Strange Corba performance problem using java 1.6

I have a java server talking to java and C++ clients using CORBA and moved from java 1.4.2 to 1.6.
Using java 1.4.2 for a large block of data, the client consistently refreshes in about 28-32 seconds.
Using Java 1.6 the times vary between 19 and 135 seconds.
After restarting the server all clients consistently take a simlar amount of time (usually between 32-35 seconds). But sometimes when the server is started the clients see a time between 19-25 seconds, sometimes between 50-55 seconds, and very occassionally over we see times of over 100 seconds.
Once started, the server seems to pick up some setting or behaviour that causes it to run at a fairly fixed rate.
We have tried adjusting the GIOP fragment and block size, which can change the performance, but no mater what size we use, we still see this strange behaviour where the server sometime runs in "fast" mode and sometimes in "slow" mode.
The server side cpu usage is higher when it is in "fast" mode. Client side cpu is higher in slow mode. Amount of data transfered does not appear to change.
Server runing on Linux RedHat Ent 4u5 - client Linux RedHat 9, RedHat Ent 4u5.
I see a similar behaviour even when I run the client and server on the same machine.
Any thoughts on where I should look next anyone?
Write a simple corba server/client that shows the problem.
Investigate Other Corba networking settings
measure the client server packet size and performance.
Thanks

3 forums is not enough to post this in, I mean, it is such a HUGE problem,
you should post it in at least another 20 forums.

Dear Deyan,
Thanks for your help. We do have $WEBLOGIC_HOME/lib/solaris in LD_LIBRARY_PATH,
which is set when running ". setEnv.sh" before startWebLogic.sh.
We failed on one patch: 105210-27, for some reason.
The strange thing is: in the same machine, all WL60 instances running under user
accounts (under /users/developers/) have no such error. But it happens under some
account, like accounts under /export/home/, etc. /user/developers is mounted on
another physical machine.

You should have the $WEBLOGIC_HOME/lib/solaris directory in your LD_LIBRARY_PATH
so that
the server can load the performance pack (which is a shared library called
libmuxer.so).
If it is present then do a ldd libmuzer.so and you will see if any libraries
that it
depends on are missing.
Also make sure you have all of the requered patches for 2.6 installed.

• Performance problem using OBJECT tag

I have a performance problem using the java plugin and was wondering if anyone else was has seen the same thing. I have a rather complex applet that interacts with java script in a web page using the LiveConnect API. The applet both calls javascript in the page and is called by java script.
Im using IE6 with the java plugin that ships with the 1.4.2_06 JVM. I have noticed that if I deploy the applet using the OBJECT tags, the application seems the trash everytime I call a java method on the applet from javascript. When I deplot the same applet using the APPLET tag the perfomance is much better. I would like to use the OBJECT tag because it applet bahaves better and I have more control over the caching.
This problem seems to be on the boundaries of IE6, JScript, the JVM and my Applet (and I suppose any could be the real culprit). My application is IE5+ specific so I can not test the applet in isolation from the surround HTML/JavaScript (for example in another browser).
Does anyone have any idea?
thanks in advance.

I'm writing because we're having some troubles with the performance pack load.
We're getting this error message when the server starts:

1.- The library libmuxer.sl exists in the path: /bea/wlserver/lib/hpux11
2.- The file has the correct privileges so it can be read by the server
3.- We've run an 'nm -o libmuxter.sl |grep getBuildTime' to ensure that the method exists in the library
We have four managed servers running in the same machine and the error message apears only in one of them.
Any idea of what might be happening?
Does any one know on what OS librarys depends libmuxer.sl?
We're running WebLogic Server 6.1 SP6 on HP-UX 11.0

That's very odd that the same machine has 4 servers and only 1 sees this
error.
I'm assuming they all have the same environment/user etc. If not,
that's the first thing you should check.
I wonder if this is a resource issue in the OS. If you start a 5th
server, does it also see this error? Is it the 4th server you start
that hits this error, or just one of the 4 you run?

