Streaming music on different subnet

I've got a fairly basic network setup. I'm using adsl with a cisco 837 router. My isp has assigned me 16 static ip addresses. I've got a local dhcp server which hands out a range of ip's that have been provisioned to me via my isp which are used for workstations (laptops, desktops, et al), with the remaining staticly assigned (servers for example).
diagram;
telco=] 837/router -> switch -> devices
Everything is connected directly to the switch, except for wireless clients.
Now, to keep myself from running out of the 16 assigned ip addresses, I've setup a seperate subnet for devices which won't need contact with the internet world.
Those devices I've put under 10.1.0.0 of which I've given my airport express a 10.1.0.0 address.
Under iTunes on my iMac the airport express is listed in the drop-down box, when I select it, it sits forever stating it's connecting to the airport express.
On the other hand iTunes running on my laptop running windows does not present the drop-down box.
Is there any way to correct this, without having to give the airport express a public (non 10.x.x.x) ip address?

You have given the AE an IP address for a network,
not a device on that network based on a standard
subnet mask. Each network has two unassignable
numbers, the IP address of the network, and
broadcast. Try 10.1.0.1 for your AE.
I was just giving an example of the network configuration, the ip address of the AE is not actually 10.1.0.0 but 10.1.0.4.
If you want
devices on different subnets to have access, they
need to at least be on the same network, and then
alter the subnet mask for them so both subnets appear
on the same network.
They are on the same network, in the sense that I can talk to a 10.1.0.x address from one of my public ip addresses and vice versa. The only difference is 10.1.0.x cannot talk to anything wan side where machines/devices with a public address can.
Devices assigned with the
public network IPs will be difficult to configure, so
they see the private non-routable network, but I
think it can be done???? I would try another
scheme.... give the AE one of the static IPs and then
NAT with it. Then it would be a Gateway to the
computers behind it for the others in your public
range.... but that's just me . Hope that helps.
I am not looking to setting up NAT. I already have a gateway, the cisco 837 router. I already have a wireless access point which I recently mounted. Thus, I'm not needing any of the wifi capabilities of the AE, but just the airtunes facilities to local machines running on my lan.
Just to reclarify, I have an ip range in the 217.155.6.x block, and to keep myself from using all of the ips in that block, I'm using 10.1.x.x addresses (non-traversable) for the remaining bits that don't require wan side communication.

  • Airtunes on different subnets - Why not?

I've been googling for the past week in order to try and find out if it is possible to use airtunes on different subnets before I actually buy the device only to find out that it does not satisfy my needs. For various reasons I can not have all my machines into the same subnet.
Searching revealed that because the Airtunes relies on Bonjour which in turn relies onto mDNS (i.e. mullticast) it simply can not be used in two different subnets. I've read that it cannot be done everywhere. I just can't understand the actual reason. Being a network engineer for more than 9 years I find it hard to accept that if both local subnets on my 3640 have multicast routing enabled it still won't do the trick. Can anyone shed some light into this? Unfortunately I still don't own the device so I can not do any tests...
Any help would be much appreciated.
    TIA,

    GrSpider -
Bonjour (and mDNS) work perfectly well across multiple subnets so long as your router is configured to support (i.e. route) multicast traffic. I use Bonjour on a constant basis across three subnets with both Mac and Windows platforms for a variety of service location purposes (printing, file sharing, streaming media) and have no problems whatsoever.
The AirTunes limitation you're referring to is an Apple policy decision, not a technical issue. It appears they've restricted iTunes<-->Airport streaming media connectivity to connections that originate and terminate on the same subnet. I assume they feel it's a mechanism to help enforce digital rights management.
Just to summarize: I routinely print to my Airport Express units across subnets, and share my iTunes music library to non-AirPort devices on different subnets; I just don't (can't) share my iTunes music library to an Airport Express on a different subnet.
That one limitation aside, they've been a great addition to my network.
    FWIW.

  • Can I stream music to apple tv and airport express at the same time?

