Strange fonts problem in VirtualBox

Hello!
I've got some strange font artifacts, could anyone suggest something?
http://imagebin.ca/view/WJVkiH2n.html

I have used VB on my MBP for some time and have Win7 (64bit), Win2000 and Ubuntu virtual machines all working well.
I suspect that you may have allocated all CPU cores to each VM. I found that will cause the whole machine to become sluggish. I reduced the numbers of cores to: Win7, two (of four on my MBP), and; Win2000 and Ubuntu, one each.
Of course, only have one machine, including the MBP, doing heavy processing at once.
Also keep in mind that installing an operating system is CPU intensive.
Hope that helps.

    Hello guys,
encountered a strange small font problem on sites with code wrappers like stackoverflow/blogs/jsfiddle. After update. took a look at my font setup all looks good.
I've also checked the settings for gtk2/3 and no problems there.

    Update:
Tried reinstalling, change the fonts, remove all font clear the cache.
change, look up the settings, looked up size, tried monitor dpi.
checked all the config files for anything remotely related to this problem.
Had a quick look at the bug tracker for google-chrome-beta as well no reported
font problems as far as i can find.
    Update2:
Tried adding custom.css to the browser not even that worked.
    update3: [SOLVED]
    So i solved the problem.
The problem was a faulty font that was stuck and used in the pre somehow.
Removed and added another to the list and somehow that worked.
recommendations - if anyone has this problem in the future.
open firefox and look in the font tab what is used. and remove that
or try to install a fixed one. that should work.
-Nothing has yielded any working results.
So any ideas at this point would be most appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -L

  • New user with strange font problem

I created a user account for my girlfriend...when she brought up the safari the google homepage had a strange grafiti font for all the text. (I say strange, but it's one of my many fonts in the collection) I opened up firefox and had the same problem...this morning I realized it was doing it in mail as well. Under my account (the admin and original account) there isn't an issue, but I've looked all over and can't find a setting to fix it for her account.
It's driving me nuts. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    15" Titanium Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

..."I say strange, but it's one of my many fonts in the collection"...
Since it sounds like you know the name of the font, you could try to see if anything turns up with the command below, which searches through user preferences for a given string:<pre>defaults find "font name"</pre>A partial font name should be fine. Enter the command using "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Terminal.app".
Also, the caches (associated with a user by the 'uid') don't appear to be cleared when an account is deleted. So if a new user is created and gets assigned a previously used 'uid', they may inherit the old cache files. For starters, try clearing out any file or folder whose name contains the user's 'uid', such as the "/Library/Caches/com.apple.IntlDataCache.###" file or the "/Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/###" folder belonging to the affected user. Then log out and back in. To determine the user's 'uid', try:<pre>id -u username</pre>

  • Strange font problem in Safari, only in one account

    Hi,
Safari (3.2.1) renders small fonts on some pages incorrectly, but does so only on one user account. On nytimes.com, for example, the headlines are all fine, but the text is thin and hard to read.
I have cleared caches, deleted User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist, used Onyx to clear out various User caches, and checked to make sure I don't have Helvetica Fractions or Times Phonetic in my Font Book (these had mentioned as problems in various posts). In my own account, Firefox 3 renders those same texts correctly. So the problem seems to be isolated to Safari on one account. I would be grateful to hear if you can suggest a remedy.
    Best,
    Michel

    Hi Michel,
Might be a problem with a local font, or settings within Safari's preferences.
Within Safari, make sure your preference settings are correct.
In the Appearance panel, default encoding is "Western (ISO 1), Standard and Fixed Width Fonts - I set mine to Skia. I believe the default font is Times. Either works fine.
In the Advance panel, make sure the Style Sheet is set to "none".
Outside of Safari, open Font Book from your Applications Folder. Highlight All Fonts, then scan the list. If you see any blue dots, that indicates a duplicate in your Font collection. You can remove the duplicates as follows: single-click on the first font listed, then Command/A keys to select "all". Then, go to the edit menu and select "resolve duplicates".
Also, with everything still selected, in the File Menu, select "Validate Fonts". If errors appear, correct them by removing the corrupted font. Lastly, download a copy of Font Nuke. This will allow you to clean the Font cache.

