Strange networking/NFS problem

Hello,
Occasionaly I'm having NFS slowdowns, then I see this information in dmesg on the client:
nfs: server galaxy2 not responding, still trying
nfs: server galaxy2 not responding, still trying
NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out

But on the server, I see nothing in dmesg. But, I do see this:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0E:0C:72:83:51
inet addr:192.168.1.1 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.0.0

(notice the high errors/dropped/overruns)
The LAN is a GigaBit lan, on the server:
00:09.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corp.|82547EI Gigabit Ethernet Controller (e1000)
on the client:
00:0a.0 Bridge: nVidia Corp.|Ethernet controller (forcedeth)
The entry in rc.conf for the network looks like this:
client:
eth0="eth0 192.168.1.102 netmask 255.255.0.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255"
server:
eth0="eth0 192.168.1.1 netmask 255.255.0.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255"
Is this an NFS problem or a networking problem??
Thanks.

netmask should be 255.255.255.0 according to your broadcast
y should also have a look at network-components before your server also an easy one would be to change the cable
once our database was instable due to a cable-problem (was fine for 6 months before)

  • Strange network non-problem

The airport icon is fully lit.  My wireless connection to the internet seems to be totally fine.  However, the airport info and the network preferences info both say "no network selected".  I select my network, enter the password, but then it just jumps back to "no network selected".  I assume that it is actually connected to my own wireless router because I am connected to the internet and am able to surf the web normally, I'm just wondering what glitch is going on here?  I'm pretty sure when I used to click on the airport icon it would show the name of my network at the top of the list as the one it was connected to.  Now it just appears with all the other networks in range and only says "no network selected" at the top.  And I can't seem to do anything to select one.  Any ideas?  I say this is a non-problem because I am actually connected.  But I'm a stickler for detail and don't like when things aren't functioning exactly as they are supposed to.

FrenchToast, to answer your question:  Even though I seemed to be able to use the internet, the Network Name line still said "no network selected".  And It wouldn't change when I tried to select my network from the drop down list.  I also couldn't get the dot next to "Airport" in the connection list to turn from yellow to green even when the connection was totally fine.
HOWEVER, I just solved the problem.  I went into my router preferences and renamed the router (or SSID).  I then reestablished the connection to the new network name.  I then went to "Network Preferences" and erased the original name from the "Preferred Networks" list.  Then I went back to my router's preferences and changed the SSID again back to the name I had before and reconnected again.  Now everthing seems to be fine.  It shows my network as connected and in Network Preferences the dot next to "Airport" is now green.  Something glitchy was definitely going on but this workaround seems to have helped.  Weird.

  • Svc:/network/nfs/client problem in Solaris 10

    Hi,
I`ve been trying to figure out what is the problem with the below scenario for so long and till now i`m not able to.
i have a X4100 SunFire system with solaris 10 installed.
most of the services are not coming up (ssh,ftp,etc....) each time i reboot the server, and after approximately 3 hours everything comes fine by it self.
i noticed that the service :/network/nfs/client is taking too long while starting. This might be related to the problem.
See below the svcs command : hope this will be usefull :)
    bash-3.00# svcs -xv ssh
    svc:/network/ssh:default (SSH server)
State: offline since Wed May 20 16:37:45 2009
    Reason: Service svc:/network/nfs/client:default is starting.
    See: http://sun.com/msg/SMF-8000-GE

Impact: 3 dependent services are not running:

  • Strange network problem!!! Please Help!!!!

I'm trying to copy some files from my PC to my MBP on my wired home network, the problem is that it is very slow. So then I looked at the activity monitor and saw that the network flow is not contant, it keeps dropping all the time, like I have 100% peaks and then 0%. This is also happening on my wireless network. My using MacOSX 10.4.8 and Windows Vista RC1 on the PC. When I try to ping the PC verything is fine 0% of packet loss. What could be wrong???

Vista RC1 is only one notch up from beta.
I think they're up to RC3...which is a huge difference.
I would personally not put too many important files on a PC running RC1. Also, that vista-version may or may not have something to do with network anomalies.

  • Strange network prob setting up WRK54G

    Hi,
I have spent an afternoon setting up a WRK54G (not WRT) router and have come across a very strange networking problem. I am using the router to setup a small network in the office off one of the LAN points. I connected the router up and set it up with a static IP address and gateway for the company LAN so setup looked like (Office LAN socket - WRK54G - PC). Once done the internet connectivity using a pc connected to the router via cable was very slow . I replaced the router with a switch (simple 4 port netgear switch) just to get through the day and set my PC back up to the static IP. Later that day I tried to set up the router again and forgot to remove the switch so the setup was (Office LAN socket - switch - WRK54G - PC). To my surprise the whole thing worked. When cleaning up the cables I noticed the switch was still in the chain so I removed it and the same problem of slow speed and packet loss came back.
    Any ideas????
Can the WRK54G only take an internet connection from cable or DSL modem? Should there be a problem due to it connecting to a o a LAN?

