Suggestion for Brightness & Sound Dusplay problem.

After having upgraded to OS X 10.4.6 I started noticing I had no over my control of my brightness and sound display control. I reset my PRam but it did not solve the problem. I checked the keyboard controls.
However I did discover that by holding down the "fn" key and pressing the required keys, I can now control the brightness and sound control.
However I still have no backlight keys control.
Hope this helps.
Still loooking for a fix for the backlight keys.

  • Suggestions for new sound interface

I've been working with a Tascam US-122 for a while. It is a USB device
and I've been running into a lot of latency issues. Can someone suggest
a few firewire-based interfaces in the $300-400 range that would compliment
    my setup? Thanks!

Apogee stuff is the top of the line for A/D (although I haven't heard a comprehensive description of the difference between their pro and prosumer level products)
If you need more inputs than the Duet provides, check out Presonus Firepod. $400, and it's got 8 ins/outs as well as a S/PDIF input so you can add on anything with a S/PDIF output later. It runs real well, with zero latency monitoring and DI instrument inputs. I've been satisfied with mine, and I added an Apogee Rosetta AD to the S/PDIFs..

  • Suggestions for debugging my printing problem

I have a home network with three computers.
I have a desktop computer running Ubuntu Linux (9.10) and that is the computer to which my printer (HP Photosmart C4200 series) is connected. There is also a laptop running Windows XP, as well as my aluminum Macbook that I bought last year.
I have recently upgraded to Snow Leopard.
I cannot print from my Macbook to the printer which is connected to the Linux box. I can print from the XP laptop to that printer without any problem. I can "see" the Linux box from my Macbook, and I can copy files between the two computers. When I try to print, I get the following results:
"Network host 'ubuntu-computer' is busy, will retry..."
If I try to connect to the printer using the Printer Utility, I get:
"Photosmart is currently unavailable. Please check if it is turned on and connected, or try again later."
Can anyone recommend a way to debug this problem? I have been trying for several days to get this simple thing to work.
Thanks for any advice you can give

    Thank you for your reply.
I cannot add the printer using the Windows option or the Default option. The printer does not appear in the list of printers (there are no printers in these lists, because this is a small home network with only one printer).
Using the Windows option, I can see the workgroup in the pane to the left, and I can see the Ubuntu computer listed in the middle pain but, the printer is not listed. I cannot type in anything in the search box when Windows option is chosen.
When I choose the Default option, I can type the printer name in the search box but, nothing is found.
I have made sure that printer sharing is selected in my system preferences.
Previously, I was using the IP option to add the printer, and I experimented with using the three options:
    1) Line Printer Daemon - LPD
    2) Internet Printing Protocol - IPP
    3) HP Jetdirect - Socket
The IP option would allow me to type the address of the printer, and go that route but, it doesn't work.
From the Ubuntu side of things, I have selected: "Publish shared printers connected to this system".
There is an "Allow printing from the internet" option in the Ubuntu print configuration dialog. Maybe I should try that. But that seems a little weird.
Also, I just ran an update on the Ubuntu machine and there were some CUPS updates listed. But I haven't noticed any difference in behavior.
I am sure this is something basic/simple that I am just missing.

  • I cannot send an email from my iPad 2? No problem receiving, why does this happen? Have tried the suggestions for setting up email and after doing the sync mail through iTunes receiving worked great but still cannot send? Any help would be great

I cannot send an email from my iPad 2? No problem receiving, why does this happen? Have tried the suggestions for setting up email and after doing the sync mail through iTunes receiving worked great but still cannot send? Any help would be great!

The fact that you can receive means you have a valid e mail address, and have established the connection to the incoming server, so all of that works.  Since the send does not work, that means your outgoing server is rejecting whatever settings you used formthe outgoing set up.  Try them again.
Google your particular isp, and ipad and many times you will find the exact settings needed for your isp.  Or tell us here, and soneone else may be on the same isp.  Some mail services need you to change a port, or have a unique name for the outgoing server.
    Kep trying.

