Streaming video locks system

My system locks (loops) when streaming video services through Safari.
Nothing corrects the problem other than powering down and restarting system.
The problem is very unpredictable and may not occur for days.
I have a 2009 vintage top of the range 24" iMac with Yosemite (problem has occurred with previous versions of OS X).
3.06 Ghz Processor Core 2 Duo processor with 4 GB 1067 Mhz DDR of memory and NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512 MB Video
Is this problem hardware or software?

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be a series of messages in the Terminal window like this:
[Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
[Process completed]
The messages won't be spaced equally apart in time, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it. Then go to the next step.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Streaming video locks-up computer

Every time I try to stream video it locks the the screen and the audio sounds like a broken record ( about a second repeat). It has been doing this for some time. My wife uses this computer for mostly e-mail and surfing the web. Every time she runs a video it locks up.
Here is what I have done so far:
I ran the hardware test disk that came with the computer. Everything OK
I erased the hard drive using the 7-Pass erase and re-installed OS 10.4 updated to 11.
I installed i-stst pro and everything seems OK.
After doing all that , I tried to watch the new video announcing the new MacBooks via Safari and half way through the screen freezes and the audio repeats two out of three attempts otherwise the computer works great in every other way. Oh I did try several DVD videos I created on DVD studio pro and they all ran perfectly. Stop start etc. So maybe the problem is in streaming Video somehow.
I would really appreciate some help with this guys. Its driving me crazy.

    Thanks a brody
I really hope that is the case. But let me fill in some blanks that I should have mentioned before. I have a G5 Power Mac with duel 2GHz and it streams video all day long and has never locked up. It works so good I can't justify an Intel Mac yet. I got my wife a new iBook 2.4GHz and it Streams video with out any problem. So it's hard to believe that it's the internet provider. I want to put the G4 on eBay, but I won't do it unless it is perfect. A Mac Tech I know in another state suggested it could be my ram or the HD, but they both test Okay.
The G4 display goes black or has horizontal lines when you move the display back and forth but otherwise has a bright and sharp display. I didn't mention that because I didn't think a shorted cable would effect streaming video. But maybe it could. I have ordered a new video cable and when I install that I guess I'll know but if it needs anything else It would be nice to know while its apart. But in the mean time if you can think of anything else I'll give it a try.

  • Problem with live streaming video after system updates

    Dear all,
I hope you can assist me on this.
Yesterday, I downloaded the following automatic updates: iLife Support 9.0.4, Remote Desktop Client update 3.4, Mac OS X Update Combined 10.6.7, Airport Utility 5.5.2.
After that, I could NO MORE watch live streaming channels. To be precise, l can properly hear the sound, but not see the video.
I wish to underline the fact that before installing the automatic updates listed above, I had a clear sound and video of all live streaming sites.
I downloaded the latest versions of JAVA and Flash, but unfortunately they didn't solve the problem.
Therefore, I am quite sure the live streaming disfunction has to do with the system automatic updates. Is there any way to uninstall yesterday's updates without compromising the various softwares and OS performance?
What else could be if not related to the system updates?
Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance.

    Stan,
I hadn't heard of gspot before.  I downloaded it and it looks like a nice, handy tool.  Thanks.
After running it, I didn't see anything that caught my eye as unusual (corrupt file, unknown codec, etc.)  I have posted a screenshot at the following URL if you care to look.
    www.cbvideo.com/gspot/gspot-out.jpg
Now, let me add to the mystery.  I was just able to burn it without incident with Encore 1.5 and the same chapter mark locations.  There are only two things I can think of that would be possible causes.  1) something quirky about CS3, even though I've not had any prior problems in two years with it for my business OR 2) the file had become corrupted when moving from the capture computer (the older computer with 1.5) to the newer computer (with CS3).  As the file seems to be okay on the 2nd computer (plays fine in WMP and imports into both Premiere and Encore), I'm leaning toward #1.
I have been able to successfully work around the problem to finish this job for the client, but I'd still like to know what's going on for future reference.  If anyone has other ideas, please let me know.
    Robert

  • After installing ios6 on my ipad 2 I can't stream video on Netflix and it locks up my router

After installing ios 6 on my ipad 2 I can't stream video off Netflix and when I try to it locks up my router is there a fix for this?

