Sun Studio 12 - Optimal $PATH order - /usr/ucb - /usr/sbin - etc.

Hello,
I recently had trouble with compiling and installing code related to the order of various Solaris 10 directories in my $PATH. For example, /usr/ucb/install worked, /use/sbin/install did not. What is the recommended order of the following directories in the $PATH env. variable:
/usr/ucb/
/usr/sbin/
/usr/sfw/bin
/usr/csw/bin
/usr/ccs/bin
Obviously, one order will not suit all code, but what is the most common order of the above directories that will work most of the time with Sun Studio as well as just make and gmake outside of the IDE? In other words, if there are duplicate executables in the directories, which ones should be found and used first? I have added the above to my PATH piecemeal over time, so I am not sure what the default order should be. Maybe there is no good answer to this question, but...
Thank you in advance!

I always put /usr/ccs/bin first just in case - there are several development tools there (make is most important example) which are (or might be) different from GNU implementations with the same name. And I usually have to use Sun implementation when I'm on Solaris.
I also always put /usr/ucb at the end because it tends to have stubs for compiler drivers that get in the way saying "compiler not installed".
Can't say anything specific about the rest of directories, the order you specified in your post seems reasonable enough.

  • Sun Studio code hangs at fork, GCC code runs fine

I am encountering a strange problem where code complied with GCC runs fine, but the same code compiled with Sun Studio 12 compiler hangs at a fork call after an initial set of fork calls.
I'd appreciate your help in solving this.
The code was originally written for GCC, I started using the Sun Studio with a view to using Sun's thread analyzer. I made a couple of changes which I think are inoccuous:
    (a) added #ifdef __SUNPRO_CC char * __FUNCTION__ = "name"; #endif
    (b) one more #ifdef around one call to ctime_r because the g++ include expects 2 parameters while Sun Studio 12 expects 3 parameters.
    The g++ is compiled on a Solaris 9 (1 x sparcv9) using GCC 3.3.3
    while the Sun Studio 12 is on a Solaris 10 ( 4 x sparcv9).
Both runs were on the same Solaris 10 machine which has the compiler.
The program is a multi instance socket listener, the main program binds to a socket, then forks off a set of processes which accept connections, those children later fork off other client applications based on the connection data; after those clients exit, the children continue accepting etc. The main program only monitors the child processes, records their status and starts if any of those die.
This is working as expected when compiled with g++.
The exact same code (note the two sets of #ifdefs above) when compiled with Sun PRO CC alway hangs at the second set of fork. That is, it goes through the first set of forks fine, then when a connection is established, it reads the data but hangs right at the fork call.
The application code at this point is:
    char * p = pathfind( getenv("PATH"), progname );
    if ( !p ) {  printError(); return false; }
    pid = fork();
The truss for the Sun Studio code shows
    23914: access("/usr/bin/progname", X_OK) = Err#2 ENOENT
    23914: access("/usr/you/bin/progname", X_OK) = 0
    23914: lwp_park(0x0000000, 0) (sleeping)
while the truss for the g++ code shows
    23986: access("/usr/bin/progname", X_OK) = Err#2 ENOENT
    23986: access("/usr/you/bin/progname", X_OK) = 0
    23996: fork1() = 24005
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks and best regards

If I understand correctly, you are compiling with gcc on Solaris 9, and with Sun Studio on Solaris 10. Since the OS is different, you might be running into OS issues and not compiler issues. What happens if you build with the same gcc version on the Solaris 10 system where you see the problem?
    By "OS issues", I mean
    1. The program uses unstable or undocumented OS interfaces, or
    2. A bug that is new in Solaris 10.
A bug was identified in Solaris 10 that could cause forks to hang. It showed up in the libpkcs11 library as used by the JVM. I don't know whether it showed up elsewhere.
This bug was fixed in Solaris 10u2. If you are using an earlier version of Solaris 10, you could try upgrading.

