Strange VLAN issue on aironet access points

I'm setting up some access points for WPA. I've ran into a strange issue. The client VLAN (VLAN that the users will be put into) is 1, and the native VLAN is 10. The RADIUS server is in VLAN 1 (but I have a test RADIUS server in VLAN 10 as well). I can connect from the access point to a RADIUS server in either VLAN, and from the RADIUS servers to the access point as well. When I point to a RADIUS server in VLAN10 authentication works fine. If I point to a RADIUS server that is located in VLAN1, and I put the wireless clients in VLAN10 it works fine. But for some reason when I have the RADIUS server and the clients in VLAN (1) and the native (BVI1) interface in VLAN 10 the authentication packets never seem to get to the RADIUS server. It is as if the authentication is being sources out of the wrong VLAN. I can?t find any docs to say that this isn?t a supported configuration.

Hi Shannon,
have a look here:

Significance of Native VLAN
When you use an IEEE 802.1Q trunk port, all frames are tagged except those on the VLAN configured as the "native VLAN" for the port. Frames on the native VLAN are always transmitted untagged and are normally received untagged. Therefore, when an AP is connected to the switchport, the native VLAN configured on the AP must match the native VLAN configured on the switchport.
Note: If there is a mismatch in the native VLANs, the frames are dropped.
This scenario is better explained with an example. If the native VLAN on the switchport is configured as VLAN 12 and on the AP, the native VLAN is configured as VLAN 1, then when the AP sends a frame on its native VLAN to the switch, the switch considers the frame as belonging to VLAN 12 since the frames from the native VLAN of the AP are untagged. This causes confusion in the network and results in connectivity problems. The same happens when the switchport forwards a frame from its native VLAN to the AP.

  • Dynamic VLAN Assignment with RADIUS Server and Aironet Access Points

    Hi Guys,
I would like to go for "Dynamic VLAN Assignment with RADIUS Server and Aironet Access Points 1300". I want the AP to broadcast only 1 SSID. The client find the SSID ->put in his user credential->Raudius athentication->assign him to an specific vlan based on his groupship.
The problem here is that I don't have a AP controller but only configurable Aironet Access Points 1300. I can connect to the radius server, but I am not sure how to confirgure the AP's port, radio port, vlan and SSID.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_configuration_example09186a008076317c.shtml#switch
    I go through some references:
    3.5  RADIUS-Based VLAN Access Control
As discussed earlier, each SSID is mapped to a default VLAN-ID on the wired side. The IT administrator may wish to impose back end (such as RADIUS)-based VLAN access control using 802.1X or MAC address authentication mechanisms. For example, if the WLAN is set up such that all VLANs use 802.1X and similar encryption mechanisms for WLAN user access, then a user can "hop" from one VLAN to another by simply changing the SSID and successfully authenticating to the access point (using 802.1X). This may not be preferred if the WLAN user is confined to a particular VLAN.
There are two different ways to implement RADIUS-based VLAN access control features:
    1. RADIUS-based SSID access control: Upon successful 802.1X or MAC address authentication, the RADIUS server passes back the allowed SSID list for the WLAN user to the access point or bridge. If the user used an SSID on the allowed SSID list, then the user is allowed to associate to the WLAN. Otherwise, the user is disassociated from the access point or bridge.
    2. RADIUS-based VLAN assignment: Upon successful 802.1X or MAC address authentication, the RADIUS server assigns the user to a predetermined VLAN-ID on the wired side. The SSID used for WLAN access doesn't matter because the user is always assigned to this predetermined VLAN-ID.

    Thanks.

