Style, technique, and best practices question

I have a database containing a number of products (say 1000).
These
products are categorized into 5 different categories.
I want to deal with these products in ways that lead me to
wonder the
following -
1. Is it better to have multiple recordsets (one for each
category), or to
have a single recordset loaded into an array which can then
be manipulated
on the page, e.g.,
$blah = array();
do {
$blah[] = $row_recordset;
} while ($row_recordset = mysql_fetch_assoc($rsrecordset));
2. Also, at present I have this method implemented like this
<?php
$tester = array();
$socketTester = array();
$adapter = array();
$accessory = array();
do {
if (($row_rsTesters['ItemCatID']) == 4) { $tester[] =
$row_rsTesters; }
if (($row_rsTesters['ItemCatID']) == 6) { $socketTester[] =
$row_rsTesters; }
if (($row_rsTesters['ItemCatID']) == 2) { $accessory[] =
$row_rsTesters; }
if (($row_rsTesters['ItemCatID']) == 3) { $adapter[] =
$row_rsTesters; }
} while ($row_rsTesters = mysql_fetch_assoc($rsTesters));
?>
Could I do it with a single array key, instead of multiple
arrays?
<?php
$products = array();
do {
if (($row_rsTesters['ItemCatID']) == 4) { $products['tester']
=
$row_rsTesters; }
elseif (($row_rsTesters['ItemCatID']) == 6) {
$products['socketTester'] =
$row_rsTesters; }
elseif (($row_rsTesters['ItemCatID']) == 2) {
$products['accessory'] =
$row_rsTesters; }
elseif (($row_rsTesters['ItemCatID']) == 3) {
$products['adapter'] =
$row_rsTesters; }
} while ($row_rsTesters = mysql_fetch_assoc($rsTesters));

Manipulated? What is it you want to achieve? Generally, I'd
say a single
query, resulting in a single recordset, would be more
efficient than
several queries to the database, but how you'd do it would
depend on
your goal.

  • EFashion sample Universes and best practices?

    Hi experts,
    Do you all think that the eFashion sample Universe was developed based on the best practices of Universe design? Below is one of my questions/problems:
    Universe is designed to hide technical details and answer all valid business questions (queries/reports). For non-sense questions, it will show 'incompatible' etc. In the eFashion sample, I tried to compose a query to answer "for a period of time, e.g. from 2008.5 to 2008.9, in each week for each product (article), it's MSRP (sales price) and sold_price and margin and quantity_sold and promotion_flag". I grabed the Product.SKUnumber, week from Time period, Unit Price MSRP from Product, Sold at (unit price) from Product, Promotions.promotion, Margin and Quantity sold from Measures into the Query Panel. It gives me 'incompatible' error message when I try to run it. I think the whole sample (from database data model to Universe schema structure/joins...) is flawed. In the Product_promotion_facts table, it seems that if a promotion lasts for more than one week, the weekid will be the starting week and duration will indicate how long it lasts. In this design, to answer "what promotions run in what weeks" will not be easy because you need to join the Product_promotion_facts with Time dimention using "time.weekid between p_prom.weekid and p_prom.weekid+duration" assuming weekid is in sequence, instead of simple "time.weekid=p_prom.weekid".  The weekid joins between Shop_fact and product_promotion_facts and Calendar_year_lookup are very confusing because one is about "the week the sales happened" and the other "the week the promotion started". No tools can smart enough to resolve this ambitious automatically. Then the shortcut join between shop_facts and product_promotion_facts. it's based on the articleid alone. obviously the two have to be joined on both article and time (using between/and, not the simple weekid=weekid in this design), otherwise the join doesn't make sense (a sale of one article on one day joins to all the promotions to this article of all time?).
    What do you think?
    thanks.
    Edward

    You seem to have the idea that finding out whether a project uses "best practices" is the same as finding out whether a car is blue. Or perhaps you think there is a standards board somewhere which reviews projects for the use of "best practices".
    Well, it isn't like that. The most cynical viewpoint is that "best practices" is simply an advertising slogan used by IT consultants to make them appear competent to their prospective clients. But basically it's a value judgement. For example using Hibernate may be a good thing to do in many projects, but there are projects where it would not be a good thing to do. So you can't just say that using Hibernate is a "best practice".
    However it's always a good idea to keep your source code in a repository (CVS, Subversion, git, etc.) so I think most people would call that a "best practice". And you could talk about software development techniques, but "best practice" for a team of three is very different from "best practice" for a team of 250.
    So you aren't going to get a one-paragraph description of what features you should stick in your project to qualify as "best practices". And you aren't going to get a checklist off the web whereby you can rate yourself for "best practices" either. Or if you do, you'll find that the "best practice" involves buying something from the people who provided the checklist.

