"stuck" cpu processor speed on different power schemes

Hi, I just purchased an X230 with an Intel Core i5 3230m.  I wanted to create an ultra low power scheme with minimum processor speed but found that the processor speed would not change from the maximum 2.6 Ghz.  I tried a few different power schemes and they showed the same speed of a 2.6 Ghz.  That isn't right --- the low power option should have a processor speed of 1 - 1.5 Ghz.  For some reason, I can't reduce the processor speed.  I'm stumped! 
I'd appreciate any thoughts members may have on this.   I must be missing something fairly basic here.  But I tried changing it in Lenovo Power Manager and Win 7 Power Options.

even on the maximum performance scheme under windows, the cpu should throttle.  But the way Id tackle this issue: (1) check your bios and make sure you have all the power management features turned to auto or at least not at 100% all the time (its something along these lines).  (2)  Check your windows power scheme, configure the maximum battery one and do a min/max cpu speed of 5% and cpu cooling to passive.  This should force the CPU to the lowest state if (1) is met.

    well I do understand what you mean but then I would like to have a software to control the clock speed like I control my fan speed although the default setting does that automatically. I don't really want to use it without a battery because apple does not recommend that also.

  • Reducing Processor speed for Power problems

    I have already replaced the power supply in my G5 20"iMac under Apples self-install program. That problem was resolved (no power), but now the computer has been unexpectedly shutting off and has frequent high fan noise . I reduced the processor speed and it has been usable. I plan to take it to an Apple Store because my 1yr. waranty is almost up, however, my serial # falls in the Repair Extension program for Video and Power issues.
    I am hoping they will diagnose on the spot and order a new logic board or whatever. I do not want to leave the computer at the store while a part is ordered as it is usable.
    Does anyone know what I can expect at the Store?
    And, in general, can anyone tell me what happens when the computer is used with reduced Processor speed.I have not really noticed a difference, but I think I am just masking the problem.

    I've also ordered from OWC in the States before without any problems. With the good exchange rate you may save some money, although be aware I've always ended up paying some form of import tax, so the savings aren't as great as you may expect.

    They seem to be highly recommended, compatible with OS 9.2 and OS X and don't require any third party firmware patches or kernel extensions etc. If you click the More Info button for the 1.467-1.5GHz upgrade, you'll see some benchmarks comparing it to the stock 400MHz processor.
    Another option would be to look for an original Apple dual 450MHz or 500MHz processor card on eBay that's been pulled from a Gigabit Ethernet model. Assuming your computer's compatible with dual processors (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/13551), it would offer a modest speed boost.

    Hey guys,
    i was just wondering if CPU speed really matter when you play games. I am only going to play fifa, which isn't as graphic intense as other PC games.
    Anyways, last year's MacBook Air had 1.7ghz as its processor, and i heard that it ran fifa 13 just fine.
    However, this year's processor is only 1.3ghz, which is a lot lower than what i expected....however, according to real tests, the actual laptop speed increased about 5%. It was very surprising to me, but i guess it was cuz of the new gpu.
    So, my question is, does CPU clock speed really affect gaming quality? Or if the actual speed increased 5%, does it not matter?

    You need to take into account the # cores when considering processing power. Computers run many processes at once. A duel core processor clocked at 1.7 GHz is not necessarily better than a quad core processor clocked at 1.3 GHz. The best analogy is driving. A two lane road with a the speed limit of 170 MPH. A four lane road with a speed limit of 130 MPH. When there is no traffic, you will arrive at your destination faster taking the first route. But when there is a bunch of traffic, you will be stuck in a bumper to bumper jam. Even though the speed limit is higher on the two lane road, you will arrive at your destination faster taking the four lane road. There are more lanes available to maintain the flow of traffic. 
    There is always traffic. Your computer runs many processes in the background, and individual games run multiple processes at once. Processing power is a combination of both the speed limit and the number of lanes.
    And yes, the GPU should always be taken into account. It is a Graphics Processing Unit. Rendering graphics on your screen correctly is very important in regards to gaming. A discrete GPU is preferable to an a single integrated one, always, for gaming.

