Suddenly my keyboard layout reverts to US?

A while back I set my keyboard layout to UK by creating /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-keyboard.conf with the following contents:
Section "InputClass"
Identifier "Keyboard Defaults"
MatchIsKeyboard "yes"
Option "XkbLayout" "gb"
EndSection
This has worked fine for a long time, but suddenly it has stopped working for no apparent reason.

ximun wrote:Does the gb layout work if you set it manually with setxkbmap?
shaurz wrote:Yes, setxkbmap gb works.
how about adding setxkbmap gb to your .xinitrc ?
Dirty hack? yeah, I know
Say, if you change the "gb" to another thing, like "es" or "fr" on your conf file, does that work? Im wondering if is a problem that affects only gb, or it affects other layouts too

  • My keyboard layout on iPad 4 is suddenly incorrect  anybody know how to fix this problem?

WWhen I opened my iPad tonight, the keyboard layout was,  nno longer as it should be. the letters are not in the right places, at least some aren't. Can anybody tell me how to correct this?

Second question first. To add the English keyboard did you go to settings> general> keyboard> keyboards> add new keyboard ?
Back to the first question. Hold your finger on the globe icon on the keyboard to see if another language keyboard has been added. If so switch back to English.
Next try a reset. Press and hold both the home and power buttons until the Apple logo appears. Release both fingers. Wait until your iPad starts on it's own.
If the keyboard is still messed up try settings> general> reset> reset all settings. Be sure you know you wifi password before doing this step you'll need to enter it.
Next I'd be heading over to the Apple Store and see if they have a solution. There should be a simple fix,

  • How can I stop OSX from changing my keyboard layout

I have an English system, a French AZERTY keyboard (I live in France), and I work in five languages. I have three keyboard layouts installed, including French, of course (I use French numeric).
After a recent update, OSX suddenly started changing my input layout against my wishes. I have always set my preferences to use the same keyboard in all documents unless I manually change it - so please don't tell me about that feature, I know about it. It's not the problem.
It seems to want to revert to the system language (English) rather than the keyboard layout I've specified. I tried changing my interface language to French, and guess what? It wanted me to have the French keyboard layout!
If some Apple engineer decided we should automatically have the same keyboard layout as our system language - this is bad UX. Some of us touch type (and therefore are used to one keyboard layout) and need for it to stay put. Others use different layouts with different character sets (Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Cyrilic, etc.). Don't force me to have the "convenient" setting automatically with no override. If there is a way to get around this problem, please tell us. I've seen lots of complaints around about this phenomenon, but no solutions so far. Not from Apple, and not from anyone else, either.
    Thanks.

  • [SOLVED] Keyboard layout not setting correctly after gnome 3.14 update

    Hey all,
After the gnome 3.14 update my keyboard appears to be reverting to US when I want to have it set to UK layout. It was fine before the update, and I have i3 & XFCE installed and for both of those my keyboard layout is getting set to UK just fine, so it appears to be just the gnome 3.14 update that is the problem.
Here is my contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-keyboard.conf:
    Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "Keyboard Defaults"
    MatchIsKeyboard "yes"
    Option "XkbLayout" "gb"
    EndSection
Anyone have any ideas what the problem could be?

My situation showed an extra issue related to this change.
After the upgrade I started getting two layouts (us,us) instead of just one (us).
    $ setxkbmap -query
    rules: evdev
    model: pc104
    layout: us,us
    variant: ,
    options: ctrl:nocaps
That broke my variant setting, which was altgr-intl (set via /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf). I was able to manually set that to "altgr-intl,altgr-intl" (with setxkbmap), and that worked.
After adding an input source as described above, of "English (international AltGr dead keys)", everything started working again for my purposes, without manually running setxkbmap, but I still have the extra layout:
    $ setxkbmap -query
    rules: evdev
    model: pc104
    layout: us,us
    variant: altgr-intl,
    options: ctrl:nocaps
Does anyone know a current method for completely disabling GNOME's keyboard management?
(I've tried several things from Google, but nothing seems to work for the current version).