After installing Lion the system won't recognize the G-Tech External drive via USB, but reconnected to Firewire and works okay.  Have an Apogee duet that needs the FW port, so really need to get the drive connected via USB.  Appreciate any assistance.

  • After firefox update it will not stream video, explorer will on the same system, what is the problem?

Firefox notified me that an update was available to install and after this install was complete I could not stream video from any site. I was instructed to clear my browser cache, I did ti no avail. I updated Adobe Flash and exhausted the extent of my troubling abilities w/o causing any major system unrest. I accessed the same video steam through explorer on the same system, but firefox is a far superior browser and I like to solve this problem to avoid having to find another browser.
    Please advise
    Aaron Schuler

I have the same problem.  After the upgrade, my wifi is greyed out, and the battery won't hold a charge long. I reset all the settings, tried all the things suggested by Apple, but it didn't work.  I took the phone to Verizon, but they said they can't fix it, go to Apple
I made an appointment at the Genius bar, where the staff was incredibly rude and dismissive. A representative told me that the wi-fi is broken and I would need to buy a new phone for $200, because mine is out of warranty. I'm due for an upgrade in a few months, so I'm not going to pay $200 for another 4S now.  I'm also not going to buy any more Apple products.  Their upgrade caused this problem, and they are not standing behind their producet.

  • Streaming video to ATV2 locks up iMac

I'm streaming video from my iTunes library to an AppleTV 2 over wifi. The iTunes library lives on a 27" i7 iMac w/ 8GB of RAM running OSX 10.6.8. All of the videos are .m4v files that have been run through Handbrake and transcoded to the "AppleTV 2" profile. I'm running the newest version of iTunes on the iMac (10.4). The AppleTV is also running the latest software version (4.3). The iMac is plugged into my DLink 802.11n router; the AppleTV pulls a DHCP address from the same router and both devices are on the same class C subnet.
After streaming for some period of time (sometimes 20 minutes, sometimes 2 hours) the video playback stops and I get dumped to the main Apple TV menu with the message "Connect your computer to the network". I walk into the computer room and the iMac has completely locked up; mouse won't move, keyboard input doesn't do anything, clock in the menubar freezes, etc. I have to hold the power button down until the iMac turns off, then reboot it. I've filed a crash report every time after rebooting but the problem persists.
It doesn't seem to matter if I'm running any CPU or memory intensive stuff on the iMac; I've had it lock up when it was sitting idle and iTunes was the only thing running. It also doesn't seem to be a problem with the AppleTV; I can stream Netflix for hours on end without problems.
Anyone seen this problem, know of a fix, or have any suggestions?

thank you, i was guessing its not possible but i saw someone here saying that his videos working even better from his iphone to atv then his imac to atv....just wanted to see im not crazy.
if i may ask u another thing, in order to see a video from my mac does it have to be .mov format (quick time player)? and if so- i need to convert all files to this .mov kind? how do u do it?

  • Anyone used VisionNet system "designed to provide real-time streaming video feeds over the Internet"?

