Sunstudio on Solaris10 (x86)

I have installed Solaris10 on a computer with standard Intel architecture.
The installation of SunStudio12 can not be finished in the way
described in the Sun .pdf paper, because
there (on the hard disk) is not any file
called .installer or like this.
I used once the tar-bzz version of the installation software,
on the medium called as sunstudi.bz2.
After unpacking it I got 2 folders :
one called SUNWspro, containing a lot software, among it file to launch the sunstudio.
another one called NetBeans-5.5.1 containing the NetBeans software required by sunstudio.
Nowhere there was a file called installer or batch-installer.
The netbeans from the folder NetBeans-5.5.1 can not get started,
because an important file in folder /etc have not been found.
Also the suspected/expected folder /etc/netbeans was not found.
I have installed NetBeans one time and could compile and launch java programs,
I don't know, why not now.
Does somebody know is to do to improve the system to let the netbeans start ?
Does somebody know, why the compilers, contained in SUNWspro
don't make executable files by compilation c++ cofde files ?
The executables, which the SunStudio Compilers makes by using the command line
don't start due to some memory errors, the log files called "core" -like don't let m,e open them in an editor.

Dear Nik,
I think, I got the problem solved, though I am not finished.
I try to split the message into 4 blocks :
1(sunstudio)
2(netbeans)
3(built by-myself biaries)
4(solaris)
ad 1 (sunstudio)
I unzipped by bunzip2 the delivered sunstudio sources:
$>bunzip2 sunstudi.bz2
After this I moved it to folder /opt.
$>mv sunstudi /opt
I unpacked the sunstudi to /opt.
There have been created 3 folders: netbeans-5.5.1,SS12_README_FIRST and SUNWspro
$>pwd
/opt
$>ls
netbeans-5.5.1 sunstudi SUNWmlib SUNWvts SS12_README_FIRST SUNWits SUNWspro
I tried to launch the sunstudio by hitting :
$>/opt/SUNWspro/bin/sunstudio &
My machine answered with an error mesage :
[1] 5404
<$Validating NetBeans IDE at :"opt/SUNWspro/.../netbeans-5.5.1"
Sun Studio is unable to find a supported version of the NetBeans IDE at the specified location.
Sun Studio requires a NetBeans IDE version 5.5.1 with NetBeans C/C++ Development Pack version 5.5.1 installed.Sun Studio looks for a valid NetBeans IDE installation in the following order :
1) Location specified with --netbeanshome command line option
2) At /opt/netbeans-5.5.1 location, if exists (!)
3) At /opt/SUNWspro/.../netbeans-5.5.1 location, if exists
4) At /opt/SUNWspro/.../.../netbeans-5.5.1 location, if exists
Please run the System Preparation Tool (prepare_system), if available, to set up your environment
[1]+ Exit 1
So I tried everything to check, what just can be "guilty".
I found out, that the executable "netbeans" is suspiciously small (3824 byte).
So I thought, an error occurs everytime while decompressing sunstudi
and the unpacking of netbeans ends or breaks up without to create and place all its contains onto the disk.
Probably hardware error.
This was in my opinion the main bug for running netbeans and sunstudio.
I left the sunstudio on the disk and erased the netbeans 5.5.1.
ad2(netbeans)
I downloaded a platform independent version of Netbeans 6.5 and placed the zip file into
the disk to another place : /export (for some else important reasons) and unpacked it.
The netbeans started properly and I could build some java applications,
hoping to can add the C compilers from the SUNWSpro to the library of netbeans.
They have been found, almost automatically. The building of binaries ended with error messages.
But I got an object file (.o).
So I give the building of c++ apps by netbeans up
and I tried to compile the fresh generated codes typing
/opt/SUNWspro/bin/CC code.cpp -o out
It went well and I got later the built executable to run. It worked also well.
So I use now the NetBeans 6.5 from else source and I can write source codes.
Surprising way the netbeans found the compilers in the sunstudio folder.
But the ´launching of sunstudio by hitting :
/<sunstudiohome>/sunstudio & -- netbeanshome <netbeans 6.5 homedirectory>
was always aborted.
3(built by-myself binaries)
I don't need much to write in c (or c++). And right now I can't analyze,
why the maker made so bad propblems in the work at netbeans.
But the "direct" building of programs with one source file ended successfully.
4(solaris)
I can't get the PATH variable set.
The command line in the terminal takes everything but doesn't change anything.
The PATH variable doesn't change in anyway.
Something wrong occurs always.
I am sure, that the SOLARIS installation works instable or wrongly.
Many else of my SOLARIS troubles remain unsolved but it belongs maybe anywhere else.
Thank You very much for assistance.
Greetings, Alexander