I have similar settings as yours and it works fine for me.
I guess the dns or gateway is creating porblem for you. I have hardware firewall installed in our company so the lan ip of the firewall becomes geteway for me. so if I set up static ip for the router and give the gateway as the lan ip of the firewall plus the DNS of the ISP it works great.

  • Mountd just keeps on spinning, network/nfs/server never enters online state

    Hi Everyone,
I'm administrating a Solaris 10 5/09 Thumper, full patched to up until Sept 8th.
I'm having a problem with nfs, in our environment we create a new zfs for every home directory. This gives us full control over everyone's space, and allows us to reserve space for important users. We currently have about 350 zfs's we export to a cluster. When we rebooted this machine everything came up alright but svcs:/network/nfs/server never entered a running state. See below:
    root@x4500-2:~# svcs -l network/nfs/server
    fmri svc:/network/nfs/server:default
    name NFS server

    Has anyone seen this before?
I'm using the DTraceToolkit-0.99 & top, and see lots of cpu cycles using mountd; but there aren't any errors being generated.
    Thanks,

what shows up in logfile /var/svc/log/network-nfs-server:default.log?

  • I have a strange 3g data problem.

I have a strange 3g data problem.  At home I have zero 3G connectivity even though all bars are showing and says "3G" and wifi is "Off" ... unless I am on the phone and then magically the 3G data connection works perfectly!!  Does anyone have any idea what is happening?  Also when I bring my phone to my dad's or my friends house the problem disappears!! Is this a hardware or a AT&T network problem? os is 4.3.3
Also called ATT and they said there was no problem with the network and that it was a hardware issue.  Also restored the phone several times but the problem did not go away.

OK, no trouble shooting. The first thing I'd attempt is restarting in Safe Mode. If you still don't have luck try doing both a SMC and PRAM reset, it wouldn't hurt to do the SMC reset a couple of times. If still no luck let us know.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

My daughter has just bought me an iPad 2 from Dubai and set it all up for me but unfortunately the iMessage function doesn't seem to work. We keep getting messages, when trying to activate it, that there is a network connection problem - help!

Thank you both for your responses but my daughter was reassured by the salesman in the iStyle store (official Apple store in the UAE) that iMessages would work but conceded that FaceTime wouldn't. My iTunes account is registered in the uk and my daughter's iPhone has iMessages even though she bought it (and uses it) in Dubai. Can anyone else throw any light on this?

  • Network Accounting Problem

I have a serious network accouting problem arisen from content engine:
Our routers are connected to internal backbone router with enabling Netflow to bill the usage (from domestic to backbone) of each users.
However, the CE will affect the network accounting seriously because it will replace the sender IP address with its own address before sending out to the link.
Would you give me some solution to remedy the problem?
    Very Very Urgent!!
    Thanks a lot..

  • Network Extender problems w/Qwest customers during July 2011

I believe I have found the cause of the Network Extender problems surfacing in July, 2011. I am a customer who has been out of Network Extender usage for two weeks now. Read on....
Unbelievably, almost no one at Qwest, Verizonwireless, or Samsung (NE's manufacturer) has any idea what the cause is and neither Qwest nor Samsung knows that a problem exists at all.
After many hours on the phone to all three companies I finally believe I know the cause of the problem. The cause is an updated firmware revision that was pushed to all Qwest customers who use the Actiontec PK5000 modem/router. They have been pushing it out over the last few weeks, so the symptoms have been rolling rather than happening all at one time.
The latest version of the PK5000 firmware is QAP002-3.60.3.0.9.9 When the customer's modem receives that version update (unbeknownst to them), Network Extender is rendered inoperable... the modem does not recognize the NE is plugged into it and does not provide an IP address. The WAN light goes solid red, the GPS goes magenta and the SYS light goes red.
Because Qwest's PK5000 works fine with the upgrade (i.e. both wi-fi and ethernet connections work fine with my Macintosh MacBook Pro), they have no interest in solving my VerizonWireless problem.
Bottom line is VerizonWireless needs to get a patch created "yesterday" and made available to all Network Extender customers who use the Actiontec PK5000 Qwest modem/router immediately. I live in a rural area and despite the fact I've had a VerizonWireless cell phone for many, many years, I'll be forced into changing cell phone providers soon, as will every other NE user who has lost their NE usage because of this problem.
It boggles my mind that no one has figured this out and provided a patch for the Network Extender. Understandably, Qwest could care less this is happening, since their service is not effected. This is truly VerizonWireless' problem.
Now, what can you do??? Call customer service right now and get technical support. Give them the information above and let them know they need to develop a patch for the Network Extender to work with the new firmware (i.e. operating system) of the Actiontec PK5000 modem. It's only when they hear from a bunch of people that they will step up the urgency to find a solution. Thanks!