I'm a Mac user and we only have Macs at home. My son just started preschool, which offers a VisionNet system--"a state-of-the-art system of cameras, servers, and software designed to provide real-time streaming video feeds over the Internet." However, on the VisionNet FAQ page, it specifies the following:
"You need a web browser that is Java-enabled, perferably Microsoft Internet Explorer.  If you're running Microsoft Internet Explorer, it needs to be version 6.x or higher.  We recommend Internet Explorer 6.x as this is the latest and most up-to-date product release.  Some Windows XP and Windows XP Professional users will have do download a Java runtime environment in order to use the VisionNet system if they have not done so already."
We don't have any PCs at home, so I  tried to log in using my MacPro desktop, my old MacBook Pro and my new MBP. Basically, for the last 3 weeks I've managed to access the site only ONCE from my desktop and after the time-out session, I wasn't able to log on ever again (I just cannot enter any keys on the Username and Password fields at login). If I hit the Logon button from the FAQ page, I get an "Unauthorized Access" pop-up message: "This site may only be entered from an authorized web site! Please enter this site from your childcare provider's web site." When I enter "OK" I immediately get a pop-up menu "Confirm Dialog Preference. Prevent this page from creating additional dialogs" but I still can't enter any keys at login. It does nothing!
The "support guy" has NO knowledge of Macs, so I don't know where else to go. The fact that I had successfully logged on once makes me believe it's something I have to update/delete/add in my Preferences in Firefox (I've used Safari and Chrome with no success). I've also considered purchasing an inexpensive PC just for this lousy VisionNet system  but I want to see if anyone has any ideas or advice.
Can anyone please help me?   Thank you in advance!

Here is a link to the finished PSA at Vimeo. It is not an outstanding production or anything too special, but it is worth noting that while some of the stills were doctored in Photoshop, the entirety of the editing and motion graphics were done in Premiere CS6.02; and the timeline playback was RealTime thanks to the MPE Hardware Acceleration and a GTX 560 2GB.

  • IPad screen locks up when attempting to stream video?

When attempting to stream from the BBC Iplayer or NOW TV the screen locks up and I  have to switch the pad off/on to get back to the main icon screen.   I have reloaded both apps, no change.

    1. Close all inactive apps.
    2. Reset iPad
    3. Try streaming video again.

  • Can I disable plugin-container.exe in 20.0.1 and still stream video?

When I try to stream TV shows with Firefox, I receive high Firefox disc usage warnings from my Norton antivirus. I believe this is due to the gigantic plugin-container.exe that Firefox apparently runs the Flash player inside of. When I look at it in Taskmaster plugin-container has been using 150 k + after just a few minutes and continues to go higher the longer I watch. If I continue to watch without doing anything, eventually the video begins to stutter and then stops while the sound keeps playing. My system slows down to the point where it takes 5 min to stop the player after clicking the control, and a half hour for my system to process the commands to shut down Firefox and restart.
I've been able to work around this by putting the AV into extended Silent Mode to save CPU and by closing the browser after each and every episode, then reopening it again. Obviously this isn't an optimal solution.
I tried shutting down plugin-container using the Taskmaster but this also killed my video. When I closed the window and restarted the video, the plug-in-container came back. In this current version of Flash 20.0.1 is there a way to disable it forever that will also allow me to stream video? IE8 didn't play nice with web pages but Firefox isn't playing nice with video streaming. Is there a fix that doesn't involve a new PC?

Thanks for the ideas and suggestions. We know the problem isn't with Flash because I was running it without huge background files or lock-up up while using IE8.
Installing an older version of Flash isn't an option because newer versions resolve some of the memory usage and flickering problem that older Flash versions caused on the new Hulu site. Some sites also require the newest patch and return an error message if an older version is detected.
I'm not sure what protected Flash mode does or doesn't do and hate to mess around with Flash when we already know it's been running without issues on my system using the other browser.
What I DO know is that the problem only started occurring when I made the switch from IE8 to Firefox. This weekend I had it happen again when I only had Firefox open and the Norton AV running out of Silent Mode in the background. Only the Flash thumbnails on the Hulu home page were active, not the Flash player and I started to get slowdown and lose mouse control.
I posted the issue over on the Norton forum also but don't expect a workaround. I think disabling that huge plugin-container file might help. By the time I've watched one video both Firefox and plug-in container are up around 200k each, much, much, much larger than anything else running on my system.
So is disabling plugin-containter still viable? Firefox crashing is never going to happen, if plug-in container freezes up my system first. Continually closing and reopening Firefox as a workaround doesn't seem to be way it was intended to perform.

