Suggestions for video encryption?

I have a requirement to encrypt a video:
- the application generates a video file
- the user is presented with a 'preview' of the video
- after they agree to purchase the file is made 'available'.
We have custom code to generate the video, so we can do whatever we want in terms of 'encryption', i.e. just bunging a few random-ish bytes at the start of the file would be sufficient, which could be stripped off when the user purchases it.
The problem is obviously the preview - we are using a simple JMF Player, but of course it won't be able to handle the 'encrypted' file.
I had originally thought that we could simply extend FileDataSource (or something like that) and get it to skip the leading bytes, but no joy - the MediaLocator/URL framework completely hides the underlying file stream.
Any suggestions on how to proceed?
Thanks in advance for any pointers.

A DataSource really only has to do 2 things (technically, this doesn't refer to the DataSource itself but instead the DataStreams inside the DataSource)... report the format of the data it delivers, and then deliver the data in the read function. You'll know the format your video is in, so you can hard-code that. And then you can handle delivering the data in the read function by manually handling the FileInputStream stuff.

  • Suggestions for video codecs

I want to add codecs for videos.
VLC is said to be the best choice. Isn't it?
I foud also MX Player. Suggestions?
I would like to download only codecs, I am not interested to other stuff

So you're saying that you have a bunch of videos in codes(s) that can't be played natively in QuickTime? Do you happen to know which codecs?
Yes, VLC will play a lot of formats, you can also try Perian plugin for QuickTime, which is no longer actively in development but still available for download.

  • Need suggestion for data encryption

    Hello Experts,
I need your expert opinion on one of the data encryption method. We have some legal compliance to implement data encryption as listed below, lets say we have to apply encryption on 2 tables (1) TAB_A (2) TAB_B.
    (1) Need data encryption on the TAB_A & TAB_B for 2-3 columns and not the entire table.
    (2) Data should not be in readable format, if anyone connect to database and query the table.
    (3) We have reporting services on our tables but reporting services doesn't connect to our schema directly rather they connect to a different schema to which we have given the table Select grant.
    (4) Reports should work as it is, and users should see the data in readable format only.
    (5) There are batch processes which generates the data into these tables and we are not allowed to make any changes to these batch processes.
This is a business need which has to be delivered. I explored various options such as VPDs, Data encryption methods etc but honestly none of these are serving our business need. There is also a limitation of encrypting data as data volume of quiet high (30TB DB) and generally users query the data on millions of records at a time. Also reports have very tight SLAs as well. If we create any encryption wrapper then decrypt will take longer in reports and will cause the SLA miss for reports.
Could someone please suggest any better solution to me or if something is inbuilt in Oracle? We are using Oracle 11g.

  • New mac suggestions for video editing

I have been looking at getting a new mac to do mostly video editing and DVD authoring. I currently have a 450mhz g4 sawtooth that I thought about upgrading, but figured with the costs to just retire it. I have about a $1200 budget so I am unable to splurge and get a mac pro. Does anybody have any suggestions on what would work best for the money i.e. G5, G4 DP MDD, Macbook.
    Thanks
    Jamie

A refurbished MacBook Pro is a little more than your budget (at $1,449), but I think it's a better choice than the MacBook, as the MacBook has no expansion slot and an inferior graphics card.
I eliminate the iMac for the same reason - no expansion slots.
Basically, it's not recommended to capture video to your built-in drive, so you'd need to connect either a FireWire drive or an eSATA drive (with an ExpressCard adapter). However, your video camera is also likely to be FireWire, so you'd be trying to daisy chain a camera through the FireWire drive which is likely to cause performance problems. Even if the MacBook had two FireWire ports (the newest models do, a FW400 and a FW800, but the refurbs are the previous generation) they still share the same FireWire bus, so it's wise to get a FireWire ExpressCard adapter to add a second FireWire bus to the computer. That way, the drive can use one bus and the camera can use the other. Most cameras operate at 100 Mbps speeds, and slow everything else on the same bus down to those speeds as well. While DV is only 25 Mbps, you still have much less headroom to work with if the bus is operating a 100 Mbps speeds.
If you go with a MBP (or any Intel Mac) and you don't already have Final Cut Studio 5.1, you'll need to order the crossgrade. For users of Final Cut Studio 5, it's only a $49 upgrade, but you have to take advantage of it before the end of the year.
Adobe's CS suite will run slower on an Intel Mac than on a PPC due to having to run under Rosetta, but most of those apps should still be tolerable. I don't think I'd want to use After Effects under Rosetta, however.

  • Some suggestions for Video playback

I have found that by opening your videos in quick time you get much better quality. Go to QT - open file and get your video out of iTunes. You can then adjust your volume, size, etc. to whatever you want.
Within iTunes if you click on the video box in the lower left it will expand to your iTunes size. The little icon along the bottom will make it full screen.
However, still no answer for previewing tv shows.

