Strange upgrade (pacman + pacbuilder) and permission alteration!!!

Hello everybody!
I updated my system with the following two-step procedure:
pacman -Syu
for regular packages and
pacbuilder -Sbu
(pacbuilder is an ABS manager) for ABS packages... The building of some packages with pacbuilder fails, but all is under control, since they were minor packages...
Ok, so I reboot my system, but...
My login manager (GDM) is totally different!!!!
There's a "safe" theme set... So I login in order to try to fix it through its settings-utility...
BUT IT DOESN'T EVEN START... So I try to uninstall and reinstall GDM, and pacman (thanks God) says:
(Personal translation from Italian, this message may differ in the English version of pacman)
attention: the permissions of the directories are different on var/log/gdm
filesystem: 1775 package: 1777
attention: the permissions of the directories are different on var/log/gdm
filesystem: 1770 package: 755
What does it mean? How should I interpret this message?
Is this the cause of my "safe mode"-running GDM and the impossibility to fix it?
How can I fix this problem?
ATTENTION: EDIT: I updated another Arch on another pc of mine, this time using only pacman, and I found the same problem. In particular I didn't say that as soon as I updated my system and exit Openbox, the screen became black and a window said there were problems with a "greeter application", and that I could not login, and I had to find another way... I'm sorry, I've not written the message, since I was so scared that I barely read the message, hoping it was not dangerous... PLEASE HELP ME! I spent a whole afternoon drawing with GIMP my own GDM theme, and, beyond anything, I'm so scared for my system!!!!!!!!
ATTENTION: EDIT: I installed slim and put it in the DAEMON array in rc.conf instead of gdm, but when I try to login, the operation fails. I tried 10-12 times to login, and carefully checked every single pressed key, no lock was active, so I couldn't make mistakes. The only two ways to login now are: using the "safemode" GDM or CTRL+ALT+F1 and text-mode login... Nothing else works... Help me please...

May need more detail, however it sounds to me like what your seeing is the latest version of gnome.  It's support of GDM themes is very different, for example administratrion>login window doesn't exist anymore and it uses regular GTK themes for style, like the preferences>appearance dialog.
I'm not clear on what else you have going on, but this may explain what your seeing with GDM.

hi, really sorry as I said I'm somewhat of a newbie, was waiting to see what you guys thought might be relevant so I could tell you what I've got, here goes:
    graphics card: nvidia geforce GTX660.
DE/WM (I assume is desktop environment): gnome
unsure about how I start X (sorry I understand I am a newbie)
oh and everything does seem to be hanging, ctrl-c does nothing.
there were no messages from the update, I checked pacman and didn't see any warnings, (is there any kind of log I can check in case I missed something?), I've chrooted into the disk through the installation medium to reinstall the graphics card drivers (as suggested here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=153206)

  • [SOLVED] Did pacman -Syu and now gdm, gnome, and pacman won't work

Hi everyone, I did a search for my problem, but cannot find the solution. Basically, I updated my computer this morning and as soon as the packages got installed my computer crashed. I am using another computer right now. These were the packages that were upgraded: dbus-core, bluez, dbus, gsfonts, libcups, libgdiplus, mono, openssl.
So after I installed the packages, my screen went black with some error message (don't remember what it is now. I believe it was something about GDM not working.) So I rebooted and "rpcbind" and "File Alteration Monitor" failed. Then I got a bunch of Gdm error messages with "gdm-binary[46081]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors"  as the last message. I don't know how to check the X server log for errors so I logged in and tried pacman -Syu again. I got this error "pacman: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libssl.so.0.9.8: invalid ELF header." I also tried startx and gnome-session , but they both failed to work as well. It seems like I'm having a graphics error. I don't know what to do now. Any help would be appreciated.

