Subclips in Red project

I am cutting "Sucker," a feature film, in Premiere, shot on a Red Camera in 4K HD.  I have been editing for years on Avid, FCP, and many other systems, starting with film and a moviola.  I switched to Premiere for this film because of the incomparable R3D workflow, especially since I am dealing with a film with a lot of special effects, and being able to go in and out of AE is just to darn attractive.
After about a 2 week learning curve, I am pretty happy with Premiere.  I sorely wish for some features from other systems, but I also find that Premiere has things that other don't, which I like.  On the whole, a workable way to cut a feature film.
There is however, one feature lacking in Premiere that is vital in my opinion for a comprehensive Red/Premiere workflow.
Since every Red film that I have worked with is shot with seperate picture and sound, part of the Red workflow includes syncing dailes.  No problem, stick all the clips in a timeline, sync up the sound, link the clips and rename them.  But I am unable to take the linked picture and sound and turn them into subclips.  I checked with Help and confirmed that this is not a supported feature.
That means that I am condemned to cutting from a sync dailies timeline to a cut timeline, I cannot stick the clips in a bin and cut from there.  Overall, I don't mind too much, that is what I often do anyway.  But say for instance I have a piece of red video with no linked sound ( a reaction shot for example) that I have cut into my edit timeline, and I want to quickly match frame and see what other sync dialog is on that clip.  Even though on the timeline that clip has the take name and number name assigned to it by my assistant editor when syncing and linking, when I hit match frame, the name reverts to the original Red clip name, and there is no sync audio.  Bummer.  So now I have to find the dailies timeline for that scene, scroll through and find the shot I need.
There are also times that I want to organize footage into bins instead of timelines, which is what most Avid editors do, and cut from the bin.
So this is a long winded way of asking:  Any chance in the near future of being able to make subclips from sunk picture and track?

I cut from sequence to sequence by choice, adapting techniques I used editing film on KEM editing machines, (KEM was German editing Equipment manufacturer)  We would prepare rolls for editing organized by scenes or sequences, and cut from source roll to edit rolls.  We called the source rolls KEM rolls.  If the dailies for a particular sequence where extensive, we would make KEM rolls for all the Wide shots, others KEM rolls for the close ups, inserts etc.
I make KEM rolls in PrPro as well as FCP.  Unless the scene is huge, I put all the shots for a scene in one sequence, sunk together, linked and renamed to match the slate (scn 4-1, scn 4A-1 etc).  I make shortkeys in my keyboard customization - (M) for setting markers, and another (sift+M) for  going to next marker.  I add a marker after the director says 'action' for each shot.  Now, I can quickly go from shot to shot to compare takes by hitting shift+M.  If I want to go back, I have a shortkey for 'go to previous edit point' which takes me back to the beginning of the take.
As progress with editing the scene I keep adding markers for each line or action I want to compare.  If for example, the dialog for scene 7 between Ben & Jerry is:
BEN:  You like ice cream?
JERRY:  Yes I do.
In my KEM roll for scene 7, I will make a marker before Ben says his line in the 3 takes of the master, 2 takes of the OS and 3 takes of the CU.  I hit Shift+M repeatedly so that I can hear the 8 ways that Ben says "You like ice cream?"  When I find the line reading I want, I mark in and out and then hit the Lift key (;) then, I hit shift+3 to switch from the scene 7 sequence to the edit timeline.  Then I select which tracks I want the video and dialog to be on (shortkeys for that as well) and I hit paste (control or command V, or shift+V for Insert Paste).  I sometimes chekerboard my edit, putting Ben's "You like ice cream" on video 1 and audio 1, and Jerry "Yes I do" on video 2 and audio 2, that way I can play with dialog overlaps.
I then hit shift+3 to get back to the scene 7 and work on the next line.  By the end of the edit for the scene, the scene timeline is littered with markers and gaps where I lifted cuts.
I also use the shortkeys for track selection in my KEM rolls in the source sequence to just select a line of dialog, or just select a reaction shot without dialog.  that way I am getting just what I need.
Shortkeys I set up for track selection:  control (Command on Mac)+1 (numeric pad) for video track 1, then control+2 for video 2 etc.  For audio, I use option+1 for audio  track 1, option+2 for audio 2 etc.