Does anyone know if I can stream music to both AppleTV and Airport Express (speakers) at the same time?
I have a TV in my living room and external speakers on my deck and want to stream music to both at the same time so I have the same music playing in both rooms - but I can't get an answer on IF I can do both at the same time or it I'd have to select one over the other?
    Anyone know?

yes - the built-in music app allows to select one speaker only at the same time.
now i've found the WHAALE Multiroom Player App (http://www.whaale.com) - and it sends directly from the iOS Device to my 6 AirPlay speakers. One of them is an Apple TV...
all "in sync" and without any special hardware and additional software.
And i am able to stream different songs to different rooms...
    Just AirPlay speakers - wifi router - WHAALE -> that's easy :-)

  • Itunes freezes when streaming music to airport express and to loewe air speaker at the same time?

    Hi,
    (first post )
I was recently offered a Loewe Airspeaker. I already had an Airport Express connected to a hi-fi system.
The Airport Express + hi-fi is in the living-room and the Loewe Airspeaker is in our bedroom.
Both are connected to my network via wifi.
I was trying to stream music from my iMac to both the Airport Express and the Loewe Airspeaker.
When doing this, I am able to get the same tune on both devices, but iTunes systematically freezes
=>music continues to be streamed but interface on the iMac gets the endless multicolor wheel !
Has anyone seen anything similar before, for ex. is there a similar issue when streaming music to 2 different Airport Express?
Any idea on where this is coming from?
Any idea on how to prevent this?
    Thx in advance
    Rodolphe
A few precisions on the configuration:
the iTunes library and corresponding music are located on a Mac Mini configured as a media server.
The iMac connects to the mac mini via wifi (shared folder). Home network is organized via an Airport Extreme.
Both computers run Mac OS 10.7.2 Lion and are up to date.

Well, repying to my own post... Might have found the solution: I tried to do the same with a Macbook Pro 2010 using the very same setup. And it worked perfectly! No freeze, no nothing.
    One explanation I see:
my iMac is dating back to May 2007, a Core 2 Duo 2,16Ghz with 2 Go of RAM.
So the computer's characteristics (or the Wifi component or the combination of all of this) might be not robust enough to allow streaming to those 2 devices...
    Anyone's got anything to add?

  • Streaming Music dropouts

Has anyone one else seen problems with there ipad or iphone when you are streaming music from a radio station, were the music just stops and you have to go and start it again. I have this problem on both my ipad and iphone. I have tried different stations and it does it using wifi or 3g.
    Thanks

as sir winston suggested, have you checked for _*wireless interference*_ ?
download iStumbler (may not work on 10.6) or AirRadar (it has a trial period) and note the channels other networks in your vicinity are broadcasting on. change the channel(s) of your network as far away as possible from those.
FWIW, i have hardwired most of my equipment to my TC. where physical ethernet cables are no option (due to location), i use *powerline adapters* _*such as these*_.

  • Not streaming music, video, etc

My iPad won't stream music, or play videos from YouTube, I player etc. I actually have a work ipad too, which will stream content and have compared settings but cannot see anything different between the two iPads. Ay suggestions?

I do extensive Photoshop and InDesign work with my 2011 MacBook Air. In terms of performance it is more than capable. I've not yet run the new Adobe CC software (and probably won't unless work subscribes for me) but the latest Adobe CS runs well. A 13" display makes things a bit cramped but since I work mostly at my desk, a 22" LG display solved that problem.
I'm not impressed by the rMBP computers - I consider them a gimmick. The display pushes a huge number of pixels and even the discrete video card is barely up to the task. In my testing there were times graphic redraws felt very sluggish compared to the new 2012 MBA. Also because Apple hasn't yet implemented a resolution independent GUI, I'm not comfortable using it for text intensive purposes.
In terms of doing what you want, either machine will do the job and should last through college. But due to the huge display the rMBP and MBA are hard to compare in terms of CPU speed etc because they are such different animals. I strongly suggest you find a place and time to use both and find which fits your needs best.

