Sumproduct and ignoring empty cells

Hi there!
I am working on creating a grade book with Numbers. And I would need help to find my way around a problem.
To calculate the general grades in the "I" column, I used the following formula to assign coefficients (weight of each assignement on line 2) to a range of cells containing a grade (result of a formula calculating the average grade for each assignment).
*I3 =SUMPRODUCT(B3:H3,$B$2:$H$2)*
(Line 3 is for a specific student, columns B-H for the average grades of students on 7 types of assignments that need to be shown).
I need to be able to give a general grade at any time during the semester, before all assignments taken.
Problem:
I cannot get a general grade (I3) until all the averages of all the assignments(B3:H3) are calculated (I guess because they contain references to cells with formulas: red arrow displayed until grades are entered).
Question:
Is there a way to calculate the general grades, respecting the assigned coefficients while ignoring the cells that don't have a numbered result.
The idea would be =SUMPRODUCT(cells with numbered result (B3:H3), $B$2:$H$2 only match when corresponding line 3 cell has numbered result)
I AM REALLY SORRY, I am new at this and it's hard for me to explain the problem in a more concise manner. I hope I made some sense!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE!

You were right, the reason why I was getting a red arrow is because AVERAGE cannot handle empty values.
Using =IF(COUNT(B2:D2)=0,0,SUM(B2:D2)/COUNT(B2:D2)) will return 0 as a grade...which would lower the actual final grade of a student.
That is why I was wondering if cells with no numbered value (or now with 0% as a value) could be ignored.
To have an average of the cells with an actual grade, respecting their Weight, I would need to have a (group of) function(s) doing the following:
1-Select each cell with value > 0% and multiply it by the assigned WEIGHT.
2-Sum of the individual products obtained.
3-(multiplied by 100%)divided by sum of all used assigned Weights
In the following picture you will see the actual grades for Interro and Participation, the 0% grades that should be ignored, the Total (20%) that is wrong because these cells were not ignored ...and the (hopefully) Real Total (78.8%) that I obtained typing:
=(Interrogations 'Student'*'Interrogations ' WEIGHT+Participation 'Student'*Participation WEIGHT)*Total WEIGHT/('Interrogations ' WEIGHT+Participation WEIGHT)
!http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg221/KathyFR/RealAverage.jpg!
Can you think of formula that would select the cells and make the calculations on its own (and that I could then drag to calculate the current total grade of all students throughout the semester)?
(Now, I don't want to waste too much of your time...I can understand if you want to give up on me! Thanks for all you've done already! Hope you have some fun thinking about the problem).

  • Ignore blank cells and truly blank cells in named range?

    Ok so my named range looks like this:
    ='Product Group Attributes'!$F$2:$F$1048576
    However, I want to ignore the "" cells and the truly blank cells... However, I think all of them will have "" since I have this formula in all of the ones I'm putting in the range:
    =IF(ISBLANK(C2),"",CONCATENATE(B2," - ",C2))
    How do I go about getting these results into a named range so I can use it on validation since validation only seems to ignore truly blank cells and not the "" ones.

    Actually, the "" cells means truly blank cells.
    But the "Ignore blanks" in data validation does not mean it will remove blanks from the list. It basically means that a Blank will be allowed as a valid entry in the cell.
    If you want to get rid of blank cells in the list, you have to create another list that does not include the blanks.
    Use the VBA code below to copy data in column F to column G, meanwhile it will remove the blank cells.
    Sub test()
    Dim arr, i&
    arr = Range("F2:F" & Range("F1048576").End(xlUp).Row)
    For i = 1 To UBound(arr)
    If arr(i, 1) <> "" Then s = s + 1: arr(s, 1) = arr(i, 1)
    Next i
    Columns(7).NumberFormatLocal = "@"
    Range("G2").Resize(s, 1) = arr
    End Sub

  • Missing a Formula for ignoring blank cells.

    I've made a spreadsheet in Numbers 2.3 for keeping track of FIFA standings for a group. Because the scores are empty, the formulas think it’s a 0. This is a problem for the draw column since it thinks that the scores are equal. Is there a function I’m missing here that I can add to my Draw column (E) to ignore the cells if blank? I'm sorry if this is solved, but I've been looking and cannot find anything I can use or understand. Thanks for the help.
    A link to the spreadsheet is here.