  • [Sun Studio 11] Classpath issue: com.mysql.jdbc.Driver not found

    Greetings !!
I'm trying in an Applet to connect to a mysql database but the Applet fails everytime.
It works perfectly in console environnement with the same javaconnector.
    I read this:
+Classpath. Specifies the path to the classes that the IDE uses. By default the IDE uses its internal class path, which includes all mounted filesystems and various directories in the IDE's installation and user directories. The IDE ignores your CLASSPATH environment variable. Click the ellipsis button to display a property editor in which you can change the class path settings.+
So my CLASSPATH environnement variable is passed by (as I redoubted) but I don't know why even specifying classpathes in Options/Building/Compiler Types/internal compilations/expert/class path the I got the same behaviour from the Applet... is there another way to specify that this Driver* is located in */usr/share/java/mysql-connector-java-5.1.7-bin.jar* ??
I also added the jar files in Options/IDE configuration/System/File System settings/java librairies but same behaviour again... but when compiling the output windows indicates that it has finished jdbc... that's all, the Applet still can't open a connexion with the mysql server...
Can somebody could explain to me how set up the IDE to use this javaconnector in order to connect to the mysql database ?
    Thank you for your time...

    Any help!?

Did you install NetBeans separately or let Sun Studio installer do it? The latter usually results in working configuration.
I think that NetBeans installation simply doesn't have c++ pack; you can install one following usual NetBeans modules installation path and then re-try starting Sun Studio.
Another option is to uninstall NetBeans and re-install Sun Studio using its installer, which should set up NetBeans properly.

You have GNU Java 1.5.0. In order to use IDE and Performance Analyzer you need to install SUN Java 1.6.0.
    [http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/downloads/ssx/express_November2008.html|http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/downloads/ssx/express_November2008.html] :
The Sun Studio package installer, IDE, and Performance Analyzer require Java SE Development Kit (JDK) 6 Update 3 or higher, which can be downloaded from the [Java SE Downloads site|http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/?intcmp=1281] if the required version is not available on your target platform.

  • Sun Studio

I need a help with SunStudio
Instaling Studio, the sw need a paths, but executing the instal_paths, occur errors (the paths existing in SO), but the Studio not work.
    I need only C++ compiler,
    TKS in advance
    Marcio

First, did you use the installer, or did you install an Express Release tarfile? If you used the installer, did it report any errors? Check the installation log. (Refer to the Installation Guide for details.)
Your Solaris installation must be a "developer" or "full" installation, so that system header files, the program linker, and various other things are available. Check the contents of /usr/ccs/bin. You should see these files, among others:
ar as ld nm strip sccs
If not, you cannot build programs until you install the missing packages.
Next, I'll assume you want to run the C++ compiler from the command line. You may need to have the Sun Studio top-level "bin" directory on your path. With Sun Studio 12 and later, the installer will create symbolic links in /usr/bin, which is normally on your path, so that just typing CC will run the C++ compiler. But it does no harm to put <install-dir>/SUNWspro/bin on your path (ahead of /usr/ccs/bin and /usr/ucb if they are on your path).

  • Sun Studio (12,1) is unable to find a supported version of the Netbeans IDE

    Hi all,
We're working on upgrading both the hardware and software on our application currently, and part of this involves upgrading our compiler to Sun Studio 12.1. I downloaded
    SunStudio12u1-SunOS-SPARC-pkgs-ML.tar.bz2
from the Sun website and we installed it into the following location on our server:
    /opt/compiler/sunstudio12.1
I successfully compiled all my code using the compiler, however, when I try to launch the debugger by typing ./sunstudio in the 'bin' directory, I get the following error:

I have seen references to executing 'prepare_system' on forums while I was trying to investigate this, but when our sys admin folks try to execute the command, it does not work (command not found). They've mentioned that they expected a prepare_system script in the directory where we untarred the downloaded sun studio tarfile, but it is not there:

Ideally, I'd prefer not to uninstall / reinstall if at all possible as we're about to start system testing our executables, and I think a reinstall would require more unit teting and delays to our project (yikes!). But any input would be appreciated here.
    Thanks,
    Brendan.