  • Best Practices Question: How to send error message to SSHR web page.

    Best Practices Question: How to send error message to SSHR web page from custom PL\SQL procedure called by SSHR workflow.
    For the Manager Self-Service application we’ve copied various workflows which were modified to meet business needs. Part of this exercise was creating custom PL\SQL Package Procedures that would gather details on the WF using them on custom notification sent by the WF.
    What I’m looking for is if/when the PL\SQL procedure errors, how does one send an failure message back and display it on the SS Page?
    Writing information into a log or table at the database level works for trouble-shooting, but we’re looking for something that will provide the end-user with an intelligent message that the workflow has failed.
    Thanks ahead of time for your responses.
    Rich

    We have implemented the same kind of requirement long back.
    We have defined our PL/SQL procedures with two OUT parameters
    1) Result Type (S:Success, E:Error)
    2) Result Message
    In the PL/SQL procedure we always use below construct when we want to raise any message
    hr_utility.set_message(APPL_NO, 'FND_MESSAGE_NAME');
    hr_utility.raise_error;
    In Exception block we write below( in successful case we just set the p_result_flag := 'S';)
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN APP_EXCEPTION.APPLICATION_EXCEPTION THEN
    p_result_flag := 'E';
    p_result_message := hr_utility.get_message;
    WHEN OTHERS THEN
    p_result_flag := 'E';
    p_result_message := hr_utility.get_message;
    fnd_message.set_name('PER','FFU10_GENERAL_ORACLE_ERROR');
    fnd_message.set_token('2',substr(sqlerrm,1,200));
    fnd_msg_pub.add;
    p_result_message := fnd_msg_pub.get_detail;
    After executing the PL/SQL in java
    We have written some thing similar to
    orclStmt.execute();
    OAExceptionUtils.checkErrors (txn);
    String resultFlag = orclStmt.getString(provide the resultflag bind no);
    if ("E".equalsIgnoreCase(resultFlag)){
    String resultMessage = orclStmt.getString(provide the resultMessage bind no);
    orclStmt.close();
    throw new OAException(resultMessage, OAException.ERROR);
    It safely shows the message to the user with all the data in the page.
    We have been using this construct for a long time for all our projects. They are all working as expected.

    Peddi.

  • Best practice question -- copy container, assemble it, build execution plan

    So, this is a design / best practice question:
    I usually copy containers as instructed by docs
    I then set the source system parameters
    I then generate needed parameters / assemble the copied container for ALL subject areas present in the container
    I then build an execution plan JUST FOR THE 4 SUBJECT AREAS and build the execution plan and set whatever is needed before running it.
    QUESTION - When i copy the container, should i delete all not needed subject areas out of it or is it best to do this when building the execution plan? I am basically trying to simplify the container for my own sake and have the container just have few subject areas rather than wait till i build the execution plan and then focus on few subject areas.
    Your thoughts / clarifications are appreciated.
    Regards,

    Hi,
    I would suggest that you leave the subject areas and then just don't include them in the execution plan. Otherwise you have the possibility of running into the situation where you need to include another subject area in the future and you will have to go through the hassle of recreating it in your SSC.