  • Freeze clips after sending RED-Project to Color

I have a RED project, edited in Final Cut. there are some RED reference files consist from 2 RED clips. the clips in project are linked with the 4k reference files (-F.mov an the end) but in the file container there are 2 or 3 RED files the reference links to. in final cut no problem. but if I send the project to COLOR the clips freeze between the switch from RED-file 1 to 2. the only way I found to edit the red file direct to color. What can I do to make a good transfer from Final Cut to Color with mutiple RED files? Thanx!

Thank you for the information. it was very tricky to finish the project. The clips named ..._F.mov with Freezes in Color sent from Final Cut will be send back to Final Cut with the Freezes. So I made a new Video Track in Color and imported the original Red-Files (they have no Freezes anymore) and edited the lenght. I corrected them but Color doesn't send the new Video Track and the new material back to Final Cut... So in Final Cut I imported the in Color rendered .mov-files from the new material and this worked finally... I'll take a look at the colorfixer...

  • FCP7 RED PROJECT TO FCPX - edited in FCP7 w/ red proxy's want to online in FCPX

I have a project that I shot on RED, and edited with proxy files in FCP7. I would like to bring this into FCPX to do finishing and online using the original RED RD3 files. I have 7 to X, but am unsure how my proxy's will relink to the red Raw files.
Does anybody know what the workflow I would use for this is?
    Thank you!

Oh, I realized there is one more problem.
When I have Playback set to "use original or optimized media", sharen files have got great quality but file size is much bigger than every one source file, despite the fact that every one source file is longer movie than my new shared file.
I'm worried that, it does mean I have no control with sharing movies.
    Please help me

  • I have a RED project that is giving me many weird problems in color:

Certain shots show up as a freeze frames. Other problem shots not only show just a freeze frame but also are frozen in the handles of the shot! Please help.

first, what format is your sequence?  I've generally found that you need to massage your sequence before sending to color.  Putting everything you want to correct on one track and duplicating your sequence and deleting other tracks.  Have you applied any other filters to clips besides the 3way color correct?  Any speed changes?  Multiclips?  Imported graphics?
When I decided to use color to color correct a feature doc a couple of years ago, it took me about a week to clean up the sequence before I was able to successfully send it to color.

  • Is there a way to disable project window scrolling after creating a new subclip?

I am often editing short aftermovies from parties and my workflow is as follows:
    1) Capture and stash movies in a single folder (there's very little possibility for planning particular shots or tagging videos on the fly)
    2) Ingest media into Prelude and go through the clips identifying useful footage, subclipping and tagging
    3) Rough cut (optionally) and fine cut to music in Premiere
Now step 2 is where I'm being really slown down. I would ideally like to go through all the media as quickly as possible. Usually there's just one subclip per a clip.
However every time I add a subclip the whole project window just scrolls down and focuses on the new subclip and to continue to the next clip I have to scroll up, tediously look for it or search for it by numbers.
I thought that ordering the clips by date would solve this problem as I was expecting the focus to go to the subclip which should appear right next to the current clip. However there's an obvious bug in Prelude there. When you add a subclip while having Date created ordering on this happens: Subclip is first created at the bottom as with User ordering and the window focuses on that, then the subclip instantly moves after the current clip but the view doesn't refocus, leaving me in a possibly even worse situation.
It would be awesome to either (or all):
Remove the focus bug and refocus on the reordered subclip instantly
Add an option to disable the automatic scrolling of the Project window
Add keyboard shortcuts to go to next/previous clip
Add more filtering options to the current Subclip only such as Clip only, Non-tagged clip only, Tagged clip only (ideally through some custom filter option with checkboxes so you could tailor them to your needs)
Still it's a huge step up from the Premiere's multi window media organization nightmare but certain (possibly quite common) use cases are still very unrefined.
If any of the above mentioned options are in there already, please let me know, thanks
By the way when talking about Ordering related bugs, try creating a new Bin when having Date created sorting on. The Bin appears with its rename on, then it jumps to the top and voila you're renaming the last clip in the list. Like what the hell guys, do you even test the UI or is the CC turnaround too quick for that?