  • Rime Chinese Input Set Keyboard Layout

    Hello,
I am trying to install rime chinese input. Unfortunately I have a keyboard with a QWERTZ-Layout, which I am very accustomed to. I am using rime in Gnome Shell. Is there any way to keep the German keyboard layout whilst switching to rime? My chinese is not very good, so I hope this forum appropriate for this question.
    Any help is welcome.
    Edit:
I solved it for the while by tweaking the rime.xml in /usr/share/ibus/component/
    This is my customized file:

Edit2: Unfortunately rime only gets started with the original layout somehow. Thus I reverted to simply tweak the <layout> option in the default engine in the rime.xml file.

i use fcitx-rime, you can change the layout for rime in the input method configuration panel while not change you system layout.

  • Where's the keyboard layout preference file?

I'm having an irritating problem with my preferred keyboard layout (Canadian) mysteriously reverting to other layouts, even though I have disabled all but the Canadian layout. It's only happening in one of my user accounts. So I'm looking for the keyboard layout .plist file to trash, but I can't find it. Can anybody help me locate it?
    Thanks

    Hello,
    Check out this link: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75066
When you originally set up your eMac, you would have used the SetUp Assistant... there's information at the link above that might help.
I've searched high and low for a preference file that might be related. You could trash your com.apple.systempreferences.plist but you would have to reset your System Preferences system wide. If you want to try that go to the user account in question. Go here: /Library/Preferences. Locate the com.apple.systempreferences.plist file and drag it to the Desktop. Open System Preferences and reset the keyboard (Canadian) and see if that helps. If that resolves the problem, then that com.apple.systempreferences.plist file should go to the Trash. The next time you open System Preferences your eMac will create a new pref file for you.

  • Lumia Black Update has changed the keyboard layout

I updated to Lumia Black on my 920, and the keyboard layout changed - most importantly, the space bar is smaller, and the comma moved, which means all of my messages typed now, look, like, this,
Can you revert the whole update or change the keyboard? It's enough for me to abandon the phone (that and the fact the screen appears to have been heat damaged by the wireless charger)

This has resolved my issue! Thanks Yas..

  • Windows Welcome Screen Keyboard Layout

Hello, I'm a Dvorak typist and I have changed my Windows settings to use that layout, but I cannot find (or there doesn't exist) an option to change the initial Welcome screen keyboard layout.  When locking my session or returning from screen saver
mode, the layout is correct, but if I've logged out or restarted, the welcome screen reverts to Qwerty.  Is there an option to change this?

    Hi,
I made a test in our testing environment, Windows 10 Technical Preview 9926 X64 English edition. After add the keyboard layout, such as Dvorak, we do need to restart the computer to let the setting come into effective.
Therefore, please restart your computer for test.

  • Hotplugging Keyboard Layout Switching Problem

With a recent update, my keyboard configuration got a bit hosed. The super key stopped working, I couldn't use shifts to swap keyboard layouts, and ctrl/caps swap reverted back. Instead of troubleshooting that, I decided to give hotplugging a try. I disabled the keyboard configuration in xong.conf and enabled hotplugging.
Everything is working fine with one exception. If I list more than one keyboard layout in the .fdi, the keyboard reverts back to 'us'. As far as I can tell (and other posts have verified this) this is pretty close to copy/paste from xorg.conf. If I use just a single layout, that layout works.
    Any advice?

    Hi
Looks like you use a wrong keyboard layout. I thin the language settings are wrong!!!
Maybe you have an US keyboard layout and the settings are set to UK?
Please check this in the control panel -> regional and language options -> languages -> details.
There you can add a second language or you can change the first one to another keyboard layout.

