Super.service() in servlets
in one of the servlet programs, code given as class extending HttpServlet, then doGet() given, then in doPost(), doGet() is called, then in service() method,
super.service(req, res) is given. if i remove super.service(req, res), it is giving error. why actually service need to be given or in that super.service(req, res) need to be called? what is the meaning of super.service()?
if i remove super.service(req, res), it is giving error.Whenever you ask about an error, you must include the exact error message.
Also, if you've got these kind of problems, then I humbly suggest that you step away from servlets altogether for the moment and work a bit more on the basics. That problem has nothing to do with Servlets and everything with object oriented programming and inheritance.

Web service and servlets in the same project...web.xml?
Hello, I have a problem with my web service.
I have a server, which displays a web service. I programmed this service with JAXRPC.
I have a client, in another directory. I succeded in compiling, deploying and running the web service.
The problem is that after I tried to integrate this service in an existing project. This project contains servlets. In these servlets, I'm using sessions.
These servlets are on the same side as the server of the web service. Because of the implementation of my code, I'd like to use in the class that represents the server of the service, the same session as the one I'm using in the servlets.
But of course, it's not working by itself. I know there's something to do with the web.xml files.
The thing is that I created a web.xml file for the service, and another for the servlets.
I was thinking of joining both of them in one xml file, but everything crashes then...
Could someone tell me how to create a project with a web service and servlets, and mostly how to configure the xml file??
Thanks for any help

kumarhi,
I just found that this exception is thrown from function
public UIViewRoot createView(FacesContext context, String viewId) {
UIViewRoot viewRoot = handler.createView(context, viewId);
context.getExternalContext().getRequestMap().put(CREATED_VIEW, viewId);
setupPageBean(context, viewRoot);
return viewRoot;
in viewHandlerImpl.java.
Has anyone got ideas about this???
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
cheers

Web services and servlets in same context
I would like to provide web services and servlets under the same context, where the servlets are handled by a controller mapped to multiple urls.
If I map the servlet controller with
<url-pattern>/servlet</url-pattern>
then /prjServ/servlet works in a browser but of course any other urls (eg /prjServ/servlet/fred) do not.
If I change the web.xml to be
<url-pattern>/servlet/*</url-pattern>
all attempts to access the servlet get requested resource not available.
The web service continues to work fine whichever mapping I use for the servlet (the web service is /prjServ/mlm).
Does the web service handling affect the way I can map the servlets?No, it should not. For the JAXRPC SI, the web services are implemented
via one common servler. -
503 Service Unavailable,Servlet error: Parsing error processing resource pa
1)I have developed an application using Struts framework(For the View and controller part ) and EJBs. When I run this application using the Embedded OC4J provided with JDeveloper,it runs fine.But when I try to deploy the same to the StandAlone OC4J(which I downloaded from OTN) or to the Application Server,I get the following error
--503 Service Unavailable,Servlet error: Parsing error processing resource path ---
2)The StandAlone OC4J version is 9.0.4.0.0 and I used JDK 1.4.
3)The same application runs fine when deployed to StandAlone OC4J when I developed it using only JSPs and EJB.
4)I even added the different libs for Struts inside WEB-XML folder under my Application Folder Structure.
5)The StandAlone OC4J Server runs fine and displays the First Page when it is started.
6)I even installed a totally new StandAlone OC4J and deployed all my previous applications to this new server.All the applications except where I used Struts Framework ran fine.
The Error Message is