Hi, not sure if you'll see this post but the option has been moved to the 'Universal Access' Preference pane in settings.
This drove me utterly mad until I realized that.
    Hope this helps!

  • Is there a limit to the number of subclips displayed in FCP7?

I am editing a piece that has two large clips that I have divided into subclips based on the start and stop date and time. I can only display a little over 40 of these subclips in the project window. How can I see the rest of them?

Also, if you grab the lower right corner of the browser (project) pane and drag down as far as you can, you should create enough real estate to let you see all your sub clips.
I'm unaware of a max permissible number of sub clips in FCP. I've certainly had way more than 40 in some projects.

  • Problem opening a Premiere cs3 project in Premiere cs4

i recently did a clean install on a new machine with adobe premiere cs4
i attempted to open the project in adobe cs4 that i created in adobe cs 3
( i confirmed that the project isnt corrupted as the same project plays fine on another machine that has cs3 running)
Here is what happens When i open the project in cs4 it goes through the stages below and keeps looping and indexing.
*first pass: i first see adobe indexing the project and there is a  media pending display in the program display and on the time line the thumbnails have not been created where the edits are.
    * second pass: adobe finishes the indexing and then i see adobe looping again to conforming the video again, there is still a media pending display in the program display  but this time the thumbnails have appeared on the timeline and i see the subclips in the project bin.
    * Adobe stops indexing but there is still the media pending display on the program display so then i grab the timeline slider to scroll throught the project and then the indexing process starts all over again in this endless loop.
The project is located on a local drive and i turned off indexing on the drive.
I also tried deleting the rendered and preview files from the cs3 copied project , hoping that
CS4 would recreate everything. and still no luck
Any specific steps that i can do to trouble shoot this problem

When one Opens a CS3 Project in CS4, there is a lot of work that needs to be done. I'd Open the Project, and go get some coffee (decaf, so you will not loose your patience). Just let it do its thing with no input to the computer at all. Come back in 5 - 10 mins. and see if all have been completed. Be patient.
If you are actually getting a loop in the Conforming, Indexing and the rest - remember be patient - then close down and reboot. Try Importing the CS3 Project into a New Project in CS4 to see if things improve.
BTW did I mention being patient?
    Good luck,

  • How can I export many short videos from one project?

We had an awards ceremony, and the entirety of the program was filmed and is now saved on my computer as one large, continuous file.  I would like to edit it down to only the acceptance speechers (there are about 10 or so) and export them to MPEGs to share online.  Is there a way I can do this from within one project or do I need to start over every time, editing each speech out individually and then exporting?
Let me know if my phrasing was unclear.  Thanks for helping!

    bcoughlin33
I would offer the principles involved in the following blog post for handling the task that you describe.
    http://www.atr935.blogspot.com/2013/06/pe11-project-assets-organization-for.html
This involves trimming of the source (in Project Media area) in Preview Windows with the program's Set In Set Out points and the saving the trims as subclips in the Project Media and/or trims dragged to the Timeline.
If interested, please let me know if you need clarification on anything written.
We will be watching for your progress.
    Thank you.

  • Trimming subclips ...