  • Is there a way I can stream video from my 2012 AirMac to the Apple TV using airplay and at the same time stream the audio to an air speaker?

Is there a way stream video from a 2012 MacBook Air to a TV using Apple TV and at the same time steam the audio to an air speaker. Also the same question but using an ipad

You can try one thing. Follow these steps:
    1. On your Mac, turn on AirPlay Mirroring and connect it to the Apple TV, so audio and video will stream from the Apple TV.
    2. Turn off the sound of the TV where you have connected the Apple TV.
    3. Then, make sure that you have turned on the AirPlay speakers. Then, open System Preferences > Sound > Output, and choose the external speakers, so sound will stream from these external speakers.
    This should work correctly

  • Macbook Air Mid-2013 crashes (kernel panic) when I stream videos online, why?

    Hi!
I have an MBA mid-2013, and I had it since September 2013, running the Haswell processor as well. I never had any problems or crashes, even after upgrading to OS X Mavericks 10.9.4. Until recently (few days ago), I started streaming videos online on a website called www.crunchyroll.com in HD mode (1080p). I could get up to 4 kernel panics within a span of a few minutes. Once the mac reboots, it goes into a kernel panic almost right away. I have streamed videos before on Hulu and Netflix and other websites alike without any problems. I was thinking it might be a graphics card problem, so I switched from 1080p to 720p, I immediately got less kernel panics (1 time in 20mins). I do not know if this is relevant though. Also, I did not have any external devices plugged in at the time the kernel panics happened.
I was able to save 2 kernel panic reports, they are slightly different on the "backtrace" part so I do not know which one is more accurate.
Can anyone please check this out for me? I would be really happy if there is any fix available, so that I do not have to take my mac to the apple store.
    Thank you very much!!

    Hi!
I just got 2 kernel panics in a row now, while running MS Excel. I never had any problems running this program until the kernel panics started a few days ago. While I have the MS Excel running, I also had Safari open with 8 tabs of just regular websites (i.e. Facebook, blog, sephora, etc.)
    I copied the latest report:

  • Adobe Flash 11.9 buffers not correct in Stream Videos! PLease Help.

First excuse my not so good English!
I´m From Germany. I have a big Problem with the new Adobe Flash Update since 2 or 4 Weeks, when i whatch stream Videos on the Internet
wherever i used Opera 18 Browser, Firefox Browser and Google Chrome Browser, by every Browser the flash player crashed. When i watch a Stream Video than the buffer pre-buffer the Stream Video, and after 10 oder 20 minutes the buffer jumps to fully charged. And when i jump to the point where the flash player says the Video is buffert then the stream finds no connection to the Stream Video and search and search and search with no ending!!!
I disabled the hardware acceleration in the flash player and the browsers but it doesn´t change everything, then i put the memory for the Stream Portal to unlimited in flash player but It doesnt change everything.
as well I search with Memtest 86 my memorys in the pc but the programm doesnt found a error.
But when i install a older Flash Player Version the Version 11.4.402.465 Does not appear the problem! The Problem is only by the new Version 11.9 and bei the new Beta Version is the Same Problem. How can i eliminate this Problem?
I have Windows 7 , 64 Bit Professional. The Problem is since the new Flash Player update, and a older Version is not the perfect and permanent solution!
    Do you have any Idee?
Thank you!! I hope you answer me!!!

If Flash Player does install, it puts two items into /Library/Internet Plug-Ins and adds a prefPane to System Preferences. Check those. If no go, contact Apple's Support, formerly Apple Express Lane, and let them deal with it, since it's a new machine.