  • Booting Solaris10 x86

I've just installed Solaris10 x86 in my PC.
I have two disks: No. 1 with WIN_XP and a lot of data.
No.2 with only Solaris10 just installed but I can't boot to it. When I reboot the PC it goes directly to WIN_XP. I suppose that it may be because when I installed Solaris, I deselected the 1st disk to avoid that the program installation would damage or erase anything on it. (Got a notice about needing to enter the BIOS because of it, but I don't know what to do there).
The installation went quite OK; not the slightest problem.
( I used a Personalized Installation, not the Predetermined one)
The question is: If I reinstall Solaris 10 on the same 2nd disk and I don't deselect the 1st disk, will the program leave alone my WIN_XP and all the data in this disk allowing me to make a choice when rebooting the PC?

    Sir,
I have installed both operating systems on one disk and have Solaris set as the primary operating system.
In this way Solaris rightfully recognises Windows as an existing operating system and shows it to you in its boot-menu. You can make your choice which operating system you want to boot from at boot-time.
I haven't tried it (yet) but I suspect that, when you configure your Solaris disk as the primary boot disk, Windows will be recognised as an optional disk to boot from

  • Solaris10/x86 date screwed up after rtc cronjob

    Hello,
I'm having problems with solaris10/x86 03/05 w/o patches since two days.
From sunday to monday night, at about 2am the clock jumped to 11pm of 31.12.1969. I suspect the rtc cronjob which is to be run at 2:01 am. This affected two of my three x86 sun servers. The same happened right now, (monday to tuesday night) and affected only one of the three servers. I want you to know, that we had switched to summertime from saturday to sunday night, so this happens since 1 day after switching to summer time (that worked fine on saturday night).
Setting the date doesn't work, it will always reset to 1.1.1970 automatically:
    server:~#date -u 010100302005 && sleep 5 && date
    Sat Jan 1 00:30:00 GMT 2005
    Thu Jan 1 00:00:04 CET 1970
    ntpdate doesn't work as well.
I use these steps to get it working:
    1) set date to something useful (gets automatically reset to 1.1.1970)
    2) reboot
    3) set date again to something useful
    4) try ntpdate (doesn't work at this step)
    5) reboot
    6) set date again to something useful
    7) ntpdate (works this time)
I'm very curious about this issue, where can I find out if can contact sun support regarding this problem?

Today it happened again on one of the three servers (v40z) :(
This is what I tried after I got it running again:
    # date
    Sat Jan 1 01:30:46 CET 2005
    # ./ntpdate clock.redhat.com
    29 Mar 02:29:30 ntpdate[334]: step time server 66.187.233.4 offset 39052701.743699 sec
    # date
    Wed Mar 29 02:29:31 CEST 2006
    # [ -x /usr/sbin/rtc ] && /usr/sbin/rtc -c
    # date
    Wed Dec 31 23:00:01 CET 1969
I also noticed on an x4100 server:
    # date
    Sun Jan 29 01:55:50 CET 2006
    # date -u 032902302006
    Wed Mar 29 02:30:00 GMT 2006
    # date
    Wed Dec 31 23:00:02 CET 1969
    /etc/rtc_config shows:
    zone_info=Europe/Malta
    zone_lag=-3600
I'm trying to get the reason for this, any hints how to chase the problem?