  • Keyboard layout problem

My wife has an old iBook running Mac OS X Tiger and it's been working just fine. Never any trouble at all with this sturdy old thing but today, for some odd reason, the keyboard layout got messed up out of nowhere. We're Swedish and need the Swedish layout ( åäö ) but it suddenly stopped working. The layout has changed and the @-character is now accessible while pressing Shift+2 instead of Alt+2. I have no idea why this happened and I have no clue as to how to change/restore the default layout. I've looked around in the International preference pane but nothing I did there changed a thing. Anyone else bumped into this particular problem?

Forget this question, I found out what was wrong. My father-in-law ( who isn't too good at computers ) changed the layout by mistake by clicking the little flag and so switched the layout from Swedish Pro to US English. Problem solved.

  • Keyboard layout issue

I've used the "French Canadian" keyboard layout from manual typewriters in high school in the 1980s to my current PB G4 using OS 10.4.11.
When I switched from OS 9 to OS 10, the "French Canadian" keyboard layout that had always been there in OS 6, 7, 8 and 9 had suddenly disappeared in OS X. After some posts on forums such as this one back in 2005 when I bought my PB G4, someone supplied a "French Canadian.rsrc" keyboard layout file that was the same as the original kb layout file I had used in Mac OSs past and I was a happy camper...
I just bought a used MacMini running OS 10.6.2 today. I transfered the "French Canadian.rsrc" keyboard layout file from the library/keyboard layout folder on my PB running 10.4.11 to the same folder on my MacMini. The French Canadian keyboard layout now appears in the "Languages and Text" control panel in the System preferences and I can select it along with other keyboard layouts within that control panel. When I click the Input select popdown menu in the menu bar, however, the French Canadian keyboard layout appears along with the other ones, but it is greyed out, so I can't select it.
I would really, really appreciate being able to get my old French Canadian keyboard layout back. Is there any reason the file works in OS 10.4.11 but not in OS 10.6.2 ?? Is there any way to change the file so it does work with the latest OS ??
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
    Marc P.

Sometimes the old .rsrc stuff will not work any more. OS X currently uses .keylayout files. See if this note helps regarding your particular problem:

  • Keyboard layout password problems

Just thought I'd point out that I recently changed my user password, but because apple seem to have changed their keyboard settings lately I was suddenly a bit screwed. I changed my password and included a £ in it. But for some reason shift and 3 makes £ when you are on the user login page, but when you're anywhere else in the system shift and 3 now makes #. This is news to me as I always remember # being alt and 3. But now alt and 3 gives you £, which contradicts what's written directly on the keyboard! If you're gonna change the keyboard layouts apple, please make it systemwide. Because I had to keep force shutting down my computer, because there's now a different keyboard layout for the password when you wake from sleep, than there is when you boot up. Pretty basic stuff, luckily I had come across this before and eventually I suspected this might be the issue, other people might not be so lucky. Please somebody sort it out, it can't possibly be that hard!
    I blame twitter

    1) Go to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274 and scroll down to the section "Resetting the original administrator account password." Reset it to something that only uses English characters. (This will be a temporary password; you'll change it to whatever you want later.)
    2) Then, boot back up normally, login with the new password, and go to System Preferences. Set the "Show input menu at login" option and change your password to whatever you want.
Let us know if this helps.

  • How can i disable Illustrator from changing my language / keyboard layout.

I have an azerty laptop and a qwerty external keyboard. Switching from any application to illustrator changes the language and therefore also my keyboard layout. No other application does this.

    Thanks for the reply Mike
But i have a laptop with azerty layout (Belgian) and an external qwerty keyboard (Brittish).
So i need both languages selected in the System Pref >> Keyboard >> Input source
When "Brittish" is selected and i switch from Apple Mail to Photoshop to Skype to Chrome to ... it all works fine.
Only when i switch to Illustrator it also changes my language/layout from "Brittish" to "Belgian" and stays like that. I need to manually change it back in the menu in Finder.
I like the brittish better (with a qwerty keyboard) because of the shortcuts (eg. sqare brackets -> shortcuts for order in Illustrator are not even on an azerty (Belgian) keyboard).
    Any idea?