  • Dashboard widget with streaming video breaks after upgrade to Mountain Lion

Hi.  I recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.  Under SL, I had an OS X widget that was a web clipping of a streaming mpeg image being produced by a Linksys/Cisco WVC54GCA web camera.  When I brought up the dashboard, the OS would start streaming the data from the mpeg filename, which looks like "hostname.com/img/video.mjpeg".
After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I noted that the widget never fully loads, indefinitely displaying a "Loading Clip..." mesasge.  After deleting and re-adding, I can still get as far as adding the web clipping to the dashboard at the right dimensions, but there's no content.
Unfortunately the camera unit doesn't provide for the display of HTTP access logs, so I can't see if there's an issue there, but my understanding is that if I can display the image in a Safari browser, it should work just fine in Dashboard too.  (I did make sure that, where needed, the username/password for accessing the video are included in the URL.)
I did sniff the network traffic between my system and the camera host, and show that video traffic starts flowing between the two as soon as the widget is brought up.  So, it's almost like the widget doesn't know when to stop "loading" and start "displaying," perhaps because the HTTP request is never truly "done."
Can anyone speculate if something may have changed in Mountain Lion affecting the ability of web clipping widgets to display streaming video?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi James
I have exactly the same problem with the same "Loading clip" then blank.  I have been trying a lot of stuff to get this working, but haven't had the chance of sniffing the network traffic as you have done.  By reading what you said about the traffic seems to be flowing without the picure being displayed makes me even more puzzled by this.  I never had a streaming video while  I were using Snow Leopard, but I had a still-image, as I also do now in Mountain Lion.  I recently began to research for a way to display the video.cgi MIME image that my camera produces, and I've also concluded that this should be an easy task for the dashboard web clip function; the video does display in safari after all.
I suspect that our cameras uses the same built in webserver solution written by a "Steven Wu".  Cheap webcameras frequently uses his script with MJPEG (stream of JPEG pictures) to avoid the expensive licenses of using other video codecs.
I read this a bit down at this site: http://channel9.msdn.com/coding4fun/articles/Everyone-Loves-Babies-Webcams-and-M otion-Detection
Have you come any closer in your research?
I have started to think that maybe I have to write a dashboard widget on my own to accomplish this.

  • Problem viewing streaming video in some wifi networks, but not others

When I am at work (university), I can not view YouTube videos or video streaming from news sites such as cnn mobile on my ipod touch 2g.
    <m.cnn.com/videos.jsp?ckey-cnn)06#__1_>
When I called Apple support, they had me reset-restore. I still had the problem. I went to the Apple store Genius bar and the problem no longer existed, the videaos downloaded and played from both sites!
But at my diner and at work, I get the message, "This movie could not be played" in a popup box with an OK button. The same message appears if I use the YouTube application. I click on any video, and the same popup appears. In Cnn the popup is preceded by a shaded capital Q that looks like the blue Quicktime Q; in Youtube the pupup is preceded by a YouTube icon in gray with the "Tube" surrounded by the rounded rectangle, their icoon...
At the Apple store the popup never appeared, and the videos downloaded and played.
I have no trouble playing movies I have downloaded from iTunes.
I did not have this problem when I initially got my iPod Touch, and I think it appeared after one of the last two system upgrades, but I am not sure.
I am curious that it the problem happens at two places, my diner and at work.
The speed of my wireless work network, as judged by the ipod app speed test is 9915 kbps download and 6971 kbps upload, so plenty fast.
The first time I noticed this issue was with the application "At Bat Lite" which also won't play video highlights at work.
I do not have WiFi at home
Any thoughts about what would cause this lack of functionality apparantly only at some networks but not others?
Oh, one more piece of data: at work a Macbook will play YouTube both on ethernet and using wifi...
Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions,
    Paul

It seems I have two networks available at work, one is behind our firewall, and I login to it. This is the network that I can't view streaming video. There is also a "Guest" network that I don't need to login to. This one works with the YouTube and the news site videos.
Thus, I conclude there is a setting that WiFi network administrators can invoke that specifically can block streaming video on some protocols (whatever the ipod touch uses) and not others (whatever the Macbook uses). But the same router hardware supplying the Guest network does not block these protocols. Presumably this has to do with security on one side of the firewall(?)
Anyway, apparently outside of the WiFi controls available in the ipod touch settings.
    Weird...
    Paul
