Sun Java Version Mgmt, Which Version, Deployment Methods

All,
We are preparing to deploy the Enterprise Portal NW04s (7.0).  We've realized that we have many different versions of Sun/Microsoft Java deployed around the organization.  I'm looking for advice around a few questions.
1.  Which version of Sun Java should we standardize on?  We're assuming the latest which is 1.6.0_03.
2.  How have other organizations deployed this?  Batch scripts, logon scripts??  We do NOT have SMS or other deployment tools.
3.  Is there a way to auto detect when launching the portal if someone has the right java JRE and if not to prompt them for an upgrade?
Thanks very much, any assistance is appreciated.

JVM of end users should not create trouble. Any JVM should do good in most cases. For portal users, browser version matters the most.
The best place to find the information you need is the platform availability matrix.

  • Will weblogic 4.5 work with the Sun Java Servlet Development Kit Version 2.1?

Will weblogic 4.5 work with the Sun Java Servlet Development Kit Version 2.1
(JSDK 2.1). The reason I want this is we want our application servlets to
use the new 2.1 redirection mechanism to redirect to JSP files.

WL 4.5 supports JSP 1.0 (and, therefore Servlet 2.1).
What I want to know is when will it support JSP 1.1 (and, therefore Servlet
              2.2)!

I get pop ups about updating my Java version but my system says I do have the right version. Which version of Java is the right one?

Most likely, you have a web plugin that depends on the Java runtime distributed by Apple, such as the Facebook video calling plugin or the "NexDef" plugin for watching baseball streams. If you no longer need the plugin, remove it. Otherwise, install Java.

  • Java 2 SDK which version is DST compatible

We currently have jdk version 1.4.2_06-b03 installed. I am looking into applying patches for the new DST implemented last year that were never applied. Is this jdk version dst applicable? Thank you.

  • Which version of iPhoto should I use?

When I picked up my repaired MacBook (Intel Core Duo) the person at the Apple Store showed me how to restore all of its data using my Time Machine backup.  He told me that during the repair they had installed Snow Leopard.  He had forgotten that I had told him when the MacBook first died we were told it was not worth repairing and we purchased a new MacBook Pro running Lion.  The TM backup was from that machine.  The intent was to have two machines with the same Apps & data so each of two users could take either machine and go forward from that point.  Each machine would then have its own TM Backup.
After many discussions with tech support, almost everything except iPhoto (and incoming Apple Mail) on the MacBook works OK.  That's probably because during the restore, iPhoto 9.1.5 was installed.  It does not open because of a Frameworks conflict of some sort.  Earlier versions of iPhoto say the Library was created with a newer version.  (I temporarily moved the iPhoto Library out of my User>Pictures Folder, opened iPhoto 7.x and imported some photo's to create a new Library.  That worked.  My original Library is 35 GB so each attempt to fix anything in it has been time consuming.  That's why I'm asking the real experts.
I've seen a suggestion from Terrance Devlin to "rebuild" the Library using the iPhoto Library Manager and others by Terrance, Neil, Old Toad, and Kappy to drag a different version of Frameworks into System>Library>?  (Apparently, some OS X 10.7 support files were loaded onto the MacBook.)  Which ones and which version?
Which version of iPhoto should I use on the MacBook?  Which version does OS X 10.6.8 support?  Eventually, we'd also like to merge some of the individual Libraries into a shared Library.  Is iPhoto Library Manager the best way to do that?  (Speaking of that, I understand Apple does not support backup of non-Lion Mac's via Wi-Fi, except if using Time Capsule.  Seagate sells an external 2 TB Hard Drive that connects via ethernet to your Router, for that purpose.  Does it work well?)

    Terence,
Below is a copy of the Problem Report I get after I double click the iPhoto (9.1.5) icon in my Applications folder.  Both iPhoto 6 and iPhoto 7 open but cannot read my iPhoto Library that was restored from a Lion TM backup.  I tried moving my iPhoto Library out of the Pictures folder and was able to create a new one using iPhoto 7.1.5.
Inside of System>Library, there are two copies of the following folders:
    Frameworks
    PodcastProducer
    Keychains
    Java
In each case, the name of the second folder includes "(from old Mac)" without the quotes after the folder name.  I believe my issue is being caused by the System using Frameworks instead of Frameworks (from old Mac), but I have not been able to switch them easily and, as you said, do not want to do serious damage.
The only other thing that does not work properly is incoming IMAP mail via AOL and Google.  Outgoing works on those two plus Incoming and Outgoing work on the Verizon POP account.

  • Which version of iPhone SDK is available for MAC OS 10.3.9

    Hi,
I want to develop an application for iPhone using my MAC OS 10.3.9 version.
Which version of iPhone SDK is available for MAC OS 10.3.9?
Can I install and work with iPhone SDK 6 or 7 version on MAC OS 10.3.9.
    Regards,
    Punit

but the installation steps of SDK says that it can be installed on MAC OS 9.3.x also by customizing it during installation for the MAC OS 9.3.x.
If possible, could you post a link to where this information is.
OS 9 does not have a version 9.3.x so I am not sure what you are referring to unless that was a typo and you meant 10.3.x?
I think you might get better support in the Developer forum. If you don't receive any other response here in this topic perhaps posting there might attract more knowledgable SDK users.