    Hi Tim,
    Interesting question!
    Here's a possible solution. It requires two auxiliary columns (which may and should be hidden) to be added to Table 1, and a new formula to count the draws in Table 1-1, column D:
    Table 1:
    Columns F and G are the auxiliary columns. The formulas below are entered into row 2, then filled down to row 6.
    F2: ="-"&B2&"-"&E2&"-"&IF(AND(LEN(C)>0,LEN(D)>0),"XXX-","")
    This constructs a string consisting of the names of the opposing teams (from columns B and E) plus a code ( XXX ) that indicates scores have been entered for both teams (ie, the game has been played).
    G2: =C=D
    This returns TRUE if cells in column C and D have identical contents, and FALSE if their contents differ. TRUE indicates a possible draw, FALSE that one or the other team has won.
    Table 1-1
    The formula below is entered in D2, and filled down to D5:
    D2: =COUNTIFS(Table 1 :: $F,"=*"&A2&"*",Table 1 :: $F,"=*XXX*",Table 1 :: $G,TRUE)
    Syntax for COUNTIFS is COUNTIFS(test-values,condition,test-values,condition,test-values,condition)
    There are two tests on values in column F:
    Does it contain the team name for whom we are counting draws?
    Does it contain the string "XXX" (Has the game been played?)
    There is one test of the values in column G:
    Is the value TRUE? (Do both teams have the same score—including both having no score–?)
    If all three conditions are TRUE, the row (game) is added to this teams Draw count.

    Barry

  • Pie chart legend showing digit "1" when we set "ignore blank cells"property

    All,
    We have pie chart in Xcelsius 2008 that shows the data with legend value and we have also set the ignore blank cells property to ignore the blank value from column. but once we set this property, it displays the digit "1" in the legend when there is no data.
    we are expecting that nothing should be displayed in pie chart legend when there is no data for the pie chart.
    Thanks,
    Sourabh

    hi Sourabh,
    I could replicate your scenario.
    Workaround is to create a duplicate of this chart. Go to properties of this new chart.
    Go to Appearance ->
    Uncheck
    - Legend
    - Mouse-over values
    - Data Labels
    for this chart.
    Write a logic in excel using 'IF' to verify if your data is empty.
    Use 'Dynamic Visibility' feature to display this chart only when your data is empty.
    Display your original chart if your data is not empty.

  • Query on MultiProvider by ignoring empty columns

    Hi Experts,
    I have a MultiProvider which contains 2 InfoCubes. InfoCube 1 (IC 1) contains Transport Request (TR) Status information, IC 2 contains Transport Request Object List information. Both ICs are related by the TR IDs. Not every TR has a Object List (better: Objects). Therefore, in IC 1 TRs exist that are not listed in IC 2.
    This leads to empty columns in the MultiProvider due to the union operation which is processed on both ICs. In particular the object related columns (object name, type, etc) are empty, if the TR does have a status information but at the same time without having any object listing, e. g. :
    TR ID - Status - Object Name - Object Type
    T123 - Successfull - # - #
    (# = Empty)
    When executing a query on this MultiProvider which counts the number of Objects I get the correct result, when NOT reporting on the TR ID level. However, if I execute a query which counts the number of Objects per Transport Request (TR ID), I get at least a "1" for EVERY transport request even if there does not exist ANY object within that TR ID (see example above).
    So my question: is there any way to ignore TR IDs when no object information exist for this Transport Request? Thus, the query would only report an object count > 0 if at least one object is associated to a certain TR ID.
    Many thanks for your help!
    Best regards
    Tobias

    I chose
    Exception Agg: Counter for All Detailed Values That Are Not Zero, NUll, or Error
    Ref Char: Object Name
    Activated Calc after Aggr.
    Did not change anything. I still get a table which shows the TR ID (eg T123), Object Name (Empty = #) and Object Count = 1
    I don't get why empty cells are part of the calculation even if the excep. aggr. is configured as described above...
    Any further ideas on that?
    Many thanks!

  • How to get an empty cell when SUM cells are empty?