  • Solaris10 x86 lot of  "driver not attached"

I downloaded and installed Solaris10 on my x86 system. Installation process occured without any error. But my ethernet adapter does not work.
After prtconf there was a lot of devices without driver attached to it. In fact, there was attached driver only to display adapter, IDEcontroller, FDcontroller, USB UHCI controller(I use USB keyboard and mouse).
How can I attach driver to device and how/where can I found proper one? All my hardware I found in HCL, some of it only in part "reported to work"
I have no experience with Solaris.
    Any suggestions? Thank You!

    Hello,
Thanks for the very helpful suggestions. But I need to know why I see os error 49 as below.
    SQL> ORA-01034: ORACLE not available

The document provided shows us the error may be accompanied by one of the following. Error 49 is not mentioned.
       A) SVR4 error 12: not enough space
       B) SVR4 error 22: Invalid argument (you are trying to increase SGA and
                                           SHMMAX is large enough)
       C) SVR4 error 22: Invalid argument

What does potentially cause shmat() to be failed with os error 49, "Protocol driver not attached"?
    Please suggest.

    Hi,
    i'm trying to install Oracle10g R1 on solaris 10 ( 6/06 ) x86 ( 32 bit ) -- thus i can't load R2 on it. ( only x86-64 supported ). Moreover i'm trying to install in a dedicated zone with inherited /usr,/var, /opt etc. there aren't any resource pools created ( pooladm )
i've already figured that i had to update some ini file to support 5.10 OS version ( only 5.6-5.9 were listed )
the DB server is not running Xserver, but i've setup environiment to connect to remote Xserver -- my workstation -- this works -- xterm/xload/xlogo are all working. but when i launch runInstaller:

  • Help in compiling/linking a DEVICE DRIVER in SOLARIS10 x86

    hello!
    PROBLEM:
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
i need assistance in compiling/linking a video capture
    driver (bt848x) (http://bt848x.sourceforge.net/) for
    solaris 10 x86.
the driver uses the /usr/lib/libc.a (specifically the _xtoll.o)
which, if im not mistaken, is not available in solaris 10
anymore. so how am i going to compile it?
    BACKGROUND:
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
the original compile/link code in the makefile is:
    /usr/ccs/bin/ld -o bt848x -r bt848-cards.o bt848-driver.o
    bt848-kern.o i2c.o tuner.o sound-tda9875.o

    bt848-kern.o i2c.o tuner.o sound-tda9875.o
    sound-msp3400.o -L/usr/lib -lc

i mean, is it ok to build a driver with dynamic libraries?
or the device driver should always be statically linked?

Where can I do that? You can not find it because it is not available. And, apparently it will not become available.
According to information, you will need to wait until Oracle releases 11gR2 for Solaris x86. Unfortunately we have no date for that.

  • Mounting Solaris 8 formated disk to solaris10 X86

I had purchased a 1 TB SATA hard disk and used a special adaptor from Acard to plug it into my scsi bus on a Pinnacle Data System computer (Sun Clone) and succeeded in making 137 GB partitions (slices) and suceeded in using 959Gb which is probably all of the disk anyway. I then had to loan my adaptor to a friend. Unfortunately before I could get it back I had to fly to Germany from California for an emergency sw issue. I then went to Scotland and used a SATA to USB adaptor to plug the hard disk into my E250. I had no problem mounting all the partitions and filling them up. Now my problem (finally) is that I loaded a spare disk for my Lenova T60 with Solaris 10 X86. Why won't the system mount any of the partitions of the TB disk?
The system sees the device in the /dev/dsk directory but keeps telling me the device is already in use or the mount point is busy......I created the mount point. The system sees my 8GB corsair memory stick perfectly. I went into some other points and it seems the disk is an unknown format............what?
Anybody got any ideas, let me know,
    Thanks, Mike
ps: Sorry I was so long winded

    Hello Mike,
Solaris x86 and Solaris SPARC ufs aren't interchangeable due to big-endian and small-endian dependance.