I'm not sure if the Autonomous APs have the option for AAA Override.  On the WLC, I can go into the BSSID, Security, Advanced, and there's a checkbox that I would check to allow a Radius server to send back the VLAN.
I did a little research and it looks like the 1300 may give this option but instead is defined as "VLAN Override".  I've found the release notes for 12.3(7)JA5 (not sure what version you're running) that give mention and a link to configuring EAP on page 4: http://www.ciscosystems.ch/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/1300/release/notes/o37ja5rn.pdf

  • Bootup order on Cisco Aironet Access Points

    Hello folks
Could you please help me in clarifying the bootup order on Cisco Aironet Access Points
Does the SNMP Agent on the device start before the Startup config is copied to Running Config ?
Because everytime the Cisco Aironet Access Point restart , SNMP trap  is generated from Admin down WLAN interfaces (Dot11Radio1/Dot11Radio0) mentioning "Administratively down " .
So my best assumption is that
Access point Restarts - > SNMP Engine starts -> Startup Config is copied to Running config -> Interface is made admin down -> SNMP Trap is sent
    Is that correct?
    Please help !
    Anup

The Clean Access Manager (CAM) manages out-of-band Clean Access Servers (CASs) and switches through the admin network. The trusted interface of the CAS connects to the admin/management network, and the untrusted interface of the CAS connects to the managed client network.
When a client connects to a managed port on a managed switch, the port is set to the authentication VLAN and the traffic to/from the client goes through the Clean Access Server. After the client is authenticated and certified through the Clean Access Server, the port connected to the client is changed to the access VLAN. Once on the access VLAN, traffic to and from certified clients bypasses the Clean Access Server.
In most OOB deployments (except L2 OOB Virtual Gateway where the Default Access VLAN is the Access VLAN in the Port profile), the client needs to acquire a different IP address from the Access VLAN after posture assessment.
For Real-IP/NAT-Gateway setup, the client port is bounced to prompt the client to acquire a new IP address from the admin/access VLAN.
The below URL describe the configuration steps needed to set up your OOB deployment:
    •Configure Your Switches
•Configure OOB Switch Management in the CAM
•Configure Access to Authentication VLAN Change Detection

    Regards,

    Hi Niham,
You can try few things to troubleshoot this -
    1. check the reachability of Radius server from your wlc (ping).
    2. verify the IP address of Raduis server configured on wlc.
    3. wlc in the Radius server ?
    4. Shared Secret must be same on wlc and in raduis server.
Plz do not forget to rate useful post.

  • Wireless Client Authentication issues when roaming Access Points (Local)

I have a Cisco 5508 with Software version 7.4.121.0 and Field Recovery 7.6.101.1.
There are a handful of clients that when roaming between AP's with the same SSID that get an authentication issue and have to restart the wireless to get back on.
    From Cisco ISE
    Event
    5400 Authentication failed
    Failure Reason
11514 Unexpectedly received empty TLS message; treating as a rejection by the client
    Resolution
Ensure that the client's supplicant does not have any known compatibility issues and that it is properly configured. Also ensure that the ISE server certificate is trusted by the client, by configuring the supplicant with the CA certificate that signed the ISE server certificate. It is strongly recommended to not disable the server certificate validation on the client!
    Root cause
While trying to negotiate a TLS handshake with the client, ISE expected to receive a non-empty TLS message or TLS alert message, but instead received an empty TLS message. This could be due to an inconformity in the implementation of the protocol between ISE and the supplicant. For example, it is a known issue that the XP supplicant sends an empty TLS message instead of a non-empty TLS alert message. It might also involve the supplicant not trusting the ISE server certificate for some reason. ISE treated the unexpected message as a sign that the client rejected the tunnel establishment.
I am having a hard time figuring out what is causing this. My assumption is if there were a problem with the Controller or AP configurations then it would happen to everyone. My further assumption is if the client had a problem with their laptop (windows 7) then why does work at other times? So I have checked and the ISE certificate is trusted by client.
Is something happening that the previous access point is holding on to the mac and the return authentication traffic is going to the old AP instead of the new one or something like that which is corrupting the data?
I also had this from Splunk for the same client:
    Mar 5 13:44:51 usstlz-piseps01 CISE_Failed_Attempts 0014809622 1 0 2015-03-05 13:44:51.952 +00:00 0865003824 5435 NOTICE RADIUS: NAS conducted several failed authentications of the same scenario
FailureReason="12929 NAS sends RADIUS accounting update messages too frequently"
Any help on this would be appreciated. These error messages give me an idea but doesn't give me the exact answer to why the problem occurred and what needs to be done to fix it.
    Thanks

  • VLANs thru a 350 Access Point

I'm considering use of 350 access points connected to Catalyst 4000 switches with a few Symbol phones & Call Manager. There may also be some (few) wireless PC cards also connecting thru the same APs. On my wired network, the phones, gateways, etc are on separate VLANs than the data devices. Is this possible using wireless APs? Do APs know anything about trunking or VLANs or is this strictly up to the switch port to which they are connected?