  • Using Airport Express for wireless printing and possibly streaming music

I have had the toughest time figuring out this Airport Express. It seems there are so many different ways to set it up. I've tried to read forums but just can't seem to wrap my head around what I need to do. I tried awhile back to join my network wirelessly but was having problems.
I don't really care about extending my current network. My internet service is through Verizon Fios and the router they provided works just fine and don't have any issues with connecting anywhere in the house. I bought the AE to be able to print wirelessly and stream music from my iMac in another room.
So to print wirelessly obviously the printer has to be plugged in to the AE, but does the AE have to be plugged into my router? Or can I have the AE anywhere in the house wherever the printer is? When I print, am I using my existing network or do I have to disconnect a computer from the wireless network and access a 2nd network to be able to print?
My first priority is to print wirelessly. If I can get it to work It'd be cool to stream music from my iMac. Obviously the AE needs to be where the speakers are, but again, does the AE have to plugged in to the router? And again, is this done through my existing network? Or do I have to stream music through a 2nd network? I apologize if i'm asking the same questions that have been asked in previous forums, I just haven't been successful thus far so wanted to see what response or tips I could get. Thanks.
My existing network has "WPA Personal" security set up on it if you need to know that.

but does the AE have to be plugged into my router? Or can I have the AE anywhere in the house wherever the printer is?
If you configure the Express correctly to "join" your FIOS wireless network, you can position it anywhere that it will receive a good, strong wireless signal.
The trick to setting the Express up to "join" is that you must choose exactly the same type of security for the Express as your main router is using. This is tricky when you are using devices from two different manufacturers because they often use different names for the same thing.
For example, when you say that the FIOS is setup to WPA Personal, we really need more information. There's usually a TKIP or AES associated with WPA. You have two choices on the Express for WPA settings, WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal. We can only guess which one might be the correct match for your FIOS network and if you don't choose the right setting, the Express cannot join the network and you have to start the configuration all over again from scratch and try the other setting.
Does your Fios have a setting for WPA2 Personal? Some manufacturers label this WPA2-PSK (AES). Or, maybe you find that your FIOS is using WPA-PSK (TKIP), which is the same thing as Apple WPA/WPA2 Personal. It's confusing. That's why we tell users to choose wireless gear from the same manufacturer. It's much easier when two devices talk the same language.
When I print, am I using my existing network or do I have to disconnect a computer from the wireless network and access a 2nd network to be able to print?
If you have a compatible printer plugged into the USB port on the AirPort Express and have "installed" the printer by setting it up, you will be able to print over your existing wireless network.
First things first. You need to get the Express setup to "join" correctly and get a green light. Then, tackle the printer setup.

  • Airport issues and streaming music

Hi all, after quite a bit of frustration with my AX, which I might add, worked well for years, I installed a NetGear wireless modem and am very happy with it.
One issue is that previously, when the AX connected with ethernet cable to my router, I was streaming music around the house, something I really enjoyed. This AX has now been removed.
I assumed that it was possible to connect the second AX to my new wireless network. (created with the new NetGear)
Not so, Airport utility still recognised the second unit and I proceeded to complete the process. But the AX would not re-start. Now, admittedly I only tried it once, but is it possible to still connect the second AX to my wireless network, and stream music, via AirTunes?
Appreciate any comments....am I trying to do the impossible?

    Ronald,
Have you reset the Airport Express?
Then try and join your new network.... which is now the NetGear...
I am running 3 Airport Express units to 3 different stereos and they all work fine. Even though I have a different Main Base station than you have, you should be able to "Join" your network.