  • Strange font problem after kernel update

    Hi,
I recently did a pacman -Su system update which told me there was one new package available which was the kernel. I let it install and when i rebooted my fonts had kind of 'degraded' in kde. They're still usable but they now look like they haven't been rendered properly because of a dpi problem. However, xdpyinfo tells me my screen's at 92x96 dpi and i have all the 100 and 75 dpi fonts installed so i don't understand how this would happen. i even tried reinstalling the nvidia drivers in case it was the kernel module which needed rebuilding.
I never had this problem updating before although i have known pacman to remove things it shouldn't in the past so could it have deleted something??
Hope someone can shed some light on this for me
    Dan

I solved that by resetting the parameter ram, as explained here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238

  • Strange font problem

    Hey,
I am trying to write a program which will consistantly display all text (across all platforms) in the same font. I chose "Lucida Sans" since it comes with the JRE.
When I compile and run my program, it displays all text in "Lucida Sans" as expected. However, when I make a .jar file of the code and run the .jar file, all text is displayed in a slightly wider-spaced Lucida Sans font.
The new font that is displayed is Lucida Sans (not Lucid Bright or any other Lucid *, nor is it a different font size, or bold/italic). However, there is more space between each letter which makes my JLabels larger which in turn throws off my component layout.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

In fact I am using layout managers. However, as you know, layout managers don't provide a good clean way to line up complex sets of components. They only provide a general contract on where they will locate your components. Thus, I had to use a combination of hard-coded subpanels supported by other layout managers.

  • Strange system font problem

    Hello,
I have the following problem for 2 days now:
    http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/1462/bild1.png
I did not install anything. I tried to delete font caches but it did not help.
I re-installed the system but that did not change anything. After resetting the PRAM the problem was solved. At least for some hours, but now the problem appeared again.
When I do a reboot, strange white lines appear over the grey background and the Apple Logo, then the screen turns blue, the cursor consists of white lines too and nothing more happens. After several tries to reboot the Mac is running again, but the font problem still exists.
First I thought of a graphic card problem, but it seems that this font problem only concerns system prefernces and system applications.
I have no idea what to do now, so please help me.

    Hi "Apfelkrautsalami"
Font caching information is stored on a per-user basis in
    /private/var/folders
I have no idea if it'll help, but you could try this:
    - Open a Terminal and do
    *sudo rm -rf -- /private/var/folders/??*
    - Restart your machine
(Note 1: The '--' prevents rm to think that folders like '-5' are options)
(Note 2: The '??' will match any two-letter directory. I didn't want to say '*')

  • When creating PDF from web page why does text appears as strange font not readable?

I am using Acrobat Standard, ver. 9.5.5.  Frequently if I save a web page on either Firefox or Internet Explorer by printing to my Adobe PDF driver, much of the text is rendered in a strange font rather than in the font that appears on the web page.  The only work-around I have found is to print the document to a printer and then scan the printed page to create a PDF.  Is there a solution to this problem?

The OS may be an issue so what are you using Win7, Win8, XP, MAC, or other? In printing, what job settings are you using? When you open the PDF, check the properties (ctrl-D) to see if the fonts are embedded or not. The problem is likely related to the font not being embedded. The embedding may be a license issue for the font. Acrobat will only embed fonts that are properly licensed. You might try the Print or Press job settings that are a bit better to embedding all fonts.

  • Pdf font problem

Good afternoon to everyone  I have a problem with this pdf article  http://hotfile.com/dl/86909478/7a0c189/Eye_10_DuoTrav_vs_Xalacom_24-hr_XFG.pdf.html  when I use acroread 9.4-1 maverick, at first I get this message:  `Cannot extract the embedded font IODIOB+AdvFrutiger-L. Some characters may not display or print correctly.`  and the result is strange font in specific parts of the article (eg at the part of the authors), though the main structure of the article has not been disturbed.  using evince or okular things are worse and the problem relates to whole article including the structure.  using pdftohtml, the browser reads exactly as acroread.  using pdfedit and then gedit to open it as html the problem seems more complicated and I get reports for a large number of repeated errors: Error: Couldn't create a font for 'IODIOB+AdvFrutiger-L' Error: Couldn't create a font for 'IODIOC+AdvPalB' Error: Couldn't create a font for 'IODIPI+AdvPalR'  My OS is Linux Mint 10 64bit  Any ideas?