    Hi David,
First off - thanks for the response. I do have some follow up questions if you don't mind though:
    1. When you say the install is corrupted, do you suspect
    - the file I downloaded from the website either was corrupted, or was not the correct file for my platform
    - the procedure used to install the software was incorrect
    - something else
    2. Is there a logfile that the sun studio install creates which would indicate an error during the installation procedure? I'm sure our admins who performed the install would have shouted if an error was logged... but on the offchance that the installation does not 'shout loudly' for some errors, I'd like to see a log of the error. At a minimum, I'd expect it to say why the install failed, and what we need to modify to ensure a successful install next time 'round.
    3. I successfully compiled my code using the C compiler from the install. My unit tests also look good... does this suggest that the install was at least a partial success, and would you suspect that my recompiled executables are reliable, despite the fact that I cannot launch the IDE?
    4. Today, one of our admins telnetted to our unix server - not via exceed by the way, but he did try the following test:
    - set his display env variable (he knew he would not get a display however)
    - executed the sunstudio script
He did not get the netbeans error, and the process appeared to be running (as I mentioned, without a display) until he killed it. I've asked if they can repeat the test using an exceed session. I thought there may be something on his $PATH that I did not have - unfortunately this was not the case (although, he may have access as 'root' to something that I require to launch the IDE). My question is, would you expect this behaviour if the install was corrupted?
Let me know what you think.
    Thanks,
    Brendan.

  • Building NCAR Graphics 5.2.1 on Solaris 10 x86u9 under Sun Studio 10 (2005)

    Hello,
I've got the following error when compiling ncar program with Sun
    cc and f90 and /usr/ccs/bin/ld.
    cc -ansi -O -I/usr/openwin/include -I/usr/include/X11 -DSYSV -
    D_POSIX_SOURCE -D_XOPEN_SOURCE -DByteSwapped -Di386 -DNeedFuncProto -
    c cl.c
    cc: Warning: illegal option -nsi
    cc: -a conflicts with -dy.
    *** Error code 1
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `cl.o'
After that i've changed the config/SolarisPC file and tried a build with gcc 3.4.3 and f90 but I got
ld fatal: library -lc not found.
I have an old box from 2001 which was under HCL of Solaris 8 x86.
The people at NCAR did not update their configuration files for Solaris 10 x86. The SolarisPC file is old and is using by default g77 as the fortran compiler. Could I mix gcc with f90 ? Which linker should I use in that case?
    /usr/ccs/bin/ld or /usr/ucb/ld?

Please refer to the C Users Guide for details of cc command line options. All manuals for Sun Studio 12u1 are listed here:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E19205-01/index.html
There is no -ansi option in Sun/Oracle C, nor has there ever been. The compiler attempts to interpret it as -a followed by some other letters, which is why you get a complaint about -a. Remove the option.
Depending on what you expect from the -ansi option, either the default compiler behavior or the -Xc option should work. I suggest trying the default behavior (no -X option). Refer to the manual for details.
Always use the /usr/ccs/bin/ld linker, but you normally should not use the ld linker directly. If you mixing C and Fortran, use the f90 driver to do the linking; it knows what Fortran libraries need to be linked, depending on command line option. When linking a program using only C, use the cc driver to link. Some C command-line options require linking special system files; the cc and f90 drivers know the rules.
To mix Fortran with C, refer to the Fortran Users Guide. I recommend using the Studio C compiler when mixing code, not gcc. The requirements of gcc are not known to the f90 driver, but it does know the requirements of Studio C.
The schema for a mixed Fortran and C program is something like this:
    cc -c f1.c f2.c <other options>
    f90 -c f3.f90 f4.f90 <other options>
    f90 -o myprog f1.o f2.0 f3.0 f4.0 <other options>