  • CPU fan speed = overheating. (Fixed)

    Well, where to start.
    For the past week I've been having problems with my system, turned out it was overheating because the CPU fan speed was very low, once I opened the Core Cell application it speeded up the fan and all is well (but I don't like having to run a bunch of applications to keep the system running the way it should be without. them and these applications don't start in safe mode.) I'm currently using BIOS version 3.30 and read "BIOS reported incorrect CPU temperature." but it does report the correct temperature, it is overheating because of the fan speed.
    Does anyone know if updating to the current/latest version (3.60) will correct this problem with the CPU fan speed (it's only been hapenning after I updated to v3.30)

    That is a job by itself!
    Everybody has different components on their systems.  They buy cheap rams, case with insuficient power supply, lousy cooling, etc. and they are short on money like myself.  How can I help them??  My general advise is buy top of the line components or buy a Dell if they don't want to research before they build a system.  I know its hard to put out that much cash, I actually got my motherboard from a friend FREE!  He had a lot of problems with it.  I always had motherboards by Abit or SuperMicro Dual Processor and in the earlier years I had a Sun Microsystem SPARC 10 running Unix.  I also get them FREE!  They were prototypes before production lots of jumper wires.  When I retired at age 47, five years ago I only work part time now when I need spending money like for Christmas and 10 different hobbies that my wife thinks is to much.  Yes I wrote CHRISTMAS not Holiday.  Grandkids, my wife spoil them all year, but we have to get in the spirit of Christmas she said.  AHH HUMBUG! LOL!  I need a couple of those new 300 GB SATA Maxtor drives with Command Queuing to get rid of my four 20 GB Maxtor and one 40 GB, I also got them free when I did a job for them 8 years ago and they are still working great.  It will reduce my +12V load, increase my storage capacity and my hard disk speed.  I had them on a Promise 66 PCI RAID controller card on my old SuperMicro Dual Processor motherboard.
    If a person has a problem with a MSI 875P NEO-FIS2R and a decent setup, I will definetly give them advise if I can.

  • Amount of RAM useful limited to processor speed?

    I have heard that at a certain point the amount of RAM you throw in your computer won't help past a certain processor speed. If this is true, is there a chart out there that will show these limits?
    Or if anyone has any opinions as far as a:

    Dual 1.8Ghz (G5)
    Dual 800Mhz (G4)

    Without a list of applications, you could be starving your apps, especially if they need to be open and active. If you work on large photoshop files and not smallish, it is impossible almost to have too much (and you would need a PCIe G5 to get 10-12GB RAM).
    Check page-out; number of swap files; whether you are generating swap files.
    just scanning and retouching can eat up 2GB RAM.
    OS X uses free memory to cache windows, disk I/O, and those won't show up looking at Activity Monitor.
    Virtual memory can be 'requested' or 'allocated' but not used, too.
    I saw people with 512-768MB be shocked at what a difference even light use (email, web, writing, etc) it was to upgrade their G5 to 1.5GB RAM. There are also programming changes that go into a G5 that are totally different from G4s.
    But it has nothing to do with cpu, front side bus.
    And no matter what, a nice fast 10K Raptor boot drive always helps

    Hi, everyone,
    I finally have this new core i7 system, to replace my old AMD athlonx2.  I have one question about the CPU fan speed control.
    I remember that in my old system, the cpu fan speed control works out of box, no configuration is needed.
    But when I install arch 64 on this new i7 system, the cpu fan is running at its maximum speed constantly while the CPU temperature is modestly low. I know there is a wiki teaching how to do it.
    However, I am just curious why it doens't work out of box any more? Does CPU fan control work for you guys out of box normally? especially the new Core i7 cpu users?
    Please let me know, really appreciated it.

