Strategy for database exceptions

I am designing our strategy for handling database exceptions which may occur upon saving for instance.
For example, if a user tries to save an object which violates a unique key constraint, I get that error wrapped by the DatabaseException class as documented.
The wrinkle is that I would really like to report to the user which fields caused this violation. We are using an oracle database for the foreseeable future, so portability is not critical.
Has anyone designed something which can get this metadata and attach it to the exception? Any tips would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
craig

I have found it very helpfull to separate the database / recordset from the rest of the project. If you create objects that model your records then the rest of your program doesn't know or care where the data came from. You could easily write store / retrieve methods to deal with the data from a file, over the web, from a socket connection, etc without having to alter your entire app. My advise is to do as little manipulation on the resultsets and focus on object manipulation instead. Mind you if your writing some sort of generic recordset "explorer" then this doesn't apply. You can't possibly model objects from some random recordset that you have no previous knowledge of. In that case you'd have to examine the meta data of the recordset to get field names, data types, etc.

  • Exception for database connectivity

    I am executing a procedure that calls some functions that get data over a dblink. Now I want to add some code to check for database availablity etc upfront in my procedure before calling the function and raise exception and end it.
    I was thinking of trying like
    select sysdate into t_date from dua@dblink
    Now I am not sure how to check the status of this sql statement .
    Any comments/advise is appreciated

    Hope this helps; Handling Errors in Remote Procedures -> http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14231/ds_appdev.htm#i1007937
    When the database executes a procedure locally or at a remote location, four types of exceptions can occur:
    * PL/SQL user-defined exceptions, which must be declared using the keyword EXCEPTION
    * PL/SQL predefined exceptions such as the NO_DATA_FOUND keyword
    * SQL errors such as ORA-00900 and ORA-02015
    * Application exceptions generated using the RAISE_APPLICATION_ERROR() procedure
    When using local procedures, you can trap these messages by writing an exception handler such as the following
    BEGIN
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN ZERO_DIVIDE THEN
    /* ... handle the exception */
    END;
    Notice that the WHEN clause requires an exception name. If the exception does not have a name, for example, exceptions generated with RAISE_APPLICATION_ERROR, you can assign one using PRAGMA_EXCEPTION_INIT. For example:
    DECLARE
    null_salary EXCEPTION;
    PRAGMA EXCEPTION_INIT(null_salary, -20101);
    BEGIN
    RAISE_APPLICATION_ERROR(-20101, 'salary is missing');
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN null_salary THEN
    END;
    When calling a remote procedure, exceptions can be handled by an exception handler in the local procedure. The remote procedure must return an error number to the local, calling procedure, which then handles the exception as shown in the previous example. Note that PL/SQL user-defined exceptions always return ORA-06510 to the local procedure.
    Therefore, it is not possible to distinguish between two different user-defined exceptions based on the error number. All other remote exceptions can be handled in the same manner as local exceptions.

  • Custom Error Messages for Database Constraint Violations Problem

    Hi
    I have added a custom message bundle for the model project as explained in
    37.8.3 in the Fusion Developer's Guide - How to customize error messages for database constraint violations.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E14571_01/web.1111/b31974/bcadvgen.htm#BABEFGCI
    Constraint Name : SYS_C0018574
    And I have following CustomErrorMessages class
    public class DBCustomErrorMessages extends ListResourceBundle {
        private static final Object[][] sMessageStrings =
            new String[][] { { "SYS_C0018574",
                               "Existing Record Found" } };
        protected Object[][] getContents() {
            return sMessageStrings;
    }This works fine when I run application model and adding records to vialate the constraint. So it gives me following message
    (oracle.jbo.DMLConstraintException) Existing Record FoundBut when run ui project it does not fire.
    Still it gives the message
    ORA-00001: unique constraint (CCBS2.SYS_C0018574) violatedCould you please shed some light?

  • Unproper ADF BC behaviour after database exception

    Hi,
    A have a problem with ADF session.
    I use ADF Business Components in my application and generally it works good.
    Unfortunatelly I experience problem when I face database exception (i.e. packages I use are not compiled). I catch such an exception in my web application, but unfortunatelly there is something wrong with views or business components because I get unproper results (usually no records at all). It's a problem connected with all views in application and it is not connected with the exception directly.
    The only thing that helps is logout and login (which resets ADF session).
    Is there a problem with database session, adf session or some connections settings/states ?
    Could you explain what is the reason for that behavior and tell me if it is a way to make application work with relogin after database error ?
    Thanks in advance
    Marcin