  • Installing  cooltools when Sun studio is installed in a non default dir

    Hello all,
I have installed sun studio 12 on one node of a SPARC cluster. When installing, I did not use the default directory (/opt/SUNWspro), but I used a different one as this installation is for trial purposes only.
Now, I want to install discover, ats and all other tools that are included in the tar file. I followed the instruction on suns web page : http://cooltools.sunsource.net/cmtdt/install.html, but all the information there is based on the fact that sun studio is installed in the default directory.
Does anyone know, what should I do in order to install the tools in the proper directory? Should I specify a path in the "pkgadd" command? Please help as I am stuck at the moment.
    Thanks a lot.
    Yiannis

I think I found the answer myself. It is written in sun's web page:
If the Sun Studio 12 tools are installed with a different base directory, say /opt/Studio12/SUNWspro/bin, then use the option -a none in the pkgadd command. When you are prompted for the <base_dir>, enter /opt/Studio12. The tools in the SPROprfns and SPROcool packages will be installed in /opt/Studio12/SUNWspro/extra/bin.
I think this solves the problem, but in any case, please feel free to comment on this one.

  • Can't use profiler (Performance Analyzer) in Sun Studio 12, please help!!

    Hi,
I've mandriva 2008 (linux), and I've installed Sun Studio 12.
At the first start of Sun Studio a message appear:
Warning - could not install some modules:
ATD Sun Studio Core - The module named com.sun.tools.swdev.toolscommon was needed and not found.
dbx Debugger UI - The module named com.sun.tools.swdev.toolscommon was needed and not found.
ATD Performance Analyzer Actions - The module named com.sun.forte.st.mpmt/1 was needed and not found.
ATD Performance Analyzer Actions - The module named com.sun.tools.swdev.toolscommon was needed and not found.
All other modules works correctly, but unfortunately I need the profiler (performance analyzer) because I want to speed up my C++ code. What can I do???
    Please help!
    NOTE:
I've added to my .bash_profile this lines:
    PATH=/opt/sun/sunstudio12/bin:$PATH
    export PATH
    PATH=/opt/sun/sunstudio12/man/:$PATH
    export PATH
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/sun/sunstudio12/prod/lib
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
but unfortunately this don't solve the problem....

If I type `uname -p` this message appear:
    [mlx@localhost ~]$ `uname -p`
bash: Intel(R): command not foundIf I type: --userdir won't work as you can see:
sunstudio --userdir /home/mlx/.sunstudio/12.0-Linux-Intel\(R\)\ Pentium\(R\)\ M\ processor\ 1.73GHz/I get an 426 line error (but this is the correct location, as man of sunstudio say), while if I type for example:
sunstudio --userdir /home/mlx/error 426 disappears, but I get anyway the error on the module:
Warning - could not install some modules:
ATD Performance Analyzer Actions - The module named com.sun.forte.st.mpmt/1 was needed and not found.
ATD Performance Analyzer Actions - The module named com.sun.tools.swdev.toolscommon was needed and not found.
dbx Debugger UI - The module named com.sun.tools.swdev.toolscommon was needed and not found.
ATD Sun Studio Core - The module named com.sun.tools.swdev.toolscommon was needed and not found. On the other hand I've searched the "id" exe and it is in /bin:
    [mlx@localhost ~]$ id
    uid=500(mlx) gid=500(mlx) gruppi=500(mlx)so I've created a sym link:
    cd /usr/bin
ln -s /bin/id ./idbut when I start Sun Studio 12 I get again the error on the module.
So I've tryed to reinstall everything (yes, also OS) but it (partially) solves only the problem installing with batch_installer. Infact now I can use batch_installer but at the end of installation it say:
    [root@localhost tmp]# ./batch_installer --accept-sla
Installation failed: cleanup successful.Anyway SunStudio 12 still works, but the main problem about the module of performance analyzer is still here...
how can I solve this? Please help!

Apparently the the config program is running dmake without the -m option. Dmake replies that it is defaulting to parallel mode, and the config program uses that message as a compiler command or option. After that, the wheels come off. :-)
Fix the configure script to run dmake as
    dmake -m serial
and see if that fixes the problem.

