Any thoughts on how I would do this?

I would suggest using a preloader in this case, something that blends nicely with the current webpage it is embedded within.
Basically, a preloader is a small, fast loading, Flash movie that runs while the main application is downloading and initialising.
Plenty of excellent articles/examples on the 'net.

Why does the Flex app not looking right?

Hi,
I am making an AIR application. But what ever application that I make in AIR using Flex has grey area at the bottom. The canvas or what can I say, the stage isn't covering the whole area.

In the design view everything seems fine but there is an empty space below in grey color making my application usless.
This is a serious issuse for me.
Please help.

Creating apps in flash IDE doesn't give this problem.

how can flex tell if it's a mouseup event when the user
releases the mouse button outside the flex application? Say for
instance mousedown was done within a 500x500 embedded flex app but
mouseup is outside or relased on the HTML background. One more
thing, when we have something draggable, Flex doesn't execute the
stopDrag() when the user releases the mouse button outside the
embedded swf or fles app. Pls. help me with this. Thanks!

I don't think the flex app can tell what happens outside the
app. But it can detect when it leaves the app, so I have found the
following line works fine inside initApp():
this.stage.addEventListener(Event.MOUSE_LEAVE, yourFunction);
and you have to:

Styling the TabBar rollover color *without* skin

Hello all,
I'm styling the flex TabBar using Adobe flex explorer, and
facing a very annoying problem while trying to set the rollOver
color of the tabs.
At first place I thought I could set the rollover color using
the tabStyleName's fillColors style, but this style can only get 2
colors that determines the default bg color, unlike the ButtonBar,
whose fillColors can get 4 colors where the last 2 determines the
rollover colors.
Since TabBar extends ButtonBar, I thought that instead of
using the .tabStyleName I could use the buttonStyleName , in which
I can define rollover colors with the fillColors style which
receives 4 colors, where the last two, determines the rollover
color, as the buttonStyleName has no effect on the tabs.

You can include the email parameters. As far as having the link behave like a link and change colors, that cannot be done with a static textfield as far as I know. By its nature static text doesn't change.

Flex app doesn't work when moved from original location

I'm trying to make an image gallery in flex. It works when I run it in Flex Builder perfectly fine. The html and swf files from the bin-debug folder work perfectly fine when opened in any browser also, but ONLY when those files and all related files are opened from the default location that the application was built in. When I export a build to a different folder, the swf loads but none of the information from the xml file displays. I tried setting all of the paths of the reference files (namely the xml) in the flex app to the exact absolute location on the server, and it still didn't work when I uploaded it to the server.
I've tried several approaches starting from scratch and they have all come up with the same issue. I'm working with an educational license for Flex Builder, I'm not sure if they jip you on those and ruin the compiled swf.
Please help! I'm losing my mind over this.I think it has to do with something else besides the code since it works fine when I hit "Run", but if anyone thinks it will help to post the code let me know.

when you build an application using one of the wizards (like coldfusion flex application wizard) it hard codes
paths to cold fusion CFC's, and sometimes gets it wrong.
If your application references cfc's (or other remote objects) then it may be necessary to adjust the flex code
when moving the code into a different base folder.
For example in my own application, the url is http://localhost/crm_dev_flex and the built application gets put into
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\crm_dev_flex\bin-debug
References in the code to components found in c:\inetpub\wwwroot\crm_dev_flex\bin-debug\components\cfgenerated
(in the flex code these looks like crm_dev_flex.bin-debug.components.cfgenerated.<mycomponent> )
These need to change when you move the code to somewhere else.
Also, if you are using wizard generated cfc's then these also contain similar references that need to be changed.

my problem is within the [resultHandler] I want to simply
create a variable that will contain my results of the object I
passed so I can trace it to the screen.... I know that the object
is returning correctly, by tracing result.event. What am I doing
wrong here, cause it shows nothing.

object into some sort of array or string where I can access it...

Playing with Session Data in Flex App

Hi!
I'm trying to figure something small out.
1. Users login to (Index.php) and Session information is stored.
2. When I want to display specific session data, I use the code: $session->username
Now for the Flex Application
How do I display that "$session->username" in a label? on that exact page? (Index.php which loads the Flex App)

Detecting when Flex App is in background tab in safari

So here is my dilemma:
I load up my application (which streams data from a socket),
make a new tab in safari, wait x amount of minutes, and go back to
the application. I'm streaming video across the socket and on
return the frame rate goes through the roof, faster than the source
actually transfers at. So what I believe is happening is the flash
application stops playing, but the socket is still open so data is
being buffered at the lower level. Is there any way to detect when
the flex app goes into the background so I can close the sockets
and then reopen them later? Thanks!

okay spoke a little too soon - deactivate is fired off on any
time the app loses focus, not necessarily when it stops playing. Is
there an event which signals right before the player is going to be
paused? Thanks!

