Struts RequestProcessor or Action subclass?

Hello there,
I just started to develop a project 10 days ago, and although I have read a struts-related book and some articles I want to make sure about some best practices while using this framework.
I have read that it is recommended to extend RequestProcessor in cases when a "user must be logged" in in order to access a protected resource, say for instance, do a post in a forum. But what about if some resources are protected and other resources are not(a user profile could be a protected page), but site news could be public for any visitor.
Is it better to extend RequestProcessor or develop an ActionBase class, then extend this one to provide AccessRestrictionClass, and any page that requires a user to be logged could extend the lastone, and any public page could extend BaseAction?
or is there another way?
Any comments will be apreciated.
Regards,
OO

The method in requestProcessor to override would be:
protected boolean processRoles(HttpServletRequest request,
                                   HttpServletResponse response,
                                   ActionMapping mapping)http://struts.apache.org/api/org/apache/struts/action/RequestProcessor.html#processRoles(javax.servlet.http.HttpServletRequest, javax.servlet.http.HttpServletResponse, org.apache.struts.action.ActionMapping)
This method is intended to check permissions for the user. You can override it with your own version of the check if you so wish.
You can mark up your action mappings in struts-config.xml to specify that certain actionMappings are only available to certain roles. This is the default behaviour, and wouldn't need any overriding to use
The whole thing depends on how you are implementing the login/security.
Are you using the servlet container login/security schema (users/roles) or a custom one?

    Double post:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=631345&messageID=3643015#3643015

  • UnavailableException for Struts RequestProcessor

    I posted a thread several months back with an issue deploying a 10.1.2 adf application to a 9.0.4.0.1 server and never had it resolved.
    When I look in the log file, I see a message that the Struts RequestProcessor is unavailable. The message looks like this:
    Jul 27, 2005 6:50:43 PM org.apache.struts.action.ActionServlet
    SEVERE: javax.servlet.UnavailableException: Cannot initialize RequestProcessor org.apache.struts.action.ActionServlet
    ClassNotFoundException
    I'm assuming this is happening on startup of the application when it reads the web.xml file and is attempting to load the actionservlet. The struts.jar file is in the WEB-INF/lib path.
    We tried moving it around, then examined an application.log file and it says it cannot be found in <long path here>web-inf/classes/org/apache/struts/action/ActionServlet.class, nor in <long path here>/WEB-INF/lib/, in a classpath defined in orion-web.xml nor in a global application path.
    We tried putting it in the oc4j folder for this app in the applib folder, and tried adding an entry in the orion-web.xml file <classpath path="path to jars"/>
    but that did not seem to work either.
    The application runs as slow as molasses in January, maybe slower on 9.0.4.0.1, but runs fine in 10.1.2. WE thought this might have something to do with it, but I have no idea how to resolve it at this point. We cannot move to 10.1.2 as 10 other apps run on this server and we're not planning any migration at this point.
    Please, please share your thoughts, talents, advice on this!!

    I found the error here from home in another thread:
    Servlet error: Error instantiating servlet 'action' (servlet class not found, make sure it exists at C:\oc4j\j2ee\home\applications\myappname/WEB-INF/classes/org/apache/struts/action/ActionServlet.class, in a jar in C:\oc4j\j2ee\home\applications\myappname/WEB-INF/lib/, in an orion-web.xml specified classpath or global server classpath)

  • Struts cannot locate action servlet

    Although not new to java servlets, this is my struts application.I have run into a problem in that I get a 404 error saying servlet action is not available. I have all the struts jars in my WEB-INF/lib directory and also in the $tomcathome/common/lib directory. I was wondering what I am missing here?
    My web.xml has the servlet and servlet-mapping entries as follows:
    <servlet>

    <servlet-class>org.apache.struts.action.ActionServlet</servlet-class>

    </servlet>
    <servlet-mapping>
    <servlet-name>action</servlet-name>
    <url-pattern>*.do</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>
    my html form looks like this:

    </head>

    Thanks for all your help but I am really starting to hate struts, there seems to be just too many things to configure.

  • JDev10G:  Struts Diagramming and Action calls in JavaScript

    I've noticed that a Struts diagram does not reflect actions that are called from within JavaScript methods. Is this something that will be included in JDeveloper 10G 9.0.5 production?

    We are not currently going into the code (java or java script) to look for action calls. I will enter an enhancement request for this functionality.
    Thanks,

  • Struts current page action and parent action

    what is the difference if the action for current page and parent page action is the same or not same? when I should use the same action and when I need to use different actions?
    thanks

    For this approach you can use PhaseListener for RESTORE_VIEW phase and in the afterPhase method chech the viewId and navigate to the relevant page.

  • Call struts action from javascript?