Thank you very much for the email address. I have been looking for a place to send feedback since long and now hopefully I have the right email. I will send them more suggestions as an when I think of them.
    Regards.

  • Do You Have Any Suggestions For J2ME Encryption Applications?

    Hi,
Is anyone aware of J2ME applications that perform either of the following:
    1) Text editor with strong crypto support.
    2) Password wallet with data import/export functionality and strong crypto.
To date I have been unable to locate anything suitable to manage personal data on a mobile phone platform.
I am considering developing the required app myself, but my lazy nature has suggested that I check to see if there is currently anything suitable available.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions.
    Kind regards,
    JamesK

Under settings you can go into restrictions and limit their access to certain things, such as purchasing apps, etc. But there is no net nanny for the iPad that I'm aware of. Nor is there any sort of 'parental monitor/logging' type of app that will log what they do and generate a report to you.
If you want to get them something more locked down then you may be better served to look on sites like Toys R us or the such and look for items that give you more control.
THe iPad was largely designed as a single user consumer device that allows a single person to surf, read books, watch movies, listen to music, etc. It's not totally meant to generate content, or for multiple users or for children, which is why there's not a lot of content control.

  • Suggestions for video tutorials?

Newbie with the mac and FCE HD 3.5. I have an excellent book, but I am interested in watching video instruction first.
Any good training DVDs or training sites you can recommend? (lynda.com does not appear to have FCE training, only FCP)
I found one here that might be good?
    http://www.digitalmediatraining.com/products/fce2/index.html
    Thanks in advance.

I'm using one of Mastermind Tom's books to teach me FCE and it works like charme... ok, there's a slight language barrier (hey, Tom: you need a German translator? ... ) , but he has a very ... 'lively' (<< english?) way of explaining things.. lots of pics ... easy to follow..
plus a DVD, but mainly with demo files and a movie for iM>>FCE switchers...
I do prefer 'visual' learning too, but in this case, a book + a running app has for me a much better learning effect: better timing, better 'where is that button?!', better 'whooo - THAT looks good!' ...

  • Suggestions for video converting?

I have 50 video files, each about 360MB in size. I want to try and convert them so that each is no more than 200MB and will play on my iPod Touch. Can anyone recommend settings/codecs/frame rates etc. to reach this target? Thanks.

Hard to say without knowing resolution, bit rate, frame rate and quality of the originals.
Obviously the desired resolution would be 480X320(the resolution of the Touch's screen). As for audio-set it for stereo(or mono if audio not important) as surround sound(AC3) does you no good.
Bit rate I usually use is around 900kbs.

  • Suggestions for setting up external storage for video editing please?

I am just starting up as a one-man video-editing business, using a 24 inch iMac running Snow Leopard, with Final Cut Studio. I have realised I'll need an external hard drive for HD footage, and I also need to get some back-up solution in place. Looking for speedy i/o, I would like to connect via the ethernet port (if only eSata was included in the iMac, eh!)
I've been planning to get a Drobo, but looking around the forums I see that people say it's too slow for using as a working drive to keep all my source footage, so I've been looking at the G-tech 4 Tb, as it says it is designed for media-content production. Does anyone know if I could use two of the drives for working from and two as back up? Or would it be better to keep back-up entirely seperate, and get a Drobo for that for the G-tech to back up to?
But I am also wondering whether a Mac Mini could be a worthwhile addition to this set up? I find myself sitting around waiting for rendering to complete on clips in my timeline (not to mention exporting to Quicktime conversion!), and I wondered if I put a Mac mini with Xserve installed (Apple store offers this with two 500gb hard drives inside), maybe I could farm the rendering out to the mini while I get on with editing on my iMac? That would require two installations of FCP, which I thought was allowed, but just today in a forum I saw that one would have to be a laptop... anyone have any suggestions for getting rendering done without stopping FCP from doing other things simultaneously?
Also I don't know if that arrangement is even feasible... I see all these things like Xsan and Artbox... as a one workstation editing suite, does FCP handle all the dataflows for external working drive and external back ups okay without having to introduce more controllers?
And can anyone explain to me how I could set up an ethernet connection to an external hard drive, or does that require the extra controllers mentioned above? I've seen it said that you can do it via ethernet, but haven't seen how you can actually go about doing it.
Thanks for overlooking my newbie quality, any answers received with humble gratitude!
    Cheers, Syd