    First off, it would be useful to know what the sensors-detect script actually reports.
    Okay. How fan control works on Linux: First, navigate to /sys/class/hwmon
    Each of these folders, i.e. hwmon0, stands for a sensors monitor / fan controller on your mainboard that may control one or several fans. Inside hwmonN, there should be a subfolder called device, which contains several interfaces if your BIOS allows software-side fan control. You can read them with cat and write to them with echo.
    Examples:
    pwm1_enable shows if OS-level fan control is enabled (1) or disabled and in BIOS control (0). Changing fan speed won't work if this is disabled. (i.e. cat /sys/class/hwmon0/device/pwm1_enable reports 0 -> disabled; you could enable it with echo 1 > /sys/class/hwmon0/device/pwm1_enable).
    pwm1 allows to change fan speed. The values range from 0 (fan off) to 255 (full speed, 12V).
    fan1_input shows the current RPM if a fan is connected. You can only read from this interface. Its useful to check all of these in the each of the hwmon folders to find out if there is actually a fan connected to the fan controller (they often have more ports than mainboard manufacturers use).
    There might be a fan1_div, this is somehow related to how the kernel reads the RPM, I don't know how it works.
    temp1_input interfaces can appeare too, if some of the chips have temperature sensors located somewhere. I *think* lm_sensors places the core temperatures it reads from CPU (the coretemp-isa-000X thingies) in one of the hwmon-folders too.
    There might be interfaces for different fans in the same hwmon folder, i.e. pwm2_enable, pwm2, fan2_input, etc., all interfaces with the same index belong to the same physical fan connector, and all in the same hwmonN are managed by the same IC on your mainboard.
    Warning: These interfaces, if they work, control the fans directly without any kind of security measure. If you shut some essential fan down, it will stay off until you reboot your CPU shuts down.
    (If you see something likein0_alarm, in0_input, in0_max, etc. it's a voltage monitoring chip.)
    If one of those interfaces can do something, OS-level fan control does work, if none of those folders contain a working pwm interface, fan control seems to be unavailable.
    Sometimes there is an option in the BIOS to enable it, and for some BIOSs software-side fan control only works if dynamic fan control is disabled in the BIOS and fan speed is set to a static value - or vice versa.
    I don't know what you are using to control fan speed, there are many applications that use these interfaces, i.e. GNOME or KDE power managers, so I'm not sure what is happening:
    IF: Windows 7 enables OS-level fan control and sets it the RPM to those you observed and you have nothing that provides fan control in Arch and so fan control stays at BIOS-level, which might also read out a different sensor / the same sensor differently or it might be more conservative in setting fan speeds altogether;
    OR: You have something that provides fan control installed in Arch and it reads out a the wrong value supplied by lm_sensors and thus sets a higher fan speed.
    Anyway, possible solutions I can think of:
    Find out if you have some kind of fan control software and what it does. For example, I use the fancontrol daemon, I can't help you if you use something else.
    The wiki mentions how to assign a fan speed to a certain temperature sensors. You might assign it to a different one. For example, there are no sensor chips on the mainboard of my EEE (no temp1 etc.) so I assigned the fan speed to the temperature reported by the BIOS via ACPI (those are in /sys/class/thermal, also no "device" subfolder on EEEs):
    FCTEMPS=/sys/class/hwmon/hwmon0/pwm1=/sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp
    You could also change the MINTEMP/MAXTEMP values to one higher than those you actually want to compensate for the effect of lm_sensors reporting temperatures that are too high.
    It is currently not possible for a mortal user to change the coretemps lm_sensors reads, see this post, last paragraph.
    There is a configuration file, /etc/sensors3.conf, you can change sensor names and adjust offsets here, but only for the monitoring chips and their sensors that are on the mainboard.

  • New MacBook Air vs previous version- processor speed?

    I was going to exchange my < 2wk old MacBook Air for the newer version.  the new one has better battery life but it looks like smaller processor?  1.3 GHz vs the 1.8 that I have.  How much difference is this?

    500HMz is actually a pretty big difference... especially in this range.  Depending on your use though, it's entirely possible you would never notice.  Besides improved battery life, the new Air also has significantly better graphics performance (about a 40% increase).  What do you typically use your MacBook Air for?  If you use processor intensive applications, you may want to stay with your current model.  If you do things that involve graphics, the newer model might be a better option. 
    Basically... you might have one car that can go 200 miles per hour... and one that can go 150 miles per hour.  But maybe you only ever need to go up to 70 miles per hour.  Basically, they would both meet your needs as you'll never need the full power of either.  That's how you can look at the difference in the processor performance.  Just because one is lower, doesn't mean it will perform differently in your daily tasks.
    I personally would probably go with the newer model (especially since you're still within the 2 week return period).  The boost in graphics performance and the reduced energy use would outweigh the difference in processor speeds.