SUP 2.0 Installation problem -SUP services dont start after installation
Hi,
I have installed a licensed version of "SUP 2.0 Personal developer 32 bit" on my machine from https://sybase.subscribenet.com. I installed 4 RAR files (sup0200_dev1_win to sup0200_dev4_win) of around 1.66 GB. I have unzipped all the sub-folders inside after unzipping the 4 main RAR files.
I followed the installation steps and installed all components on a single host.
Everything was fine while installing but I am facing these problems:
1. When I click Start > Programs > Sybase > Unwired Platform > Start Unwired Platform Services... nothing starts.
2. When I open Sybase Unwired WorkSpace I dont see any "Start Development" or any "WorkSpace Navigator" or anything specific to SUP Workspace. Only specific to Eclipse is what I see.
3. Most of the folders in the installed path is not there or are empty. For e.g. The folder Servers\MessagingServer\Data is empty.
For another information I see some error in the installation log like:
+(Nov 3, 2011 11:38:31 PM), , com.sybase.stf.install.uep.wizardaction.CopyInitConfigFiles, err, Could not copy directory D:\Sybase_Installables\sup0200_dev3_win\modules\mobileserver\syscheck to D:\Sybase\UnwiredPlatform\Util\syscheck ServiceException: (error code = -30000; message = "The system cannot find the path specified. (3)"; severity = 0)
The strange thing is during installation the setup does not throw any error and I go to Finish the setup. Also I am able to successfully uninstal.
Could anybody please guide me how what could be the problem. I suspect the installable is not appropriate.Hi
Do you see the services as being installed? What OS are you installing on?
I had to do a reinstall one time to get everything up and running, I also had the issue of the services not being properly installed (got a successful message after my first install but that in general seems to mean very little). I then carefully went through the prerequisites again and on second try things worked correctly.

How to provide web service in servlet container?
If I want my servlet container to provide web service (JAX-RPC), how should I implement it?
I'm using Tomcat/Resin as servlet container. Thanks in advance!It depends on what standard you are conforming to. Even though some specifications allow you to switch protocols, http is the dominating standard. WS-I, for example, requires the http protocol.

Question about the distribution of web service or servlet
Hello,
I don not know how to distribute a web servcie or servlet on the web server. I can only use this web service with the open state of the glassfish. If I close the glassfish server, the servlet cannot be accessed.
I just want the web service or the servlet to be disributed on the web server. Web service and the servlet are available when the web server is on.
anybody can help me?
thank you in advance.

Java app with web service and servlets
Hi. I intend to make a java application which exposes some methods as a web service and as jsp/servlets. It's core functionality is not really web centric, but its more a java app with a web tier. I am not sure about how the architecture of such a system would look like using the java platform. I currently see three options:
1. Run everything in a servlet container like tomcat. I hesitate to do this because i would be putting a lot of functionality which isn't about the web into a servlet container. Also, I have a lot of application scope data that is maintained and shared by all servlets/web services. However, it would be really easy just to put everything into tomcat and use ServletContext to maintain some global objects.
2. Use a Java EE to seperate application/business logic and data access into session beans and entity beans. I hesitate to this because it seem a bit overkill because the system isn't very big or complex right now. It also means that I would have to learn to use EJB's instead of just using some POJOs.
3. Run the web tier in a servlet container and the main app in a separate JVM, and then connect the tier by sending serialized objects over TCP sockets. I don't like writing network code but at least there is some separation of the tiers.
What would you do? Maybe I have overlooked a much better solution to the problem?
Let me just say that the system is the product of a student project spanning one semester, so it's important to choose the RIGHT solution (architectural-wise) instead of the something quick and dirty that is hard to defend.jschell wrote:

1. A "Right" solution is generally only proven by time.
2. It requires a great deal of knowledge about the business domain.Yeah, you are right. Let be try to rephrase it. What solution (pattern) would be considered the most common or appropriate when you have a Java App and want to expose a few methods as a website and web service?
I hesitate to do this because i would be putting a lot of functionality which isn't about the web into a servlet container. Also, I have a lot of application scope data that is maintained and shared by all servlets/web servicesHuh? Do you already have an exposed web service? If you already have a server which other clients communicate then where does this functionality that you don't want to be tomcat running now? Or where do you think that you want to run it? And if you are or do run it somewhere else then tomcat could access it the same way any other client accesses that server.Sorry, that sentence was written badly. I don't have anything right now. What I meant to write was that I will have a lot of application scope data, objects that are kept in memory as long as the server is running, shared by multiple servlet instances. -
Web services Vs Servlet Models
Hi everyone,
My requirement is to upload the thousands of files to the server from the client machine.
Since I am facing problems while opening the socket in the laptop, I have figured out the option as web services.
I do not have idea about the web services.
What will be the best option for uploading the file using servlet model or deploying the web services specially when you have bulk data to post on server?
Kindly help me out.

I do not have idea about the web services.You could always use Google or get a book?

