Sudden slow down in data transfer

I'm reading data from the hard disk on a Target PXI System (8106 RT) and sending it via Ethernet to a Host PC and writing it to its hard disk. I read a chuck of data from the Target, send it using TCP Write function. The Host uses the TCP Read function get the data and write it to its hard disk. Data is being transfer over a Gbit Ethernet. A total of 9 files ranging in size from 700 MB - 2 GB are being transferred. The process moves along at an adequate speed until it suddenly slows down to slower than a snail's pace in the middle of a file.
By using probes (see enclosures) I've been able to determine it take approximately 17 seconds between when the data is read on the PXI to when it is written on the Host. However, an iteration of the loop on the Target has increased to over 3 minutes. The CPU usage on the Target and Host are minimal, less than 1%. Memory usage on the Host is also small. Any suggestions on how to diagnose what has caused this sudden slow down?

I would recommend using smaller chunk sizes for your data transfers. I would recommend something inthe 10K to 50K range. I have done quite a bit of profiling for sending large amounts of data and I have found that it is better to send lots of smaller chunks rather than fewer large chunks. Also make sure that you are not automatically building up large buffers in your application if you are using shift registers. If you are reading from a file read the file in chunks and send the chuncks. Don't read the whole file in in one read. One experiment I ran resulted in a single read of a large file (2 MB or so) took something like 10 minutes to read it in one read. However it only took a couple of 100 ms to read the whole thing in 10K chunks. Same applies to wrinting very large chunks using the TCP write. You can easily get a timeout if you write 1 MB as a single write because the receiver has not consumed all of the data within the timeout period. However, multiple small writes will reset the timeout for each chunk written.

  • File Suddenly Slows Down

What do I do when a file suddenly slows down? It takes 20 to 30 seconds for one sentence of text to slowly appear on the screen after I type it.
Problem is associated with one chapter (file) in a book of twenty. The other 19 are fine. Same symptoms when the same file is opened in another computer.
I tried starting with a new, blank chapter, copied and pasted the text and the problem reappeared.
I tried starting with another new, blank chapter, and retyped all the text. The problem soon came back.
I don't know if the problem is associated with a photo I place into the file, or with some text, or what.
Please help, very frustrating to not be able to work.
    Thank you,
    Henry

  • Sudden slow down after an auto-shutdown - kernel_task running hot.

    Hi,
I was playing Braid on supremely low battery, and my MacBook Pro 13" (Early 2011) running 10.7.2, automatically turned off. Plugged it into the charger and went to bed. Booted it up next morning and it is so incredibally slow. No warning, no gradual slow down, just all of a sudden. No peripherals attached at all.
Checked my Activity Monitor, kernal_task is running at 330mbs, from what I've seen that is pretty bad. That's the only thing I can see that is out of the ordinary.
Anyone want to take a stab at the cause of this sudden slow down? It's making using my laptop very very tedious.

Note: In Safe Mode kernal_task is running at 220mbs. Is that a clue? I don't know.

Hi! I need help with my Macbook Pro laptop (early 2013) that suddenly slowed down, and heats up while sleeping. It slowed down 3 days ago. I want to know what checks I can do to find what is wrong with my laptop. Thank You

Hi! I did reset SMC but it did not work but thank you. Now, my hard drive crashed, bought a new one, but unfortunately my laptop does not detect the new hard drive so that where I'm at. Im not sure if I need to format the hard drive, replace an internal part like the connector of the hard drive to the logic board or the new hard drive is broken.

  • Time Capsule only runs with 1,1Mbit up/down during data transfer, internet speed is ok, TC is used to extend an existing network

    Hello Everyone,
I have a new 2TB Time Capsule running with a MacBook Air. I want to use the TC to access data (Aperture library, iTunes library, other Files) and to backup my MacBook Air via Time Machine. I set it up, integrated the TC in my Network (FritzBox) by choosing "extend existing network" and it works. BUT only with 1.1Mbit/second while writing or reading Data to/from it. Internet speed is very good, like it was before. While the 1.1Mbit/second seem to be ok with Aperture and iTunes (streaming music and movies) it is still painfully slow and I'm not realy happy with that
    I've read that:
The 1.1Mbit problem is pretty common when Time Capsule is integrated and used to extend a network (bridge modus), it also looses all ethernet connectivity then (that woul explain why connecting it by ethernet didn't help during initial setup and data transfer)
Is there a solution besides ditching the Fritzbox and using the TC to build the network? Because basicly I still need the Fritzbox for its DECT features.
Thank you for any help in advance and have a nice day,
    Olli

You have double hop wireless with this setup..
You should bridge the TC.. that is router bridge not wireless bridge, and plug the TC into the Frizyboy by ethernet.
Then you can setup the TC wireless to reinforce the fritzy..
    Same wireless name as SSID.
Same security settings... really should be WPA2 AES or in TC personal.
    Same password..
    Just different wireless channel.
Then you can use 5ghz on the TC if you are up close and personal.