    When doing a SUM, I want the result to be blank if there are no numbers yet. In Excel, if you have =SUM(A6:A30) with empty cells, the result is an empty cell.
    In Numbers, it's a zero.
    I know you can use =IF(SUM(A6:A30)>0,SUM(A6:A30),"") to put an empty string in the cell if there's nothing to add, but this doesn't work for negative numbers.
    I tried =SUMIF(A6:A30,"count(A6:A30)>0") and it puts a zero there even if all the cells are blank, and I don't think it's correct anyway.
    =IF(SUM(A6:A30)>0,SUM(A6:A30),(IF(SUM(A6:A30)<0,SUM(A6:A30),"")))
    works, but it seems rather cumbersome.
    Is there a better way?
    Ideas?

    Hello
    The best way I found to solve your problem is:
    =IF(COUNT(A6:A30),SUM(A6:A30),"")
    Which reads:
    if at least one cell of the range (A6:A30) contains a numeric value returns SUM(A6:A30)
    else
    returns a blank cell.
    Of course, if the sum is nil the displayed [thanks you Barry ;-)] value will be a zero.
    Maybe it's what schubladenschrank was offering but I don't read Deutsch.
    Just for info, your formula may be shorten as:
    =IF(SUM(A6:A30)=0,"",SUM(A6:A30))

  • Read Only and HTML Table Cell Attributes

    Hi Guys,
    I believe i have come accross a bug - i'm been working on a form that can be filled out and printed - when going into print for sake of the output looking nice i set the form element to read-only.
    As soon as an element such as a drop down box, text feild, text area, etc which display as "[selected value]" in plain text in read only mode, are changed to the read only mode apex seem to ignore the html table cell attributes.
    For example i have a id number in the top left and then a version number in the top right. Both use a text feild; the top left uses 'width="100%"' for it's HTML Table Cell Attribute to push the right cell to the right. and the right cell has 'align="right"'. Now this works fine when read only is off... but as soon as read only is on, both the width and the alignment are totally ignored, and i can't find any sign of them in the code.
    Because this is for printing; using the "disable" on the form element instead of "read only" function, isn't appropriate as disabled will make the elements faded and hard to read when printed, and keeping the elements as is will allow the user to edit information on the print screen - which is not appropriate.
    Is this a bug? Will it be fixed soon? Is there any work around?
    Cheers,
    Alex

    Use the "Read Only Element Table Cell(s) Attributes" in the Read Only region of the Item edit form.

  • Dimension member values not showing (just empty cells)

    Hi,
    I have an organization dimension (Business > Business Unit> Department > Account) and a single fact (Dollars) on my test repository. When I add my fact and any dimension level to an answers report I can see for example two empty cells for each member at the "Business" level and the result of my fact calculation. I've tried many ways to attempt solving this issue from aggregating my data to compressing all the dimension in a single table and still haven't had success. I also turned on logging and found out that the physical layer SQL being generated returns the correct values when I run it in my query tool.
    Has anyone experienced similar behavior? I'm not sure if I skipped a step on my modeling or this is a bug in my OBIEE installation
    Thanks a lot!!

    Had this problem when source datatype was nvarchar and the field was coming over as varchar with a length of 0 in the physical layer. Check your physical table definitiion to see the length of the fields that are empty for you, may have to change it to an appropriate value

  • How to fill an empty cell with the value above

    Hello,
    Please help me on the following issue related to BEx query and it's output in BEx analyzer as well as on Web.
    I am trying to modify a query output where the empty cells are to be filled with the value in the above cell.
    e.g. there is a column for transaction number, and this transaction number is the same for three rows, so it turns out to be two empty cells and only appears as if the transaction number applies to the first row only.
    not sure how to paste screenshot or attach document but would love to provide more information if the above isn't suffice.
    Please advise on what and where to modify in BEx designer.

    Any ideas why is that?

  • Create and Handle empty msg in JMS receiver Adapter

    Hi,
    In my interface scenario, I will have to create a msg output if certain conditions are met and should not create a msg if otherwise..
    I am using a Graphical Mapping and the receiver is JMS. I have some questions..
    1. Using Graphical mapping, Can I create an empty msg - If I dont map the root node if the conditions are not met, what happens to the msg during runtime ?? Will it create empty payload and does it error out as there is empty payload ??
    2. Like File adapter - is there a way to Ignore empty msg in JMS receiver adapter - so that it doesnt write any empty msgs i nthe queue..
    Any ideas/suggestions/experiences greatly appreciated please...
    Thank you
    Thanujja..

