Strange messase on update

I got a message after doing a pacman -Syu that reads:
(4/5) upgrading sane
warning: directory permissions differ on var/
filesystem: 755  package: 775
warning: directory permissions differ on var/lock/
filesystem: 755  package: 775
What does that mean? /var and var/lock have 755 permission and that is correct.
The directory /var/lock/sane however does have a setting of 775 and is owned by root:scanner ... is that correct?
Moreover 'sane (which seems to be the package that is complaining) has permissions set to 644 in /var/cache/pacman/pkg just like every other package and that differs from the message, that would suggest it is 775.
Am I misreading something ?

Hang on, what is wrong with 1777? It's the same with /tmp and /var/tmp - are you saying that /tmp is fundamentally insecure? Let's see an example.

Only I can read or write to that file

$ cd /var/lock
$ touch testfile
$ ll testfile

Well ... since you put it that way ... yes.
In Unix/Linux the permissions are set as Owner Group Others and the actions that can be performed in those files are 4 = Read, 2 = write, 1 =execute. Any file with the Others set to the sum of the permissions (7) can read, write and execute.
Given that fact, in the Unix world, it was traditional that you would set permissions only for the required access and if a directory does not need to be world writable it should not... and that's the sum total of what I'm saying.
A malicious user can use directories with flexible write permissions to create and write scripts or do other evil things, see?
I'm not saying it is a terrible thing and I may be a bit paranoid ... but I like the cozy feeling of a secure system. That's all.
p.s. I'm not trying to spread religion neither ... this all started as a simple question after all

• LR shows images strange after videocard update.

I had a videocard update, after that, the new pictures that I imported on my computer, showed strange on my explorer.
I also imported the pictures in LR and then the pictures looked like this (the same as they showed in my explorer).

I updated the chipset, cleaned the cache of my computer and LR.
I deleted the imported pictures and put them back on my pc from my CF-card.
The pictures look normal in my explorer, but still the same on my LR.
Please help me.

There's nothing you can do in Lr.
Since you have a new video card, did you update the driver?
On second thought - although it is often said that Lr does not make use of the graphics card - try to uninstall and re-install Lr.
Maybe it needs to read something off the card or its driver on installation. This is just a guess.

• Strange behavior in updating and standbying

Hi,
In the last 4 weeks I've been facing some strange behavior from my iPhone 4. First, sometimes when I pick it up its screen is already on (dimmed) and showing the lock screen (with some elements missing though). Secondly, and more annoying yet, when I try to update the apps via app store the initial process occurs normally but after loading the first app it begins installing it and keeps in it forever. I have to soft reset the phone. After that, the app (that kept installing) seems ok. So, I repeat the process of update from the beginning (app after app).
I've already tried to hard reset the device without any luck with any of the problems. Any suggestions about what is going on?
Thanks
Adriano

Hi,
I'm not clear on the distinction you're making for type of access.
Well, to be honest, now that I've re-read that this morning I'm not completely sure what I had in mind either. I think I was thinking about using the collection in what I believe the documentation calls "slices". However, given the other information you've posted it doesn't seem like that would be a feasible alternative in any case.
I understand what you mean about varray and nested-table with the upper-bound limit for the varray's... I've not actually compared the two for performance so my idea that there may be a difference could be completely incorrect. Beyond that, creating code that only works in batches (or slices) may be less performant than what you currently have.
I hope I've not detracted from the thread and maybe someone else with more experience will have an "ah ha!" sort of observation.