    Hi,
    no, there is not. From the description you give its hard to determine whats going on there, but at least I can offer a pointer to the developer guide to learn about best practices. Maybe this helps solving the issue http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/html/B25947_01/toc.htm

  • Database exceptions data missing in SMD 7.1

    Hello all,
    I have configured SMD on SolMan 7.1 SP03. I successfully connected 2 systems (ABAP single and JAVA single) to technical monitoring. Also SolMan self-monitoring was configured successfully. I can see some monitoring data in solman_workcenter, but I don't see any data in section Database Exceptions and Database performance like e.g. tablespace usage, last successful backup, reads per usercall etc... I can see current data in Database availability section - archiver status, instance status etc... There are obviously some data missing in BI as I get an info message : "No data has been transferred to BI system up to now for metric .....". Unfortunately I can't find out where is the problem so far. I can see SMD agents are connected and pushing other data (ABAP and host related) to SMD w/o any problems. Any hint is appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi Mahesh,
    According to log file, I find the message ‘The setup100.exe.config file was not found, therefore the DTSWizard and SQLWatson app config files were not replaced’. It seems that the SQL Server setup file is not complete. Please check that if the SQL Server
    setup file is corrupted, if it is corrupted, please download it again and reinstall SQL Server 2008 R2.
    However, if there’s no problem with the setup file, please check that if there is third-party software such as anti-virus software on your computer blocking the process of SQL Server installation. In addition, make sure that you choose ‘Run as administrator’
    to launch the setup and configure SQL Server service accounts appropriately with administrator permission during the installation.

  • WHAT IS BEST STRATEGY FOR RMAN BACKUP CONFIGURATION

    what is best configuration strategy for rman backup.AND BACKUP WITH RECOVERY CATALOG OR WITHOUT RECOVERY CATALOG
    PLEASE TELL ME
    Edited by: afzal on Feb 26, 2011 1:45 AM

    For simply two databases, there really wouldn't be a need for a recovery catalog. You can still restore/recover without a controlfile and without a recovery catalog.
    From this:
    afzal wrote:
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY window of 14 days.I am assuming you want to keep two weeks worth of backups, therefore these:
    alter system set control_file_record_keep_time=15 days;
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY window of 14 daysShould be:
    RMAN> sql 'alter system set control_file_record_keep_time=22';
    RMAN> CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 14;22 would give you that extra layer of protection for instances when a problem occurs with a backup and you want to ensure that data doesn't get aged out.

  • [Best Practices] Which versioning strategy for the web applications?

    Hi all,
    An important question when starting to develop a web application is how to correctly make the releases follow-up?
    That involves to adopt a versioning strategy to definitely fix the version numbers which will be associated to each release.
    The versioning strategy i have imagined is based on four different numbers with format like v.X.X.X.X:
       - The first one represents the version number of the database structure.
       - The second number is linked to the different finalized releases of the data model layer.
       - The third number concerns the different releases of the interfaces
       - And finally, the last number is the Subversion (or other code control system) last save.This strategy involves:
       - The subversion number is systematically reported
       - Changes on the database will affect both the data model layer and the interfaces; also, among the three first numbers only the first one will have to change.
       - Changes made on the data model level automatically involve a new interfaces release and will also be represented on the second number and not on the third.
       - Finally, bring some changes only on the interfaces level will affect the third and the fourth numbers only.My questions are:
       1) Is my choice correct?
       2) Maybe it already exists some versioning convention?
       3) What is your strategy?
       4) What is the strategy for the Jdeveloper versions?Best regards,
    Tif

    I would like people to be able to watch it in a flash player embedded on my site (and have it look good even if they click on a full screen button) or download to their iPod.
    Use the H.264 setting for iPod in Compressor. The h.264 file will play in a JW Flash Player and it's able to be downloaded for iPod viewing.

  • Backup strategy for ebs R12?

    Hi,
    I have a couple of questions regarding to backup strategy for ebs R12.
    Let's say that we have one application server and one database server running, and we would like to have a backup periodically for both servers.
    This means that we want to have the exactly same backup of configurations and other files for the application server and the database server in case of any fatal crashes in the servers.
    I went through some discussion threads and it seems common way is to use RMAN for the data of database and file system copy for application and database servers. But, I would like to know what's the best way or recommended way for the backup strategy for data and server files of Oracle e-business suite.
    Do you guys have any suggestion for this?
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    SH