    Hi all
    I'm having problem already discussed here quite a lot, but I have idea to solve it different way. And need to know is it possible or I'm doing mission impossible here :(
    I have JSP with 2 drop down lilsts, where the second is populated according to selected value from first - that's basically my problem.
    Is it possible to somehow only call my struts action which will return all needed values using javascript and onchange event handler?
    I dont have any experience with javascript, and I'm trying to avoid it as much as possible at the moment.
    Thanks in advance

    well as far your requirement is concern if at all you are planning to implement AJAX try to use the below link which might be of some help...
    http://www.it-eye.nl/weblog/2005/12/13/ajax-in-struts-implementing-dependend-select-boxes/
    However,I somehow feel there are few loopholes in the author's approach...
    i advice to use XmlHttpRequest.reponseXML property there.
    However, i've mentioned a sample code snippet for you reference.
    XML Response Pattern :
    ======================
    <? xml version="1.1" ?>
    <dropdown>
    <option>
    <val>CUSTOMIZED_VALUE</val>
    <text>CUSTOMIZED_VALUE</text>
    </option>
    </dropdown>Sample.jsp:

    can be used for better purposes instead of devising manual parsing.
    where i've used XmlHttpResponse pattern to be in XML. you may make use of other practices like JSON & so on depending on your requirement..
    and and if you are more instrested in integrating Struts with AJAX using few frameworks & customized tag based support please go though the below link.

    Hope that might help :)

    However the formbean value is unable passing to action after clicking submit button,this problem
    doesn't comeout when i run my code as stand alone application.
    here is my application code:

    It is probably easier to do with with a standard tag than the <html:button> tag, as it means you can nest the
    <input type="button" name="more" value="more" onclick="setID(<bean:write name="bloodbankList" property="id"/>)"/>or maybe like this:
    <bean:define id="bbId" name="bloodbankList" property="id"/>
    <html:button property="More" value="More" style="color: #00007D; text-transform: uppercase; letter-spacing: 2pt; background-color: #6B719C; border: 2 solid #00007D"   onclick="<%= "setID(" + id + ");" %>" />Cheers,

  • Struts action forward is NULL

    Hi,
    I have a Index jsp page. Ihave defined IndexAction as action class for this. I have defined it as <welcome-file> in web.xml.
    Also I have action tab in struts-config file:
    <action path="/index" type="com.cec.cll.webclient.logical.clr.actionclass.IndexAction" scope="request" validate="false">
    < forward name="index" path="/index.jsp"/> </action>
    So when I open my application and this jsp page, it goes to action class and fetch the results from database but when action class return the forward, its coming NULL.
    forward = mapping.findForward("index");
    I could not find why it is not getting mapping for index . Any ideas?

    Action class:
         public ActionForward execute(ActionMapping mapping,
                   ActionForm form,
                   HttpServletRequest request,
                   HttpServletResponse response) throws Exception {
              HttpSession session = request.getSession(true);
              List searchList = null;
              ActionForward forward = null;
              try {
                   searchList = RingUtilizationHelper
                   .getGigERingUtilizationForRing(null);
              logger.info("inside Index Action...ends");
                   // sort the result
                   List orderedUList = sortResult(searchList);
                   session.setAttribute("results", orderedUList);
                   forward = mapping.findForward("index");
              } catch (Exception ex) {
                   logger.debug("execute: exception : ", ex);
              logger.info("inside Index Action...forward :"+forward);
              return forward;
         }

  • How to call struts action manually in onchange property???

    Hello!
    action defined in struts-config.xml:
    <action path="/editLafLm" className="oracle.adf.controller.struts.actions.DataActionMapping" type="oracle.adf.controller.struts.actions.DataForwardAction" name="DataForm" parameter="/editLafLm.jsp">
    <set-property property="modelReference" value="editLafLmUIModel"/>
    <forward name="Submit" path="/viewLaf.do"/>
    </action>
    In my JSP the following form:
    <html:form action="/editLafLm.do" target="laf" onsubmit="self.close();">
    <input type="hidden" name="<c:out value='${bindings.statetokenid}'/>" value="<c:out value='${bindings.statetoken}'/>"/>
    <html:select property="StaId1">
    <html:optionsCollection label="prompt" value="index" property="StaId1.displayData"/>
    </html:select>
    <c:out value="${bindings.editingMode}"/>
    <input name="event_Submit" type="submit" value="    OK    "/>
    </html:form>
    When i click choose an entry from the Select list and then click the Submit Button all works well (the action forward goes to viewLaf.do)
    But i want to use the "onchange" property on the select list:
    <html:select property="StaId1" onchange="submit();">
    This is not the same as pressing the Submit button because here the action editLafLm.do is done in a new window (and then i have to click the submit button)...
    So can i call the action or the action forward manually in the onchange-property so that there is the same behavour as clicking on the submit button???
    Thanks
    Markus

    Markus,
    You can use the click method on the submit button called "event_Submit". The trick is to access it in the elements array of the form.
    So instead of:
    <html:select property="StaId1" onchange="submit();">you will have
    <html:select property="StaId1" onchange="elements[n].click();">where n is the correct index of the 'event_Submit' element in the array of form elements.
    If you need to access the form by name you can always count the form name to be DataForm. So from the document it will be:
    document.forms.DataForm.elements[8].click()Charles.

