Stuck: Application Client launching in 9.0.3 and 1.0.2.2.1

Ok, I have read the decent amount of material but I still can't get my test client to launch in the containers.
In 1.0.2.2.1 I am unsure what my client name should be. Here is my commmand
java -jar applicationlauncher.jar ormi://localhost:23841/appName/clientAppName oc4jadminuser adminUserPassword
Now, I know that app name is the name of the deployed application. But where do I define/find the client app name. Everything, i have read says I need to use that command line. But nothing tells me what the client app name is. my clientApp is deployed in the application as triggertest.jar. So does that mean my client app name in the container is triggertest? When I try to use that as the clientAppName I get:
No Manifest found even though I do have a mainfest file. Am I missing something here?
Further, I also have a 9.0.3 install of OC4J. When I try to run the application there I get an even more confusing error stating:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/evermind/client/applicationlauncher/ApplicationLauncher
This is so frustrating. I would like to make use of the JNDI features and such in the application but I can't even make this work.

Hi Matt,
I've been having trouble connecting to these forums in the last few days.
It's been a while since I used "applicationlauncher.jar", and I'm not at work right now (so I can't verify), but the manifest file format needs to be exact, otherwise the java application doesn't work (and you really don't understand why). I know that there is an issue with a trailing new line in the manifest file -- but I don't remember if you have to include it or not. Have you looked at the JDK documentation regarding the manifest? There is also some good information on the "Java Tutorial" (from SUN).
Also, if I remember correctly, OC4J version 1.0.2.2 supports JDK 1.2, but you seem to be using JDK 1.3 -- this may be causing problems?
As you noted (and I have mentioned in previous posts to the forums), "applicationlauncher.jar" disappeared in version 9.0.2.0.0 (of OC4J) and "made a comeback" in version 9.0.3 (yet Oracle discourages its use -- I wonder why).
So perhaps you should try using 9.0.3 and "applicationlauncher.jar" with JDK 1.3? This is just a suggestion -- I have only used "applicationlauncher.jar" with OC4J 1.0.2.2 and JDK 1.2.2 (on SUN [sparc] with Solaris 7)
Hope this helps you.
Good Luck,
Avi.

  • Application Client 2nd trial

    We have some EJB's running in an OC4J, which are acessed by a Swing client.
    Everything works fine so far.
    Now we want to deploy this client as an APPLICATION-CLIENT to the OC4J and launch it on the client-machine in a CLIENT-CONTAINER.
    The JDeveloper doc says:
    "Oracle9iAS provides full support for J2EE Client applications....
    To know, what the subject is have a look here:
    http://java.sun.com/j2ee/j2ee-1_3-fr-spec.pdf Chapter 9
    http://www.orionserver.com/docs/client-deployment.html
    http://www-3.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/doc/v40/ae/infocenter/was/06060007.html
    How is this done for our product?
    How is it supported by JDeveloper ?
    How can i launch my client in an (Oracle) application-client-container against my EJB's hosted by an OC4J ?

    I understand that this thread is quite old, but I'd like to ask if this has ever been answered adequately and, if so, what the answer was?
    As I understand this, Mr. Miller is correct with everything he's said, however I see nothing more than passive mention of the Application Client Container in the Oracle documentation (and it is now May 2006).
    So, is this finally an available feature of the Oracle OC4J container, or is it in the documentation but not actually in the server product?
    If it does exist, I would really be interested in an example.

    HI Avi
    It is stand-alone java class that is outside of OC4J Package as JAR file. i Add application application-client.xml and orion-application-client.xml in to META-INF and add resource-ref element to XMLs as well. but it does not work. i am using oracle thin dirver in application server side.
    relavent code is ..
    DataSource ds = null;
    Connection db;
    try {
    Context initCtx = getInitialContext();
    ds = (DataSource) initCtx.lookup(name);