  • Premiere Pro performance suddenly slowed down to be virtually unusable, even for simple projects

I'm running latest Premiere Pro update on a late 2013, 27" iMac, with a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5 processor with 8GB RAM, Mac osX version 10.9.5.  I know that's not a lot of RAM, but up until the past week or so I was able to edit an hour-long 4K project with that configuration, as long as I ran the Premiere session at 1/8 resolution.  It did drop some frames if I tried to play a long piece of it without stopping, but it was workable for editing purposes.  But in the past few days, the session has slowed down to the point where it starts serious frame dropping from the moment I push play, and is basically unusable.   It also drops audio, and I can hear the drives clattering frantically as soon as I hit play.   My media is on 2-TB G-drives connected via USB3.
    What I've tried so far...
    - Ran diagnostics on the drives, and it found no errors.
    - Tried linking the project to the identical files on the backup drive.  Same problem.
    - I made sure my Mac's energy saver settings were set so that the drives never go to sleep.
    - I deleted all the media caches and Premiere preview files I could find.
    - I reset the Spotlight privacy settings so that they do not index any external drives, and only a few folders on the internal drive.
    - I made sure I'm set to devote the maximum amount of memory (6.5 GB) to Premiere.
    - Finally updated my Premiere software to the latest version.
None of these things made any difference.
    - Then I thought maybe the session had just gotten too big and bloated for my system to handle.   So I made a new project and imported a simplified version of just one sequence, which only references some of my color-corrected video files.  That way I only have to have one external drive connected, and the session is referencing much smaller files.  Still no improvement.
    - So I tried an experiment where I made a brand new Premiere project and sequence.  I imported just 5 video files into it.  The largest file was less than 3GB.  (I do Protools editing on that computer with files much bigger than that, on the same type of extermal drives, with no issues at all.)  With only a single 5-second video clip (and no audio) in the timeline, it still starts dropping frames after about 2 seconds.  If I put another 5-second clip in the timeline, the frame dropping gets twice as bad.  If I try to put a video crossfade on them, playback gets so jerky it's unwatchable.
So basically, I started out being able to edit a 60-minute long 4K video project with video transitions and multiple tracks of audio and video.  (It wasn't perfect, but it was workable.)  And now suddenly, I can't play a brand new session that has 5 small video clips in it, and no audio.    So it's not just my project or sequences that are the problem.  Premiere just no longer seems to be able to access and play back my media with any kind of speed.
What am I missing?  Can you give me some additional suggestions to try that I haven't already mentioned above?  (And yes, I know a lot of you guys probably consider my hardware setup completely insufficient for what I'm doing, and you're probably right.  But it was working well enough for me up to this point.  I'm so close to the end of my project, and I'm really just trying to get back to the functionality I had a week ago, so I can finish.)
I'd appreciate any suggestions.  I feel like I'm running out of things to try.

After a lot of troubleshooting, it appears the problem is related to the color corrected version of my video not being able to play back fast enough.  While my system had no issue with the raw 4K camera files, the increased color depth of color corrected Pro Res versions are just too much for my drives to play back in real time, even at low resolution.   Unless I want to do considerable system upgrades (which I don't), the solution is to keep my color corrected and non-color corrected video stacked on top of each other in the timeline, and to deactivate the video track containing the color corrected ones.  Of course, I can turn the color corrected track on when I need to check something with it, but for playback functionality while editing, I'm limited to the raw camera files.
Obviously this is an imperfect solution.  But because I'm basically done editing and just need to do some title work and a little trimming, I can finish the project working that way.
Incidentally, tech support suggested major upgrades to my memory and video cards.  But if I were going to attempt to troubleshoot this further, I would upgrade to a better RAID system before I would do additional upgrades to my mac.  It really feels more likely that's the primary issue here.

  • Sudden slow-down of my MacBook Pro

I have experienced a recent significant slowdown on my MacBook Pro.  Since it occurred soon after I finally got around to loading Yosemite, I was concerned that the new OS was a bit too much for the 5yr old laptop.  I found an older (long!) thread that recommended etrecheck and post the results in a new discussion.  I know there are some things I need to clean up too.

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.
Update OS X. Version 10.10.3 is the current release. To learn how to update OS X read Update OS X and App Store apps on your Mac - Apple Support.
Remove the following garbage from your Mac.
    "MacKeeper"
    "Sophos"
    "Symantec / Norton"
    "Trusteer Rapport"
Your Mac cannot operate properly with those products installed.
One or more of the following support documents may be applicable:

Verify their complete and permanent eradication from your Mac. Don't use any other techniques to get rid of them.
"Carbonate" is known to run poorly on Macs.
    "App4Mac" is outdated and obsolete.
    Other problems may be present.
You need to become much more circumspect regarding the software you choose to install. I apologize if that comes across as blunt, but you appear to have been exerting quite some effort in an attempt to prevent your Mac from working the way it's supposed to work.