• Problem with CORBA application deployed using Java Web Start 1_6_0.

Java Web Start fans and experts:
We have been using Java Web Start to deploy the client side of a CORBA-based application since the inception of Java Web Start ... including Java Web Start 1.0 right up through the present.
With Java Web Start 1_6_0, we see evidence that Web Start is "tinkering with" the IOR that CORBA uses to communicate. In all previous versions of Java Web Start, independent of the JRE which the application uses, the stringified IOR have been the same size regardless of whether the application is deployed locally or via Java Web Start. With Java Web Start 1_6_0, the stringified IOR is much longer than the "real" IOR (again, regardless of the JRE used by the application itself). To me this smells like a bug in Java Web Start 1_6_0. Has anyone else observed this behavior?
Here are some specifics .... I've run the same client application with various JREs both with and without Java Web Start as the deployment mechanism. The application was compiled and runs against servers that are running JDK 1_5_0_09.
Here is the summary of my results from a Linux box running various JREs, various versions of Java Web Start, and also running as a non-JWS deployed application. I've listed the length of the stringified IOR in each case.
JRE 1.5.0 non-JWS client: stringified IOR length = 344
JRE 1.6.0 non-JWS client: stringified IOR length = 344 ... this, I think, excludes the JRE as the cause of these problems.
Java WS 1.5.0, JRE 1.5.0 JWS client: stringified IOR length = 344
Java WS 1.5.0, JRE 1.6.0 JWS client: stringified IOR length = 344
Java WS 1.6.0, JRE 1.6.0 JWS client: stringified IOR length = 1568
Java WS 1.6.0, JRE 1.5.0 JWS cleint: stringified IOR length = 1568
In all cases, the stringified IOR length is determined by the service receiving the message and is always running JRE 1_5_9_09 and is
always the same 344 characters in length UNLESS it was deployed
using Java Web Start 1_6_0, in which case it in nearly 5 times as big!
To me, it sure looks as if there is a problem with Java Web Start 1_6_0 to be adding so much to the stringified IOR. Note: it's hard to tell how different the underlying IOR is in the JWS 1_6_0 case because, unlike most other ORBs, the Sun ORB doesn't have a tool to extract the IOR into a human readable structure. However, I can think of no good reason why the identical application deployed using Java Web Start 1_6_0 should have a stringified IOR length that is different than that of the same application deployed in non-JWS form or should differ from the behavior seen in all previous releases of Java Web Start.
Any clues or suggestions? Has anyone else observed this behavior?
Thanks,
John

• (new?) performance problem using jDriver after a Sql Server 6.5 to 2000 conversion

Hi,
This is similar - yet different - to a few of the old postings about performance
problems with using jdbc drivers against Sql Server 7 & 2000.
Here's the situation:
I am running a standalone java application on a Solaris box using BEA's jdbc driver
to connect to a Sql Server database on another network. The application retrieves
data from the database through joins on several tables for approximately 40,000
unique ids. It then processes all of this data and produces a file. We tuned
the app so that the execution time for a single run through the application was
24 minutes running against Sql Server 6.5 with BEA's jdbc driver. After performing
a DBMS conversion to upgrade it to Sql Server 2000 I switched the jDriver to the
Sql Server 2000 version. I ran the app and got an alarming execution time of
5hrs 32 min. After some research, I found the problem with unicode and nvarchar/varchar
and set the "useVarChars" property to "true" on the driver. The execution time
for a single run through the application is now 56 minutes.
56 minutes compared to 5 1/2 hrs is an amazing improvement. However, it is still
over twice the execution time that I was seeing against the 6.5 database. Theoretically,
I should be able to switch out my jdbc driver and the DBMS conversion should be
invisible to my application. That would also mean that I should be seeing the
same execution times with both versions of the DBMS. Has anybody else seen a
simlar situation? Are there any other settings or fixes that I can put into place
to get my performance back down to what I was seeing with 6.5? I would rather
not have to go through and perform another round of performance tuning after having
already done this when the app was originally built.
thanks,
mike