  • Application Client Enity Manager cannot find Persistence Unit with JWS

    I have an Enterprise Application Project in Netbeans 6.7.1.
    The enterprise application client module has the business code and the
    persistence unit (TopLink) defined in the app-client.jar. I can run this
    application clinet from NB without a problem. I can also run it with JWS
    if I remove the EnityManager.
    I'm using JPA (EnityManager) in a Java SE environment.
    When I try and run the app-client from Java Web Start I get an error
    that the EnityManager cannot find the PU. The persistence unit is packaged in the app.ear->app-client.jar->META-INF->persistence.xml.
    There's not a wealth of information, that I could find on the net, but this
    seems to be correct.
    The error I get is:
    INFO: ACC009: Load Application Class: [jws.Main]
    hello world! From JWS
    Dec 3, 2009 11:44:21 AM com.sun.enterprise.appclient.MainWithModuleSupport <init>

    oracle.toplink.essentials.PersistenceProvider
    oracle.toplink.essentials.ejb.cmp3.EntityManagerFactoryProvider
    Returned null to createEntityManagerFactory.
    Any ideas on what I need to do to properly package the PU for an Enterprise Application Client ??
    Thanks,
    David

    I solved this problem.
    When we call resources from EAR application, WebLogic adds "Cache-Control=private, no-cache, no-store, s-maxage=0, must-revalidate" to all responses header.
    It was the reason of error occurence.
    I used filter from http://flavio.tordini.org/http-headers-filter to remove Cache-Control from header when calling jar resources.
    After that, applicatiom started to work again.

  • EJB Application Client clarification

    Hi EJB Guru,
    I would like some clarification on accessing Remote/Local Session Bean using an Application Client. In other word,
    there appears to be more than one approach to the same Session bean. Let's start by declaring the Converter EJB:
    package converter.ejb;
    import java.math.BigDecimal;
    import javax.ejb.Remote;
    @Remote
    public interface Converter {
        public BigDecimal dollarToYen(BigDecimal dollars);
        public BigDecimal yenToEuro(BigDecimal yen);
    package converter.ejb;
    import java.math.BigDecimal;
    import javax.ejb.Stateless;
    @Stateless
    public class ConverterBean implements converter.ejb.Converter {
        private BigDecimal euroRate = new BigDecimal("0.0070");
        private BigDecimal yenRate = new BigDecimal("112.58");
        public BigDecimal dollarToYen(BigDecimal dollars) {
            BigDecimal result = dollars.multiply(yenRate);
            return result.setScale(2, BigDecimal.ROUND_UP);
        public BigDecimal yenToEuro(BigDecimal yen) {
            BigDecimal result = yen.multiply(euroRate);
            return result.setScale(2, BigDecimal.ROUND_UP);
    }I have two method to accessing this bean.
    ( i ) Lookup JNDI using the following set of code:
    package converter.client;
    import converter.ejb.Converter;
    import java.math.BigDecimal;
    import javax.ejb.EJB;
    import javax.naming.InitialContext;
    import javax.naming.Context;
    import javax.naming.NamingException;
    public class ConverterClient {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            try {
                InitialContext ctx = new InitialContext();
                ConverterRemote jndiconverter = (ConverterRemote) ctx.lookup("converter.ejb.ConverterRemote");
                BigDecimal param = new BigDecimal("100.00");
                BigDecimal yenAmount = jndiconverter.dollarToYen(param);
                System.out.println("$" + param + " is " + yenAmount + " Yen.");
                BigDecimal euroAmount = jndiconverter.yenToEuro(yenAmount);
                System.out.println(yenAmount + " Yen is " + euroAmount + " Euro.");
                System.exit(0);
            } catch (javax.naming.NamingException ne) {
                System.err.println("Caught an unexpected exception!");
                ex.printStackTrace();
    }( ii ) Application Client lookup?
    package converter.client;
    import converter.ejb.Converter;
    import java.math.BigDecimal;
    import javax.ejb.EJB;
    public class ConverterClient {
        @EJB
        private static Converter converter;
        /** Creates a new instance of Client */
        public ConverterClient(String[] args) {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            ConverterClient client = new ConverterClient(args);
            client.doConversion();
        public void doConversion() {
            try {
                BigDecimal param = new BigDecimal("100.00");
                BigDecimal yenAmount = converter.dollarToYen(param);
                System.out.println("$" + param + " is " + yenAmount + " Yen.");
                BigDecimal euroAmount = converter.yenToEuro(yenAmount);
                System.out.println(yenAmount + " Yen is " + euroAmount + " Euro.");
                System.exit(0);
            } catch (Exception ex) {
                System.err.println("Caught an unexpected exception!");
                ex.printStackTrace();
    }It is the first time I come a cross method ( ii ) and could not get it to work properly. The error message