  • Struts Download action portlet:UnsupportedEncodingException

    Hi,
    I'm developing a struts application inside Oracle Portal, when i click on a
    action link i need to download a file.
    <pdk-struts-html:link action="/fileDownload2Action?file=myfile.txt">Click Here to See the PDF</pdk-struts-html:link>
    i've tried to use org.apache.struts.actions.DownloadAction as follows:
    public class MyExampleFileDownload extends DownloadAction{

    ActionForm form,
    HttpServletRequest request,
    HttpServletResponse response)
    throws Exception {

    String fileName = mapping.getParameter();
    // Set the content disposition
    response.setHeader("Content-disposition",
    "attachment; filename=" + fileName);
    // Download a "pdf" file - gets the file name from the
    // Action Mapping's parameter
    String contentType = "application/pdf";
    File file = new File(fileName);
    return new FileStreamInfo(contentType, file);

    Could you suggest me any alternative solution?
    Regards,

    Hi,
    I have done everything as mentioned by various web sites to develop a pdk-struts form, my java code compiles, the jsps compiles everything compiles correctly, and the portal shows up.
    I also put a HTML form in it.
    When a I deploy I can see and work with the HTML form but the portal is not recogniziing the pdk-struts tags, though I made the pdk-struts-html.tld part of the WEB-INF/ yet it wont show up the pdk-struts form.
    Any help regarding this will be highly appreciated.

  • 500 Internal Server Error when I add struts portlet in the portal

    I'm using jDeveloper 10g and have created a sample struts app which is working fine when using the regular struts-html.tld tags and struts-bean.tld tags .I'd like to get it working using the pdk-struts-html.tld taglib though so that I can deploy it as a portlet.
    When I run the jsp page as follow:
    <%@ taglib uri="/WEB-INF/pdk-struts-html.tld" prefix="pdk-struts-html"%>
    <%@ taglib uri="/WEB-INF/struts-bean.tld" prefix="bean"%>
    <%@ page contentType="text/html;charset=GBK"%>

    <pdk-struts-html:submit />

  • Struts controller classes and ADF in JDeveloper 10.1.3 EA

    I've noticed that ADF Struts has changed quite a bit from JDev 10.1.2. In the previous version of ADF Struts, the default data action class was oracle.adf.controller.struts.actions.DataForwardAction. In version 2 of ADF Struts, the default action class is oracle.adf.controller.v2.lifecycle.PageController. When overiding a lifecycle method in the DataForwardAction class, the method was always passed a DataActionContext object. The DataActionContext class had a method called getHttpServletRequest() so I could get a handle on the request object. On the other hand, the PageController lifecycle methods use the LifecycleContext object and I have yet to find a way to get access to the request object. Does anyone know of a way to get a handle on the Http request object? I've looked at the javadocs for the new Struts action classes but have found nothing that would help.
    I also noticed that the DataForwardAction class (package = oracle.adf.controller.v2.struts.actions) has been changed in version 2 of ADF Struts and only a few methods remain. So I would assume that this class will no longer be used the same way it was in the past. Is this a safe assumption?

    The task of customizing the PageLifecycle or handling events are now delegated to the PageController. These tasks were previously done in a subclass of the DataForwardAction. The DataForwardAction is now only responsible of bootstrapping the PageLifecycle.
    </br></br>
    In 10.1.2, reference to the model BindingContainer was done using a <set-property> for each DataAction. This is now done in the DataBindings.cpx file using a mapping between the path and the BindingContainer. This new mechanism is identical for Struts or Faces. Same with the PageController which is in 10.1.3 the common place to extend the behavior of the PageLifecycle or a ControlBinding for Struts and Faces.

  • Using struts-faces : can't find "forward".

    using struts-faces : can't find "forward".
    I download the struts-faces lib and want to make a integration with struts && JSF.
    The action's one method is executed, but after that, it can't find the forward page.
    The console display:
    // Here is the initLogon() method of LogonAction, just print 2 message
    [LogonAction] DEBUG: initLogon start
    [LogonAction] DEBUG: initLogon end
    // Then output these:
    [FacesRequestProcessor] DEBUG: Standard action perform returned /index.faces forward path
    [FacesRequestProcessor] DEBUG: Performing standard forward config handling
    [RequestProcessor] DEBUG: processForwardConfig(ForwardConfig[name=logon_page,path=/index.faces,redirect=false,contextRelative=false])

                    <url-pattern>*.faces</url-pattern>
             </servlet-mapping>           In faces-config.xml, I left it empty:
         <faces-config>
         </faces-config>           The index.jsp is very simple:
         it just include a string "This is index.jsp", no any tag.
    Please give me some advice, thanks !

    Need Help!
    I use weblogic8.1 and
    the entry is http://localhost:7001/interactive/LogonAction.do?method=initLogon
    I don't know why it execute the initLogon() method but can't return to the page.