  • SAP Adapter Best Practice Question for Deployment to Clustered Environment

    I have a best practices question on the iway Adapters around deployment into a clustered environment.
    According to the documentation, you are supposed to run the installer on both nodes in the cluster but configure on just the first node. See below:
    Install Oracle Application Adapters 11g Release 1 (11.1.1.3.0) on both machines.
    Configure a J2CA configuration as a database repository on the first machine.
    Perform the required changes to the ra.xml and weblogic-ra.xml files before deployment.
    This makes sense to me because once you deploy the adapter rar in the next step it the appropriate rar will get staged and deployed on both nodes in the cluster.
    What is the best practice for the 3rdParty adapter directory on the second node? The installer lays it down with the adapter rar and all. Since we only configure the adapter on node 1, the directory on node 2 will remain with the default installation files/values not the configured ones. Is it best practice to copy node 1's 3rdParty directory to node 2 once configured? If we leave node 2 with the default files/values, I suspect this will lead to confusion to someone later on who is troubleshooting because it will appear it was never configured correctly.
    What do folks typically do in this situation? Obviously everything works to leave it as is, but it seems strange to have the two nodes differ.

    What is the version of operating system. If you are any OS version lower than Windows 2012 then you need to add one more voter for quorum.

  • SAP Adapter Best Practice Question for Migration of Channels

    I have a best practice question on the SAP adapter when migrating an OSB project from one environment (DEV) to another (QA).
    If my project includes an adapter channel that (e.g., Inbound SAP Proxy listening on a channel), how do I migrate that project to another environment if the channel in the target environment is different.
    I tried using the search and replace mechanism in the sbconsole, but it doesn't find the channel name in the jca and wsdl files.
    What is the recommended way to migrate from one environment to the other when the channel name changes?

  • Can anyone recommend tips and best practices for FrameMaker-to-RoboHelp migration ?

    Hi. I'm planning a migration from FM (unstructured) to RH. I'd appreciate any tips and best practices for the migration process. (Note that at the moment I plan to import the FM documents into, not link to them from, RH.)
    For example, my current FM files are presently not optimally "chunked", so that autoconverting FM file sections (based on, say, Header 1 paragraph layout) won't always result in an optimal topic set. I'm thinking of going through the FM docs and inserting dummy paragraphs with a tag somethike like "topic_break", placed in more appropriate locations that the existing headers. Then, during import to RH, I'd use the topic_break paragraph to demark the topics. Is this a good technique? Beyond paragraph-based import delineation, do you know of any guidelines for redrafting FM chapter file content into RH topics?
    Also, are there any considerations/gotchas in the areas of text review workflow, multiple authoring, etc. after the migration? (I've not managed an ongoing RH doc project before, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!
    -Kurt
    BTW, the main reason for the migration: Info is presently scattered in various (and way to many) PDF files. There's no global index. I'd like to make a RoboHelp HTML interface (probably WebHelp layout) so it can be a one-stop documentation shop for users.

    Jeff
    Fm may produce better output for your requirements but for many what Rh produces works just fine. My recent finding re Word converting images to JPG before import will mean a better experience for many.
    Once Rh is set up, and it's not difficult, for many its printed documents will do the job. I would say try it and then judge.

  • FWSM interface monitoring and best practices documentation.

    Hello everyone
     I have a couple of questions regarding vlan interface monitoring and best practices specifically for this service module.
     I couldn’t find a suggestion or guideline as for how to define a VLAN interface on a management station. The FWSM total throughput is 5.5gbs and the interfaces are mapped to vlans carried on trunks over 10gb etherchannels. Is there a common practice, or past experience, to set some physical parameters to logical interfaces? "show interface" command states BW as unknown.
     Additionally, do any of you have a document addressing best practices for FWSM? I have this for other platforms and general recommendations based on newer ASA versions but nothing related to FWSM.
    Thanks a lot!
    Regards
    Guido

    Hi,
    If you are looking for some more command to check for the throughput through the module:-
    show firewall module <number> traffic
    Also , I think as this is End of life , you might have to check for some old documentation from Cisco on the best practices.