• HTTP Handler strange behavior when updating HR data

Hi there,
Brief summary: Executing a function module from inside a HTTP Handler gives a different result than executing the function module direcly through SE37. The user defined for the SICF service calling the Handler is the same as the one we use for SE37.
Details:
We have created an HTTP Handler implementing the interface IF_HTTP_EXTENSION.
We have also defined a new service through SICF that access the previous Handler.
We have a web application accessing SAP through that HTTP Handler.
Within our HTTP Handler (within the IF_HTTP_EXTENSION~HANDLE_REQUEST method), we are calling a custom function module that perform different actions depending on the parameters received.
The solution works really well but we have identified an issue for some actions: when we execute some background updates (like calling HR_INFOTYPE_OPERATION) and the transaction returns an error, the HTTP Handler suddenly stops and the HTTP call returns an error.
The strange thing is that executing the function module directly (without calling the HTTP handler from the web) captures the error and continues the execution of the function module.
It seems that when the function module gets called from the Handler, there is some screen or user parameters that affect the result of the transaction, and we cannot find the way to capture that error and let the Handler to continue.
Any idea, suggestion, alternative solution would be much appreciated
Best regards,
Miguel

Hi Olivier, thanks for your reply, nice to see you are still out there
You raise a good point. We are reusing an "old" web app that was connecting to SAP through the DCOM connector. The RFC (the function module I mentioned on my first post) cannot be modified as it handles tons of different web calls, so we decided to call that RFC from the Handler.
It may not be the best solution, but the web app has been modified to call the different handlers (for the different environments) and still hope to find a work around our current problem.
Other than that, it works really well and performance is amazing
Thanks again,
Miguel

Hi
Welcome to Apple Discussions
The two fonts that seem to adversely affect Safari are Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic.
Open Font Book in your Applications folder. Enter either of these names in the spotlight panel. If either appears, disable it via the Edit menu. If neither is in your system, please provide a screenshot of the font type.
If the above referenced fonts applies to your situation, download a copy of Font Finagler. This will allow you to clean the Font cache.
When done, restart the computer/Safari.

• Strange problem when updating database

I have an odd problem with a small application that is written in VB.NET, reading from and updating an SQL Express 2012 server.  The app pulls a datareader from a view and then loops through it and sends each record to an offsite db via an http post.
It then goes and marks the record sent using an update query to set a sync bit value in the main key table.  It then goes to the next record in the reader and repeats the process (or that was the idea).
What happens when it runs is that the update operation fails with a “Connection timeout or server instance not found “ error.  I have checked the usual culprits, it connects to the server to retrieve the reader OK using the same connect string, the
user in the connect string has appropriate permissions to the table in question, etc.  The event log only shows an unhandled exception, the timeout message appears in the local debugger.  The exact same update runs successfully on another table for
a different operation and on my dev machine, so it seems to be something about that particular table.
If I log in to SQL management studio as the user that I have in the connection string and update a record in the table using the same syntax as the update query in the application it succeeds.  Very strange.
Troubleshooting is somewhat complicated by a need to be very careful with the machine that the problem is occurring on.  It is an in-production machine that I can only access via Logmein and is a 20 hour plane flight away.  So I have to be very
cautious not to bork it up.  Any thoughts on how to proceed?

• Strange failure in  updating status of a item in CMS.

Hi,
our weblogic portal 10.3.2 application whishes to change the status of an item in CMS (from "published" to "retired"). We know that only the owner of the item or a superadmin can change item status. The strange thing is that: we have two separate testing environment: in one it works, in the other one not (com.bea.content.AuthorizationException: User does not have update privileges on this node)
We would like to understand why the behaviour differs in those two envs.
Do you know which user is impersonated by a weblogic application when accessing CMS using portal API?... do you have any hints for us?
thanks in advance

• Strange behavior on updating...

Ok,
just a disclaimer.... I'm new to Workshop, total time I've been using it is about
two weeks...
I'm working with WLS 8.1 on Win2k. Some strange things happen during the day
while redeploying/updating the app. I have a simple pageflow that is retreiving
a list of data from my db and displaying it in a grid. The flow will work sometimes,
then if I update/repdeply from Workshop, it will fail.
If I restart or sometimes just change the jpf file, then redeploy it might work.
But if I'm just changin a jsp or css file... the error occurs.
Can I expect to just "update/repdeploy" all day while working in Workshop....
Or am I missing a step or two?
thanks,
John