So I manually mounted my IPod and copied everything in my home folder to it. Then I installed Ubuntu. Maybe I'll come back to Arch one day, but for now, farewell. Thanks for all your help.
Wise decision -- Ubuntu is very stable (we used it extensively in my last place of business; I'm now retired). I've gone a different route, since I prefer to start small, build the environment I want and nothing more (which was my reason for choosing Arch). My preferred environment is pretty minimal -- no desktop system (no Gnome or KDE), just a window manager (dwm) and the apps I need. I did a test install in the last day or so and learned enough about Slackware (I first used it in the early 90s when it was pretty much the only Linux distribution) to convince myself that it will work for me. It's more of a pain to get the apps installed than Arch, certainly, but once you know how to do it and where to find them, it's not really a problem. But my objective is the same as yours -- get away from Arch's rolling releases. Again, as an old hand at both individual development and managing large software projects, what Arch is trying to do is difficult. Because the various components of the system are updated more or less continuously, it's impossible to thoroughly test the whole thing every time it changes. So on any particular day, you are likely to see problems, as happened to you, me, and other folks who have started threads in this category. And sometimes the problems are so severe you end up with a non-functioning system, as happened to both of us.
I would hope that, in the future, the powers-that-be at Arch would consider periodic, thoroughly tested releases, say every 6 months like Ubuntu and OpenBSD. The fundamental machinery of Arch is excellent (pacman, etc.), installation is easy, the documentation is adequate (I'm not as impressed by the wiki as others seem to be -- see the OpenBSD or FreeBSD documentation; what's available for Slackware is also very good). But I think there are tremendous quality hazards in the rolling release methodology, and forcing it on Arch's users is a bad idea, I think. It can be optional, for the adventurous. This is exactly how the OpenBSD people operate. There's a release every 6 months that is invariably rock solid. If they find problems after the release, they will make changes on a STABLE cvs branch. But you can also, if you choose, run what is on the cvs trunk, which they designate CURRENT, if you are so inclined and willing to take the chance on less thoroughly tested code. This is more or less equivalent to Arch now. I'm suggesting that Arch consider adding a STABLE version.

  • I can't update packages after upgrading pacman to 4.0.3

I know this was already treated broadly about two months ago, but I can't update after upgrading pacman because of continuous problems with certain signatures (at least one).
    I have already tried this:
    rm -rf /etc/pacman.d/gnupg
    pacman -Scc
    pacman-key --init
    pacman-key --populate archlinux
But I still get this error when trying to upgrade the system:

error: failed to commit transaction (invalid or corrupted package)
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
Could anybody help me? I'm pretty devastated with this.

Thanks everyone! I guess it was a faulty mirror.
I also had problems upgrading glibc because /lib had to be linked to /usr/lib, but I fixed it seeking for helpful tips on the forum. What I did was move everything from /lib to /usr/lib, shutdown, start adding break=postmount to kernel line, mount the filesystem, remove /lib folder, link /usr/lib to /lib and reboot. Then I reinstalled glibc and everything went well.
Now some fonts look half-cutted in Gnome Shell when the window or panel which contains them is in background and I don't know why. But it is not the first time I have "graphical artifacts" with Arch Linux on this laptop. I think has something to do with the compositing.

  • [Solved]Upgrade pacman 4.1 - no usable package repositories configured

Hi, i am another guy who fail with upgrade pacman 4.1
I has pacman 4.0.3-7 and for some dependancy (like yaourt), i need pacman 4.1
He wasn't in system update, so i download it from git : git clone git://projects.archlinux.org/pacman.git pacman
    sh ./autogen.sh
    ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var --enable-doc
    make -j8
    sudo make install
And now, i got this error
    sudo pacman -Syu
error: no usable package repositories configured.
I backup my /etc/pacman.conf and use the new one like this topic : https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 7#p1254497
    I check the version :
    Pacman v4.1.0 - libalpm v8.0.0
I try to upgrade my DB
    sudo /usr/local/bin/pacman-db-upgrade
==> ERROR: /usr/local/var/lib/pacman/ is not a pacman database directory.
The only solution i found right now is reinstalling arch linux o.0
    Thanks for you help.

Why would you do that? Why would you not use pacman to upgrade/install pacman, or any other package for that matter?
Honestly, this was such a bad idea that I'm finding it difficult to keep myself from berating you with inappropriate language (some of which I instinctively blurted out when I read your post).

pacman-db-upgrade is a transition tool to convert pacman 3.x databases to pacman 4.x databases. Is there some guide that told you to use that to update the database?
I pride myself on trying to be helpful on the forum, but you do not seem to have any idea of how package management works on Arch Linux. This is all covered in the wiki and on the forum. I really do not mean to be rude, but I believe that you would be better off with something else as you seem to just be naively trying random shit.
If you really want to clean up the mess that you've made, uninstall the manually installed pacman, remove whatever AUR apps you have installed that prevent you from upgrading via pacman, then rebuild and re-install those apps after the upgrade.
I also suspect that you are using Archbang or some other distro given that you seem to be new to the distro yet already have yaourt installed. If this is the case then you should direct yourself to their forum. This forum is for Arch Linux.