Let's say you make a subclip and then wish to lengthen subclip on either side (where there is room on the original source video) like you can do with a regular video clip asset.  It appears that is not possible with in/out markers in the source monitor or trim brackets in the timeline.  Correct?
I am able to use the right-click Edit Subclip ... menu item for subclips in the project window (or displayed on the source monitor) which pops-up a window I can manually enter new start and end times.  Once I've done so I am able to extend a subclip on the timeline out to new start/stop times if increased, but no more.
Am I correct above?   I was really hoping to trim subclips like other video clip assets.   I've been using a workaround where I open the source video clip, drag it to the project window which creates a new instance with the same name, rename the new instance, then open and trim in the source monitor (or drag to the timeline).  Let me know if you have a better workflow assuming I am correct above.
    Thanks,
    Jon

I was really hoping to trim subclips like other video clip assets.
This feature broke in Premiere Pro 2.0 and as far as I know, was never corrected.

  • Cleaning up project?

    Hi.
Ok so I hope I'm not asking too dumb a question with the answer right on the first page of the manual...I've searched around forums and found nothing anyway so here it goes.
What's the best way to take all the subclips in a project and render them out losslessly in FCP 7?
I get these tapes from a nightclub which are mostly garbage that I have to edit. I do it at school where we are supposed to have our own storage, and I dont like the idea of having tons of hard drives filled with 9 minutes of shaky, unusuable footage for every 30 seconds of good stuff. I capture HDV from a Canon HV20, if that makes any difference. I just want to keep whatever segments are good and throw everything else away with a clean conscience.
    Ideas?

There's more than a couple of ways to do it. One would be to use Media Manager to make a new copy of the project - copying just the subclips. Another would be to place all the subclips in one Sequence, then export that Sequence as a self-contained movie (File->Export->QuickTime Movie). When you create the subclips, be sure to include sufficient handles to support transitions.

  • Subclips - Automate to Sequence: Ignores Subclip Length

My Research didn't find any answers to my problem:
Dragging and Dropping Subclips to the Sequence works as expected: Only the (shortened) length of the Subclip is dragged on the Timeline.
By Using "Automate to Sequence" the length of the original Clip (much longer) is dropped on the Timeline.
Is this by Design? I expected the same behaviour like dragging and dropping. With this behaviour its impossible to create quick rough cuts when you have Subclips in the project.
    Any ideas?

Workaround for me: The length of the SubClip is not ignored if you check the "Restrict Trims To Subclip Boundaries" at the Subclip Properties at the time you use the "Automate to Sequence" Function.
If you had to trim/extend the SubClip Boundaries afterwards, you have to uncheck the option for every subclip you used. So this really just i a workaround in my opinion.
So is this an issue for a bug report?

  • Problems editing subclips - Premiere Pro CC

I am trying to edit subclips that I created from merged clips. I double clip the subclip in the project panel to open it in the source monitor, set in/ out points in the source monitor, and drag and drop my selection into the timeline. When I play the selection in the timeline, the footage does not match what I selected in the source monitor - Premiere has selected a section of the clip later than my in/ out points. Is this a bug?

Yes, I will confirm that the subclips are not useable in PPro 2014 latest upgrade. The in and out points seem random, not at all what I select.
And what about creating a new master clip from a subclip, so that the program wont be crashing itself all the time trying to handle long media files?
This seems so basic that I cannot believe Adobe would even release a version without subclip capabilities!
I have given up even thinking about subclips for now.
It is hard not to get angry at Adobe these days. Too big, too corporate, too aggressive in shoving out new products before they are ready, and definitely too unresponsive to the customers needs.