Mike wrote:
Joe,
This was actually my next step. I replaced the BEA driver with
the MS driver and let it run through with out making any
configuration changes, just to see what happened. I got an
execution time of about 7 1/2 hrs (which was shocking). So,
(comparing apples to apples) while leaving the default unicode
property on, BEA ran faster than MS, 5 1/2 hrs to 7 1/2 hrs.
I then set the 'SendStringParametersAsUnicode' to 'false' on the
MS driver and ran another test. This time the application
executed in just over 24 minutes. The actual runtime was 24 min
16 sec, which is still ever so slightly above the actual runtime
against SS 6.5 which was 23 min 35 sec, but is twice as fast as the
56 minutes that BEA's driver was giving me.
I think that this is very interesting. I checked to make sure that
there were no outside factors that may have been influencing the
runtimes in either case, and there were none. Just to make sure,
I ran each driver again and got the same results. It sounds like
there are no known issues regarding this?
We have people looking into things on the DBMS side and I'm still
looking into things on my end, but so far none of us have found
anything. We'd like to continue using BEA's driver for the
support and the fact that we use Weblogic Server for all of our
online applications, but this new data might mean that I have to
switch drivers for this particular application.Thanks. No, there is no known issue, and if you put a packet sniffer
between the client and DBMS, you will probably not see any appreciable
difference in the content of the SQL sent be either driver. My suspicion is
that it involves the historical backward compatibility built in to the DBMS.
It must still handle several iterations of older applications, speaking obsolete
versions of the DBMS protocol, and expecting different DBMS behavior!
Our driver presents itself as a SQL7-level application, and may well be treated
differently than a newer one. This may include different query processing.
Because our driver is deprecated, it is unlikely that it will be changed in
future. We will certainly support you using the MS driver, and if you look
in the MS JDBC newsgroup, you'll see more answers from BEA folks than
from MS people!
Joe
>

Mike
The next test you should do, to isolate the issue, is to try another
JDBC driver.
MS provides a type-4 driver now, for free. If it is significantly faster,
it would be
interesting. However, it would still not isolate the problem, because
we still would
need to know what query plan is created by the DBMS, and why.
Joe Weinstein at BEA
PS: I can only tell you that our driver has not changed in it's semantic
function.
It essentially send SQL to the DBMS. It doesn't alter it.

• Performance problem with java stored procedure

hi,
i developped a java class, then I stored it in Oracle 8.1.7.
This class contains several import of other classes stored in the database.
It works, but the execution perfomances are disappointing. It's very long. I guess, that's because of the great number of classes to load that are necessary for my class execution.
I tried to increase the size of the java pool (I parameter 70 Mo in the java_pool_size parameter of the init.ora), but the performance is not much better.
Has anyone an idea to increase the performance of this execution of my class ?
In particular, is there a way to keep permanently in memory the java objects used by my class ?
Thanks in advance
bye

before running Java, the database session needs to be Java enabled; this might be the reason why it is taking so long. If this is the case, you should see an improvement in subsequent calls, once a database session is Java enabled, other users can benefit from it.

I have some performance issue with java stored procedure. Hope some one will be able to help me out. I'm using java stored procedures in my application and basically these procedures are used to do some validation and form the XML message of the database tables. I have noticed that when I call the PL/SQL wrapper function, it is taking time to load the java class and once the class is loaded the execution is faster. Most of the time is spent for loading the class rather than executing the function. if I reduce the class load time, I can improve the performance drastically. Do any one of you know how to reduce the class load time. The following are the platform and oracle version.
O/S: IBM AIX
Oracle: 8.1.7