  • Strange FaunOS pacman problem

Hello my friends!  I discovered FaunOS recently, and I had it installed on my HD.  I know that is a "sleeping" (or dead?) project, but I like it, really.  I tried to use PacTrac for a system upgrade, but I received some "Forbidden" messages from the console.  I replaced my pacman.conf with a friend's (Arch user).  I tried to upgrade some packages, again.  I had a few results, I can say.  After this, I replaced my mirrorlist with my friend's.  By that time, the pacman console don't want to open!  I  put the button "Install/Upgrade packages", the window opens, I choose the packages, but when I press "Install", nothing happens!:(
What is all about?  Please, help!:/

Well, I tried to updrage my packages and pacman itself, through the terminal:

  • Pacman -Syu and now keyboard only works as root kde

I did a pacman -Syu and now keyboard only works as root kde
Users can use keyboard in the basic console and this is a failure within KDE or the X-server.
On this upgrade I needed to add the portmap daemon to rc.conf.
I am running kerrnel 2.6.5-2. The upgrade lifted KDE to KDE 3.2.2. Xfree86 was upgraded previously and did not present this problem so the KDE upgrade is under suspicion.
My rc.conf daemons list is DAEMONS=(portmap syslogd klogd !pcmcia network netfs crond fam cups kdm)
Is there something extra I need to add?

    Hi colnago,
I tidied up my daemons, after considering how you've set yours. I agree portmap and fam are not useful. I now understand that the upgrade was leaning on fam so that it noticed portmap was missing... a red herring issue, perhaps?
I had no means of getting a dmesg log readout, because of the keyboard crashing. So I have patiently reinstalled kde 3.2.1, by way of adding the components one by one from /var/cache/pacman/pkg/. That works, so I can now pause and investigate if there are any any known issues with the 3.2.2 upgrade that shed light.
I did get an indicator that the DCOP server did not function properly. This happened as warnings and errors, when I installed an additional user.
    Thanks

  • Upgrading pacman behaves differently on different systems

This isn't a problem, since I haven't noticed any issues. I'm only curious to why two systems behave differently.
    System 1 (x86_64 locale sv_SE):
Interrupts upgrade of system to specifically upgrade pacman first.
    System 2 (x86 locale ru_RU):
Doesn't interrupt, instead it upgrades pacman along with other packages.
Is there a logic answer to why? I'm only asking, since I don't know whether such differences could create problem for some users.

Look into your /etc/pacman.conf for the SyncFirst variable. It defaults to having pacman there, and it is the list of which packages to upgrade first like on your first system. See man pacman.conf for more details.

I just upgraded to Mavericks and now my Intel iMac is running more slowly. There have been no other changes. What's up with this???

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running a program at the instance of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There wiil be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Full System Upgrade: pacman -Syyu

When I use that command, it asks me if I want to replace iwiwfi and rt2x00-cvs with kernel26. Am I supposed to hit yes on these? Cause when I do it can't resolve the dependencies because archboot used both of them. So I am trying it with no while I wait for a response. Thanks in advance.

You should file a bug for archboot.  It should no longer depend on these packages as they a build into the kernel.
    My suggestion:
    pacman -R archboot
    pacman -Syu
    pacman -Sd archboot
That will remove archboot, upgrade your system and install archboot while ignoring dependancy problems.

  • [solved] Questions about pacman -Qk and -Qkk output.

I was looking through the pacman manual today to see if there was anything I could add to a some Arch maintenance scripts I've been working on and came across -Qk which, among other things, lists missing files. I ran pacman -Qk in terminal and found a few package installations were missing files. I reinstalled them manually check again and the files were no longer missing. The first package I saw that was missing a file was gnome-command-center for instance.
So I really have two questions.
    1) Is it normal for packages to have missing files?
    2) Is it a good idea to reinstall these packages to replace the missing files.
I then ran pacman -Qkk, and got even more disturbing information such as modification time mismatches and size mismatches.

