to scroll through a long list in iPod or Photo, as you can with Contacts (by dragging up/down on the leters at left)?
I know you can tap and view a single photo then scroll through at the bottom.
When viewing all photos, there is a scroll bar on the right but can't drag it.
    Same in iPod.
Drag and flick work but if there is more than a page or two, it's a pain.

+I was hoping maybe there's a three finger, double tap, right swipe, followed by a half clockwise circle to get the bottom/top+
Well, yes there is but then I would have to show you the secret hand shake and swear you to secrecy.
+It's got the slider on the right side but it's just for looks. You can't grab it and slide it+
I still haven't figured the point of that, maybe a future enhancement?
There has been a lot of grumbling about the unfriendly nature of Photos for people with a lot of images. Maybe Apple is listening and will do something about it. I keep hoping one of the iOS upgrades will include folders/albums from within Photos instead of relying on syncing.
Also note that you can not delete images from Photos that have been added by syncing through iTunes...have to delete them back in iTunes.
But still, the iPad is a terrific photo display device due to its size.

  • Bug in fgrep using the -f option and long pattern list.

    Hi there.
    I noticed a bug in fgrep (SunOS 5.9 Generic_118558-30 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V890).
This one bothers me a bit:
If I use a fgrep -f and giving a long list of patterns (here 17000 stored in a file, each line 1 pattern, Size 300kb) the result is sometimes (not eachtime) faulty.
I would like to ask If somebody have noticed this, too. Or maybe somebody feels able to replicate that bug. Or to ask If there is a patch available.
(I am searching for Routernames/Interfacenames pairs in my Syslog-File. And yes we do a lot of syslogging.)
    Thanks,
    Bo

The gnu utilities usually handle large buffer sizes more gracefully. So try gnu grep.