You can use InitialContext ic = new InitialContext() only if you are using a startup class, servlet or a JSP i.e
server side code.
If you are using a java client you need to use Context ic = getInitialContext();
Try this code
import java.util.*;
import javax.activation.*;
import javax.mail.*;
import javax.mail.internet.*;
import javax.naming.*;
import java.io.*;
import java.net.InetAddress;
import java.util.Properties;
import java.util.Date;
public class MailTo {
public static void main(String args[])
try {
Properties h = new Properties();
h.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY,"weblogic.jndi.WLInitialContextFactory");
h.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "t3://localhost:7001");
Context ic = new InitialContext(h);
Session session = (Session) ic.lookup("testSession");
Properties props = new Properties();
props.put("mail.transport.protocol", "smtp");
props.put("mail.smtp.host", "XX.XX.XX.XX");
props.put("mail.from", "[email protected]");
Session session2 = session.getInstance(props);
Message msg = new MimeMessage(session2);
msg.setFrom();
msg.setRecipients(Message.RecipientType.TO,InternetAddress.parse("[email protected]",false));
msg.setSubject("Test Message");
msg.setSentDate(new Date());
MimeBodyPart mbp = new MimeBodyPart();
mbp.setText("This is a mail sent to you using JAVA Mail API and Weblogic Server");
Multipart mp = new MimeMultipart();
mp.addBodyPart(mbp);
msg.setContent(mp);
Transport.send(msg);
catch(Exception e)
e.printStackTrace();
}//end of main

• Problems using java.xml.xpath - How to get values from DTMNodeList?

Sorry for the waffle in the subject title, but I was unsure what to call it. I hope this thread is in the correct forum.
I'm having problems using xpath to parse some data from an XML file. I am able to create an expression which obtains the elements I wish to retreive, but I'm unsure on how to go about getting their values. So far I have..
public int getTerms(int PMID)
String uri = "http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/eutils/efetch.fcgi?db=pubmed&id="
+ PMID + "&retmode=xml";
// Create an XPath object with the XPathFactory class
XPathFactory factory = XPathFactory.newInstance();
XPath xPath = factory.newXPath();
// Define an InputSource for the XML article
InputSource inputSource = new InputSource(uri);
// Create the expression
String expression = "/PubmedArticleSet/PubmedArticle/MedlineCitation/MeshHeadingList/MeshHeading/DescriptorName";
// Use this expression to obtain a NodeSet of all the MeSH Headings for the article
try
DTMNodeList nodes = (DTMNodeList) xPath.evaluate(expression,
inputSource, XPathConstants.NODESET);
int length = nodes.getLength();
String[] terms = new String[length];
// Test mesh terms are being stored.
*for (int i=0; i<length; i++)*
*                    System.out.println(i + ": " + nodes.item(i).getNodeValue());*
return nodes.getLength();
catch (XPathExpressionException e2)
{ System.out.println("Article with PMID " + PMID + " has no associated MeSH terms");}
// return a default
return 0;
} The part in bold is the problematic code. I wish to retreive the values of each of the nodes I have taken into my DTMNodeList using a for loop to iterate through each node, and use the getNodeValue() method from the Node class which should return a string. However, the values I retreive are NULL. In the test document I use, the elements do have values.
Here is a snippet of the XML file I am reading in:

Answered my own question....
The element value is actually the child of the node I am current at, so instead of doing:
i + ": " + nodes.item(i).getNodeValue()); I should have really done:
i + ": " + nodes.item(i).getChildNode().getNodeValue());

• Strange class error when using java

I've been attempting to use java.awt.robot to simulate a key press when a button is clicked however I'm getting a couple of errors that I can't figure out but I'm not so good when it comes to scripts. When the button "LetterButton" is pressed it should simulate a keypress, ideally to the desktop/operating sytem but the errors I'm getting are:-
1071: Syntax error: expected a definition keyword (such as function) after attribute public, not static.
1084: Syntax error: expecting rightbrace before leftbrace.
1131: Class must not be nested.
Here's the code:-
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?><mx:WindowedApplicationxmlns:mx="
http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute">
<mx:Script>
<![CDATA[
import java.awt.Robot;
import java.awt.event.KeyEvent;
public class Main {
public static void main(String[] argv) throws Exception {
Robot robot =
new Robot();
robot.keyPress(KeyEvent.VK_A);
robot.keyRelease(KeyEvent.VK_A);
]]>
</mx:Script>
<mx:VBox x="359" y="262" horizontalCenter="0" verticalCenter="0">
<mx:Button id="LetterButton" label="Button" click=""/>
<mx:TextInput id="txt"/>
</mx:VBox></mx:WindowedApplication>