  • Safari (7.0.1) is non-responsive (spinning pinwheel) upon start up.  It will work in temp user account but not in my main user acct.  I tried reinstall via comman-r prompt on start up but the problem persists.  Any suggestion for reinstall or repair?

Safari is non-responsive after intitial start up.  Before it can load the homepage (google), it will hang and give a perpetual pinwheel until I force quit the program.  Safari works in temporary user account but not in my primary user account.  I have reinstalled osx via the command-r upon start up and the problem still persists.  Any suggestions on how to reinstall or repair safari?

Thanks for thinking about my problem. I've already experimented with creating a new user, a co-administrator. The programs don't crash when that account is running, just as they don't crash when the guest-user's account runs. So it seems that the problem is limited to the default user's account, which is the one that was running when I installed the updates to the OS and the firmware. Another clue is that the programs that crash as soon as they are launched are *probably* the ones that were open at that time in that account. Yet deleting Saved Application States does not keep the programs from crashing when next launched.
So the mystery continues, but these additional facts will help with the diagnosis, I hope.
    Thanks again for your suggestion.

  • Any suggestion for a new sound card?

    Hello!
My old PC has left me alone, and I'm going to build a new one from scratch this month. I'll be running Win7, I doubt I'll be going for Win8.
As for the sound card, I'd need some advice on what to buy: I have always had SoundBlaster cards and have loved them all, so I think I'll go for a new SoundBlaster (not even taking into account the built-in sound card on the motherboard...), but I can't discern which one would fit me best. I mostly use MIDI and soundfonts for recording study bases for my choir to rehearse and for composing orchestral music: I usually need complex MIDI files with many voices and instruments to perform well.
My old sound card was an Audigy with (just?) 48 MIDI channels (45 free + 3 drum channels), I'd like to have some recent card with good Win7 drivers, but still with many MIDI channels and soundfont support.
The one thing I'm sure I won't be changing at this moment is my 5.1 analogic speaker system, so I need a card with 5.1/7.1 analogic connectors.
Any advice (or wise info on what not to buy) will be much appreciated, thank you all!!!

Thank you for your advice. Have you tested any soundfont bank manager? Regarding this same soundcard, the Creative helpdesk told me it does not come in bundle... I was suggested to try with this one: http://ccfiles.creative.com/manualdn/Applications/AVP/11113/0xCA3D54C2/SFBM_PCAPP_LB_3_21_02.exe (Creative Soundfont Bank Manager 3.21.02), but they also told me (copied from their email)
This Creative SoundFont Bank Manager 3.21.02 is not bundled to the SoundBlaster Audigy Rx. You can try and test this but we do not officially claim that it will work.
Please note that the Creative SoundFont Bank Manager 3.21.02 is compatible with Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit or 32-bit, Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit or 32-bit with Service Pack 1, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE) 2005 or Windows XP MCE 2004.
For SoundBlaster Audigy Rx, it has synth a and synth b meaning 128/128 voices.
    No mention about Win8 compatibility...

    OK...
I was right.  You have no graphics driver installed for the Intel HD graphics adapter.
I am very surprised you were able to install the nVidia driver because usually you get an error that states you need to install the Intel graphics driver first.
Once you install this driver, the Microsoft Basic Display adapter should be replaced by an Intel HD graphics adapter and you should be able to adjust the screen brightness.
Make sure you have installed this Intel chipset driver first and reboot.  If you have done this already, you can skip this step.

Next, install the Intel HD graphics driver and reboot.  This driver is for W8.1.  If you installed W8, you need a different graphics driver.

    JoBautista,
you still have the option (before your warranty expires) of purchasing an AppleCare Protection Plan, which will provide an additional two years of coverage. Once your warranty expires, you will no longer have the option of purchasing AppleCare.

  • Brightness control noise problem

Just got a new iMac 24". The default display max brightness is way too bright. The problem is that reducing the brightness is accompanied by a very annoying electric hum at a frequency around the middle C on a piano. It sounds like a typical trafo electric hum, and it grows louder as you reduce the brightness.
In a busy office or work environment it would probably not be noticed, but in a quiet private workroom it becomes unacceptable. The hum also happens when the display is dimmed before going in sleep mode.
I am wondering if there is a way to adjust the general range of brightness, so instead of going from bright to very very bright it would go from say soft to a comfortable brightness. In this way I could leave the brightness at or near max where the hum is absent.
I've looked into the coloursync-control utility, but have not found a way to change the brightness settings.
Anyone recognizing this issue or have any suggestions?