    Hi SH;
    I suggest check first our previous discussion
    backup and recovery startegy for EBS
    Re: Backup System
    Backup Policy for EBS can
    If you make search you can find many other thread which is mention same question
    For your issue basicly what we do
    1. For our prod db, if possible we take weekly cold backup(sunday) and take rman backup also daily(full backup, but it depends system you can prefer to take incremental)
    2. For our system we take file system backup weekly(OS base)
    3. For application we take backup every sunday(for some system 15 days or 30 days period). The most important point here if your system prod, and if you need to apply patch to your system you need to have valid backup and also need backup for after patching
    One other important issue is we run preclone sh before take backup for apps and db tier

  • Patching Strategy for CRS and ASM homes

    I'm fairly new to RAC/ASM and haven't performed any patch set upgrades yet. Back in the simple days when I wanted to apply a patch set to a database, say from 10.2.0.4 to 10.2.0.5, I would create a brand new Oracle home ahead of time and apply the patch set to it. I'd name my homes like this:
    /opt/oracle/product/10.2.0.4/db1
    /opt/oracle/product/10.2.0.5/db1
    During the maintenance window I would change /etc/oratab to point the database to the new 10.2.0.5 and complete the database upgrade scripts. The advantages of this strategy:
    1 - Less risk installing software as nothing uses the new home yet. If something goes wrong in the install, no big deal. Research the problem and try again without being under the stress of a defined maintenance window.
    2 - No need to backup old home for back-out purposes.
    3 - Less time required for database to be down during actual patch window since Oracle Installer does not need to run.
    Now with CRS and ASM, is there a way to pre-stage a new home for those, but not have them "active" to the node until later during the maintenance window?
    For ASM, it seems like it would be possible to treat the same way as database and simply update ASM SID in /etc/oratab
    +ASM1:/opt/oracle/product/10.2.0.5/asm1
    but I'm not totally confident in that as I'm afraid the CRS home may already have references to the ASM home in the cluster registry.
    For CRS, it seems like the home is pretty well hard-wired into the node startup scripts and installing a brand new CRS home will probably disrupt the running CRS home.
    Any thoughts about this?

    Starting with 11.2 for Grid Infrastructure only "out-of-place" patchset upgrades are supported.

    Any thoughts about this?As of 11gR2 the ASM is part of the Grid Infrastructure, therefore it is running from the same home and not recommended to separate them. (although you can do that)
    By the way, what is your upgrade path? It could be easier to answer your questions if we knew that as there has been a quite a few enhancements and changes in the upgrade/patching process from 10g to 11g. (even between 11gR1 and 11gR2)

  • Derivation strategy for each regional office

    Hi All,
    We activated Budget Availability control at Head Quarters. One of regional office is not having budget so they dont want budget control. If i am not entering budget in FMBB transaction then system throwing error for regional office. How i can do control exception for particular regional office. We are maintaining one company code for all Regional offices.
    Regards,
    sree

    Hello,
    Is ot possible for you to identify the regional office based on the budget address?
    If yes, you should create a specific tolerance profile without any AVC control (100% tolerance, no warning, no error message) ; in addition to the tolerance profile you already defined with controls.
    You can use a derivation strategy for tolerance profiles ( target field as TOLPROF) : if the posting is done for the regional office, the derivation strategy for tolerance profile will call the tolerance profile without any control and no messages will be sent to the user.
    I hop it helps.

    Hi,
    Were you able to initialize the application using initialize_services.sh?
    Check Discover.0.0.log in <apps>/Discover/logs/ directory and check for more detail exception stack trace.

  • Required Packages For Database Install

    I'm installing a new 11.2.0.3 database on RHEL 6.3 64-bit tomorrow and I've got the base installation done and I've followed the following doc. to verify my Linux system has all the appropriate packages however in order to run the OUI (Oracle Universal Installer), I'm told I have to have X11 running on the server and be able to forward the session to my workstation so I can initiate the install over SSH. I just honestly have no idea what the package names or what it is I need to run X11 or X-Windows on my RHEL server. I don't want to install Gnome / X11 since Gnome is completely useless and a huge overhead on a server. I will always run the server in run level 3 (command line interface).
    Do you guys know the specific package names or what I need to look for in order to X11 working for OUI?

    **UPDATE**
    I adjusted the 'oracle' users' DISPLAY environment variable as suggested per the docs and attempted to run the installer again:
    [oracle@db1 ~]$ echo $DISPLAY
    *localhost:10.0*
    [oracle@db1 ~]$ export DISPLAY=local_host:0.0
    [oracle@db1 ~]$ echo $DISPLAY
    *local_host:0.0*
    [oracle@db1 ~]$ cd /u01/app/oracle/database/
    [oracle@db1 database]$ ./runInstaller