After you've run the JSP and the Start button is enabled in the .portal
file, do you get a dialog asking if you'd like to re-run the JSP, or
can you run the .portal file directly?I can run it directly. I tried to experiment more systematically today but was
only able to experience the problem immediately after starting workshop. Moreover,
it is not necessary
to actually run the JSP. It suffices to double-click it. That is: I start workshop,
double-click
the .portal file, start is disabled, I double-click a .jsp file, start is now
enabled, I immediately
double-click the .portal file, start is now enabled. Since the work-around is
so simple and quick, the problem doesn't bother me anymore :-).
This sounds like it's probably a deployment problem, [...]
If you see that dialog again, you may be able to get more specific
information about the current state of deployment in the WebLogic Server
console, or by starting without debugging and checking for an error message in the browser.I started to monitor closely what happens in the console during my build, deployment,
and start activities. I think you are right that when I experience unintended
effects in
workshop it is typically due to problems with deployments.
The question then remains what, in turn, causes these problems (incorrect deployment
by me
or by the system). By looking closer at the documentation and what actually happens
when
building, deploying and running applications, I can see that I have been (and
still is) a little
bit confused about exactly what is done under certain circumstances.
For instance, smart debugging only means that the current file is checked for
changes when
starting the debugger. Thus, if other files are updated, but not the current one,
the application
is apparently not rebuilt/redeployed. However, if the current file is changed,
there is a new
build and deployment, but based on the (short) time taken to perform this, it
does not look
like a total build (which takes much longer). Also, by looking in the console
during the
deployment, one can see that not all files are begin updated, as opposed to the
situation
when one performs a full build of the project or application. So, what happens
if both the current file and also other files are changed.
QUESTION: Are the changes on the other files taken into account, or ignored?
Another thing that might have caused confusion for me is that the application
is redployed automatically after a build, even if there were build errors. If
smart debugging afterwards entails that only part of the deployment is updated
then it is not clear to me that the result is sound. My conclusion is that a total
build should be done in this situation. In this connection I also wonder about
the following questions (that I have also posed in feedback to the online help
documentation):
QUESTION: is there any way to disable automatic deployment after a build?
QUESTION: is there any way to modify the behaviour so that the automatic deployment
only happens if there are no build errors? This would be nice, because deployment
takes quite long
time, and if it is known that the deployment is no good, it would be nice to avoind
it.
QUESTION: Is there any way to have only all changed files rebuild or redeployed,
instead of all (i.e. a generalization of smart-debugging to all changed files,
not just the current file).
QUESTION: you mention in your previous post that one might forget to build+deploy
after a clean. I did some experiments and also concluded that one must do this.
But what is the utility of the clean command then? Why not just do a redeploy
instead of clean+build+deploy?
Thanks for all the help!

• Mail Signatures behaving strangely since recent update to 10.5.5

Hi there
Some, but not all, of our macs have started to behave a little bit strangely since updating to 10.5.5
We use Apple Mail 3.5, we all have a set default signature which we sometime have to change depending on the circumstances. Prior to the recent updates all machines behaved in the same way. When creating a new mail the default signature appears, when you select a new signature the default one is replaced.
The new behaviour on some of the machines is that the new signature is added below the default one.
I would like all of the machines to replace the default signature.
Any ideas?
thanks for your help.

• Strange behaviour after update to 10.4.7

Soon after updating to 10.4.7 (via Software Update) my MacBooks seems to be defective.
After updating to 10.4.7 I heard the "whining" for the very first time on my MacBook. It cames from the area of the power supply connector. But that's not my main problem.
The next morning after the update, my MacBook seems to be dead. I switched my MacBook on, the start up sound was coming, but the screen remains white and shows no Apple logo. After 30 seconds a lot of vertical lines occurs on the screen. Nothing more happens.
After I checked some possible sources, e.g. the memory modules, I found out that reseting the PRAM seems to fix my problem: The MacBook was booting and working w/o any failures. Unfortunately, only temporarily.
As I restarted the MacBook after some time, the same problem occurs
Any ideas before I bring in the MacBook to service?