  • Welcome to this forum on "Core J2EE Patterns" by the Sun Java Center

Welcome to this forum on Core J2EE Patterns by the Sun Java Center!
    CONTEXT:
This forum is intended for discussing the patterns from the Sun Java Center J2EE Pattern Catalog and other topics discussed in our book, Core J2EE Patterns.
We, the authors of the book, welcome you to this forum.
    WHO WE ARE:
We are Enterprise Java Architects from the Sun Java Center (SJC), which is the Java consulting organization of Sun Microsystems. We are a world-wide group of architects focusing on all consulting related to Java technologies.
Visit our web-site for more information on SJC:
    http://www.sun.com/service/sunps/jdc/index.html
    BACKGROUND:
Over the last few years, we at SJC have worked with our customers in architecting, designing, and implementing solutions on the J2EE platform. We have worked on documenting the J2EE patterns for over two years and released the patterns for public review in Beta form via the Java Developer Connection in May, 2001.
The beta version of the patterns is available online as The Sun Java Center J2EE Pattern Catalog at:
    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/J2EE/patterns/
Subsequent to the release, we received great feedback and comments from hundreds of reviewers. We then worked towards incorporating the feedback into the pattern documentation. One of the common comments was about the lack of code examples in the online documentation. The latest pattern documentation provides many code examples and incorporates all the feedback received so far.
    BOOK INFORMATION:
Core J2EE Patterns, the book, was released at JavaOne 2001 during June 4-9, and will be available in stores around the end of June 2001.
The book includes the complete updated Sun Java Center J2EE Pattern Catalog with 15 patterns covering these J2EE technologies: Java Server Pages (JSP), Servlets, Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB), and Java Message Service (JMS). In addition to the J2EE Pattern Catalog, the book also provides other chapters that discuss design considerations,
bad practices, and J2EE Refactorings. Example code is included for all patterns and strategies.

    COMMUNITY:
The online community for discussing the patterns included in our book Core J2EE Patterns has grown over the past year, since our first presentation at JavaOne 2000. This community is supported by our LISTSERV and is available for public participation at:

    ---Authors of Core J2EE Patterns

    Rajakannan,
There are numerous ways to implement a templating mechanism in support of the composite view pattern, included in the catalog as a presentation-tier pattern.
The goal is to avoid simply having monolithic views with all the formatting code embedded directly withing the view. If we have common subviews that are shared across several or more views then we end up with a copy-and-paste type of reuse...undesirable. So, modularity is one issue. Another major force when considering the Composite View pattern is that we may want to manage the layout of our pages and the content of our pages separately. We may have some logical regions defined, such as a search panel and main body, and a subview that plugs into those logical regions that map to a physical page (ie: x.jsp and y.jsp). We may then want to vary one independent of the other...ie: we may want to modify the layout of the page w/o changing the content and we may want to vary the content w/o touching the layout.
There are a number of implementation strategies that can be used to implement the Composite View pattern, ranging from relatively simple to much more sophisticated. We describe each in our book and include source code examples.
The example in the book that allows for supporting all the issues described above is implemented using the "Custom Tag View Management Strategy" and uses a tag library written by David Geary, that supports the Composite View pattern. The library is also included in David's new book, Adv. JavaServer Pages, Prentice Hall, 2001.
Again, it's simply one implementation and, as you mention, there are many different ways to implement this strategy.
    Thanks for your question,
    Dan

  • Synchronization between AD and Sun Java Directory Server

I would like to build an environment as below, kindly let me know whether it is possible or not.
My Enterprise Directory is Active Directory and i have Policy Server which directs the sso users to get authenticated with that server. I would like to synchronize the user data from Active Directory to Sun Java Directory Server (existing version is 5.2 Service Pack 4) including the passwords and i would like to know with which hashing algorithm these passwords are stored in the sun directory server. Because i want to synchronize the same attributes from sun java directory server to Oracle Internet Directory and is it possible to get my sso users to get authenticated at OID even?
Kindly let me know whether this approach is feasible or not?
Any suggestion to this approach is greatly appreciated...
    Thanks in advance...
    Regards,
    Kishore Repakula.

i would like to know with which hashing algorithm these
passwords are stored in the sun directory server.Like most other directory servers, SunDS offers a few choices here.
The most secure is SSHA, which you'd probably want to use unless you have apps with dependencies on other hashes (e.g., CRYPT for backward compatibility with UNIX password field).
I would like to synchronize the user data from Active Directory
to Sun Java Directory Server (existing version is 5.2
Service Pack 4) including the passwords...Sun has a "Identity Synchronization for Windows" product which might work for you.
    http://www.sun.com/software/products/directory_srvr_ee/identity_synch/
Unfortunately, the big trick with AD passwords is that they are stored in a proprietary one-way hash, so you can't just sync them directly over to another directory. Likewise, you can't import password hashes from other sources into AD and expect them to work.

I think Service Pack 5 is not yet made publicly downloadable.