ZFS filesystems are interchangable between x86/x64 and SPARC.

  • Zones on Solaris10 x86

I don't understand the licensing, support and platforms zones run on.
    1) Are zones supported on X86 Solaris?
    2) Are they available in OpenSolaris x86?
    3) I saw a demonstration of a really nice gui tool to configure and move zones, (Container Manager?), is that an additional product?
    Thank you,
    Hank

    1) Are zones supported on X86 Solaris?Yes
    2) Are they available in OpenSolaris x86?Yes
    3) I saw a demonstration of a really nice gui tool to
configure and move zones, (Container Manager?), is
that an additional product? You're probably thinking of Solaris Container Manager, which is an add-on product to Sun Management Center. Both of these are licensed seperately from Solaris. They do come with the Solaris 10 media kit (2 CDs with yellow labels) or can be downloaded at http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/sunmanagementcenter/.
    From the website:
Note: Sun Management Center software can be downloaded free of charge, however a license needs to be purchased in order to use.

  • /sbin/init not found after Solaris10-x86 first reboot

    Hello all,
I just installed Solaris 10 on a x86. Nothing seemed to go awry, AFAIK.
After the very first reboot it fails to boot with this:
    WARNING: exec(/sbin/init) file not found
    (Could not start init)
    Press any key to reboot.
    So I'm stuck, it seems.
It does not seem that the / slice is missing as I guess I'd have a totally different error message, something like "could not mount root fs", I dunno.
I'm sure that if I could boot the install DVD in single mode I'd be able to go and really check if /sbin/init really exists.
Except that... I'm used to Sparc with its OPB, dunno how to get x86's equivalent to OpenBoot.
Anyway, anyone came across the same "missing file" problem after initial install, and if so, how did you get out of it ?
Bonus question, is there an equivalent to OpenBoot on x86 and how to reach it ?
Before you ask.. this PC ran on Solaris 9/x86 a looooong time ago, no hardware changes, so no need to send me to the HCL :)
    Thanks,
    Jeff

WARNING: exec(/sbin/init) file not foundSorry, can't help you with this since I never encountered such an error.
Except that... I'm used to Sparc with its OPB, dunno
how to get x86's equivalent to OpenBoot. That would be the configuration manager. Its the question you get in the beginning where it asks you what image to boot ('press b or enter to boot normally'). If you press escape there you get into the section where you can determine the default boot device and add new hardware drivers when needed.

  • Ipnat/solaris10/x86 rdr problem

    Hi there,
I have a very simple setup I'm trying to create as follows:
solaris 10 box, connected to corporate LAN and private network.
    Corporate Lan interface: e1000g0
    Private network interface: elxl0
What I want is NAT for all the solaris (8) machines on my private network, and then port forwarding for specific ports on the solaris 10 box to take me to certain ports on the solaris 8 machines.
    My current configs are: if.conf
    pass in all
    pass out alland: ipnat.conf:
    rdr e1000g0 from any to 130.177.1.35/32 port = 8500 -> 10.31.14.20 port 22
    rdr e1000g0 from any to 130.177.1.35/32 port = 9500 -> 10.31.14.20 port 23
    map e1000g0 10.0.0.0/8 -> 130.177.1.35/32 proxy port ftp ftp/tcp
    map e1000g0 10.0.0.0/8 -> 130.177.1.35/32 portmap tcp/udp auto
map e1000g0 10.0.0.0/8 -> 130.177.1.35/32Nat works fine - I can log into the 10.31.14.20 box on the private network and connect out from there to my personal PC on the corporate LAN, or I can ping any of the corporate LAN machines with no problems from the solaris 8 boxes.
The rdr's just don't work though! If I try to ssh or telnet into the solaris 10 box on the appropriate ports (8500, or 9500), it just hangs for a while and then the connection times out.
We have the same setup with two other private networks, but using Free BSD as the gateway onto the LAN, and it works fine.
I must be missing something, but I have exhaused all help from google!
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