    ( a ) Why does the error occur?
    ( b ) what is the architecture difference in accessing the same bean? Does JNDI lookup allows one to access EJB from remote host as opposed the method ( ii ) which is only restricted to local access on the same JVM/Container?
    ( c ) What are the pros & cons between the two?
    I am using Application Client to lookup these Session Beans on Netbeans 5.5, SJSAS 9.0, SDK 1.5.0_11 on Windows XP platform.
    Any guideance/advice would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks alot,
    Henry

    Hi, may be you can help me with a similar problem that I have, I transcript the post in the netbeans forum, I really hope that you or someone can help me with this. Thanks in advance!
    I hope that somebody can help me solving this issue.
    Environment:
    NetBeans 6.0 beta1 + glassfish b58g fresh installed
    Windows XP
    Make a new enterprise application with application client. Run the empty Main and it runs ok.
    Now create a Stateless Session Bean with hello method.
    In the Application Client Main insert a reference to the EJB using the wizard. (@EJB etc...)
    invoke the hello method from the main().
    right click on libraries from application client and add the application-ejb project
    Deploy and it deploys ok, but when you run it throws an exception:
    client:
    java.lang.NullPointerException
    server:
    Error in annotation processing: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Lorg/arautos/revista/sacrae/server/business/SACRAEFacadeRemote;
    java.io.FileNotFoundException: C:\opt\glassfish-v2-b58g\domains\domain1\applications\j2ee-modules\SACRAE-app-client\SACRAE-ejb.jar (El sistema no puede hallar el archivo especificado)
    Remember we added the project to the appclient libraries. If I place the missing file in the applications directory of glassfish it wont work, because when you run it, deploying on the server will erase it again. But, if you copy the jar file in the directory and open it with 7zip or any other application that can keep the file open, when you run it again it will work (because the server is not able to delete the file).
    Although this is a workaround, there should be something I am doing wrong to cause this behavior, now when I try to use Java Web Start to execute the client it fails (surprisingly) with this exception:
    java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException
    Caused by: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/arautos/revista/sacrae/server/business/SACRAEFacadeRemote
    at org.arautos.revista.sacrae.client.desktop.Main.main(Main.java:30)
    ... 21 more
    And I don't know where in the domain1 directory place the jar, worse, I don't know how to solve the issue with the ejb-jar in the first place, does anybody has an idea, link, same problem? I have googled, netbeans-ed and java.net-ed a lot but didn't find anything :(
    Thanks in advance for any help.
    Best Regards.

    Hi,
    I would like to suggest you run System File Checker with command: sfc /scannow to scan and repair the system files.
    If it does not work, please also test the issue in Clean Boot.
    Clean Boot
    ================
    Let’s disable all startup items and third party services when booting. This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading
    program or service. Please perform the following steps:
    1. Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.
    Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window.
    2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
    3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".
    Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System
    Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK.
    What’s the result in Clean Boot?

    }How to relinguish transaction on EmployeeSessionBean so that all transaction could take place in applicationClient side only?
    I am trying to apply examples in Pro JPA 2 to a Java EE 6 ManyToMany application.
    Your assistance would be much appreciated.