  • Sudden Slow Down

Yesterday morning (6/10), for no apparent reason, my iMac G5 began to perform very slowly. Documents and applications are taking longer than usual to open and close. Occasionally, working online will cause the computer to freeze up altogether - forcing me to shut down and restart it using the on/off button.
The problem seems to be intermittent. The computer will work normally for an hour or so, but then the slow down will suddenly return.
I have restarted the computer several times over the past 24 hours, hoping the reboot will fix it, but it does not seem to make a difference.
I can't think of anything that I have done recently that might cause such a problem - my use of the computer has been pretty consistent. There are 84 GB still available on my hard drive.
Any ideas what might be causing this? Any tips on how to troubleshoot the problem? Thanks!

Your system info changed regarding your OS. Which OS do you have, 10.5.2 or 10.4.9?
How much RAM do you have?
I don't use Mail however, delete all messages you no longer need. Check your Sent box & delete those also.
Empty the Trash & also Compact the emails/folders.
Not sure Onyx does all the above for you. I use the free version of NetShred X which does all the work for you.
Surprised Font Nuke froze out your computer. Are you sure you downloaded v1.1.5? Anyhow, I believe Onyx will delete font caches.
You can also check & delete all duplicate fonts.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + click to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts. Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    *Regarding iTunes:*
Make sure you have the latest version & check out the iTunes for Mac Forums

  • TCP_DATAREADY event slows down TCP data

I'm working on some Labwindows/CVI code that communicates with an embedded device using the TCP libarary.
The CVI code is a client that sends requests for data to the embedded server.
The request / response happens in a timer callback.
The code does not use the TCP library callback TCP_DATAREADY event to collect the data.  This event has no code in it.
Rather the code running in the timer callback calls ClientTCPWrite(...) to send the request to the server.
Then it waits in a loop and uses calls to ClientTCPRead(...) to collect the response data as quickly as possible.
Most of the time this works well.  The TCP_DATAREADY never gets called.
However sometimes, if I do something with the user interface,  like drag a window around or something it gets into a situation where it starts
calling the TCP_DATAREADY very rapidly.  This has the effect of slowing things waaaay down.  No data is read in the TCP_DATAREADY callback so it eventually gets all the data in the loop in the timer callback.
Is there any way to shut off calls to TCP_DATAREADY?
Or is there a better way to set this up?
    Thanks,
    Kirk

The CPU usage goes up significantly when it gets in this "state".
It's not really while you're dragging the window around, rather it seems like causes it to start a vicious cycle where it makes very many calls to the TCP_DATAREADY event.
I put a counter in the TCP_DATAREADY callback. When I start the code that requests data from the server and check the counter it hardly ever counts up.  Then if I move the window or click a button that starts some data logging boom! the counter starts counting up like crazy.  It's as if my code that is polling ClientTCPRead(...) gets interrupted long enough to allow a TCP_DATAREADY event and from then on it always calls TCP_DATAREADY as fast as it can??
I put a SetCtrlVal(..) in the TCP_DATAREADY event to display the counter and when it gets into the "bad" state it REALLY! slows down.
Not surprising I guess because the user interface update takes a long time.
The reason I'm polling ClientTCPRead(...) is that I want to respond as quickly as possibly to the incomming TCP data.  If I knew how often TCP_DATAREADY events are generated I may be able to "centralize" my data reading in the TCP_DATAREADY event.
I tried putting ProcessSystemEvents() calls in various places.  Didn't seem to change the symptoms.
    Any more thoughts?
    Kirk

  • Brand new macbook pro slows down after I transfer files on from old computer

Hey, I just purchased a brand new Macbook Pro 3.5 GhZ Haswell processor, 500 gb of flash memory, 16 gb of RAM, OS X Mavericks, 17" retina display and while it's been great upon first booting up after I transferred over my music and books and docs from my old mac (about 150 gb worth (so I still have over 300 gb free on the new one)) I've seen a massive slow down and it's started giving me the beach ball of death which was the main reason I got a new macbook as my old one was beach balling so much it was nearly unusable. Very upset that this brand new stupidly expensive computer is already doing this. Any advice is apppreciated.

Either your RAM is no good, of poor quality, the wrong specs or it's not installed correctly or it got subjected to static electricity when you put it in.
Best Buy isn't as Mac centric, thus the quality of RAM that Mac's require may not be there.
You should have purchased from Crucial.com or Other World Computing or similar that tests the RAM to make sure it works the first time you put it in, as it costs everyone money to ship bad RAM back and forth.
I put in 16GB a couple of days ago, took five minutes and it works perfectly.
Nothing like top tier RAM for a top of the line machine, especially with all those tiny, easy to lose screws Apple uses.