I'm assuming all of those are bad. "Warning" rarely sounds friendly, though for those files I've modified myself, such as passwd, shadow, and group, its okay. I assume I can fix msot of these by running # pacman -S {package}?

Awk processes the output from pacman, splits it using [white]space[⁣s] as delimiter and prints only first field $1, which is the package name. Those reoccur if several files are involved, so just to be sure, I also used awks sort, maybe that could be skipped or alternatively sort command outside awk used instead. This sorted output gets fed into uniq, which outputs only unique strings coming from input. And that leaves you with the package list.
Edit: I think those are whitespaces actually, which if I recall correctly include space.
Edit2: So this might be better and certainly a little faster:
    pacman -S $(pacman -Qkq | awk '{print $1}' | uniq)
    # And this should be even faster, since the output pacman
    # delivers seems to be sorted anyway. Should you parse
    # something else, use my first suggestion instead.
    pacman -Qkq | awk 'BEGIN{ y=0; }; {x=$1; if (x == y){ next; }; print $1; y=x;}'
Edit3: Out of curiosity I tested different methods measuring execution time with a input file consisting out of 1443 lines from pacman -Qkkq. Here are the results and the bottom is the test script.

The awk internal sorting is the slowest method, but it seems it initializes longer, since there appears to be a constant difference between internal and external sorting. Uniq fed by awk is faster with smaller loops, but gets slower if repeated more often, yet overall remain fastest with the unique function I used within awk. It appears the more lines the input has, the slower uniq in comparison uniq in awk gets. Here is the testing script:
    #!/bin/bash
    LOOPS=('10' '20' '50' '100' '200' '500' '1000' '2000' '5000' '10000' '20000' '50000');

Hi there - I just completed a leopard upgrade. Strangely enough, after installation and the subsequent reboot, i cannot get the finder to work. Upon clicking on the finder it just sits there and gives the 'waiting' signal (rotating multicolor circle). I opened the activity monitor and killed it, clicked again. nothing. Rebooted numerous times.. nothing. I also tried to install the leopard software update. The files download fine but will not install. I assume this has to do with the finder problem. Any ideas on how to fix this? thanks!!
There are really two "Finders," the one in the dock and the one that actually runs the GUI.
When you click on your desktop, you see the Finder menu on the top right. Do any of those functions work?
For example, if you click Go->Home, does the Finder window open as normal?
If so, you may simply have a corrupted Finder alias in your dock.
I would first run DU and perform a disk check and repair permissions.
How to get to DU? Again, if the top right Finder menu works, select Go->Utilities and run DU from there.

  • I can't upgrade pacman

    Hello,
I have postponed the upgrade of the system due to the exams period. Today, I tried and I get an error. Do you have any clue what I should do?

Q means query so you're merely telling us you already have the versions needed
valgrind and pacman have been upgraded recently so if you remove package-query (and yaourt), upgrade pacman and then the other stuff and reinstall yaourt if you wish

  • Upgraded to Lion and now Mail does not show attachments in the Send Box (for new messages only).

After upgrading to Lion and switching Mail to the classic mode, I can no longer see if messages have attachment in my Send Box. However, I can go into the message and see the attachment.
Strangely, all my messages prior to the upgrade show their attachments.
I've looked through the preferences and don't see a swith for this.
    Any suggestions. Thanks.
    Blair

Walter, thank you for the suggestion.
Perhaps I am not explainging myself very well.
In the Send Box new messages do not show the clip in the Attachments column. The image below is of two messaegs, both of which have an attachment, yet no clip is shown (this is also true of the Draft Box).
In all other boxes, an attachment is shown with a clip (see below).
I need the clips to be shown in all mail boxes.
    Thanks.
    Cheers, Blair

  • Upgraded pacman, now cannot reach any servers.

I just upgraded pacman to 4 and ran "sudo pacman-key --init" as the output told me.  Now if I try to install a package or upgrade with pacman -Syu, i cannot reach any server.  My internet connection is working fine and I even tried to access some servers though the web interface an it loaded fine.  I tried the re-install instructions from with arch wiki where i download the tar.gz from the web and extract it to root and it still times out when trying to access servers.  It would be greatly appreciated it you guys could help me get this to work.

This might possibly explain some of the problems I've had with the internet connection on my LAN, with windows, linux and squeezebox devices galore. I take this thread as a pointer as to where to look for solutions even there.