I bought the 24" imac 3.06 Ghz in the beginning of June. About 3 weeks later when I reduced the brightness of the screen, which I had done in the past, I noticed an annoying hum that increased in volume as I decreased the brightness. I called Apple support and the tech, thinking it could be electrical interference, had me unplug any peripherals. That did not solve the problem. I tried every other outlet in my house and that didn't help either. I was also instructed to zap the pram and to unplug and hold power button down for 15 seconds with no success. He said to take in to a repair center for testing. The repair center could not solve the problem and told apple it was an acceptable, "normal" issue. Then Apple refused to fix it. I called back, spoke to a supervisor, He arranged to have a tech come to my house, replace the power supply and inverter cable. That did not solve the problem. After calling apple again a few more times, and speaking with another supervisor they finally agreed to exchange my imac. That solved the problem, no more annoying hum. Fyi, the old imac I had was a week 9 build made in china, the new one, a week 26 build made in the US.

  • Suggestions for ear/headphones

I just got my Nano and the Nike + system. The one problem I am having is with the ear buds that came with the Nano. No matter what I try, they keep falling out. Any suggestions for ear phones or headphones that work well for a runner?
    Thanks!
    Scott
    G4 Silver   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I have tried several different brands, all earbud style:
Sennheiser OMX-70 -- these do not fit my ear. The neck from the speaker to the outside piece is short and thick and so the headphones constantly pop out. I bought a podfitkit, which creates a mold around them to hold them in. It helps, but its difficult to get them in my ear with the mold. Plus, they are bright green, not my favorite color.
Shure e2c -- these are great sounding headphones, but I had trouble keeping them in after I started sweating. Plus, the cord is heavy, so you really need to use a clip with them.
Skullcandy smokin' ear buds -- these sound the best (to me, even better than the Shure e2c's). Lot's of bass without sacrificing quality for the higher frequencies. Very light, but are in canal models and thus can be difficult to keep in when sweating. Also, I don't like the cord. It is shorter for one ear. I prefer an even length cord. There is a merchant on EBay that sells them with Etymotic ear inserts. Have read other reviews that say this improves the sound quality and how well they stay in your ear.
Philips MP3-CD with flexible ear hook -- these don't have the best sound, but they stay in my ear better than any others. Indoors, the sound quality is pretty good. But, they are designed with a bass port which creates a lot of wind noise when running outside. Have never had one fall out. Probably my favorite for use while running, but not otherwise. Walgreen's has them for less than $10.

  • Suggestions for use of EQ Cymbols, hi-hats, shakers PLEASE

One consistent mistake I'm making in my my mixes is trying to achieve a balance between "bright enough" sound at the high end (pianos, Cymbols - hi-hats - shakers, etc). It seems if you don't add EQ and sometimes compression to these tracks at all you can barely hear them and I hate that muffled sound. Then, however, at the back end of my projects, I'm constantly faced with having to elliminate clipping or distortion with these instruments. Please share some techniques without getting to technical if possible. I know this is a subjective call.
But For Example, maybe someone migght suggest for EQ on hi-hats on Frequency Gain/Slope:
    99.0Hz, +8.0dB 1.10Q
    500Hz, +0.0dB 0.71Q
    1080Hz, +2.0dB, 0.71Q
    7000Hz, +12.0dB, 0.6Q
I also could use help knowing where to set the volume for individual tracks at the BEGINNING of the project. That's the other problem - setting my individual track volumes too high then having to "dig them out" of the mix at the back end and not having enough volume "head room" to do it. - TOTAL REWORK.
Lastly, is it generally NOT a good idea to have "yellow" notes (val:80)?

Due to lack of assistance, we were unable to pursue this requirement - the users were not happy, but what can you do, huh!