Sounds tricky. I may ask them to look for an alternative way of doing it as Java really isn't my thing, I'm merely just a flex beginner at the moment.
The reason I've been looking for this is that my app will be installed on a digital tv that also has a system connected to it using a Linux operating system so the user can switch between watching digital tv and the application seamlessly and at the moment a Linux professional who I'm working with has the Digital TV bound to the F12 key which is bound to a handheld remote control (being a tv there is no keyboard, just an 'air mouse' and the remote control).
So my client and my Linux guy have asked me to come up with a way of getting the app to communicate with the desktop/operating system. I have seen flex apps in the past where a user can drag and drop videos on their desktop into an air application from which they will be played so I thought it would be possible to interact with the exteral OS/Desktop from within an AIR app by using just flex but it doesn't seem so easy through my research.
Thanks for your help though.

• Performance problem using multi-thread

I am using berkeley db to store a int/double pair, and i randomly get 100,0000 results to check the performance . Using 1 thread, it cost about 1 Mins. But using 4 threads, it costs 4 Mins. More threads, lower performance. Is there Anyone know the reason?
Env flags:
envFlags=DB_CREATE | DB_INIT_MPOOL | DB_THREAD | DB_PRIVATE|DB_INIT_CDB;
DB open flags: DB_THREAD
and i use db->get method to get results.

Berkeley DB 4.8 will be released soon and has features that address CMP/SMP scalability. We would appreciate your feedback on your experiences with it. Once available, please test it and post your results here, I'm sure you'll be pleasently surprised.

• Problem using Java Webstart to kick off CORBA Client

Dear all,
I am currently having a problem in using the Java Webstart to kick off
the CORBA Client, I set up the JNLP file jvm properties as following:
<resources>
<j2se version="1.4*" java-vm-args="-Xms64m -Xmx256m -verbose -esa
-Xnoclassgc -client -Dswing.useSystemFontSettings=false ">
<resources>
<property name="vbroker.orb.initRef"
value="NameService=corbaloc::10.35.55.82:20005/NameService"/>
</resources>
</j2se>
</resources>
The problem I have is that when the webstart starting the client, the
client just simply dies during the startup and I find the log message
following:
org.omg.CORBA.ORBPackage.InvalidName
at com.inprise.vbroker.orb.ORB.resolve_initial_references(ORB.java:943)
So it is showing that there is problem with the vbroker.orb.initRef
setting, know that if I don't use the webstart to start the client and
simply use the windows batch file, using the jvm properties as:
java -Dvbroker.orb.initRef=NameService=corbaloc::10.31.51.80:20001/NameService
It would work perfectly.
Could you tell if I miss anything when configuing the webstart jnlp
file on this regard? Currently, I think that the only way I can set
the JVM properties in the JNLP file is to use its properties tag to
set the system properties for the application.
Thanks heaps in advance for any help you can give here !!!
Victor

Hi, Andre,
No, I have tried both of your suggestion and there was no joy. I still have the following error and the client jvm just crashes during starting up:
org.omg.CORBA.ORBPackage.InvalidName
at com.inprise.vbroker.orb.ORB.resolve_initial_references(ORB.java:943)
I believe it is still related to the jvm properties:
<property name="vbroker.orb.initRef" value="NameService=corbaloc::10.35.55.82:20005/NameService"/>
And know that when I used "-Dvbroker.orb.initRef=NameService=corbaloc::10.35.55.82:20005/NameService" in the windows batch file, the client runs ok.
Is this indicating that there is the limitation of using the webstart to invoke CORBA client?
Any further help would be very appreciated!