  • Plz tell me best procedure to administor Sun Java sys Messaging server

    Hi there,
I am working on Sun java sys messaging server( am new stuff) .Can you tell me the best approach from your expirience how to manage (Administor Sun java messeging server which uses LDAP directory server).please if possible daily check procedures including commands.
    hope hear you soon,
    best regards
    [email protected]

There's very little daily stuff to do. You will need to monitor disk usage, to make sure nothing runs out of space. Areas that grow include the mail store itself, the mboxlist directory (check for number of transaction logs, files with the name starting with "log"), and the log directory. Most of the log files "rotate", and so won't grow, except the "mail.log" file.
Every day, we take the "mail.log_yesterday", and add it to the "mail.log". We then take the "mail.log_current", and move it to replace the "mail.log_yesterday". And start a new "mail.log_current". We never purge the "mail.log". It's up to you to handle that, occasionally.
Other than checking for disk space, Messaging Server pretty much just runs.

  • Java 8 SE Embedded download - which version for my RPi?

One thing I struggle with is knowing which download for my RPi.
I keep reading I should use the hard floating point version.  That said, here's the only Java 8 SE Embedded version I see with HardFP:  ARMv7 Linux - VFP, HardFP ABI, Little Endian1
On my RPi, here's the output from "uname -a"
    > Linux bsrpi 3.10.34+ #661 PREEMPT Thu Mar 27 00:36:02 GMT 2014 armv6l GNU/Linux
Will the HardFP version on the download page work on my RPi?   It appears to be arm6.
The only thing I see available with ARMv6 is:  ARMv6/7 Linux - VFP, SoftFP ABI, Little Endian2
If you have the answer or even refer me to a good site that explains the differences, I'd be very grateful.  If not, I'll just keep pulling out my hair!  :-)

I also found some information from Hinkmond Wong's blog:  https://blogs.oracle.com/hinkmond/entry/even_quicker_guide_to_install
I'm pasting a modified version of the conversation and information here for other wandering souls!
METHOD 1 - download & deploy, options for compact profiles
Most Raspberry Pi distributions have been hard float for a while...  To check, look for the following file:
    /lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf
If this exists, you are running hard float.
Once you have your Pi on a hard float build, grab the latest Java 8 from here:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html
Grab the first one titled "jdk-8-linux-arm-vfp-hflt.tar.gz"
For doing compact profile work to learn how SE Embedded is used (and compact profiles work) go to the downloads on this page:  http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/embedded/downloads/java-embedded-java-se-download-359230.html
and start with this one:  ejdk-8-fcs-b132-linux-arm-vfp-hflt-03_mar_2014.tar.gz   (ARMv7 Linux - VFP, HardFP ABI, Little Endian)
then use jrecreate to shrink it.
METHOD 2 - use apt-get on the Raspberry Pi, full "embedded" version of the JDK
From Linux command line >> sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install oracle-java8-jdk
Note:  see Hinkmond's blog post and an excellent explanation in the comments section on the meaning of SE Embedded
    Enjoy!

  • Error With SCORM Content W Latest Version of Sun Java (1.6.0_10)

We're getting an error with users running the more recent version of Sun Java 1.6.0_10, but not with previous versions. This happens for all our SCORM content.
The Java logs are showing a lot of data, but the main symptoms seem to be:
network: CrossDomainXML: connection to host <our LMS server address> denied
LMS Error: 304 - Security exception
    and
    Error stack trace:
    oracle.apps.ota.lms.LMSException: java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.net.SocketPermission <our LMS server address> connect,resolve)
    and
    Returned: "false"
    *** LMSGetLastError() [Thu Oct 09 10:56:35 EDT 2008]
    Returned: "304"
    *** LMSGetErrorString("304") [Thu Oct 09 10:56:35 EDT 2008]
    Returned: "Security exception"
Our crossdomain.xml fille is configured correctly, and also previous versions of JRE are not having the problem (the Java logs look clean).
    Does anyone have any thoughts?
    Thanks.

    Hi All
Got a similar issue with the tracking / bookmarking of sessions - when on sun Java update 7 all is well however when update 10 or 11 is installed then SCROM session start on page 1 not the page you were on, also as expected they do not get marked as complete.
    Two things happen
    1) A small window is left for - [http://riti04.cornwall.nhs.uk:7780/ilearn/en/learner/jsp/relogin.jsp] - URL
    2) We get an Error on page - [http://riti04.cornwall.nhs.uk:7780/ilearn/en/learner/jsp/lms.jsp] - URL
Looked for the Plugin section as per a pervious within the Java Control panel - but I'm not seeing it.
We use iLearn 5.0 and I am begining to think we need a patch but unsure which.
    Thanks
    Stephen

  • In HCP Cockpit, is there a way to provide version information for the deployed java applications?

We have a Java Application which is deployed on HCP. When we make fixes and redeploy it again, is there a way that we can provide version information that could be useful to identify which version is currently deployed. Please advice if there is an alternate way to achieve this.

Unfortunately there is no way to do that current stage , you would need to add the tags manually.
    Thanks,
    Sanjit