    Hi r035198x,
    Thank you for some solid advice and would rather JPA take care of all the special cases such as keeping the records unique.
    Below are the changes made as suggested in ( 1 ), ( 2 ), ( 3 ):
    @Entity
    @IdClass(EmployeePK.class)
    @Table(name="EMPLOYEE", catalog="EmployeeDB", schema="")
    public class Employee implements Serializable {
        @Id
        @Column(name="FIRSTNAME")
        private String firstName;
        @Id
        @Column(name="SURNAME")
        private String surName;
        @Id
        @Column(name="DOB")
        @Temporal(TemporalType.DATE)
        private Date dob;
        @ManyToMany(cascade={CascadeType.PERSIST, CascadeType.MERGE, CascadeType.REFRESH}, fetch=FetchType.EAGER)
        @JoinTable(name="EMPLOYEE_PROJECT", catalog="EmployeeDB", schema="",
               joinColumns={@JoinColumn(name="FIRSTNAME_ID", referencedColumnName="FIRSTNAME"),
                            @JoinColumn(name="SURNAME_ID", referencedColumnName="SURNAME"),
                            @JoinColumn(name="DOB", referencedColumnName="DOB")},
               inverseJoinColumns={@JoinColumn(name="PROJECT_ID")})
            private Set<Project> projects = new HashSet<Project>();
    @Entity
    @Table(name="PROJECT", catalog="EmployeeDB", schema="")
    public class Project implements Serializable {
        @Id
        @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.IDENTITY)
        @Column(name="ID")
        private int id;
        @ManyToMany(mappedBy="projects", cascade={CascadeType.PERSIST, CascadeType.MERGE, CascadeType.REFRESH}, fetch=FetchType.EAGER)

               joinColumns={@JoinColumn(name="PROJECT_ID", referencedColumnName="PROJECT_ID")},
               inverseJoinColumns={@JoinColumn(name="FIRSTNAME_ID", referencedColumnName="FIRSTNAME"),
                            @JoinColumn(name="SURNAME_ID", referencedColumnName="SURNAME"),
                            @JoinColumn(name="DOB_ID", referencedColumnName="DOB")})
        private Set<Employee> employees = new HashSet<Employee>();

        public void create(Employee employee)
            manager.persist(employee);
    public class applicationClient {
        @EJB
        private static EmployeeService bean;
        public static void main(String[] args) {
        Employee employee = new Employee()
        bean.create(employee);   // line 209
    } I have diverged slightly from using simple primary key (EMPLOYEE_ID) to composite key class (FIRSTNAME, SURNAME, DOB) to resemble the actual application.
    Also gone back to using non - XADatasources since I am depending on JTA to do all the hardwork on the server side.
    Unfortunately, we have hit a snag once again with the following exception still:

  • Distributing a Java EE Application Client (Thin Client)

    Hi,
    I'm following the instructions in Section 4 Developing a Java EE Application Client (Thin Client) in Oracle® Fusion Middleware Programming Stand-alone Clients for Oracle WebLogic Server, 11g Release 1 (10.3.1), Part Number E13717-01.
    I packaged the application client in an ear. If I set up my environment using C:\bea10\wlserver_10.3\server\bin\setWLSEnv.cmd. I can extract the application client using a command line like:
    java weblogic.ClientDeployer myear.ear myclient
    I can execute the client using a command line like:
    java weblogic.j2eeclient.Main myclient.jar t3://localhost:7003
    However, I would like to run the application client on a client machine (i.e., a machine without WebLogic installed). I thought I could use one of the wl*client.jar files such wlclient.jar, wlfullclient.jar, etc. I started with wlfullclient.jar.
    If I try to extract the application client with a command line like
    java -classpath wlfullclient.jar weblogic.ClientDeployer myear.ear myclient
    I get the following error:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/bea/xml/XmlException

    Next I tried using the jar previously extracted on the server and tried to run it using:
    java -classpath wlfullclient.jar weblogic.j2eeclient.Main myclient.jar t3://localhost:7003
    I get the following error:

    Is it possible to extract and execute an application client on a machine without WebLogic server? If so, what jars do I need? If not, why not?
    I'm testing using WebLogic 10.3.1 on a Windows XP SP2 machine using JDK 1.6.0_05.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Application Client

    The J2EE specification requires support for a client container that runs standalone Java applications (known as J2EE application clients) and provides J2EE services to the applications. J2EE services include naming, security, and resource connections.
    The only information i could find about this topic was, how to deploy a J2EE Client module in JDeveloper.
    But how are J2EE application clients of OC4J/ORACLE IAS are launched.
    And how do they use the J2EE services(security...JAAS) mentioned above.