How about if I set security feaures-would they still be able to open it in Illus?
The "security" features of PDFs are totally illusory.
There are readily available, legal programs that will circumvent them.  For instance:  with PDFKeyPro I can create a decrypted, completely unsecured copy of any encrypted or "secured" PDF you care to throw at me in a matter of seconds.
So, it all depends on how determined they are.

  • Strange font substitution

    Hi there,
I am using a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.5.2. It has suddenly started to have problems with the fonts in fontbook and also doing some very strange font substitutions.
Instead of showing text normally it is replacing it with random characters. You can kind of read it but it's not real letters. I have a screenshot of it but don't know how to post the image on here.
This substitution is happening in Mail, Preview and Safari, so seems to be with native OS X software.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Simon,
Have you gone to FontBook and resolved duplicates?
Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your fonts work in that User acct? (That will tell where your font issue is coming from - whether it's in your Home fonts folder or a system fonts folder) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account. Check your fonts in that account and let us know the result.
Also, have you disabled Helvetica Fractions, Helvetica Neue and Times Phonetic, if you have them? They are known troublemakers.
Here is a user tip by Kurt Lang that lists all necessary system fonts and their locations. Also installed fonts and their font folders and loacation from Apple.

  • Font problem, can you find a solution?

When I upfraded to Snow Leopard, I had a prblem with fonts. In any browser, a strange font was active instead of a normal one. Attached, is a picture where he problem can be seen. I've already tried to delete the duplicated fonts in Font Book which worked the fisrst time but now I have the same problem but I can't really set the deault font back on. I've also tried to change the fonts in the browser settings but it doesn't seem to be the problem too.

I really didn't install any new font....
Maybe not directly, but an app you installed must have dumped more fonts onto your drive, as the one shown isn't any font that comes with OS X.
But how can I delete all the fonts I have installed myself?
Check the Fonts folder in your user account. If there are any fonts in it, remove them. Otherwise, compare the contents of the /Library/Fonts/ folder with this list and remove any which are not in the list.
Another way to find it is to open Font Book (or whatever font manager you're using) and click through them one at a time until the preview you see matches the bad font. Remove it.

  • TextEdit font problem

I'm having a problem with fonts in TextEdit. Some of the fonts in a particular font family are not available when I choose them either as a default font in the Preferences dialog, or as the active font in the Fonts panel. The unavailable fonts are listed, but when I select them nothing happens or the selection jumps to an entirely different font family.
The strange thing is that these fonts in question work perfectly in other OS X applications that use the Fonts panel, such as pages.
Here's a screenshot of the Fonts panel in Pages. All of the Helvetica Neue LT Com fonts are listed properly:
But here's a screenshot of the Fonts panel in TextEdit. Observe how the "Light" font is listed differently, i.e. just "Light" instead of "45 Light" as it is in Pages. Also "43 Light Extended" is only listed as "W3" in TextEdit, and there are other similar examples.
Any ideas what's going on, and how to fix it?

I don't have a solution (and I haven't noticed contradictions like yours), but I have noticed other font problems with TextEdit 1.6 in 10.6 and 10.6.1 (the version that was there when I finished installing 10.6).
If I paste in a selection from, say, a webpage and the font size is not one listed by default in its Font Menu, the size does not display, even if I use Command + or -, until it becomes one of the listed sizes. But it never displays in the top right data entry box.
Another anomaly is that pasting text that has an embedded link retains both the link and the special formatting even when using Paste and Match Style. It does not match style. If you apply Paste Style makes, that makes no difference, either. I have to either type it instead of pasting it or paste it in a Text Only file, then copy or cut it out and paste it in the RTF document. I tried selecting Edit > Substitutions > Smart Copy/Paste but apparently that refers to putting spaces between words when pasting in (I could not find it explained in TextEdit Help). I tried turning off Smart Links, but while it works with URLs, it has no effect on linked text (I am talking specifically about the kind of linkage found in the "Genre" line at IMDb.com, as an example).

Pages 08 fonts- problems with Arial, Times New Roman - how do I repair them?

I am running Snow Leopard. Transferring the same texts to TextEdit has no problems, so this is a Pages problem, I think.  Corruption of Times New Roman and Arial fonts, I suspect, but where? and what do I do about it? I just need to be pointed to a source of advice, I think.
    Thanks