• Mapviewer performance problem using image format FORMAT_RAW_COMPRESSED

I am using the MapViewer.FORMAT_RAW_COMPRESSED map image in my (java) map application because some features must be clickable and as far as I can work out, this is the only way to achieve this in a Java client. On my local system, running the map server in an oc4j container, this works about as fast as using FORMAT_GIF_URL and loading the image from this url. There also doesn't seem to be much difference in memory and cpu usage.
When I direct the request to a map server running on a remote Application Server the rendering time grows exponentially. The same maprequest using FORMAT_GIF_URL runs as fast as it does in my local OC4J container. The problem seems to be in "packing time" in RealWorker:
Remote AS:
Thu Jun 30 13:59:34 CEST 2005 DEBUG [oracle.lbs.mapserver.core.MapperPool] freeMapper() begins...
Thu Jun 30 13:59:34 CEST 2005 DEBUG [oracle.lbs.mapserver.core.RealWorker] [RealWorker] preparation time: 99ms
Thu Jun 30 13:59:34 CEST 2005 DEBUG [oracle.lbs.mapserver.core.RealWorker] [RealWorker] querying/rendering time: 5560ms
Thu Jun 30 13:59:34 CEST 2005 DEBUG [oracle.lbs.mapserver.core.RealWorker] [RealWorker] packing time: 142605ms
Thu Jun 30 13:59:34 CEST 2005 DEBUG [oracle.lbs.mapserver.core.RealWorker] [RealWorker] --------------- total time: 148264ms
Local OC4J:
Thu Jun 30 15:34:42 CEST 2005 DEBUG [oracle.lbs.mapserver.core.MapperPool] freeMapper() begins...
Thu Jun 30 15:34:42 CEST 2005 DEBUG [oracle.lbs.mapserver.core.RealWorker] [RealWorker] preparation time: 540ms
Thu Jun 30 15:34:42 CEST 2005 DEBUG [oracle.lbs.mapserver.core.RealWorker] [RealWorker] querying/rendering time: 2490ms
Thu Jun 30 15:34:42 CEST 2005 DEBUG [oracle.lbs.mapserver.core.RealWorker] [RealWorker] packing time: 120ms
Thu Jun 30 15:34:42 CEST 2005 DEBUG [oracle.lbs.mapserver.core.RealWorker] [RealWorker] --------------- total time: 3150
The test server is smaller than my local system and more applications are running on the AS, generating the map takes all the available memory and cpu, but the difference between the time it takes generating a GIF image and generating a Java image of almost a factor 50 is puzzling.
What could cause this enormous difference? Any idea's about how we can analyze or solve this? What could RealWorker be doing in this packing time? Any hints would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Ida

Thanks for the replies!
1. Which AS version are you using? -> 10.1.2
2. Just as a test, if you restart AS (if possible) do you still get the same values? -> yes, we restarted the AS and the results are the same.
The server is indeed running low in memory. It is a 512MB machine, just big enough to run the AS. The production server will have some more, but not very much. Could I estimate how much extra memory it will need to keep a good performance when generating maps with live features? And maybe I'm wrong, but shouldn't the extra load for the java image only be on the client, since that's where the image is made? On the server it's just the image data, isn't it?
I tried removing the basemap, but that reduces the loading time just with a few seconds. The live themes are jdbc themes and result in only some 20 to 30 geofeatures. Removing them from the request so only an empty image with a title is retrieved still takes about 117 seconds. Reducing the device size does reduce the loading time, so it does seem to have something to do with the amount of pixels in the image space, not with the data. Could it be that in the "packing" of the image something happens that takes a lot of memory, related to the amount of pixels?
In my situation it would be handy if the live features were also returned when the image format is not set to FORMAT_RAW_COMPRESSED, it is also possible to draw shapes onto an existing image and this would bypass the memory problems.
Thanks for any further help.