  • Wlan router restarts when streaming music to Airport express

    Hi guys,
Yesterday I received my brand new Airport express which I plan to use for streaming music from iTunes to my Stereo. Unpacking and installing the lovely looking AE was like x-mas eve and birthday all in one .
After the installation where I set up the AE to join my wireless network. My wlan is a WEP 64 bit encrypted one, I had some problems adding it to the network with the wizard of the AE tool, but this worked just fine after using the manual set-up procedure instead where I chose WEP 40 bit in the AE tool. I also upgraded AE firmware as a part of this process.
So, the AE pops up nicely in iTunes, and I started streaming music to them, and it worked perfectly... for 10 seconds. Then the music stopped, the play-bar in iTunes stopped, and I also noticed that my laptop (Acer laptop running Windows Vista) lost the internet connection.
After some investigations where I switched off volume adjustment on remote speakers in iTunes and reseting and re-installing the AE, I noticed that the reasons for the problems seems to my wlan router re-booted whenever I started streaming music to the AE. My wlan router is a Zyxel Prestige 660, and it has worked flawlessly for the last two years. The AE is connected to the network, it gets an IP address, and it shows up just fine in the IP list on the router, that is before it restarts... And once the router re-starts the logs are gone, so it's not possible to see what's happening in that end.
Has anyone ever experienced the same? What can the root cause be? Changing the wlan encryption is unfortunately not an option since the router is pre-programmed from my ISP. I'm considering changing my modem, but I'm reluctant to spending 150 bucks on a new modem if this may not resolve the issue.
Any comments or suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Part 2: The mystic restart of the router was solved through changing to a Thompson Speedtouch 780 (luckily my ISP sent me a new wlan router and I didn't even have to pay).
However, the problem with the music breaking up when streaming from iTunes to the AE remains; The stream is broken after just a few seconds, and it also seems to mess up other internet traffic on my laptop . I've tried with the AE in a number of different locations, even 1 meter away from my laptop - nothing works.
As it is now, the AE is useless. What a disappointment .

  • I have an iPhone 4 32gb. Almost as soon as I unplug it it shuts down. As soon as I plug it in it powers up. Whilst streaming music

I have an iPhone 4 32gb using iOS 7.1.2. Almost as soon as I unplug it it shuts down. As soon as I plug it in it powers up again. Whilst streaming music & playing it through a Bluetooth speaker I unplugged the iPhone & it continued to play as normal for hours. The moment I unlocked the iPhone it shut down again. Does anybody know what is going on here & how to fix the issue? I've tried two different restore methods to no avail.

Sounds like expert advice!. How is it the battery if it will still stream music & play a Bluetooth speaker whilst unplugged until it's unlocked?

  • Can stream music to Airport express from Mac, but not windows

I set up an Airport express for music streaming from a pc at my uncle's, and he used it without issue for 1-2 years. It suddenly stopped working for him, and was flashing amber. I was unable to configure wirelessly, but finally configured it with my Mac and an Ethernet cable.
We are able to stream music to it now, wirelessly, from my Mac. But neither his windows 7 pc, nor his windows 8 pc can stream to it. The airport does not show up on iTunes on either computer. Also, airport utility on the pc does not see the device.
I have tried everything I can think of: different settings on the airport, disabling firewalls on the pc, etc.
Is there a way to get this working for him again?

    Bump again.
I'm also running into this problem. I have an Actiontec MI424WR and an Airport Extpress A1084.
When using WPA or WPA2, the AE can't seem to connect to the Actiontec. Has anyone found a solution to this?
Side note, I had been using a Netgear WNDR3800 as a wireless access point plugged into the (wifi disabled) Actiontec. In this configuration the AEs connected fine, but my network performance was pretty awful. In trying to troubleshoot, I'm removing the Netgear device from the picture to simplify. Now that I've enabled the wifi on the Actiontec, all my other devices (iphones, ipads, computers) connect fine, just not the AE's.
    Thanks for any advice.

  • Using airport express to extend network/stream music

    Hi,
I just bought an airport express to extend my network throughout my house and stream music to my stereo system in my living room. My time capsule, which is connected to the DSL modem and is the base station, is in one far end of the house, while the airport express is at the other end. It has greatly improved the range of my network and when using my macbook in the front room, it gets full bars, however, the when using airtunes to stream music with iTunes 9 and OS 10.6, the music will cut in and out randomly and I occasionally get unknown error -15000 when trying to connect.
I played around with the airport express channels (any channel other than 10 will receive an unknown error -15000 automatically,) adjusted the firewall, and adjusted Netbarrier X, my third party security software. I found information in this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21538?viewlocale=en_US
The only thing that works is moving the airport express close to my computer to remove the physical barriers. It plays perfectly then. Is it possible to buy a second airport express and plug it in halfway between my stereo and time capsule to boost the signal to the airport express plugged into my stereo? Will this solve the problem of the music stream cutting in and out every 10-20 seconds?