    Is that true?
I had that question too before. I did call Cisco Tac, but they confirm me that was not supported.Because the Vlan trunk frame is a little difference with normal ethernet frame, so the AP doesn't recogonize it ,and will drop it.
Actaully it is simmilar as you put a hub between a trunk line, the trunk doesn't work with that.
In theory , it is reasonable not to work with vlan trunk, but I didn't do any lab to test it.
Icarr , are you really sure it works? There is not any problem ?
    Thanks

  • G4  (10.4.11) airport (9.52) wifi connectivity issue w WPA access point

I am struggling to resolve a wi-fi connectivity issue between a G4 imac with airport card and a netgear wireless-n access point.
The set up is as follows - the broadband comes into a Netgear router (DG834Gv5)which my Intel imac connects wirelessly to. Two daughter's den is away downstairs so I run an ethernet cable from the main netgear router to a netgear Pro-safe wireless access point (WNAP210) as an extender (we live on a houseboat so there are metal bulkheads and the like inbetween.
In the den older daughters G5 wirelessly connects to the Netgear access point easily through a WPA-PSK connection.
Younger daughters G4 running 10.4.11, with original airport card running firmware 9.52 (airport admin utility 4.2) refuses with the 'wrong password' error (it isn't - I have checked 50x) or sometimes just 'there was an error joining'.
It can see the network strongly (the airport menubar icon goes full, then cuts, then flashes on, then drops) but refuses any traffic.
This G4 can however connect, weakly, with my upstairs router which is also WPA-PSK protected (same password)!
I have read all the forums on this and despite some non-expert posts muddling the issue I believe that this SHOULD be possible. Not WPA2 I know but basic WPA.
In addition the options in the netgear extender are b&g (like upstairs which works), g or n. So I have selected b&g - no difference.
Currently I have had to set a separate channel for her and leave it unsecured which isn't a long term option (I am just hoping that even the cleverest war-driver cant sneak in through the extender, back up to the traffic between my Intel and the main router !!?)
Can anyone suggest what I might be missing in the conjuration (sic, ahem) configuration settings either on the G4 or the Netgear box ?
Is it enough to turn the broadcasting of the open channel name off and so render it invisible ?
Thanks in advance for any expert person's attention

    hi kathryn
did it have to be the Telekom, by all means??
anyway, first of all a link to a video where a german comedian writes a letter to steve jobs demanding he chose any carrier but the DTAG for the iPhone distribution in germany - really funny!
    http://bit.ly/4B4OdQ
OK, I´m currently downloading the speedport manual from their website and will look through it, in order to see if there´s something in there..
as a first guess I´d try looking at the wireless prefs of that speedport box. I guess it supports by default 802.11a/b/g, whereas the G4 only does 802.11b (the "normal" airport). Try selecting only the 802.11b portion from the speedport (that makes networking somewhat slower for airport express computers, but shoudn´t be a problem since it´s still at least as fast as basic DSL service (11MBit vs 2 or 6 MBit)
    cheers

  • Aironet access-point 1231G reboots itself frequently...

    Hi there,
We have one 1231G access-point which reboots itself after every certain time, its uptime has never crossed some 30 - 35 mins, usually it remains to 10 -15 mins. Some days ago, I saw a similar problem being discussed on thsi plateform but after the NetPro being changed, I could not find the progress on that thread. The guys in that thread suggested to physically separate the wireless controllers and then re-attach it back. Instead of doing this I tried physical reboot/power-cycle of thsi access-point. That access-point behaved normally for some days but after some that it aain posed the same problem. Kindly help me with probable solutions to it.
    Thanks and regards,
    Gaurav

This looks good to me, although let me know your thoughts on it.
One thing I have observed that the it showed a high CPU spike when it reboots and stops responding on the network. sho proc cpu his command, just after the reboot shows a spike of between 85 to 100% CPU utilisation. Any thoughts!