    Natesa,
    My bet. I am sorry I am wrong.
    One thing comes to my mind is you can do a multi mapping. So if it is ok then send to one receiver and if it exception then send as flat file which you dont use.
    Here since only one mapping is going to execute and the other going to fail you can write your own message exception in mapping stating "Its a know error". This is because if it is in produciton if this fails then it creates an alert. So just to tell to the end users it is ok you are populating the generic error. I know its not a good solution, but a work around kind of thing.

    I am trying to average multiple cells including some blank cells.  How do I get numbers to assess a blank cell as zero and include that cell in the average?

    Hi rkcfizzle,
    Blanks
    Blanks = 0
    1
    1
    2
    2
    0
    3
    3
    2
    1.5
    AVERAGE ignores blank cells (Column A)
    Formula in Footer Cell A6
    =AVERAGE(A)
    If you want to include blank cells as zero, type this formula in B2 (and Fill Down)
    =IF(A2<>0,A2,0)
    Numbers 3 will change the formula to
    =IF(A2≠0,A2,0)
    Yeah, right! but that is Numbers 3.
    And the answer (6/4) is 1.5. Correct!

  • How to ignore empty text element while using DOM to parse xml??

    hi everyone,
    i am using DOM to parse an xml file. But i dont know how to cinfig the DocumentBuilderFactory to ignore empty text elements.
    For example, i have an xml file like this:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
    <root>
        <child>Tom</child>
        <child>Jerry</child>
    </root>I used the following codes to parse:
    String fname = "Tom-and-Jerry.xml";
    DocumentBuilderFactory factory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
    factory.setIgnoringElementContentWhitespace(true);
    factory.setIgnoringComments(true);
    DocumentBuilder builder = domFactory.newDocumentBuilder();
    // Generate a DOM tree from the DOM builder.
    org.w3c.dom.Document dom = builder.parse(new File(fname));
    org.w3c.dom.NodeList list = dom.getChildNodes();
    for (int i=0; i<list.getLength(); i++) {
        System.out.println("Child No."+i);
        System.out.println("NodeName="+list.item(i).getNodeName());
        System.out.println("NodeType="+getType(list.item(i).getNodeType()));
        System.out.println("NodeValue="+list.item(i).getNodeValue());
        System.out.println();
    }The result is not exactly what i want ---- there are 5 children in list!! The 1st, 3rd and 5th are #text and their values are all empty. Only the 2nd and the 4th are the child that i expect.
    It is really troublesome to get all these silly empty texts as sub elements. I tried to get rid of them, but i failed. I just dont understand why factory.setIgnoringElementContentWhitespace(true) did not work.
    Anyone can help me? thanks.

    I just dont understand why factory.setIgnoringElementContentWhitespace(true) did not work.That only does something if the XML has a DTD that enables it to know what whitespace can be ignored and what is significant. The API documentation for the method refers you to this document:

    I have a ticker object that is showing the values from a QaaWs query just fine, but at the end of the list I keep getting the words NULL - NULL - NULL - .... This solution is working in the OEM release of Xcelsius 2008.
    The range is set longer than the expected number of rows returned to handle changes in the table its querying.
    I have Values selected and the Ignore Blank Cells In Values box is checked, so what am I missing?
    Is it time to log an issue within support?
    Tom Nather

    Hello Tom,
    This problem is known and documented.  It will be addressed in the next FixPack for Xcelsius 2008.
    The problem is caused by binding the QaaWS/WS Output Values field to more rows than are actually returned.  The cells that are not filled with actual data are formatted with an "undefined" value, thus they are not ignored by "Ignore End Blanks".  This is expressed differently depending on the component.
    For now, one workaround is to output the QaaWS/WS values to a range (A1:A10, for instance), then reference the range (=A1) in another (B1:B10, for example).  If the selector labels are bound to this 2nd range, they will Ignore End Blanks correctly.

  • I need a method for ignoring empty lines

    Hi to all,
    i need a method for ignoring empty lines when my program reades a file like that
    start of file
    print "xoxox"
    //ignore this line
    println"xaxaxa"
    //ignore this line
    end of file
    cheers

    Are you having trouble detecting these empty lines? Or are you having trouble not processing them once you've detected them?
    For the first case, you neeed to define "empty." I assumed it meant "containing no characters," and that's what the first solution shows. Your example looks like "empty" means "starts with comment characters."
    For the second case, you ignore them by just not doing anything: read a line
    if (it is not empty) { // by whatever criteria you define for "empty"
       do something with it
    }