OK, what's the deal here. I've been having the same problems. Verizon gave me a new extender and I still have the same problem. The week of July 15th everything went dead. I live in downtown Denver and I still can't get service at my house. My network extender is no longer compatible with the PK5000 modem QWEST issued. Firmware got pushed out? uhh... OK that doesn't mean anything to me. Not my problem, but kudos to the gentlemen who figured that out.. Neither Verizon or qwest seem to not want to take responsibility.
So what's next? is there an extender on the market that is compatible with the infamous PK5000? Evidently, the guys @ Qwest I was on the phone with for 45 minutes seems to think it's some type of high speed low drag, technological phenomenon. I'd like to add that if someone from qwest or verizon tech support reads this, I do not have a land line at my house, I have never had a land line at my house so no I can't go to my desktop and troubleshoot the modem while on the phone. just to reinterate I live in downtown denver I do not have cell coverage at my house, and no it's not my house. Everyone in our area does not have coverage.
I've had verizon for over 10 years now and never had a problem. This is the first and biggest problem I had becasue verizon and qwest decided to "bundle" thier service offering...whatever that means.

  • T41 has Network Controller problem

I was given a T41 2373-7JU that I loaded with XP Pro. My problem is it will not  connect to the internet via it's browser. In Device Manager it shows a Network Controller problem and I've been unable to correct this no matter how many different drivers I've tried. Also, how do I tell if there's an internal  wireless card inside?  It did connect to the internet earlier today using my USB adaptor but now I can't even do that anymore. I've tried a dozen or so solutions without any success so where should I go from here?

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Following are the drivers you need for Ethernet and wifi card (and yes, as per support page there's an internal card installed in your system):-
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-62922
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-42683
To install the drivers successfully, you need to run the .exe setups from C:\Drivers.... for each device after the first setup completes.
For ethernet, the setup is in C:\DRIVERS\Win\ETHERNET\PRO1000\Win32 and for wifi C:\DRIVERS\WLLANCSC.
    Hope this helps.

  • Really strange network issue that is specific to OS X 10.6.8

Really strange network issue that is specific to OS X 10.6.8 on both 2 iMacs and an older intel Mac Pro.
Any system running 10.6.8 is achieving on average 15 –20 mb a sec transfer rates regardless of drive speeds, cables, network activity etc.. I've spent some time removing any cable , drive speed, router issues to the point where one machine dual boots into both 10.6.8 and 10.6.5
The 10.6.5 system has network speeds of 60mb – 80mb p/sec transfer rates.
Our older 10.5.8 PPC mac gets 80mb and my 2011 Macbook Pro 10.7.2 hits 60mb – 80mb consistently as well.
Any idea what the cause is?
    Cheers

Since your other Mac running 10.5.8 is not affected, you know that your AirPort router is functioning correctly.
What changed on your Mac? This seems like a post for either the Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard support area, or the support area for your model of Mac.
We normally handle questions about the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule in this area, but you can certainly wait to see if you receive a response here.

    Solved
    solution posted here: http://blog.lemon23.com/news/nfs-unter-leopard/nfs-unter-leopard.html
no more interrupts, everything is working fine.

I found your post while digging for answers to the same problem myself. Essentially, my NFS mount of my iTunes library (Centos 5.1 server, gigabit ethernet) was working fine until I hooked up my 40GB iPod (no problem with the smaller ones). I would get the same NFS disconnects that I had with iPhoto, which had made it impossible to use the NFS mount for it.
Well, the good news is that I found a copy of the post you had a link for in the internet archive: http://web.archive.org/web/20080212115443/http://blog.lemon23.com/news/nfs-unter -leopard/nfs-unter-leopard.html . Essentially, the author suggests 3 things:
    1) use the same uid and gid for users on your Mac and NFS server
    2) disable the generation of the hidden OS X files (e.g. .DSStore) by using 'defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true'
    3) change the NFS mount options to 'locallocks rsize=32768 wsize=32768 intr noatime'
I knew that 1) was important and already had that in place. 2) I don't think should make a difference, it didn't do the trick for the OP either. 3) essentially tells NFS to use local locks, to set the local read and write size to 32k bytes (could have used rwsize=32768 instead) and to allow for any NFS operations to be interrupted. I am not sure that the noatime option is supported in OS X, but on linux machines it tells the client to not constantly update atime on NFS files.
Digging finally into my system.log, I find lots of errors from lockd (lockd not responding), so my hunch is that the most important setting was the 'locallocks' option for mount_nfs (via the Directory Utility app). In any case, my disconnects (doing all 3 of the above) have vanished, even for iPhoto although I have only tested that very briefly.
    Hope this helps!