  • SG300-28P and aironet access points

    Dear support,
does Cisco SG300-28P provide enough PoE to power access points 1550 and 1600?
    Thank you

Hi Mireille, it should. The 1550 is 802.3af compliant.
The 1600 may be interesting because it can actually draw up to 15.4 watt of power and you may run into limitations of cable. It is also 802.3af compliant.

Some of my access-points (Light Weight) just keep asking username/passwords when accessed through web and clicked on any option available there. You sure it's LWAP?  The reason why I'm asking because you would NOT be able to access an LWAP over HTML because it's LWAP.

  • Strange WLAN issue - can't access secure sites

    Hi!
I've just bought a Toshiba L100-120. Everything is fine except the following.
I can't access secure sites with the built-in Intel 3945abg device. Other sites are OK.
If i connect LAN, everything is fine. If I insert my PCMCIA-wireless card, also everything works. The only problem is: to access secure sites with the Intel wireless device.
I already changed the drivers, I tried everything. It's very strange :(
Many thanks if anybody has an idea!!!!

    Hi
Im a little bit confused. Do you mean the secured WLan or secured internet websites????
If you cannot enter the secured, encrypted WLan you need to enter the right key.
In other case if some websites are not displayed you could try to change the IE privacy settings for the Internet zone.

  • Guest use of a Aironet 1131AG Access Point

I have 2 WLAN's using (mostly) D-Link products - one is for staff only and the other is for guests, and is totally separate from our LAN.
I'm disappointed with D-Link and want to change-over to all-Cisco AP's. I'm fairly satisfied with the 1131 and wish to build on it.
The manual mentions a guest SSID, but I have reservations about network security. (I am thinking of using a single WLAN with multiple SSID's to handle the staff and guests.) What is the opinion on this forum on this issue? (I'm very new to Cisco and classify myself as little more than a beginner with wireless in general.)

  • Blackberry Z10 connection with an Aironet Cisco Access Point 1200

    Hi everybody,
I'm trying without success a connection between a Blackberry Z10 and an Aironet Cisco Access Point 1200.
We have no BB Server, we would like just to connect the WIFI.
I've checked this points during the activation of the device:
    There's no LEAP protocolle.
    There's an EAP-Fast possibility.
    There's Mac Address recognition possibility.
When we try to use the EAP-Fast possibility, we generate a .pac file, but i don't know where i can put this file so that the Blackberry recognize this file. I've search the whole day and didn't find anything... there's simply no explanation with the Z10 around the .pac file without a BB Server.
I've try the Mac Address recognition and it simply doesn't work (no error the search time is too long)
Every other older smartphones - Blackberry (there's 4 devices) are working.
Anyone have an idea about? a suggestion? a list of compatible WIFI Devices?
    Thank you ahead.
    Have a nice day.
    Joel.

Sorry i don't understand your answer.
I'm not a developper but a system administrator.
I just would like to use a Balckberry Z10 with our Wifi/Router Aironet Access Point 1200.
    not more.
    Best regards,
    Joel

  • Is my aironet 1100 access point dead?

    Hello,
I purchased a second hand cisco aironet access point on Ebay and I am having trouble getting into the configuration program. I have reset the device back to factory defaults and I get green led's when I plug it in. I have it connected to a pc running win xp via an ethernet patch cable. I have assigned 10.0.0.2/24 to my pc and when I ping the access point I am getting over 75% packet loss. The web browser will bring up the login box after a minute but after that nothing. Any suggestions? Is it dead?
    With Regards,
    Aaron McQuaid

    Aaron,
    Did you get this resolved?
I have the exact same problem. I am using an AIR-AP1121G and I can't see the AP anywhere. I can find it on my firewall sometimes, but sometimes the IP Address changes and sometimes it disappears completely.
I am pretty new to this type of AP. We have one at work I love, but this is my first one I am configuring.
    TIA
    Bill