    The subject here is the CLIENT Container and NOT the J2EE Container.
    The tutorials you mentioned only contain Web clients.
    The testing client is a simple RMI/IIOP Client.
    The JDeveloper doc says:
    "Oracle9iAS provides full support for J2EE Client applications. For more information, refer to "Chapter 9, Application Clients in the J2EE Platform Specification".
    So have a look here, to know, what we are talking about:
    http://java.sun.com/j2ee/j2ee-1_3-fr-spec.pdf Chapter 9
    The others do it this way:
    http://www-3.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/doc/v40/ae/infocenter/was/06060007.html
    How is this done for our product?
    How can i launch my client in an (Oracle) application-client-container against my EJB's hosted by an OC4J ?

  • Application Client to call JSP...

    Hi all,
    I am using Websphere to write EJB codes and JSP pages and print report based on data retrieved from database. Every morning, i need to manually print sales reports and copied it to a network folder. I found it very tedious. I planned to write an application client to automate the task at midnite. I managed to call the session bean using the client but how can I call the jsp page to print the report? Is it possible? Can I save the jsp page to network folder automatically? Thank you for your help.

  • How do I tell which hard drive an application is launching from?

    Hello.  I am first time user of the support communities here.  I have searched the forums prior to posting, but haven't been able to find an answer.
    I have a 2011 model Mac Mini (purchased 12/2011) running OSX Lion.  A couple weeks ago, I started getting a pop-up error telling me that I was running out of startup disk space.  I did a check through "about this Mac"  / disc utility and found that I was indeed very low on space on my stock 500GB HDD.  This machine see light use, but serves as primary storage (wirelessly backed-up through Time Machine to a NAS (1TB WD MyBook World Edition) attached to my AirPort Extreme, for photos (iPhoto) and music and digital copies of movies associated to iTunes, along with back-ups (through iTunes) for 4 iPhones and an iPad for our family.
    Anyway, I searched online and found that since this model had eliminated the optical drive, I could add a second hard drive.  For this application, I valued space over blazing performance, so I opted for a Seagate 1TB SSHD (hybrid drive) to add to my existing 500GB drive.  I was able to install the second drive just fine following these instructions and the following YouTube video as a guide.  I erased / initialized the second drive through disk utility so it was mounted / usable.  I needed to set the drive with available space as my startup disk, so I then installed OSX Lion (recovery USB key) on the second drive (volume "untitled") and followed the migration steps to copy all of my settings, applications, documents, etc from the stock drive (volume Macintosh HD) to the new one.  That all went fine.
    I seem to have the same data on both drives according to the usage shown on About this Mac > Storage.  The drives are in OSX Extended (Journaled) mode.  My question is that I want to free up appx 498GB of space, if possible, by removing the duplicate data from the original 500GB stock (no longer "startup" drive).  Is there a downside to doing that?  Is there a way to determine which drive my applications are launching from to make sure I don't have applications reading from one drive and writing to the other, or something.  When I clicked "about" in a couple of sample applications to check, I can't tell... It starts the location context with /users/Matt.........iTunes.app  for example.   I can't tell which drive it's actually launching from  / accessing right now when I open it.
    Appreciate any insight.
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Some applications absolutely must be in the main Applications folder.  Others can be put pretty much anywhere but they will use preferences stored in the user's directory on whatever drive that is, and use Application Support on the boot drive.  I think it would be wise to keep applications on the main drive and store only data on your other drive.  However, I do occasionally end up with applications on two drives, or multiple copies of a few applications so I can process two files at the same time.  Some applications tolerate being renamed and if you need/want two copies then you can perhaps label them as to the drive on which they are located.