    Hi there,
as NLEdit said, there will be loads of answers to this.
IMO i'd avoid drobo like the plague. G tech drives have served me incredibly well working on a huge variety of broadcast projects (just over the water from you in Bristol), I've had no probs with FW800 when using DVCproHD, pro res is ok, sometimes a little slow with multiple layers and of course it eats up storage space. so I'd go for 2 4tb drives, keep the backup one in a different location.
one tip that has saved me countless times is to format them as follows:-
    mac os extended (not journalled)
    create 2 partitions
partition 1 - make this small (1gig) and call it "drive a - do not use"
partition 2 - the rest of available storage and call "drive a"
this is because the boot sector of the drive is within the first partition and with this method if it goes down it can be re erased without losing all your footage.
If you call your backup drive the exact same name and have the exact same folder structure, you will not have to relink if you get a problem.
Ignore getting a mac mini for rendering, won't help at all in FCP. instead I would make every attempt you can at buying a mac pro rather than an imac. much more expansion/speed possibilities and a more robust solution.
    best of luck
    Andy

What other videos and books are there? that you suggest. for step by step .

The various Lynda.com video tutorials are very good, but you have to pay for a description.  The Photoshop User TV podcasts are excellent; there are hundreds of them, and they are free.  They are also what the iPad was invented for.
The 'You suck at Photoshop' videos on YouTube are both very funny and very instructive.
The Scott Kelby books are very good for folk starting out.  The Martin Evening, and the Martin Evening/Jeff Schewe books are as good as they get from a photography point of view.  The Steve Caplin books are the best Photoshop books once you get into it, but Scott Kelby and Matt Kloskowski do some great medium to advanced books.  Matt's Compositing Secrets is excellent, and was Amazon's best Photoshop book for a while.

  • Need Mic suggestions for solo guitar video...

I have a Sony TRV-38 mini DV and need suggestions for an external mic. I want to video a solo guitar player sitting in a chair. Would I need to mic the guitar from a mic stand in front of him or would some sort of shotgun mic do the trick? Would buying a Beachtek unit be the best way to go, or is there a simpler/cheaper mic alternative that gives very good results. This is primarily just for good sounding archival footage.
    Thanks for any help.
      Mac OS X (10.4.3)

there are a couple of approaches... you can close mic, but if you are experimenting with your equipment and techniques, it is quite possible that you could get a very colored tone and not accurately depict the performace from a sonic standpoint.
something that is quick, easy, and relatively high performance at a budget is to use an M-S stereo shotgun mic. the left channel will be mono hypercardoid aimed right at the performer... with the mic mid range, not close mic'd. the right channel will be the "-S" component of the stereo signal, which is optional and can be decoded with an M-S stereo process in the edit process, or if for example, there was too much ambient noise, simply discard the track and just use the left / mono signal. (personally, i would probably just mount my audio technica M-S stereo mic on my rycote hotshoe adapter, and mic camera mounted... no stands or cables to deal with)
yes, the beachtek or similiar direct interface is the way to go, bypassing the Sony's poor gain stages (disable auto gain control, if possible).
IF sound quality is of the utmost importance, then the real correct way to do this would be to record with 2 mics in an X-Y stero mid field setup. expense, complexity, and possibility of getting something wrong are probably too high to do for something as critical as a 1 take live event if you don't have experience under your belt.

  • OS X 10.6.8 and missing plugin for videos despite latest version of Adobe flash player. Any suggestions please?

I have OS X 10.6.8. Despite downloaded latest version of Adobe flash player and VLC 2.0.4 I`m in trouble with `missing plugin` for videos. Any suggestion please?

Uninstall old Flash plugins then reinstall new ...
Uninstall > Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Very important uninstall the old one first.
    Then reinstall >  http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?promoid=JZEFT

  • Suggestion: Play All and Shuffle for Video

I'd really like to make a suggestion for Play All, and Shuffle Play All for videos in TV. I really miss that about my EyeHome I could set it to play a TV show continuously while I work on other things, one time I had two seasons of a show play shuffled and continuously for 12 hours while I was working.
Also more sub menus. So I can have a TV show name, click to then show All the seasons of that show. Click a season to show all the shows in that season. But at the top of each menu to Play All, and Shuffle Play All. Sometimes I like to randomly play all of a certain show.
Also sub menus for movies. So Lord of the Rings will be listed, clicking it takes me to All three movies. At the top I can start to play them all in Order.

Might try posting in the appropriate forum -> Forum: Front Row

  • Suggestions on video converter for MacBook?

    Hi all,
Was wondering if I might pick the brains of the other mac users out there...I'm trying to find out what the best software is for video file conversion between formats - most notably video files to DVD format, for Mac. From what I can see, iSkysoft DVD Creator and ImTOO DVD Creator appear to be two of the most comprehensive, but this is not my area of expertise.
Any thoughts from Mac users, or video converters in general?
    Thanks!

To create DVDs, simply use iDVD.
If you want other conversions, MPEG Streamclip does a good job and is free.