  • Informatica and Essbase Best Practice questions

    We now have the Informatica adapter for Essbase installed and working. We have been able to get Informatica to upload data successfully. Now I have a few questions that I have not been able to find answers to in any documentation or forums for Informatica or Essbase. I have submitted these same questions to the Informatica Support but thought I would also post the questions here to see if many folks are using Informatica against Essbase.
    We are using:
    Informatica 8.6.1 (Linux)
    Essbase 11.1.1.3 (Windows 2003)
    1) I can see in Informtica that when we load data to Essbase (Target) it gives me the option to run a calc script AFTER it loads the data. However, if I need to run a Calc script BEFORE the load to Essbase (Target) what is the best practice? The work around I have found was to add the same session twice and for the 1st instance select the option to 'ONLY RUN THE CALC SCRIPT' on the mapping tab. The problem with this is the log shows that it will still run the query against the Source tables. This will impact run times and double to querying against the Source database. What is the Best Practice and proper way to build the workflow to Run a Calc Script BEFORE the load?
    2)Since you do not see the list of Calc Scripts for Essbase in Informatica (you have to manually type the Calc name), If I want to run the 'Default' calc for Essbase what is the syntax to run the 'Default' Calc Script? Tried 'Default' but didn't seem to work.
    3)I have other tasks in Essbase I want to do before actually having Informatica load the data. I would like to run the MAXL commands via a Command task. What is the Best Practice for doing this and the syntax to run MAXL commands in a Command Task in Informatica? I previously had Shell scripts built on the Informatica server that would be kicked off within Informatica, but we are trying to move away from shell scripts and instead have the scripting codes IN the workflows/sessions to make it easier to review the code and follow the logic, rather than having to find the scripts and open each of them.
    Any assistance you have with the two products working together I would GREATLY appreciate it!
    Robert

    AS i know addUser(User user){ ... } is much more useful for several reasons:
    1.Its object oriented
    2.its easy to write , because if Object has many parameters its very painful to write method with comma seperated parameters

  • Not a question, but a suggestion on updating software and best practice (Adobe we need to create stickies for the forums)

    Lots of you are hitting the brick wall in updating, and end result is non-recoverable project.   In a production environment and with projects due, it's best that you never update while in the middle of projects.  Wait until you have a day or two of down time, then test.
    For best practice, get into the habit of saving off your projects to a new name by incremental versions.  i.e. "project_name_v001", v002, etc.
    Before you close a project, save it, then save it again to a new version. In this way you'll always have two copies and will not loose the entire project.  Most projects crash upon opening (at least in my experience).
    At the end of the day, copy off your current project to an external drive.  I have a 1TB USB3 drive for this purpose, but you can just as easily save off just the PPro, AE and PS files to a stick.  If the video corrupts, you can always re-ingest.
    Which leads us to the next tip: never clear off your cards or wipe the tapes until the project is archived.  Always cheaper to buy more memory than recouping lost hours of work, and your sanity.
    I've been doing this for over a decade and the number of projects I've lost?  Zero.  Have I crashed?  Oh, yeah.  But I just open the previous version, save a new one and resume the edit.

  • HyperV 2012 best practice question (storage of guests)

    I was reading this post:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/askpfeplat/archive/2013/03/10/windows-server-2012-hyper-v-best-practices-in-easy-checklist-form.aspx
    and I saw two things, one where it says fiber channel is not support and one where is says loopback is not support?
    so my question is for a best practice, would local storage (say a local attached raid 10) be considered best practice? or a shared
    san lun? and if a san, would virtual stuff like IBMs SVC be supported?

    Using a SoFS with SMB3 as a Storage for Hyper-V and SQL Server/Clusters is Microsoft Nr.1 and you will see more and more push for that Design in every next Version.
    The TOP Features for me in that Combo is, you get 100% of all Features on Day One when new Version comes out, within Microsoft SMB 3.x are some realy sexy Things in it and you can use all the Standard Ethernet Stuff yu have and know already for years. If
    you Need super Speed you can do that with some RDMA Cards, still Ethernet :-) and if you do a Live Migration between any Combo of Clusters and Single Nodes you never Need to move the Data and Config Files :-) they always stay on
    \\SoFS\VMs :-)
    All Information you need are on http://smb3.info , Jose, my Mr. SoFS  collects and blogs about all Features and Step-by-Step Guides to test and prove that even on one sinlge Notebook, very very cool.
    As a Backend fot the SoFs you have many choices, from the new Wave of JBODs togehter with Storage Spaces up to the old Style SAN Boxes with or without Special Features. Allways check the Windows Server Catalog for supported Confgs, specially on the JBOD
    Side, make sure you get one with R2 Support und also with SES Support (SCSI Enclosure Services ). Jose also Blogs about that Topics very well.