Well, that gave me some more info at least.
When I snoop on the ultimate destination (sol 8) box, when trying to connect through port 8500 on the port forwarding (sol 10) box, I only get a:
    130.177.3.95 -> csa00028 TCP D=22 S=3730 Syn Seq=3661943173 Len=0 Win=16384 Options=<mss 1460,nop,nop,sackOK>
But nothing goes out from there as a response.
If I try the same on our other environment (which is using bsd as the forwarding box) I get:
    130.177.3.95 -> csw00100 TCP D=22 S=3774 Syn Seq=767722056 Len=0 Win=16384 Options=<mss 1460,nop,nop,sackOK>
    csw00100 -> 130.177.3.95 TCP D=3774 S=22 Syn Ack=767722057 Seq=4091648136 Len=0 Win=24820 Options=<nop,nop,sackOK,mss 1460>
So I can see that in my new environment the sol8 server isn't responding. But I don't know why!
I can ping 130.177.3.95 from the sol 8 box so it should be able to talk to it okay.

  • Boot from second hard drive with ZFS in Solaris 10 x86

    Hi,
The usual menu.lst to boot Solaris10 x86 with a boot environment that contains a ZFS boot loader is this one
    title Solaris 10 5/08 s10x_nbu6wos_nightly X86
    findroot (pool_rpool,0,a)
    kernel$  /platform/i86pc/multiboot  -B $ZFS-BOOTFS
    module /platform/i86pc/boot_archive
    title Solaris failsafe
    findroot (pool_rpool,0,a)
    kernel /boot/multiboot kernel/unix -s    -B console=ttyb
module /boot/x86.miniroot-safeI understand that to add an alternate boot disk, I have to play with installgrub and then attach it in the pool.
But my question is : Is there a way to boot from my alternate hard disk by adding a new entry in menu.lst or is the only
way is to modify the BIOS parameter?
    Thanks for your help,
    Groucho_fr

    Groucho_fr wrote:
    Thanks for your answer Alan,
But ok, I imagineI can add a grub entry. But what I want to know is what is the exact way to boot from an alternate hard disk on Solaris 10u6
x86.AFAIK there are only two ways to do this. Select the disks via BIOS which becomes a royal PITA in a short amount of time or play with a boot manager such as GRUB until you get the syntax right.
Personally I put all OS's on the primary disks if possible to avoid these situations and if I have others to play with then you can easily mount them in or set them up as D: drive etc...
The only exception would be in an enterprise setting where you need to do things such as mirroring but then again in those situations it's only one OS per machine anyways so it's much easier.
So at the end, I am not sure what I have to configure and what is the procedure to boot from my alternate boot diskTry the grub homepage for the grub manual and hopefully for a mailing list or try a search engine.
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-5461/zfsboot-1?a=view
has an example to follow of using -B.
And moreover, the installgrub does not working for me :
    root@mac1 # zpool status
    pool: rpool
    state: ONLINE
scrub: resilver completed after 0h2m with 0 errors on Thu Mar 26 10:56:24 2009
    config:
    NAME          STATE     READ WRITE CKSUM
    rpool         ONLINE       0     0     0
    mirror      ONLINE       0     0     0
    c5t0d0s0  ONLINE       0     0     0
    c5t4d0s0  ONLINE       0     0     0
    errors: No known data errors
    root@mac1 # installgrub /boot/grub/stage1 /boot/grub/stage2 /dev/rdsk/c5t4d0s0
    cannot open/stat device /dev/rdsk/c5t4d0s2
You shouldn't need to do an installgrub if you installed Solaris. Try c5t4d0s0 not s2.