  • Replacing a subclip with an After Effects Composition doesn't work properly

I have a Premiere Project with DV PAL footage. I have gone through my footage and identified all sorts of subclips in my project, and arranged them into bins.  For a few, on the sequence timeline, I want to replace them with After Effects Compositions so I can add some effects.
If I right-click on a designated subclip (or part of a subclip), and choose "Replace with After Effects Composition", After Effects starts up and I end up with an After Effects project containing 3 items:
    - a composition called "MyProject Linked Comp 1" (duration: length of sub clip, but the comp's layer itself (the next comp) has a duration of zero, so I just see black)
    - another composition called "My Subclip" (duration: length of subclip, starting at beginning of original video footage, not at start of subclip),
    - and then the full original video file also called "My Subclip" (and I mean the full original video file that the subclip points to).  This is full length.
The linked Composition is therefore viewed as being blank in After Effects, and is returned as such in Premiere Pro.
What does work properly is if I simply drag a selected clip (in/out) from the Source Monitor in Premiere Pro to the sequence timeline, and then right click and choose  "Replace with After Effects Composition".
Then I end up with an After Effects project containing:
    - a composition called "MyProject Linked Comp 2" (duration: length of selected clip, and the comp's layer itself (the next comp) has the correct duration, so I see the selected clip!)
    - another composition called "My SourceVideo" (duration: length of full original video, starting at beginning of original video footage, not at start of subclip),
    - and then the full original video file also called "My SourceVideo" (and I mean the full original video file that the selected clip points to).  This is full length.
In this case the linked Composition is therefore viewed as being the selected clip in After Effects, and is returned as such in Premiere Pro.
So subclips don't work as I would expect them. I have also tried with a few different video formats. Can anyone else reproduce this behaviour, or even better, find a way to make it work?
I am running Windows Vista x64 Ultimate, 8GB ram, CS4
Message was edited by: bobbymacadobe - added system info

I had the same issue. Created multiple subclips from various parts of a master, mixed subclips on the timeline (all from the same master clip) and when I replace it with an AE comp is send it over with 1 subclip only (eg I had clips for showroom and warehouse, it only send showroom) so any refences to the clips it didn't send were blank!
So I had to replace all the clips with the master clip (I would like to know if there is a quick way to revert subclips back to master, had to do it manually and it was a pain) and now it is working fine. This doesn't mean subclips don't work; if all the clips are derived from the same subclip it worked for me.

  • RED ProRes Worklow

    Hi all!
I'm about to start editing a feature with about 50 hours of 4K RED media. We'll be doing the finish in 1080p ProRes444, but in order to conserve drive space (and reduce the amount of initial transcoding time) I'm considering transcoding everything to ProRes LT (at a lower debayer setting) for the edit, then just transcoding the clips used in the final cut to 444 (full debayer) at the end.
Does anyone have any experience with a similar workflow, or alternate workflow suggestions? It's my first time doing a RED project this large so I'm open to ideas.
    Thanks!

Don't get 4 NVIDIA cards installed. You will run into issues with FCP, and Motion with multiple cards. I would go with the Radeon card.
Quad core with at least 4GB RAM will do well. You can't use more than that in 32 bit mode, and unless you plan on using other 64 bit apps, and you're sure that any and all plug ins will work in the 64 bit mode, you'll likely be in 32 bit mode for a while. You can always boost your RAM later.
Make sure you have a reliable and fast external storage device. Cal-digit comes highly recommended on this forum. It would also behoove you to research a CF card reader for faster transfer to your computer. (USB is slow as a dog.)
    http://www.addonics.com/products/flashmemoryreader/adsacf.asp
If you plan on doing the color correcting, make sure you have a capture card such as a Decklink or AJA Kona, along with an external, color critical, monitor.
Get a good chair while you're at it.

  • After making color adjustments, the reference monitors lag behind by about 10 to 15 seconds.

I've tried a new sequence, clearing cache, reinstalling, new project, nothing seems to help. Any advice? This only seems to be happening in one project - the one project I NEED to work on. This is making applying color correction/grading impossible as the colors are not updating in real time, so I have no idea how far to push my grading. This also happens when changing scale, position etc. Running Premiere CC 2014 update.

    Hi,
    Same for me...
I try on a Mpeg2 and h.264 project, even a RED project, on everyone I can play without rendering, but when I ad color grading, curves or sometimes scale adjustement, it makes 10 sec to display the result.
    Somebody has an idea ?