How can I check what the actual processor speed is and if it was upgraded is it possble it might npt be reflected in the info in "about this mac" ?  thanks

  • Odd problem relating to processor speed

    I'm hoping that there's some simple fix to this, because it's a simple problem in all honesty.
    Usually, when using my iBook I often switch between the "Highest" and "Reduced" processor speed options, depending on what I'm doing, where I am, etc; however, recently a problem has popped up. The speed of the system seems to be "stuck" in Reduced mode, regardless of whether I put it into "Automatic" or "Highest" again. I've checked the temperature, and sure enough - it doesn't even go above 50-55 degrees Celsius, whereas on "Highest" it would happily go up to 70-73 degrees Celsius if I was needing the processing power.
    I'm seeing formatting as an option, but would really rather not if I don't have to... Completely open to suggestions.

    Try resetting the PMU. Do that by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Wait 5 seconds and start the iBook.

    I'm a professional video editor (using Premiere and After Effects) looking to buy a new MacBook Pro and am deciding between two models. The slightly older model has a 2.8GHZ i7 (3rd generation) Quad Core processor with a 1GB SDRAM of NVIDIA GE FORCE GT 650M Graphics Card. Then newer model has a 2.3GHZ i7 (4th generation) Quad Core preocessor with 2GB SDRAM of NVIDIA GE FORCE 750M/Intel Iris Pro Graphics Card.
    Which makes the most difference (processor speed vs. graphics card) with editing with Premiere and After Effects?
    Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    I don't want to rain on your parade, but want you to get a more realistic idea of your performance.
    I chose a macbook pro, 17" of cause. I use it for gaming. Yes a iMac is better for gaming. But, it's nice to be able to move around. Set up a man cave in the lounge 1 week, or in the bedroom, the next. But you fork out a lot more dosh for that luxury. And yes, not as much power as Poikkeus has said.

    this may be kind of a silly question but, I have a KT3 Ultra MS-6380E , and on the specs, it say "Support 600MHz up to 2100+ MHz processor and higher".
    My first question is, how can I tell if my processor is either a standard athlon, rev A, or rev B?
    Second question is, can I use a rev B  Athlon XP on a KT3 Ultra MS-6380E since the processor speeds are around XP2400 to XP2800?

    We pointed out the other day that AMD will have two or (somewhat later) even three types of processors available for each speed bin: Palominos, TBredAs and TBredBs.
    To make your life easier, this will tell you how to tell them apart.
    The Approach
    There's two ways to buy a CPU, either over a website, or in person.
    Websites rarely list CPUs by stepping code. They will, however, often list CPUs on their webpages and provide their OPNs. That's the ordering number.
    So long as we have all these different type processors around, you should NOT order from any place that doesn't have the OPN listed along side the processor. If you do, you could well end up with a Palomino when you expected to get a TBred, or get a TBredA when you expected a TBredB. After all, the webpage said you were going to get an XP1800 or whatever, not that it was a Thoroughbred. If you want to send it back, expect to get hit with a restocking fee if the place has one.
    On the other hand, if you order from a reseller that shows the OPN on the webpage (and save the webpage) and the OPN on the webpage indicates a Thoroughbred, if you get a Palomino, you're protected. They didn't send you what you ordered, and you have proof of it.
    If you think I'm overly paranoid, well, I've been in this situation, and it works.
    Never accept a salesman's verbal word that you'll get the "right" one. Most places have their goods in warehouses, often miles and miles away. The salesperson couldn't find out even if he wanted to, and many salesmen will tell you anything to get the sale, then deny it later. Always get it in writing before you order, any reputable place will be happy to do that if it's possible.
    Website pages aren't always accurate. If there is any contradiction in the description of the item (i.e., the product is called .13 micron or "latest technology," but it has a Palomino OPN, either find another place, or email the reseller asking for written confirmation on just what it is they are selling.
    What I've said works fine with OEM chips; retail boxes are another story, especially if you're buying in person. I just haven't looked at these boxes lately. Could somebody who can look at some tell me what kind of identifiers are on the outside of the box that might let people identify what they're getting?
    Which Codes Mean What
    To make this easy, what you need to know is listed by processor speed.
    The OPN information is printed somewhere on every AMD CPU. For all Palominos, if you're looking at one, the OPN is the first code printed on the core of the CPU located in the middle of the processor. For all Thoroughbreds, the OPN the first code printed on the black area on one edge of the CPU.
    This information is based on current AMD datasheets, which are subject to change. We'll update as needed.
    There are three critical indicators in the OPN.
    AX1700DMT3C: Voltage
    AX1700DMT3C: Maximum temperature
    AX1700DMT3C: FSB Speed
    The following codes mean the following:
    Voltage
    L: 1.50V
    U: 1.60V
    K: 1.65V
    M: 1.75V
    All Palominos have default voltage of 1.75V, so all Palominos have voltage code of "M." TBredAs have a default range of 1.5-1.65V. TBredBs have a default range of 1.6V-1.65V.
    Maximum Temperature
    T: 90C
    V: 85C
    All AMD processors with a rating less than 2200+ have a maximum temperature of 90C, so they're all "Ts." Anything above that has a max temp of 85C, so they're all "Vs." FSB Speed
    C: 266MHz
    D: 333MHz
    Here's how these codes translate in real life with real chips:

    Palominos: If the website you're ordering from shows an order code of AX1900DMT3C, that's a Palomino.
    TBredA: If the website you're ordering from shows an order code of AXDA1900DLT3C, that's a Thoroughbred A.
    TBredB: If the website you're ordering from shows an order code of AXDA1900DUT3C, that's a Thoroughbred B.

    Sorry, no exciting choices here (yet). They're all TBredBs, and they'll have an order code of AXDA2400DKV3C.
    Yes, the DKV part is the same as for the 2200+. That's because a TBredA runs at 1.65V (that's what the "K" stands for) at 2200+. A TBredB runs at 1.6V (that's what the "U" stands for) at 2200+ and 1.65V at 2400+ and above. 2600+
    These are all TBredBs, too, but just in case "which one I am getting" is getting old, the 2600+ gives you a new, different challenge: What Speed Am I Getting? There will be two 2600+s, but they'll run at different speeds. Since the 333MHz bus helps performance, AMD figured (correctly) that a CPU running at a slightly lower speed and higher bus was the same as a CPU running at a higher speed and a lower bus.
    The 2600+, 266MHz version, will run at 2133MHz.
    The 2600+, 333MHz version, will run at 2083MHz.
    We'll no doubt see more situations like this as the number of 333MHz processors expands.
    The way you tell these apart by OPN is that the 266MHz processors will always have an OPN that ends in "C," while the 333MHz processors will always have an OPN that ends in "D."
    Next spring, we'll get more of the same when Bartons show up. You'll have Bartons and TBreds running at the same speed, too.

  • Optimizing Processor Speed - Using Flash 8 Video Encoder

    I'm using the Flash 8 Video Encoder to convert .mov files to flv files. On my station I have the following:
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
    L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 12 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MP11.005C.B08
    SMC Version: 1.7f10
    I've got 151 GB available on my system drive.
    Presently, it is taking me approximately 2 hours 45 minutes to convert a 6 minute 26 sec mov to a flv with custom settings of:
    Max Date Rate: 300 kbps
    Frame Rate: Same as Source
    Audio Data Rate: 48 kbps (mono)
    500 x 333 pixels.
    HOWEVER, on an associate's computer he is able to convert under the same specs, same files, etc. in 1 hour 40 minutes.
    His computer specs are:
    Power Mac G5
    Processor Speed - 2.3 GHz
    2-CPU's
    L2 Cache - 1 mb per CPU
    Memory - 16 GB
    Bus Speed 1.15 GHz
    My computer has much more powerful processor, so we're confused why it's taking longer on my computer.
    I also have a second internal drive but presently the programs and source file are on my system HD. Someone suggested that I should try to make sure that the Video Encoder has max RAM allocated to it as well as having the scratch disk and cache set to the second internal drive. I don't know how to do this or even if it's possible but looking for advice and suggestions on how to better optimize the Video Encoder and would appreciate any help with this ASAP.