Help... Super Urgent. Servlet Problem
Anyone can help me this? My servlet wants to connect to another servlet. My supervisor tells me to use socket. This is my code.
Socket socket = new Socket(location, 8210);
OutputStream os = socket.getOutputStream();
boolean autoflush = true;
PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter(socket.getOutputStream(), autoflush);
ObjectInputStream objIn = null;
Object obj = null;
BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(socket.getInputStream()));
out.println("GET "+dir+"?class="+className+"&method="+method+"&machine="+request.getServerName()+"&port="+random+" HTTP/1.1");
out.println("Host: localhost:8080");
out.println("Connection: Close");
out.println();
boolean loop = true;
StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer(8096);
while (objIn==null)
objIn = new ObjectInputStream(new BufferedInputStream(socket.getInputStream()));
try
obj = objIn.readObject();
//Thread.currentThread().sleep(50);
catch (Exception e)
e.printStackTrace();
My supervisor say that as my servlet opens socket connection to the other servlet, the other servlet just have to do outputstream then my servlet can received. I try but can't. Anyone can help me?? Very Urgent. tomorrow is the dateline.Hi MelonSeed,
I believe that the other servlet needs to open a ServerSocket in order for the two servlets to communicate via a Socket.
Although I haven't tried it, you can open a URLConnection to the other servlet and then open an InputStream for reading the response from the other servlet.
Depending on the URL you use to connect to the other servlet, you will (as I'm sure you know) invoke its "doGet()" or "doPost()" methods.
Also, you may find some relevant examples in Jason Hunter's book, Java Servlet Programming, which are available online.
Good Luck,
Avi. -
How to access Remote File using File Services or Servlet
Hi Friends,
I want to access a file from a remote location. How to do that ?
I tried to display an image in my client application. The image source is from remote location. I tried with URL, is there any other way to read/write remote resources through secured connection with some encryption and decryption techniques.
Kindly help me out !!!

Hellow experts,
SUP 2.0 Why the sybase Messageing Service doesn't start?
When I start the service, it starts and ends indicating "if they are not in use by other services or programs; it will end automatically"
What should I do for this?
Thanks

That happens to me very often! -
Hi,
I don't know if this is an appropriate question to ask for this class as it's not
workshop
specific. I was wondering how will I decide when it is appropriate to use a web
service as opposed to say servlet or an EJB for my application? What is a good
rationale to use?
Thanks,
SadhanaHi Adam,
Thanks a lot for giving such a lucid explanation of my vague question!
I understand now the difference between when to use EJBs/Servlets/Web Services.
Thanks again!

Hi Sadhana,
Web service versus Servlet versus EJB. Which one to use? That is a very
good question.
EJBs should be the core desription and processing of your business rules.
They generally
have good performance, are easy to integrate into your security set up but
they require
access using the RMI-IIOP protocol. This means that generally EJBs are not
accessible
outside of your firewall and their clients have to be written in Java (other
enterprise
objects or applets or GUI applications).
Servlets often form a web-based front end to EJBs. They also have good performance,
integrate into security and only require HTTP access. This means they are
accessible
outside your firewall and any client with a HTTP or web API can call on
them, however,
there is no standard contract or rules for this type of interaction so you
will need
provide direct input into development of the client.
Web services are also accessible via HTTP and so can be accessed from outside
your
firewall. In fact, Web services internally within Workshop and WebLogic
actually
operate by using servlets and EJBs but the main advantage is that the mechanism/contract
for interacting with the web service is a well defined standard (WSDL) and
can actually
be registered or retreived dynamically (UDDI). Since web service standards
are open,
most popular programming languages already provide client APIs to interact
with them
thus freeing the web service developer from direct interaction with the
client developer
and letting the client be developed on any platform. The penalty for this
openness
is a small performance hit (XML translation) and a slowly maturing security
model.
So in summary, use EJBs for business operations that have Java clients within
your
enterprise, use servlets to provide web style access to your business operations
(like web pages) and use web services to enable automated clients that can
be written
on any platform either inside or outside your enterprise (firewall). In
fact, it
is common to write the EJB first and then to expose some parts of it outside
of your
enterprise by writing a web service wrapper (maybe using the EJB controls
that we
saw in class).
I hope this helps.