    Hyper-V Cluster up to 64 Nodes and SoFS up to 8 Nodes depending on your Scaling Needs and having Storage splitted over separat DataCenters should be a good start :-)
    Just let me know of you need some Advice after doing a Design Session.

  • Tips and best practices for translating C into LabVIEW? SERIOUS newbie...

    I need to translate a C function into LabVIEW.  This will be my *first* LabVIEW project.  I've been reading some tutorials, and I'm still struggling to get my brain out of "C/C++ mode" and learn the LabVIEW paradigms.
    Structurally, the function that I need to translate gets called from a while-loop and performs a bunch of mathematical calculations.
    The basic layout is something like this (this obviously isn't the actual code, it just illustrates the general flow control and techniques that it uses).
    struct Params
    // About 20 int and float parameters
    int CalculateMetrics(Params *pParams,
    float input1, float input2 [etc])
    int errorCode = 0;
    float metric1;
    float metric2;
    float metric3;
    // Do some math like:
    metric1 = input1 * (pParams->someParam - 5);
    metric2 = metric1 + (input2 / pParams->someOtherParam);
    // Tons more simple math
    // A couple for-loops
    if (metric1 < metric2)
    // manipulate metric1 somehow
    else
    // set some kind of error code
    errorCode = ...;
    if (!errorCode)
    metric3 = metric1 + pow(metric2, 3);
    // More math...
    // etc...
      // update some external global metrics variables
    return errorCode;
    I'm still too green to understand whether or not a function like this can translate cleanly from C to LabVIEW, or whether the LabVIEW version will have significant structural differences.
    Are there any general tips or "best practices" for this kind of task?
    Here are some more specific questions:
    Most of the LabVIEW examples that I've seen (at least at the beginner level) seem to heavily rely on using the front panel controls  to provide inputs to functions.  How do I build a VI where the input arguments(input1, input2, etc) come as numbers, and aren't tied to dials or buttons on the front panel?
    The structure of the C function seems to rely heavily on the use of stack variables like metric1 and metric2 in order to perform calculations.  It seems like creating temporary "stack" variables in LabVIEW is possible, but frowned upon.  Is it possible to keep this general structure in the LabVIEW VI without making the code a mess?
    Thanks guys!

    There's already a couple of good answers, but to add to #1:
    You're clearly looking for a typical C-function. Any VI that doesn't require front panel opening (user interaction) can be such a function.
    If the front panel is never opened the controls are merely used to send data to the VI, much like (identical to) the declaration of a C-function. The indicators can/will be return values.
    Which controls and indicators are used to sending data in and out of a VI is almost too easy; Click the icon of the front panel (top right) and show connector, click which control/indicator goes where. Done. That's your functions declaration.
    Basically one function is one VI, although you might want to split it even further, dont create 3k*3k pixel diagrams.
    Depending on the amount of calculations done in your If-Thens they might be sub vi's of their own.

  • Best Practice Question

    I have 3 Areas for my DWH
    The first area is Staging then validation and core
    Staging is just do load date from the source systems
    validation is to validate data (every city has to have a countrie ....)
    core is my DWH shema.
    The First step in ETL is to load the data from core to validation, let's say my GEO_DIM Dimension goes to Countries, Cities and Regions in core. Additionaly I build a CRC SUM when I downlaod from Core to Validation and store the CRC Checksum in a Staging table.
    The second step is to load target from the source systems to staging, but only those date that are non equal to the previous downloadet CRC schecksum, so only changed or new data going to staging.
    The third step is do load that new/changed data from staging to core and proof some dependences. It's just validation.
    My Question is, what is the best practic to bring three tables (Countries, cities and region) to one Dimension
    thanks and regards
    Andreas

    Andreas,
    I guess the correct is depends... Without kidding, are you planning to use a flat star table for this dimension? If that is the case you would be joining the sources together and loading this into the table.
    Now this sounds way to simple, so I guess there is something more to the question...