  • Sun Studio 12 in SXDE 9/07 VMWare image

Having a terrible time getting Sun Studio 12 to work in SXDE 9/07 VMWare image.
My main problem is that SunStudio refuses to compile anything. Firstly I couldn't get rid of "Could not successfully run the cc compiler to configure the built-in source file parser..." messgage. I've tried putting /opt/SUNWspro/bin in the PATH ahead of everything else, as has been suggested in a few other Sun Studio forums, but that doesn't seem to help. I've modified this in the .profile and restarted Sun Studio, even logged out and back in again, and the PATH setting is there, but Studio keeps giving me that message.
Next, when I press F5 for Welcome project there's a flashing Stop sign in the bottom right corner pointing to exception dump in messages.log
IOException java.io.IOException: Cannot run program "CC": error=12, Not enough space
    *********** Exception occurred ************ at 6:37 AM on Oct 14, 2007
java.io.IOException: Cannot run program "/opt/netbeans-5.5.1/cnd1/bin/stdouterr.sh" (in directory "/export/home/ted/SunStudioProjects/Welcome"): error=12, Not enough space
Anybody have any tips? I can't believe this isn't documented somewhere more fully, since this is right out of the box (figuratively speaking).

Could you please check the SWAP size on you SXDE.
Looks like the problem is here.
For example, on my machine there are only 512M of SWAP.
    bash-3.00$ /usr/sbin/swap -lh
    swapfile dev swaplo blocks free
    /dev/dsk/c0d0s1 102,1 4K 512M 504M
And, as mention in Sun Studio System Requirements (http://docs.sun.com/source/820-2973/release_notesML.html#SystemReqs),
Swap space should be minimum 1Gb(Recommended: 2 to 4 Gbytes).
You can expand swap on your machine this way:
    bash-3.00$ su -
    Password:
Sun Microsystems Inc. SunOS 5.11 snv_70b October 2007
    bash-3.00# mkfile 512m /export/home/moreswap
// Or you can select swap file where you have enough space.
    bash-3.00# /usr/sbin/swap -a /export/home/moreswap
    bash-3.00# /usr/sbin/swap -lh
    swapfile dev swaplo blocks free
    /dev/dsk/c0d0s1 102,1 4K 512M 499M
    /export/home/moreswap - 4K 512M 512M
After you increase SWAP space as required, there should not any exceptions.

  • Sun Studio in ClearCase?

    Hello all,
we want to import the Sun Studio 8 C++ distribution
into ClearCase, in order to be able versionize it.
I don't know if this is practical, but is it possible at
    all?
In general, is Sun Studio, once installed in /opt
relocatable to, lets say /vobs/compilers just
by a 'cp -rp'? What happens with subsequent
    patches? Can /opt/SUNWspro be deinstalled
    afterwards?
    Any comments/experiences?

we want to import the Sun Studio 8 C++ distribution
into ClearCase, in order to be able versionize it.
I don't know if this is practical, but is it possible
    at all?
In general, is Sun Studio, once installed in /opt
relocatable to, lets say /vobs/compilers just
by a 'cp -rp'? Sun Studio is installed via packages, which go into a defined location, recorded in the package database on the computer. Patches are tied to the installation location. If you move an installation, it will not match the package database, and patching will probably be difficult or impossible.
You can install Sun Studio where ever you want. If you want to move it to another directory on the same computer, you should completely uninstall it, then reinstall in the new location.
Package discipline is sometimes a pain in the neck, but it is the mechanism that ensures a known and consistent state for an installation and its patches.
    Here is a possible workaround.
Create a tarball of an existing Sun Studio installation. You can un-tar into some other location -- let's call it SS8. You can run Studio from SS8. You cannot patch the installation in SS8. You can patch the original installation, then create a new tarball for copying to SS8. (Patches sometimes have non-obvious effects, so create a complete tarball instead of just copying the files you think have changed.)
A Sun Studio installation includes quite a number of symbolic links. The symbolic links are either relative, or point into fixed system directories like /usr/lib. Do not use tar's "h" option that follows symbolic links. You need to preserve the links in the new location.
For the same reason, you should not use cp to copy an installation. You will get copies of files that should be symbolic links.