Running Flex app in Linux

Hi all,
I've got a strange problem on Linux (Ubuntu 8 running in
VMware): I've got a quite complex Flex application running in FP
10.0.12.36 where (in both Opera and Firefox)
- the "Settings" link in the FP context menu is greyed out
- the Settings popup does not appear when the Flex app tries
to save more data in a SharedObject than currently allowed for this
domain
- the Settings popup window does not appear when deliberately
triggered (via Security.showSettings)
With another simple Flex test application running in the same
OS as the same user in the same browsers, all these problems don't
appear. The only difference which I can see at the moment (apart
from the complexity of the application which of course shouldn't
play a role) is that the complex application is compiled from an
Ant task whereas the simple app is created and compiled inside Flex
builder.
I did not deliberately set anything in the Ant task which
could avoid the "settings" issue to work properly. In the Flex
compiler options I also can't see anything related to these
settings.
Does anyone have had a similar problem? Any clues or
suggestions?

You must use the 3.4.1 SDK that is provided on LiveCycle DVD or from an installation of Workbench (See the Customizing LiveCycle Workspace ES2 at at http://help.adobe.com/en_US/livecycle/9.0/customizeworkspaceui.pdf or the Creating Flex applications enabled for LiveCycle Workspace ES2 guide http://help.adobe.com/en_US/livecycle/9.0/createflexapps.pdf guide).
There are functions in the SwfConnector component that allows you to communicate with the IFrame but as far as I know, there are no APIs that are exposed.
I'll defer to others if they know about it.

   I am trying to deploy a simple Flex application in a weblogic8.1 server , so that I can use it locally.
Can any one please guide me where and how I have to deploy my flex app .
I am pretty new to this can any body provide me a guide or walk through step wise for me.
More over What is the url I need to give in the browser to access the flex app I deploy in the Weblogic server.
(At present I am using the IIS -- just copying the .swf file and wrapper html page in to the C:\Inetpub\wwwroot and giving http://localhost/test.html
in the browser to access it) --- How do I do this using Weblogic 8.1

Hi again Nash,
the stuff I am doing at present is not yet permitted to be publicly available, but the principles are very straightforward. Remember that WebLogic is primarily concerned with server-side functionality and Flex with client-side, so there is not really a great deal of overlap. The place where your Flex instantiation code will sit is in one or other JSP, using code very like the templates that Adobe generate. The only thing you have to do is ensure that your JSP (or the controller/code files behind it) generate HTML that contains the necessary. I tend to use the Apache Beehive libraries for UI stuff, but from vague memory I don't think these were around in WL8 - however, it doesn't really matter what tag library you prefer as all you are doing is generating HTML that looks like the usual JavaScript calls to AC_FL_RunContent (or swfobject if you are using that method). Basically, just take the Adobe-generated template and wrap the necessary bits and pieces round the edge to make it a proper JSP.
When you need to make calls to get functionality, just use something like

I have a server that provides input xml data to a flex app in a browser be displayed on the screen for editing over http. Can someone suggest a way to cache and simulate this server's response? I need the flex app in the browser to work even when the server is down (for testing and UI dev). Any tools or ideas that I may be able to use?

Automating a flex app on a headless server

I have a flex chart drawing application that needs to be automated. When automated it will read in data from the DB, draw the charts, and save them as .png files. This works flawlessly on my localhost version of oc4j on my Mac. However it has never worked on our Solaris oc4j deployment which is a headless server. I've set flex to run as headless in the config files but no dice. How can I get this working? Here are some of the error messages I'm getting:

How to call Flex app from Javascript in portal question

I've setup my flex 4 app with a callback function. The flex app is embedded in a Java portlet on a WebLogic Portal 10.3.2. How can I call the Flex app from the portlets javascript function? Code below shows how the flex app is embedded in the wrapper jsp.

Thanks for the response. I followed the instructions in the link, but it does not appear to work within a Weblogic 10.3.2 portal. My Flex app is wrapped in a Java JSR 286 portlet. Should this approach work or is there a different approach for the portlets wrapper JavaScript to call a Flex callback function?

Can I somehow add "Google Ads" to a Flex app?

I wonder wether it is possible to develop a Flex app which other users and web site owners can embed in their
own web pages. The Flex app itself should contain an area where the well known "Google Ad links"
are placed. This area should be automatcially updateable as usual and the developer should benefit from Google ad clicks
of users of the Flex app.
Is this possible?
Or are Google Ads only embeddeable in native HTML code/web pages?