Missing files? Well the combo is exactly that, a
combination of all previous updates and security
updates. I think it's a misguided belief people have
that the Delta may be missing certain essential
files. Based on that theory you shouldn't use
Software Update at all for any updates.
AppleTalker, normally I'd agree with you on this (never had any problem using Software Update), but in the case of 10.4.7 it looks like Apple actually forgot some files in the Delta (i.e.Software Update) they originally posted:
http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060705002510509
More on the Intel re-release and build numbers We previously noted that Apple re-released the Mac OS X 10.4.7 updater for Intel-based Macs due to the omission of some files related to OpenGL performance.
According to Apple, the omission only affected the delta (smaller, version-to-version) update, with the combo updater apparently carrying the OpenGL-related files all along. In other words, if you initially applied the combo updater, you do not need to download any additional files.

• Strange issue in updating custom table after upgrade ECC6.0! Please help!

Hello everyone:
I have some code (shown below) that deletes and updates some SAP tables and one custom table:
        DELETE T5UBV   FROM TABLE DEL_T5UBV.
      DELETE ZCHRZIP FROM TABLE DEL_ZCHRZIP.
      MODIFY ZCHRZIP FROM TABLE WRITE_ZCHRZIP.
      MODIFY T5UBV   FROM TABLE WRITE_T5UBV.
COMMIT WORK.
For SAP table the code above works fine but for custom table it overrides all exisiting data! It should keep some existing data in custom table ZCHRZIP and append any extra data from internal table WRITE_ZCHRZIP. This functions as designed if I run in fore ground but in background it just overrides instead of modifying and appending! This is happening only after upgrade ECC6.0. Any thoughts? Please let me know.
Thanks.

Hello,
Im using Oracle 10g as a server and Oracle ADF frameworks (bc4j) in database handling.
I have the following problem:
I added a new field to database table. I added that new field to my entity object. Then I added that new value from my entity object into view object. I can set values correctly in code into view object ( object.setValue(y.getValue()) ). Log messages show that this works.
When im trying to execute update (x.getTransaction().commit() ), I am getting the following error message:
java.lang.Exception: Database update failed: JBO-26041: Failed to post data to database during "Update": SQL Statement "BEGIN UPDATE ... "
Any ideas why this exception raises?

they should normaly exist in the database.

• Strange! Cannot update extensive, published iWeb site.

I've been trying to research a problem in Discussions similar to my own but cannot come across a satisfactory answer.
For the past two weeks, I've experienced very slow "Publish" updating of my extensive iWeb site. In the last 24 hours, I've been unable to update the webiste at all. Here's the error message:
"Can’t create the file 'shapeimage2_link2.png.' The disk may be damaged, full, or you may not have sufficient access privileges."
Mind you, I'm well sort of my iDisk capacity, have the current version of iWeb, am running a reliable high-speed connection and have not experienced any hard disk problems that I'm aware of.
I have tried trashing the username/application support/iWeb/Domain file and letting iWeb build a new Domain file — to no avail. I've quit and rebooted — to no avail. I've run Disk Utility — to no avail.
Suggestions? I'm at wit's end!

Thanks, James, for your always helpful replies and information.
Paul, here are two things I tried with some success. I deleted new blog material — those which hadn't published — and added, then published, each new blog one at a time. Somewhere along the line, one of the new blogs apparently corrupted the ability to publish all of them at once. Also, I launched iWeb, put the Domain file (username/application support/iWeb/Domain) in the trash then published. When prompted to save the new Domain file, I chose the folder where the old one resided. Subsequent publishes have gone a bit smoother.
Still, one wishes iWeb were easier and more reliable for updates.

Thanks for the clue, sir!
That did it.
If searched wiki about KMS and it seems that KMS is better (if you're card support it). I hope that I can enable it again in the future.

• Iphoto window is acting strange after latest update

After the latest update to iphoto, the window will not toggle to the front of any other open window when selected. I have to minimize all other open windows.
Help!

Are you referring to iPhoto 9.4.3 on your Mac?  If so try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