    Mad Cow wrote:
I checked and my signal is -87 and noise is -95.
At the risk of being the bearer of bad news, that's a rather poor signal value. Here is a description of what different ranges of signal-to-noise mean:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10329543&start=1
In the other post, you mentioned interference from other electronics. Could physical barriers be causing interference also?
Barriers won't cause interference, but they can reduce signal transmission. How far apart are the two units, how many walls are in between, and of what material are those walls made?
If this is the case, can I add a second airport express between my base station and stereo-attached airport express to boost the signal?
In theory something like that might work, but I'm not sure that an AirPort Express can act as a "relay" station between a "main" station and a "remote" station. It might require an AirPort Extreme. Perhaps someone else can comment on that possibility.
Can you relocate your Time Capsule to an different phone outlet? Can you use longer cables between the wall and the modem and/or between the modem and the Time Capsule to move the Time Capsule to the other side of the room to be nearer to your AirPort Express? Can you use a longer audio cable between your AirPort Express and your sound system?
You may be able to use a pair of Power-Line units
(http://computer.howstuffworks.com/power-network.htm) to connect your AirPort Express to your Time Capsule via Ethernet.

  • Stream music/radio via airport express' but not using itunes

    Hi,
I currently have 2x airport express in different rooms and I stream music etc from my itunes to them (via my airport extreme basestation). Is there any way I can stream net radio or music from other apps to it? E.g. I'd like to listen to the bbc radio player on my stereo, but it is only connected wirelessly to my airport express.
Being able to do this would make my mac experience near perfect!

  • TA24778 iPad - dropouts when streaming music via blue tooth to sound devices (Boom Box etc.).

    Hello,
I use my iPad as a central music store.
But -when trying to stream music via Blue Tooth I get dropouts all the time.
It doesn't matter how far away I am, or where I'm using it. It gets a bit better when deactivating the BT Keyboard (yes, shame on me, I'm using the old style way to hack text into the Pad...), but I still get dropouts.
I checked everything, batteries are fully loaded, dis- and reconnect several times, reboot, etc.
On my devices (Logitech adapter for my home-hi-fi, Soundbric) I get the same result.
    Any Ideas?
(Sorry - I can only choose "Using iPhone" as category, although I chose iPad first... Do I need to understand this?)

I'm not sure what you mean by "mixed with audio in Alsamixer". Can you clarify?
With that said, my problem did mysteriously fix itself after some update (presumably to alsa). Unfortunately, I noticed it in passing one day while I was changing the volume of something in pavucontrol, so I don't remember the exact update that caused it to work. But yes, my current setup does work now: I can listen to audio through my DAC and use the Yeti for recording. However, I have found that use of the Yeti crashes Google Hangouts, although it works perfectly in every other program I've tried.
As documentation, here is my current working setup (it is very similar to the above): in PulseAudio, the DAC is set to be a Digital Stereo (IEC958) output. The Yeti (called an 'Integrated Rate Matching Hub' in pavucontrol) is set to be an Analog Stereo Input. In the input devices section, I have the Yeti's volume set to around 58% (-14.31 dB), which is past the base volume a fair ways but produces decent levels for recording. The DAC's volume is set to 100% (0dB gain, the DAC takes care of the level). In alsamixer, I have the mic level for the Yeti set to 40.
Edit: This is a long-time-later edit, but let me say that when you have multiple USB audio devices, what USB hub and in what order they are connected seems to matter a great deal. If you can't get your Blue Yeti to work, try moving it to a different set of USB ports (controlled by a different controller) on your motherboard. This magically fixes the issue for me.
